Why are Tiger Connection Speeds Slower than Jaguar and PCs?

There is no doubt in my mind that Tiger (10.4.5 and 10.4.6 in my experience) connects to the Internet at speeds which are 20-25% slower than the speeds attained in Jaguar (I have no personal experience with Panther) and by PCs.
I have tested speeds at testmy.net and speakeasy.net on my Mac Mini running 10.4.6 (and before that 10.4.5), my iBook running 10.2.8, and my Dell Dimension 8250 running Windows XP. The iBook and Dell consistently measure 3400-3550 Kbps on a wireless connection to a LinkSys router and cable modem, whereas the Mini measures 2600-2900 Kbps (and sometimes much slower.) All three computers are next to one another, connecting to the same router and cable modem.
These results are very consistent over dozens of trials over a long period of time. They are not an aberration.
Any explanations or fixes? I have turned off IPv6, manually entered DNS servers in TCP/IP, tweaked settings with RMAC and Cocktail, but none of it has made a lasting difference. Interestingly, I have on a very few occasions found a speedup to PC and Jaguar levels on the first speed test only, after some of the listed adjustments.

Im marking this as answered even though it isn't, just to get it off the list of unresolved questions, where it has gathered dust for many months.

  • Why is java slower than C and C++

    Hi Guys:
I would like to know why Java is slower than C and C++ in terms of compilation speed...
Does it have to do with the fact that Java compiles to byte code first and then the JVM translates byte code to machine code which your processor can understand. whereas C and C++ compiles directly to machine code...
Any ideas on that,...let me know..

It's not necessarily. I would suggest that it always is; whencomparing
specific tasks.I would suggest that is never is (significantly)
    when non-trivial and non-specialized applicationsare
involved. Requirements and design always have a
much greater impact. There's no doubt that the design is the most
    important
aspect when writing a program, but assuming those
    things
are equal, the fact is that a c program will be
faster.Yes, but given the fact that there is almost zero chance that the requirements, design and implementation will be optimal, it means that the real differences between the languages are insignificant compared to the real difference caused by the other factors.
In the theorectical world C/C++ is faster. In the real world, most of the time, it is not significant.

  • Connection speed slowing down/degrading

I have been on BT infinity for a 6 monthss now - I had alot of trouble with the home hub but relaced it with an ASUS DSL-AC68U which is great (latest firmware installed).  However over the past month or so I have noticed by connection speeeds slowing - both up and down speeds.  I was getting around 70000kbps down and 20000kbps up but this has dropped to 52/12 ish.
The router auto diagnostics is also reporting an unstable DSL connection.
it seems there is a connection problem or something has changed at the exchange...?

    Hello,
If you're in a country where there's an apple shop (unfortunately not mine), go check it and ask the employee about it: he's gonna check your Iphone on a "device"
I've got an iphone 5 and it's working very well with me but I have to admit that its battery lasts (slower) than my Ipad 2.
Still i can help with some tips that may improve your iohone's battery by an hour in addition (hopefully):
    - close all apps by multitasking....
    - do NOT keep the brightness to the max
Believe me you're gonna regret changing your phone to a samsung
Hope i've helped and sorry for my bad english (has english as 3rd language)

  • Why is my second computer's (wireless) internet speed slower than my 'base' computer's (non-wireless)?

My son has a Macbook that  he uses in another room of our house. The router is at my desk, and is wired to my desktop MacMini. Why should his internet speed be slower than mine? Is there a remedy such as switching providers or routers?

According to the manual for the router you said you have, the maximum supported speed is 22 Mbps for 802.11b and 54Mbps for 802.11b/g - since that MacBook supports 802.11a/b/g/n, 54Mbps is the best case scenario if it's negotiating an "g" connection or 22Mbps if it gets a "b" type connection. So what is your internet connection speed? And that 22/54Mbps is best case - depends on how many wall and other obstructions it goes thru by the time it gets to his MacBook.
If he holds down the Option key and clicks on the WiFi icon in the title bar he should see what type of connection his MacBook has negotiated with the router. For example here is what mine shows (the connection type is listed as a 802.11/g, 2.4GHz, 54Mbps, channel 11, 20 MHz, etc):
Another thing to try and make a quick measure of the speed between his MacBook and the local router and your Mini is copy a big file from your computer to his. That will give you a good idea of the speed of his wireless connection to the router.
    Good luck...

