Why are ThinkPads so expensive in some countries, at least mine?

Hi,
First of all, I would like to apologize for starting this discussion in an irrelevant thread.
I live in Indonesia. ThinkPads in my country are expensive, in my opinion. ThinkPad Twist in my country costs more than USD 1200 while in the US only costs around $800 for the same spec. ThinkPad T series (excluding the ones with with the 'i' and 'u' suffix), costs no less than $1500 while in other countries they are cheaper than that. The T430u costs more than $1200.  Do you know what might be the cause?

The US will always have the cheapest prices (well maybe China will get cheap too!), because they are the target market, and home market of Apple.
Also take into account shipping, market size, and exchange rate.
I live in New Zealand, and we also have the iPhone 4s for $1000, but that's NZ$1000.
Translated into US dollars we pay US$832
But contract free in the US it costs US$649
That is not nice, but can be expected as we only have 4million people and live in the middle of the ocean.
And the iPhone is a want, not a nessesity, so if you can't afford it then really you shouldn't get it.

  • Why are iPads so expensive on Ebay?

I am interested in buying one of these devices, but I just don't have the money to buy a new one at this moment. I don't understand why it is impossible to find one for under $500, yet that is what the 16 GB Wi-Fi version costs from Apple. I understand tax adds about $20, but it still should be quite a bit less for a used model.
I want one of these, but it's not easy to swing at $500.

Why are iPads so expensive on Ebay?
Supply and demand, plus it's the only way some international people can buy one at the moment.

  • HT1386 why are there 0's in some folders that i put photos in in iPhoto when I veiw it in iTunes?

why are there 0's in some folders that i put photos in in iPhoto when I veiw it in iTunes?

Those files should be being created in folders of the form:
    <User's Music>\iTunes\Album Artwork\Cache|Download\<GUID>\<##>\<##>\<##>
The <GUID> in your case is 0CDB362F24AD473A...
If they are appearing anywhere else I would suspect a permissions problem. iTunes just spits them out where it can. Similar problems can sometimes cause it to drop files on the desktop.
    Repair Permissions
Right-click on your main iTunes folder and click Properties, then go to the Security tab and click Advanced. If necessary grant your account and system full control to this folder, subfolders and files, then tick the option to replace permissions on child objects which will repair permissions throughout the library. This is the XP dialog but Windows 7 shouldn't be too different.
Once you've repaired the permissions search for all files of the form *.itc2 in the music folder and delete them, then start iTunes. iTunes will rebuild the artwork cache in the correct location as you scroll through your library.

  • Why are desktop icon positions for some files forgotten on restart

On restart/reboot some of the file icon positions are forgotten and the files reappear stacked over the startup drive icon.  The remainder of the files on the desktop are in their correct/previous positions.  Why are somefile locations not remembered?

Sounds like the .DS_Store invisible file is corrupt.  That is my wild guess.  There is a .DS_Store invisible file for each folder that the Finder visits.  It is where the Finder stores this position information.
NOTE:  The following suggestions will cause the Finder to forget the positions of everything in the target folder, but after that the Finder should be able to remember going forward.  If you have some icons in the correct positions and you do not want to forget where they were, you should take a screen shot, or create a map (with pencil and paper), or other way to memorize where they were.
There are utilities that can toggle the Finder internal settings to display invisible files, and then reset the settings so they are again hidden (you would trash the .DS_Store of the misbehaving folder while it was visible, then reloaunch the Finder or reboot, but a Finder relaunch is faster).
There are Terminal commands that can be used to just remove the .DS_Store file.
The killall Finder is needed to relaunch the Finder.  You could also use Apple menu icon -> Force Quit... -> Finder -> Relaunch.
If a folder does not have a .DS_Store when the Finder opens the folder, the Finder will create a new one and assigns all the icons a default position.  Then you should be able to reposition the icons as you desire, and it should remember them from that point forward.

  • Why are certain sites suspended? some of the backdoors for game sites show "This Account has been Suspended" when you try to access them.

What does "This Account has been Suspended" mean and why are certain sites suspend?

    This is what I get:
    ISP: Be Un Limited
    Organization: Be Un Limited
    Connection: Broadband
    Services: None Detected
    City: Horsham
    Region: West Sussex
    Country: United Kingdom
It can't be a problem with my ISP or my IP address since it only happens with Firefox. When I try out the same listings with other browsers it doesn't happen. eBay said Firefox must be making it seem as though I am in France. Goodness knows how or why??

