Why are the system preferences set to disallow downloading Internet content/applications?

I just purchased a refurbished iMac from the Apple Store.  I am attempting to install Apache OpenOffice for Mac, but a message appears that says, "open office cannot be opened because it is from an undentified developer.   Your security preferences allow installation of only apps from the Mac App Store and identified developers."  How and/or where do I change this setting?

I very strongly advise against disabling Gatekeeper. Doing so increases the risk that your computer will be infected with malware.
Leave the Gatekeeper setting on Mac App Store and identified developers.
If you need to install other software, see the heading "How to open an app from a unidentified developer" on this support page. The instructions apply to installer packages as well as applications.

    Good advice from Linc Davis that should sort out your query i think...
    However you dont want to set your MBP to never go to sleep...
    Adjust reasonable sleep settings...
    And the download an APP called caffiene...
    When you click it you can have your MBP never go to sleep with a single click of your menu bar... and with another click it can go to sleep normally to maintain the laptop...
    Simply click the cup... To toggle never sleep/sleep

  • What are the System Requirements for Web Server hosting Adobe Air application

    Working on a project that is using Adobe Air . The Adobe support site has system requirements for the client side application, but for the server side, what are the system requirements?
    Using a Windows server, would expect to have approx. 100 concurrent connections at any given time.

    Adobe AIR applications are installed on the end user's computer. They are not hosted on a web server. You can deploy an AIR file, which is the installer file for an AIR application, via your web server.

  • Where are the system preferences for internet access?

    I had to re-install 10.6.2 with a disk formatting... all went well and I manage to go online .
    But I notice that my old system preferences are not back in place... I don't have all the connection settings I used to have and in which I had a manual IP address for a school ethernet network connection.
    Where can I find them?
    Can I just drag them back into my computer?
    Thanks for your help.

    If you have a backup of your entire previous system, you could try looking at /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.network.identification.plist . I'm not 100% sure that's where the information would be stored, but it looks promising. If you think you would recognize the IP address when you see it, open that file from your backup with a text editor and scan through for the IP address. Then enter it in your network settings.
    If you don't think you'd know what you were looking at, you could try moving that file from the backup to the new system, but I'd take some precautions. Move the newer copy of that file to the desktop temporarily, then restart and see how things work. If anything goes wonky, put it back, replacing the older file. If after a few days all is well, trash it.

    Nope. You can always reverse that if you choose.

    I can't find the icloud icon on the system preferences menu. There is only a Mobile me icon.  I can't set up my icloud.

    my mac os is 10.6.8 and when I try to upgrade, says I have most up to date software.
    You do. 10.6.8 is the latest update to 10.6.
    10.7 Lion or 10.8 Mountain Lion are paid upgrades. Buy 10.8 in the Mac App Store if your Mac is compatible by searching for "Mountain Lion." If not, call Apple to order 10.7 Lion after making sure your Mac meets the requirements.

  • I can't set up icloud on my older macbook. The systems preferences has only "mobile me". I have lots of files on this computer that I want to transfer.

    How do you set up icloud on an older macbook? It is full of files that I want to keep. The system preferences menu does not have icloud. It has mobile me. Do I have to upgrade the operating system to, say, mountain lion? Does anyone know how to solve this problem? I want to give the old one to my granddaughter.

    You have to update to Lion at least to get basic iCloud functions, and if you want full iCloud functions, then you need to upgrade to Mountain Lion.

  • Why does most of the "system preferences" not load due to having an intel based mac?

    I used to be able to access ALL of the items in "system preferences". Since the upgrade to Mavericks, which the Apple Store did for me, I cannot use most of them. It won't load my printer information. I cannot access security and privacy, users and accouts, parental controls, etc. Sometimes a window pops up and says "Preference Error" could not load.....pane. Or it will say "Preference Error" (and something like) cannot load ....... because it's an intel based mac.  What the heck does that mean and why does it say that when I used to be able to access everything in the "System Preferences"? Please help! I'm sooooo frustrated and confused right now.

  • Help Problem NOT Solved Why have my system preferences suddenly started to reset back to default every time I reboot

    Why have my system preferences suddenly started to reset back to default every time I reboot At first I thought it was happening because I disconnected my Google account, but now I've disable that account and switched to Firefox.  I wasn't sure how my browser setting could have anything to do with my system preferences and now I think it's some glitch or missed setting that is causing the problem.  Oh & I locked my preference panel and that did not help.
    In addition to what I say above, not only are all my system preferences being reset to default, but also the preferences for word and Excel.  I'm sure it's affecting other programs, but Word & Excel are the main ones that I have a lot of custom setting for.  Especially annoying is the fact that my ribbon commands are reset.  All this started happening when I signed up for a Google Drive account.  The only system updates have been the usual security updates.  I deleted my Google account but haven't uninstalled it.  I'll try this, but I can't figure out how that would result in all OS preferences being reset.

  • In Lion 10.7.x I cannot disable the Lock documents for 2 weeks in Time Machine! Thus it prevents to change anything else like the system preferences or other settings. How I can disable it?

    Hello, In Lion 10.7.x I cannot disable the Lock documents for 2 weeks in Time Machine! Thus it prevents to change anything else like the system preferences or other settings. All is locked. How I can disable it?

    Do you mean the check box isn't enabled?
    Or you remove the check but it doesn't "stick"?
    Or you remove the box but documents are stil getting locked?
    That setting doesn't apply to other things in System Preferences, just apps that support AutoSave and Versions.  If you're having a problem with System Prefs, please clarify exactly what.