  • Why are first connections slow and subsequent ones very slow or won't connect?

Since upgrading initial connections are often slow and subsequent connections very slow or won't connect. I have had to revert to Internet explorer which works fine!

The default of the pref network.http.max-connections has been increased from 30 to 256 in Firefox 6+ versions.
You can try to decrease the value of the pref <b>network.http.max-connections</b> from 255 to a more modest setting like 30 as used in Firefox 3 versions.

  • Why is Wireless G router slower than Wireless B?

I have a wireless B router (BEFW11S4 V4) that is dropping my internet connection sometimes on a daily basis.  To restore it, I have to unplug the power and plug it back in.  It's a pain and interferes with my work, so I purchased a wireless G router (WRT54G2) to replace it.  Setting it up was quick and painless, but slowed my internet to a crawl.  I know that wireless connections are slower than wired, but a direct connection was about 10 times faster (according to several online speed tests) which I find unacceptable.
I have since removed it and gone back to the older faulty router to restore my internet connect to a speed that at least allows me to do my work.  I was not unhappy with my connection speed before.  I only replaced the router because it was dropping the connection, but I cannot understand why the new router was so much slower.
Any thoughts, hints, or suggestions before I return the new router to the store?
    Thanks!

    1) What Internet connection speed are you paying for?
    2) What Internet connection speed do you get when you wire your computer directly to your modem?
    3) What Internet connection speed do you get when you wire your computer to the WRT54G2?
    4) What Internet connection speed do you get through a wireless connection to the WRT54G2?
    5) Is your computer's wireless adapter a wireless b?  g?  n?
There are many causes for poor wireless connections, and many solutions:
First of all, give your network a unique SSID. Do not use "linksys". If you are using "linksys" you may be trying to connect to your neighbor's router. Also set "SSID Broadcast" to "enabled". This will help your computer find and lock on to your router's signal.
Poor wireless connections are often caused by radio interference from other 2.4 GHz devices. This includes wireless phones, wireless baby monitors, microwave ovens, wireless mice and keyboards, wireless speakers, and your neighbor's wireless network. In rare cases, Bluetooth devices can interfere. Even some 5+ GHz phones also use the 2.4 Ghz band. Unplug these devices, and see if that corrects your problem.
In your router, try a different channel. There are 11 channels in the 2.4 GHz band. Usually channel 1, 6, or 11 works best. Check out your neighbors, and see what channel they are using. Because the channels overlap one another, try to stay at least +5 or -5 channels from your strongest neighbors. For example, if you have a strong neighbor on channel 9, try any channel 1 through 4.
Also, try to locate the router about 4 to 6 feet above the floor, in an open area. Do not locate it behind your monitor or near other computer equipment or speakers.  If you have external antenna, they should be vertical.
Also, in the computer, go to your wireless software, and go to "Preferred Networks" (sometimes called "Profiles" ). There are probably a few networks listed. Delete any network named "linksys". Also delete any network that you do not recognize, or that you no longer use.   Delete your current network  (this will remove any old settings.)  Reboot computer.  Return to "Preferred Networks" and re-enter your current network info (SSID, encryption (if any), and key (if any) ). Then select your current network and make it your default network, and set it to automatic login. You may need to go to "settings" to do this, or you may need to right click on your network and select "Properties" or "settings".  Reboot computer.  You should connect automatically (it can take up to 2 minutes).  If you have trouble connecting, in the computer, temporarily turn off your computer software firewall, and see if that helps.
If the above does not fix your problem, download and install the latest driver for your wireless card.
Some users have reported improved wireless performance by switching from WEP to WPA encryption.
If you continue to have problems, try the following:
For wireless g routers, try setting the "Transmission Rate" to 54 Mbps.
If you still have trouble, download and install the latest firmware for your router. After a firmware upgrade, you must reset the router to factory defaults, then setup the router again from scratch. If you saved a router configuration file, DO NOT use it.
    Hope this helps.

