Why are there so many inactive processes running on my computer?, etc.

Hi,
This issue might already be addressed but my MacBook Pro has been really slow lately and when I checked the activity monitor, the inactive processes take up half of the system memory. Usually, how much space is this supposed to take? I only have the basics plus Sophos running. I've been trying to check to see what's running but sometimes some disappear and appear momentarily. In general, what's the idea or normal composition of system memory? Any help would be much appreciated.
Usually, this affects Safari which is slow when I switch between tabs, etc. Now, the browser has been quitting more frequently with the Java 10.4-.5 message appearing. What should I do to remedy that problem?
Many thanks for any input!

It is normal for there to be quite a number of inactive processes.
the inactive processes take up half of the system memory
There is some confusion in what you are asking. Are you talking about inactive memory? Inactive processes will not be using any CPU, but they may have inactive memory allotted to them. This is memory that, should another process require it, can be reallocated to that other process. It's like a kind of caching: it can quickly be drawn upon should the inactive process become active again and need it. In the meantime, it is free for any process to use. It is not being wasted or used.
Usually, how much space is this supposed to take?
You are introducing the word "space" here. I'm not sure what you mean by that, but I don't think it's applicable.
I've been trying to check to see what's running but sometimes some disappear and appear momentarily.
That is normal for Activity Monitor. I think you need to have a better understanding of Activity Monitor.

Sophos may be slowing down your computer. You should turn off its always-on scanning feature (or whatever it's called) and just run it on demand.

• Why are there two ns-httpd processes running for one instance of iws 6

Hi all,
I'm used to iWS 4.x where there's only one watchdog and one ns-httpd process running for any given install of iWS. Now in iWS 6.x I noticed there are two processes for the admin server and two processes for the actual single web server instance, along with two watchdogs.
What are the extra web server instances doing? I noticed that there is a 'parent' relationship with the pid's, so I guess one is spawning the other, but why? If it's to have persistent state over restart, isn't that what uxwdog is for?
Thanks in advance,

• Why are there 26 firefox.exe processes running when the taskbar shows none?

Win 7 professional, Firefox 25.0.1. If I shut down Firefox and restart it I often get an error that a copy is already running. Checking the Task Manager shows many firefox.exe processes (26 this morning) even though the application tab shows none.

Hello Axis,
Can you please confirm if this happens each time you are using Firefox? Also, the cache size wouldn't have a big bearing on this issue happening. Can you please try if this issue happens when you are running Firefox in safe-mode (instructions below). if it doesn't then we can narrow the issue to a plugin / addon.
<hr>
Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)
* On Windows you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
* On Mac you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the option key while starting Firefox.
* On Linux you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by quitting Firefox and then going to your Terminal and running: firefox -safe-mode (you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
* Or open the Help menu and click on the Restart with Add-ons Disabled... menu item while Firefox is running.

Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the Troubleshooting extensions and themes article for that.
To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.
When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.

Thank you.

• Why are there so many more choices on the USA iTunes Store? Surely having an iTunes account should let you access all itunes availability the world over? Also how do you request films/tv series to the UK itunes?

Why are there so many more choices on the USA iTunes Store? Surely having an iTunes account should let you access all itunes availability the world over?
Also how do you request films/tv series to the UK itunes? There's tv series I'd like but they're incomplete like The Batman &amp; Xena Warrior Princess. And films theta aren't available for download but you can purchase in a store like HMV?  Apple isn't doing itself any favours by secluding countries by their store. They'd make billions if you could just select the iTunes Store you want to search &amp; purchase from just by signing in! If anything what they're doing is putting themselves into a corner, other companies like Samsung &amp; HTC are already on too of them for innovation &amp; ease of use. The people they're attracting are predominantly existing Apple users not new customers. What do you guys think?

It's not Apple's choice, they can only sell a particular item where the content provider/rights-holder has granted them a license to sell them. Content is licensed by the rights-holders to Apple on a country-by-country basis, each country therefore has to have its own store, and you have to be in a country to use its store - they want control over where their content is available.
You can try requesting that an item be added to the UK store via this page, but unless the rights-holder agrees to then Apple won't be able to sell it here : http://www.apple.com/feedback/itunes.html

• Why are there so many flash updates?

Why are there so many Flash updates… I have had two in the last week and at least one more since the start of the year. It seems to have really got silly this last 12 months, is Flash really that unsecure and unstable that it needs this many fixes and updates?
I know you can tick the install in background box when updating but I like to know what is going onto my computer and given Adobe's knack of crashing my system when using PS and AI I don't really want them silently installing anything.

99% of the time the update gets prompted by Youtube or BBC when videos won't play on there sites and I follow the links through them. You would like to think that big sites like these would not allow false links to malware to crop up, but it isn't out of the question. Next stop, up to date anti virus…..
As far as Youtube goes I thought they had adopted HTML 5 now as standard and didn't rely on Flash?