  • Why are calls to certain countries more expensive ...

    Hello!
I just wonder why calls to ordinary phones are more expensive to certain countries than to others. For example a call to Afghanistan is 30 cents a minute, a call to Somalia or Guinea is 57 cents a minute, but a call to France is only 2 cents a minute. Why is that? Are you working on a solution to that? We have many immigrants in my country who would like to be able to make cheap calls to their home countries and not only to rich western countries.
    Thank you!
    Greetings from Andreas from Sweden

We are fellow users here on these forums, you're not talking to iTunes Support nor Apple. Forall items in the store the prices are set by the content providers, and with US prices you need to add on the state's sales tax to the listed price, which I think can be up to something like 7 percent.

  • Why are some items on itunes not available in other countries. like the book world war z by max brooks?

ok so i want to buy max brooks novel WWZ from the uk itunes store. but i cant becuase its only available in the USA..... why is that? why are some things limited to certain countries? im gonna go to the local book store and just buy a (much cheaper) hard back copy anyway, but it genuinely makes zero sense why itunes does this. very frustrating is a understatement as this happens with music and videos also! ......

It's the content providers decision, not Apple - the book publisher, record company, film studio have to grant Apple a license to sell their content in each country. So if the book publisher has only granted Apple a license to sell it in the US store but not the UK store, then Apple can't put in in the UK store.

  • HT204411 Why are some music artists available to download for some countries (i.e USA) but not others (i.e UK)?

Why are some music artists available to download for some countries (i.e USA) but not others (i.e UK) on Itunes?
    It's so frustrating!

  • HT204370 Why are movies excluded from iCloud?  They are the most expensive purchase from iTunes and just as valuable and important to be able to access anywhere from any device?

They are the most expensive purchase from iTunes and just as valuable and important to be able to access anywhere from any device?  I find it so frustrating that first I had to purchase iWorks for my Mac, then I had to purchase it all over again for my IOS device so I could use iCloud, then I purchase thousands of dollars of movies and am not able to store them in the cloud, yet we have only purchased the rights to the songs no differently than we have the movies.  Why would they exclude movies from icloud?

They are not part of icloud in all countries, becuase the movie industry in those copuntries does not allow Apple to offer this.

  • Why are Macbooks so much more expensive in NZ compared to US?

    Hi,
Just wondering why the apple products are so much more expensive in NZ than in US. I am looking at getting a new macbook pro 17" and saw it is NZ$4149, and US$2500. So I used the exchange rates to convert US$2500 to NZ$. It came to approx $3000. So why are they making us pay another $1000 in NZ??

    Economies of scale most likely.
    https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Economies_of_scale
Your question should be looked at in the opposite "Why are US citizens getting a discount?"
If you compare the two economies and what people tend to buy perhaps that would shed some light.
Perhaps the "Apple halo effect" doesn't reach OZ?

  • Why are iPhone/iPad Development courses so expensive?

Hi. I recently wanted to start learning about how to make iPhone/iPad apps after having a couple of good ideas for ones. Unfortunately, while I am very Mac proficient and computer savvy, I don't have any experience with coding. It appears you need some basic knowledge of coding to start making apps. But when I search around for online courses, or community college courses for iPhone/iPad development, they are all incredibly expensive, ranging from $1000 to $3,000.
I'm just wondering if anyone can help me understand why these courses are so pricy.
It would seem the best (cheapest) way to learn is to sift through all the free resources on the net and buy a book or two. Does anyone else have any good ideas? I think it would be very helpful to be in a classroom course, but there's no way I can afford thousands of dollars for something I essentially want to do as a hobby.
    Thank you!

You would need to ask this of the training company or school offering the course. But it's not inexpensive to hire teachers who know enough about development to teach a class, nor to provide a computer lab in which students can work.
If you want to do this just as a hobby, then the printed materials and web sites offering development help, along with the free course Stanford offers through iTunes U:
    http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=395605774
would be the way to go. If you have no experience in programming, you'll need to start by learning at least the rudiments of the C programming language before you dive into iOS development.
    Regards.

  • What the heck, why are Test benches so expensive!?

