Why aren't my PDF icons red?

My desktop icons for Adobe PDF files look like TextEdit icons with a binding up one side -- very boring and difficult to tell apart from many similar looking icons on my desktop. I was thinking that this is the best I can get with Leopard but I see that this unhappy Stacks user - http://www.davidillig.com/whatamess.shtml - has the regular red PDF icons on his desktop so I'm wondering why I don't.
When I do a Get Info on one of my boring PDF icons, the icon at the top of the Get Info window is the red icon that I want -- so why is it not showing on the desktop? Do I need to install Adobe Reader -- I currently only have Acrobat Pro installed and all PDF files are set to open in Pro (which is how I want it since Reader is too limited for my needs)? Hard to imagine that Pro would give me different file icons though...
Simon

It's showing an icon preview of the document. I imagine it is boring looking because the file itself contains boring content. You can turn off icon preview with "Show View Options."

  • HT2500 I sometimes get e-mails where the sender sends me several PDF's attachments. These attachments appear already opened on the e-mail unlike most PDF's which I open by clicking on the PDF icon. Why does this happen?

    I sometimes get e-mails with pdf attachments. However instead of opening a PDF icon the body of the e-mail message has the PDF's already opened. Why does this happen? Is there anything I can change on my mac book pro to make these PDF's come thru with their individual icons which can then be opened.

    This is a long-standing design flaw in Apple Mail.
    Prior to Mavericks, this command in Terminal would stop the annoying behavior:
    defaults write com.apple.mail DisableInlineAttachmentViewing -bool yes
    This Terminal command stopped working in Mail 7.1 under Mavericks. I have reported this to Apple as both a feature request and a bug. You should too.

  • Why having displayed both generic icons for the PDF and JPEG files and automatic preview of the JPEG files in an ordinary folder are mutually exclusive in Win7?

    In Win7 Pro all my:
    PDF documents, with the 'Large Icons' option chosen in the View tab, display contents of their first page with a tiny thumbnail in the icon's lower right corner, instead of a generic PDF icon.
    JPEG files show Icon size photos, instead of a generic Nero 9 PhotoSnap Essentials icon.
    Folders containing the JPEG photos, however, automatically show preview, when opened, which is desirable feature.
    I found that the Win7 option "Always show icons never thumbnails" in the View tab: Windows Explorer -> Tools -> Folder Options, (where ironically the present 'thumbnails' have nothing to do with 'Thumbnails' from the View option in WinXP), causes the unwanted effects described in points 1 & 2, when unchecked.
    Checking this option solves the problem of the PDF and Nero icons. This time, however, I can only see a Nero 9 PhotoSnap Essentials icons, instead of photos preview on opening of any standard folder with the JPEG photos.
    Did I make a mistake somewhere or maybe Microsoft made changes in Win7 with respect to WinXP, which make it impossible to have both the features working at the same time?

    Hi,
    You can install the Win 8.1 software drivers using this link.

    Once installed, it should have the same features as the Win 7 drivers for scanning.

  • PDF icon images appear on desktop, but not in folders?

    I just updated to Windows 7. Before the update I could only view pdf icons on the desktop and inside folders would be a screenshot pdf icon image of the file. This was very helpful when using a lot of pdf files.
    NOW, after installing Windows 7, I have the exact opposite. I can see PDF image icons on my desktop, but when I go into a folder, I get the standard Adobe pdf red-white icon (no image).
    Has anyone experienced this? Ive googled this and Im not the only one with this problem. Has anyone found a fix for this?
    Thanks
    Update: I forgot to add that PowerPoint files, jpegs and bmp files still work and you can still see the preview images. Just not PDFs.

    graffiti - thanks for the reply. I did as you suggested but it didnt work. Now some icons are showing up but I dont know why nor do I know if this is a adobe issue or a windows 7 issues. While googling it looks like each side is blaming the other. Here is a screen shot. Some icons appear and one does not. I opened it and re-saved it but still doesnt show a thumbnail.

  • PDF icons freezing finder

    Hi
    Lately when I select a pdf icon in the finder (column view) it gives me the spinning beach ball and renders the finder frozen for around 2-3 mins before it comes back to life and shows the pdf thumbnail.
    Any ideas why this has just started happening? The pdfs aren't huge.
    Thanks

    Don't know, since I seldom, if ever use column view, but if you've selected show icon preview and show the preview column, maybe the Finder's having trouble doing that.

  • PDF Icons are all different

    Why is it that the PDF icons on my desktop are different from each other? One is the standard red/Adobe PDF icon, another looks like a page, another looks like a binder, another is a photo showing the content of the file. All were created within the same program (Photoshop) as I was saving multiple files. Incidentally, they are all files containing one photo each, but only one file shows the photo as the PDF icon.
    I saved them through the print menu.
    Thanks for any insight to this!
    Jeff

    No matter how they were created, the icon relates to the app that is the default for the file.
    Right-Click one of the files that has the right icon/thumbnail on it and select "Get Info"
    Then under "Open With" select the correct opening app which should be the correct one in this case.
    Then under that, where it says,
    "Use this app to open all documents like this" click the button
    "Change All"
    That should fix the problem.

  • Why do old Adobe PDF files which I attach to a document show as Firefox files instead of an Adobe PDF file after an Adobe Reader update??

    Why do old Adobe PDF files which I attach to a document show as Firefox documents in my files instead of an Adobe PDF file after an Adobe Reader update?  My saved files Adobe PDF documents also appear as Firefox documents instead of Adobe PDF files.