• Why are there so many apps and wearable tech out there that specifically focuses on losing weight?

I'm under weight and would really like to see some apps for people like me who want to gain about 30 lbs!

Why are there so many apps and wearable tech out there that specifically focuses on losing weight?
Because there's a 35x bigger market for it.
Percent of adults   age 20 years and over who are overweight, including  obesity: 69.2% (2009-2010) - http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/fastats/overwt.htm
...an estimated 1.7% of U.S. adults aged 20 and over are underweight - http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/hestat/underweight_adult_07_10/underweight_adult_07 _10.htm
I suggest you type
weight gain app osx
into a search engine.  I did and one came up on the top line (no idea if it is any good, you have to determine that yourself).

• Off-topic: why are there so many irrelevant posts here?

Why on earth are people posing questions that have absolutely no bearing on ARD? I'm trying to solve a problem with ARD and it's unbelievably frustrating to have to wade through an absolute morass of totally unrelated posts to try and find the info I need.
More to the point, why are the forum admins/mods not moving posts to the appropriate forum, where the question can be better answered?

People do not read the title of the forum or do not understand there are many forums. I have the ability to report posts and recommend relocation. I do that as time permits, but I am not, as a volunteer, treating this as a job.
The hosts/administrators do not have time to review every post for placement (staffing would not support that, I am sure).

• Menu dropdowns dissappear. I loved FFV3 why are there so many changes to Firefox and no update works properly? Can you stick to a version and improve on that one? It seems everything is getting screwed up.

I think I covered it. I want a stable browser. I work on computers for a living and Firefox has been the proven browser for a very long time and FFV3 was the best browser on the planet. Why fix something that isn't broken. I don't know what other browser will fulfill my needs like firefox did. Why are you guys screwing around with the best browser on the planet? Get it together guys.

You could take a look at this iTunes Version History on Wikipedia if you want a feel for what goes on in each update and how frequent they are. The last few major updates have been two years apart. Most of the point updates have little impact on the way the user interacts with the software. You don't have to upgrade with each update unless you have bought or upgraded a device that now requires a newer minimum version to work with. E.g. iOS 8 requires iTunes 11.4 or later.
There are some major layout changes in iTunes 12, but by and large any task that you could do in 11 can be done in 12. For example the new Get Info dialog lacks right-click context menus (at least for now) but it still accepts most standard keyboard shortcuts and drag & drop actions. If you're used to doing everything via a context menu it is going to be confusing to start with. A workaround is to hold down shift as you right-click > get info on a track selection to get the old style dialog.
Regarding the inability to delete playlists from the device I suspect you were working in the wrong context, i.e. looking at the playlists on the device in say the Music > Playlists sidebar for a device that is synced to the library. You should select the device first from the row of source icons, then Settings > Music from the sidebar, then deselect the playlist in question from the list of playlists scheduled to sync to the device, and sync.

• Why are there so many problems with the early 2008 Mac Pro ???

Hi everybody out there using Mac Pro's early 2008,
I found out there is a lot of problems with the early 2008 Mac Pro.
My early 2008 Mac Pro has been repaired ones under warranty and now it stopped working again ! Also see under: Mac Pro early 2008 no chime and does not start up. Why is this ????
It worked well for about 2 years and then it just fails and i had this failing issue twice already !!! Is this just a BAD Apple product or how do you think I need to approach this. Let’s face it, these machine don’t come cheap and you at least expect them to work without problems for 4-5 years. What is happening here ???
Cheers, Kavango

go to a black screen after 15 minutes or a couple hours
That is probably an indication that you need to find a new graphics card.
RE: Mac Pro Replacement Graphics cards
1) Apple brand cards,
2) "sold in the Apple store" cards, and
3) "Mac Edition" cards ...
... show all the screens, including Boot up screens, Safe Mode, Installer, Recovery, debug screens, and Alt/Option boot screens. At this writing, these choices include:
1) Apple brand cards:
• Apple-firmware 5770, about US$250** works near full speed in every model Mac Pro, Drivers in 10.6.5
• Apple-firmware 5870, about US$450
2) "sold in the Apple store" cards
• NVIDIA Quadro 4000, about US$1200
• NVIDIA Quadro 5000, about US$2500
3) "Mac Edition" cards -- REQUIRE 10.8.3 or later:
• SAPPHIRE HD 7950 3GB GDDR5 MAC Edition, about US$480** Vendor recommends Mac Pro 4,1
• EVGA GTX 680 Mac Edition, about US$600
The cards above require no more than the provided two 6-pin aux power connectors provided in the Mac Pro through 2012 model. Aux cables may not be provided for third-party cards, but are readily available.
If you are Meet ALL of these:
• running 10.8.3 or later AND
• don't care about "no boot screens" etc AND
• can re-wire or otherwise "work out" the power cabling, THEN:
You can use many more cards, even most "PC-only cards"

• So why are there so many LESS options in the New iMovie??