    No idea..
But on a similar note, I plati-dipped my rims and brake calipers.  They turned out nice.

So I was thinking of plasti dipping or vynil wrapping my PC case at home just to give it a change on the color. Of course I will want to use my PC to watch something online or play a game while working on my case so I will need something to put it in. I thought I should just get one of those open test benches for PC because its easy to install and remove. I was looking for some online thinking it was an easy $20 for a good one. NOPE.. A good one will run you $100. Literally the cheapest one I found was $45. Why are these things so expensive? Im probably going to take a pc from work and make my own.

Have to disagree with you there, Court Kizer. The Bullets&Bones site is, in many ways, where I really learned how to use GarageBand.

  • Disc Burner. Why are some files not readable or writeable?

    Hello,
I am trying to backup my friends computer files on a beige G3 (233 MHz). I am burning about 6 DVDs of AIF music files. Most of the files are about 30 - 40 Megs in size. Often I receive error messages on particular files that read:
"The operation cannot be completed because some data cannot be read or written.
    (Error code - 36)"
Followed by the choices: "Stop" or "Continue".
I have a bad feeling that my startup disk is too small but I am not sure.
Most of the files work fine. However some of the files cause disc burner to not be able to use them in the disc image before I burn. Why would this be?
    Here are the specifications:
Computer: beige G3 with two hard drives (one SCSI and one ATA hard drive) and a Pioneer DVR-110D DVD writer which is Apple supported (Apple system profiler indicates Apple supported on this DVD writer). My blank DVD disks are Sony Vermatim DVD-R (1 - 16x speed support). Although I think my beige G3 only writes them at about 2 or 4x.
I am using OS 10.1.5. My startup disk which has OS 10.1.5 in it is a 4 GIG SCSI disk. Is this big enough for a startup disk (for creating 4.5 GIG DVDs)? My files are on the second hard drive which is a 40 GIG ATA disk.
I have a bad feeling that my OSX startup drive is too small for disk burning - it is only 4 GIGs in total and OSX Disc burner (Disc copy) is first making a disk image on my startup volume before it burns it. Perhaps that disk image is too large for the startup volume. Is there any way I could ask OSX to put this disk image on the second larger hard drive instead (not the startup drive?).
Here is my process (I hope I am doing this right - I am new at this):
    1. I first insert a blank DVD-R
    2. A message pops up asking my if I would like to create a blank disc image for this disk (I think this is the typical Disk Copy utility window. I say "yes" and give it a name and choose the "DVD-R or DVD-RAM" option. (I am not sure if there are other important settings to choose here or better settings to use but I guessed the other options that seemed obvious. A blank disk image is created with an icon that looks like a DVD disk.
    3. Then I drag my chosen files to this blank disc image. It takes about 30 minutes to copy over. Thats when I receive the error message that some files couldn't be "read or written". The other files work fine but it would be nice if they all worked.
Why would some files not be readable or writeable?
    4. Then I choose file/burn in the top menu and the DVD is created. This takes another 20 - 30 minutes. At the very end of the process another message pops up saying:
"Sorry the operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occured (error code -28)" Followed by an "OK" button.
However all the files that made it onto the final DVD are fine - its just that its not all of the ones I originally chose in the first step when dragging to create the disk image.
Am I doing this the right way?
Why are some files not "readable or writeable" as it indicates in the error message?
Is my 4 GIG startup disk too small for this? or are the music files possibly corrupt? or could there be some other possible problem?
    Thanks

To follow up, I have some good news. After following your advice Kappy, it now works very well Thanks! Instead of using the 4 GIG volume for the OS, I am now using an 8 GIG partition on an 80 GIG drive. So now the OS has some room to operate. No disk errors occured on my first DVD
Now there was one problem. The second DVD burned gave me an error. I am not sure why but I am going to guess that because I had to installed the OS onto an 8 GIG partition maybe the OS needs to be rebooted in between disk burns because although 8 GIGs is certainly greater than the 4 GIGs I gave it last time, it still isn't a lot of space - maybe just enough to do one DVD at a time. Thats only a guess. So I rebooted to see if that clears the system out ready for the next DVD and I am trying to burn the second DVD again. If I remember I will report back. In any case, yes, this seems to be working. I hope this second DVD burns well too.
    Thanks Kappy