    MY BT Exchange:
    http://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange/SWLJ
According to Google maps I am 2.8 miles away but not sure on the distance when the crows flies.
    BT Speed Tester Results:
Download speedachieved during the test was - 1413 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 400-2000 Kbps.
    Additional Information:
    Your DSL Connection Rate :1920 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 1500 Kbps
So after having Plusnet for a few years and bad teething problems for most of it I decided to move to BT and have the unlimited package with the home hub 3. Plusnet provided me with speeds between 1.8Mbps - 1.9Mbps using their Thompson Router, on a D-link Router the speeds were the same.
I know that BT owns Plusnet but I thought why not cut out the middle man and go straight to the main supplier, considering others in my street have speeds of 2.3Mbps and over with the likes of Sky, Talk Talk and Supanet, it seemed like a no brainer to go with BT.
My IP Profile with BT is a max 1.5Mbps and the fastest I can have is 1.44Mbps which seems strange considering I had more with plusnet? I complained to BT, the recommended way was to chat online via their chat app which to me seemed a better option. So after my first online chat I was advised that my speed was very low but to wait for 10 days for the line to stabilize from install.
12 days later the speed hits 0.8Mbps which more than warranted my second online chat. They advised me to run the usual checks, the only thing different from my setup was the change in router switching the Plusnet out for the BT Home Hub 3. So we checked everything, Filters, Ethernet Cables, Master Socket and so on....done this so many times with Plusnet and past providers but thought it best to do it all again for the sake of the BT Customer Support.
They decide that it's a network fault and the Noise Margin was to high, a few tweaks on their end and my speed should increase in a day or two. The next day my speed was 2.1Mbps and hooray I could now play Xbox 360 online whilst others used the computers, something I could not do without lag when the speed was 0.8 and 1.4Mbps.
The very next day it was back down to 1.44Mbps and for the third time I had another online chat with BT. They suggested an engineer visit my property for which he did and changed out some internal wiring as he found some errors with my line. After he done his bits and bobs my speed decreased to 1.1Mbps, but he said he had to visit the cab outside to alter some things and then notify the exchange and my speed would increase dramatically in the next 48 hours.
The next day the speed was 1.8Mbps slowly dropping through out the day back to 1.2Mbps and stayed like that until I contacted BT for a 4th time. They ran a few tests and my speed increased but only to 1.44Mbps and this I was told was the best they could do. They advised my not to contact them again in regards to the line speed as this was the fastest I would ever get and they could no longer raise a fault with my line.
So here I am stuck with a measly 1.44Mbps wishing I was back with Plusnet, If I attempt to play online with any Xbox 360 game it is fine until someone in the house uses a computer, even to check their emails, the lag is terrible, my wife and kids are complaining about the internet speed, I have tweaked the computers for the fastest connection possible. Even when I don't go online with the Xbox 360, we still have slow connection when two people are using the computers at the same time.
I have the Xbox update with new dashboard and I also have the Lovefilm, 5OD, 4OD and youtube apps, works great when not using anything else, in fact love film states you can stream movies to 3 devices the same time, but this slow connection basically ties the whole of my family to use one device at a time, a shame really when we all like to do different things sometimes.

It's been like this since install in early November, as my post states they did up my speed to just over 2mbps but it lasted one day and went back to 1.44Mbps. When the engineer came out he change some wiring for me just to be sure and said there were no errors or problems at me end, then the speed dropped to 1.2Mbps on his own device. I then complained again later that day and it went up to 1.7 ish and dropped back to my usual speed of 1.44, a speed that enables only one family member at a time to use any device, but can all use the net if we visit a basic text website with no pictures or flash.
Our PC's and Laptops, Netbooks are all Dual Core, Windows 7 with huge drives and lots of Ram, not that this matters at this time because the engineer tested his own equipment via the master socket.
If I read Sky news then nobody can play Xbox online or stream Lovefilm, Youtube, BBC iPlayer or use any other computer without dreadful lag and slow speed. The speed can cope fine with all over the above when only one person uses it.
My neighbour is with Supanet and he uses his pc upstairs whilst his wife uses her laptop and their son plays online via Xbox 360 all at the same time, his speed is 2.6 at the moment and he lives next door to me?
My other neighbour on the otherside of me has Talk Talk and they get 2.3Mbps...I mean Talk Talk gives them that speed? That truly is amazing for them but forget about BT matching any such speed, they can't even match the speeds I previously had with Plusnet and I thought they were slow