So I just started doing a new project in iMovie 2008, and let me tell you, I am really ****** off on the time I have so far wasted trying to edit my project here rather in iMovie 6.x or Final Cut Express. I am extremely disappointed at the lack of editing features in this version of iMovie. It is also way less intuitive than previous versions of iMovie. And to top if all off, I cannot even transfer any of my work to another program, so I guess I will have to start over.
PLEASE GO BACK TO PREVIOUS VERSIONS FUNCTIONALITY!
-Continually Disappointed Mac User...

And to top if all off, I cannot even transfer any of my work to another program, so I guess I will have to start over.
iMovie '08 is a totally different application. There is nothing to transfer but a list of instructions which the older versions cannot understand or use. No physical content exists as such until you share/export your project. And so far, no one has come up with a way of "threading" third-party "instructions" into the application detailing how third-party effects might be generated as part of the sharing/exporting process.
PLEASE GO BACK TO PREVIOUS VERSIONS FUNCTIONALITY!
This is a user to user forum. If you wish to make your feelings knot to Apple and "the powers that be" who might be able to make changes, select the "Feedback" option from within the application or go directly the to application feedback area on the Apple site.

• Why are there so many other programs downloaded with the Adobe programs?

I have an older computer with only 10 GB harddrive. I keep getting programs that I don't want and can't use. When it asks if I want this or that program, I always check no. But many times there is no asking, it just downloads these programs that are taking up what little free space I have which is only 5%.

Business 101: Sell advertising via "sponsored downloads" = make more money.
There are direct downloads that don't have the unwanted "bundled" software.
Flash Player for ActiveX (Internet Explorer)
Flash Player Plug-in (All other browsers)

• Why are there so many updates for Adobe Flash & Reader?

It seems like I am having to update at least once a week. This is very tedious. Also, $39 to chat with someone about my issue???

There aren't that many. For instance Adobe Reader XI had updates in January, February and May, only three this year.
What there are is a great many SCAMS from people who say they want you to update, and instead fill your computer with goodness knows what.
If you aren't sure whether you have been taken in by one of these, a good thing to do is to post a screen shot of the message telling you to update (don't try to reply with a screen shot in an email, it won't work).

• Why are there dozens of "web process" pop ups after wipe and load of 10.6.8 on Mac Mini by Genius Bar?

I just had my Mac Mini (early 2009) in at the Genius Bar as it was running very slow.  They did a multi hour scan of the harddrive, etc.  Did not find any hardware problems.  They did a wipe and loaded 10.6.8 on the Mini.  The Apple folks were great to work with.  I picked it up today and and set it all up.  Using Safari, I am now going through 6-12 "Web Process" with each and every web page I go to!!  Safari is completely unusable in this fashion.  Can this be changed or must I use a different web browser.

Good morning,
Not quite sure what you mean by 6/12 'web process' with every page I go to.  The version 5.1.7 is correct for the Snow Leopard OS X.
Run a software update, just in case the geniuses didn't, and check if you or they have installed any Safari extentions.   If so delete / disable them all and try again.
If Safari then shows signs of normality, reinstall the extentions one at a time until you find the one that is causing the problem.
Oh, and have you got 'Block pop up windows' checked in Safari menu?

• Why are there so many firewall entries?

I know the firewall is doing its job by blocking these IP addresses. But how do they even get my I.P?
I have searched a few of these I.Ps and all of them have been reported for hacking.
Also, on my laptop. I have Avast! Free and Windows Firewall enabled. The BT Home Hub 5 firewall is also enabled. If I disable Windows Firewall, is the home hub firewall suffient enough?
Here are some samples
20:29:09, 16 Aug.
BLOCKED 1 more packets (because of Remote administration)
00:41:24, 17 Aug.
IN: BLOCK [16] Remote administration (TCP 60.190.71.52:41475->86.151.145.37:22 on ppp3)
These entries are actually scary to see!

The Homehub firewall is doing its job. I would leave the Windows Firewall running. I would only stop it if you have another software firewall installed on your computer.
The router one stops attacks to your network from the Internet while the Windows one or a replacement on your computer, prevents anything on your computer accessing the Internet without permission as well as blocking attacks from the Internet.

• Why are there so many problems with 7.01 and 7.02?

Loading 7.01 and then 7.02 on both the iphone 4s and the iPad2 resulted in a complete factory restore of both the phone and the iPad.  I then had to completely restore from a backup.  Friends are reporting the same issue.  What is happening APPLE?  Is this the begining a major quality control issue?  Is this what to expect with future updates?

Try running Firefox in Safe Mode. If it functions properly in that configuration, then one of your add-ons is the culprit.