  • Why are the threads start and terminate randomly?

    Hi there,
    I got the program below. I am wondering why are the threads start and terminate randomly? Everytime, I run the program, it produces different results.
    I know that these four threads have got same normal priority (should be 5), and under windows there is something called timeslice. Then these four threads rotate using this timeslice. How do we know what exactly the timeslice is in seconds? If the timeslice is fix, then why the results are ramdom?
    Thanks in advance!

    t.start();

    try {
    System.out.println("Thread: " + tName);
    Thread.sleep(2000);
    } catch (InterruptedException e) {

    System.out.println("Terminating thread: " + tName);
    public static void main(String args[]) {
    // Why are the threads start and terminate randomly?
    new MyThreadOne("1");
    new MyThreadOne("2");
    new MyThreadOne("3");
    new MyThreadOne("4");
    try {
    Thread.sleep(10000);
    // Thread.sleep(2000);
    } catch (InterruptedException e) {
    System.out.println(
    "Exception: Thread main interrupted.");
    System.out.println(
    "Terminating thread: main thread.");
    1. Firstly, I set in the main function:
    Thread.sleep(10000);
    and I run the program it gives:
    Thread: 1
    Thread: 4
    Thread: 2
    Thread: 3
    Terminating thread: 1
    Terminating thread: 3
    Terminating thread: 4
    Terminating thread: 2
    Terminating thread: main thread.
    BUILD SUCCESSFUL (total time: 10 seconds)
    Run it again, it gives:
    Thread: 2
    Thread: 4
    Thread: 3
    Thread: 1
    Terminating thread: 2
    Terminating thread: 1
    Terminating thread: 3
    Terminating thread: 4
    Terminating thread: main thread.
    BUILD SUCCESSFUL (total time: 10 seconds)
    And my question was why it outputs like this? It suppose to be:
    Thread: 1
    Thread: 2
    Thread: 3
    Thread: 4
    Terminating thread: 1
    Terminating thread: 2
    Terminating thread: 3
    Terminating thread: 4
    Terminating thread: main thread.
    BUILD SUCCESSFUL (total time: 10 seconds)
    Why these four threads start and finish randomly each time I run the program? I use Windows, suppose there is a timeslice (i.e. 1 second), these threads have the same priority. Then the threads should start and finish in turn one by one. Am I right?
    2. My second question is:
    When I change the codes in the 'main' function into:
    Thread.sleep(10000); -> Thread.sleep(2000);
    it gives me the results like:
    Thread: 1
    Thread: 4
    Thread: 3
    Thread: 2
    Terminating thread: main thread.
    Terminating thread: 1
    Terminating thread: 4
    Terminating thread: 3
    Terminating thread: 2
    BUILD SUCCESSFUL (total time: 2 seconds)
    Run it again:
    Thread: 1
    Thread: 2
    Thread: 3
    Thread: 4
    Terminating thread: 3
    Terminating thread: main thread.
    Terminating thread: 4
    Terminating thread: 2
    Terminating thread: 1
    BUILD SUCCESSFUL (total time: 2 seconds)
    I tried several times. The main thread always terminates before or after the first child thread finished.
    My question is why it doesn't output something like:
    Thread: 1
    Thread: 2
    Thread: 3
    Thread: 4
    Terminating thread: 3
    Terminating thread: 4
    Terminating thread: 2
    Terminating thread: main thread.
    Terminating thread: 1
    BUILD SUCCESSFUL (total time: 2 seconds)
    or
    Thread: 1
    Thread: 2
    Thread: 3
    Thread: 4
    Terminating thread: 3
    Terminating thread: 4
    Terminating thread: 2
    Terminating thread: 1
    Terminating thread: main thread.
    BUILD SUCCESSFUL (total time: 2 seconds)

    Yes, my machine has multi-core. Then you mean that if I got a one core machine the result should always be:

    Terminating thread: 1
    Terminating thread: 2
    Terminating thread: 3

    ???No.

    How to explain my second quesiton then? Why the main thread always terminates before some of the child threads end? Thanks a lot.

  • Account in the System Preference Crash

    Every time I try to go into Account in the system preferences, it crashes. Any thoughts? All the other panes load fine.
    I've just delete com.apple.finder.plist in my preference and repaired permission.
    I'm running 10.6.1

    The preference file that seemed to get updated when I went into that the Accounts pane of System Preferences is this one
    <user home folder>/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    so I would move that file to your Desktop (with System Preferences NOT open), then try to go into the Accounts pane again.
    Note: Using the new ability to +look inside+ a preference file, there is a setting in that one called com.apple.preferences.accounts.outline.usersparent
    There are other settings, so if you lose something you want to get back, put the preference file back.

  • I have lost the system preferences application. How do i restore it?

    Hi,
    I have lost the system preferences application. How do I restore it?

    If you have had Time Machine running on your computer, you may be able to get it back from a backup.
    However, since System Preferences contains more than just the application (it also contains modules that are kept in [$HOME]/Library/PreferencePanes on your startup disk), then you may need to restore them too if they do not exist on your system either.
    Granted, having a missing System Preferences could be disasterous... at the least, you can't set your preferences, but at the most, system services (whether Apple or 3rd party) could be broken.  Because of this, the above advice is not guaranteed.
    The only sure-fire way of getting your System Preferences back is to re-install your system.
    Important note: TheDave413's note about the Dock is also a very useful tip, since the Dock keeps an alias of the System Preferences app rather than a copy of it.  If that is all that's missing, you can easily re-create it yourself without any of the above drastic action!