    NO MATTER WHAT VERSION OF WINDOWS YOU'RE USING:
    Right click one of the PDFs with the Word icon.
    Select "Properties"
    Where it says "Opens With" there is a button to change it from Word to Adobe Reader, which should be in the list of available programs that pops up.
    Choose Reader, and click APPLY before clicking OK.
    That will change ALL PDFs to Reader as the default application.

  • PDF icon changed after deploying Reader 9.4.0 though Group Policy

    I extracted the .msi from the Reader 9.4.0 .exe, and deployed the software through group policy. Everthing works fine except now all .pdf icons show as a different Adobe icon, as opposed to the usual white icon with the red cursive "A" and the little red "pdf" box along the top left. However, if manually install the program using the .msi, the icon issue does not happen. There is nothing in the custimization Wizard for this, and I am hesitant to use Orca to try and change the .msi. The file association in windows is correct, just the icon has changed. Please help

    I did the same as you.
    // Open the field to allow user entries
    NumericField1.access = "open";
    // Allow override, means you will not get an error message when the calculated value is changed
    NumericField1.calculate.override = "disabled";
    NumericField1.value.float.value = "0";
    Restore original state of the field.
    NumericField1.access = "readOnly"
    NumericField1.calculate.override = "error"
    NumericField1.rawValue = null
    NumericField1.execCalculate()
    But you're right, the restore does not work.
    I tested execEvent("calculate") and execCalculate() with no avail.
    Very odd!

  • Why aren't some RH styles working in WebHelp?

    All,
    I can't get bullets or simple indents to display correctly in WebHelp and can't see what I'm doing wrong.
    We're using TCS 3.5, FM 10.0.2.419, and RH 9.0.2.271. We're single-sourcing content from Frame to output in (1) PDF and (2) WebHelp.  We have one set of FM templates and, if possible, wish to avoid having to have one set for PDF and one for WebHelp.
    We want to generate WebHelp from Frame without using RoboHelp, but we are forced to at least set up a RoboHelp project and link our FrameMaker book in order to get functionality we need in the WebHelp.  Otherwise we wouln't use RH at all.
    I created a RH project, linked my FM "online help" book (a special FM book that contains selected chapters from two print books), generated topics in RH (File>Update>Generate), set a few project settings in RH (File>Project Settings), updated the book in RH (File>Update>Update All), and saved all. Then I closed RH, opened FM, and published (File>Publish), specifying output type (WebHelp), output location, and the location of my RH project. The WebHelp I get is functional but now I need to define styles.
    Last week I could not find an easy way to define styles in my css via RH unless I had previously defined my styles in RH's Conversion Settings window (File>Project Settings>Edit>Import tab>Edit FM Settings button). So I have been defining styles there, applying them to the RH project, and occasionally exporting them to an isf just to have a backup.  When I next generate WebHelp from FM, I point only to the RH project, not the ISF, because the styles are defined in the RH project (I apply them to the project by clicking Apply and OK).
    Using this process, for some styles (bullets and indents, for example), the definitions I have in the RH Conversion Settings dialog box are not reflected in the WebHelp output.
    When I look at the css in RH (File>Project Settings>Import tab>default.css Edit With RoboHelp CSS Editor), what I see is what I see in the Conversion Settings dialog.  So why aren't some of the settings I specified in the Conversion Settings window reflected in WebHelp?
    Any ideas are most appreciated!
    Susan

    I haven't got any experience using the "newer" Generate function in FM, but it seems to not give you much control over how stuff comes out vs. the "standard" way of using RH with linked FM content. RH is just the tool for creating WebHelp, just like Acrobat is the tool for creating PDFs.
    There's a couple of ways to control how stuff appears when doing the FM to RH to help route - one is to use a FM template within your RH project that has all your mappings in it - Matt Sullivan often recommends this approach and there's more info about it on his roundpeg.com blog.
    The other way is to set the conversion settings and then use a customized css to be used in the SSL recipe to be applied to all topics when the help is created.

  • Why a different Plug In Icon?

    I've been getting different results running Applets on a web page depending what system I'm running them on.
    Have tried different versions of Internet Explorer, Java Plug-In etc. but can't understand why the different results.
    VISUALLY THERE IS ONE BIG DIFFERENCE
    On the systems that work properly the Java Icon I get in the Windows System Tray (those little Icons at the bottom right of the screen) is Duke (the little red nosed java bean thing).
    On the systems that do not work I get the Java Coffee Cup icon.
    WHY DO I GET DIFFERENT ICONS?
    It must indicate something different installed or configured. If so what. What do I need to do to get the Duke icon to appear?
    I have a feeling that if I can get this to happen the code will work on those systems.
    Regarding the actual problems I experienced, I have already posted queries about those.

    The duke icon is from java plug-in 1.3_01 and in 1.3_02 they changed it to a cup of coffee (which looks quite bad, I must say).
    Actually, this is the reason I didn't upgrade the plugin to 1.3_02...
    Check your plug-in version.

  • .pdf icons saved as 'plain text' style on desktop

    Acrobat 8 Pro
    Windows Vista Home Premium SP1
    Hello Forum,
    As suject, with the new Acrobat 8 Pro, my saved pdf files (pdf icons on desktop) are showing as 'plain text' view style. How do i make them back to the classic .pdf style.
    Thanks

    Hello Bill and thank you for your reply.
    No, i can open them indeed, it's not a file association issue. They (icons) aren't really in 'plain text' view, it's a sort of way how they are displaying (looks like you can choose the way of displaying or something like that). By the way, I noticed that if i refresh my desktop (by pressing F5 key), these pdf icons are back to their 'classic' view but just for a miliseconds, before they turn to the strange behavior that i mentioned above. Could it be my display's refreshing rate or something like this?
    Thank you again