  • IPad Mini 3 LTE Upload Speeds Slower than iPad Mini Gen 1

I have both an iPad Mini Gen 1 (non-retina) and a new iPad Mini 3.  Both units are WiFi + Cellular and are on Verizon Wireless.  The iPad Mini Gen 1 indicates full signal strength when on LTE, 5 dots.  The iPad Mini 3 indicates only 2 or 3 dots.  The difference in the number of dots, or bars, could simply be a difference in the method used to calibrate signal strength.   My first impression though was that the new Mini 3 did not have as sensitive a receiver as the Gen 1 Mini, so I decided to do some bandwidth tests.
Both units indicated a ping time averaging 40 milliseconds.  The download speeds were comparable, approximately 23 Mbps.  The upload speed for the iPad Gen 1 was approximately 20Gbps whereas the new Mini 3 was much slower, only 5Gbps.  Both my phones are also on Verizon and they gave me speed numbers like the Gen 1 mini.
So why would the new Mini 3 be so much slower when uploading, and why would the signal strength be so much weaker?  I must add that the Verizon tower I connect through is line-of-sight about 1/4 mile away on the hill behind my house.  I should have full signal strength on any device.
Getting technical here, all I can think of is that the two iPads are operating on different LTE frequency bands and not connecting through the same tower.  The iPad Mini Gen 1 can only operate on Verizon's 700MHz LTE which is band 13.  The new iPad Mini 3 can operate on either LTE band 13 or the new 1700MHz band 4.  The new 1700MHz band is now being used to alleviate congestion on the old 700MHz band.  Perhaps since my device is one of the few that can operate on the new 1700 MHz frequencies, Verizon is forcing my device to use that band?  Maybe that could account for the upload speed difference between the two devices?

I find it interesting to hear that  the new Mini 3 has this issue. I purchased two iPhone 6 pluses and activated them both around the 1st of October.. Both 6's are upgrades from 5's. I have been going round and round with both Verizon TSS and AppleCare Senior Tech Support about having 100's of dropped calls, weaker signal strength than my iphone 5's and the iphone 6's tendency to grab 3G service when both iPhone 5's  have solid LTE service. Apple engineers have had me jump through many redundant hoops including multiple restores, network resets, setting the phone up as new, having Verizon reprovision the line, I have even had one iPhone 6 replaced and tried three SIM cards. Things I have figured out on my own are that toggling Airplane Mode on/off usually makes the iPhone 6 switch back to LTE (But only for a little while. And doing this also temporily increases LTE signal strength when LTE is on 1 dot.) and as you suspect about your Mini 3 I have confirmed that the iPhone 6 Plus is almost always on Band 4 (XLTE Band) (The iPhone 6 does sometimes switch to Band 13. The iPhone 5 only supports Band 13 and therefore is always on that band).  Something to note about Band 4 vs. Band 13 is that there are two important differences in these bands. Band 4 has double the bandwidth of band 13 (20Mhz vs. 10MHz). Band 4 operates in the 1700 MHz frequency range and Band 13 operates in the 700 Mhz frequency range. One pitfall of Band 4 being in the 1700Mhz range is that the signal can travel less distance than Band 13 can in the lower 700 MHz range. Being that Band 4 has less reach it leads me to conclude that is the reason why I am seeing less signal strength on the iPhone 6 Plus (And you on the Mini 3).
**The way I finally figured out how to determine the band the iPhone's are using I found searching the web for peole experiencing my issues. Verizon could not tell me what band I was using, even when I was on the phone with them. On the iPhone there is a sequence of numbers, pound signs and asterisks that you enter in the dialer and press send. This brings up a field test that tells you many things about your network/carrier service (Many things which are Greek to me, as I am not a cellular engineer). Using this field test I have driven hundreds of miles watching what band I am on and my signal strength ( In what I assume is decibels). All that I have learned has yet to assist me in having Apple or Verizon resolve my issues.
