Why aren't my smart playlists updating?

Right click on the playlist you want to sync on your PC. Click on 'duplicate' and a new playlist will appear ie. recently added # 1. Sync again and hopefully this new playlist will appear on your I Pod.

Smart playlist update

Can anybody tell me how often you can expect smart playlists to update? is it possible to set so smart playlists update daily or weekly?

On the computer, at least with version 6 and the Mac version, they update on the fly immediately. For example, in my "Not yet Played" Smart Playlist which has the rule of a play count of zero, as soon as the song finishes and the play count it updated, it gets removed from the playlist immediately.
On the iPod it works a bit differently. As long as you are still in the playlist playing from it, it won't update. So if you pause of put the iPod to sleep, then start it up later where you are still on the last track that was playing, the playlist is unplayed. But if you then stop that playlist, go play something else (say in another playlist), when you go back to that playlist, it will update to reflect any changes since the last time you were playing it.
So in other words, for that same "Not Yet Played" playlist I have, say there are 180 songs in it. I start playing, get to 13 of 180, pause it. Hours later I start up again still at 13 of 180 and keep on playing more tracks. Always says 180. Now say after number 50 finished, I dump out of the playlist and go play a video. When I go back into the "Not Yet Played" playlist, my playcount will start at 1 of 130, so those 50 were removed after exiting and reentering the playlist.

Does live Smart Playlist updating affect battery?

After spending months campaigning for live Smart Playlist updating to be fixed on iPod photo I have noticed a drastic decrease in battery life on my 60Gb since it's reintroduction.
I have a lot of Playlists that update each time a track is played. Does this help to drain battery?
Just clutching at straws before I send it back...

When i sync my ipod why doesnt my smart playlists update its settings (ie recently played list does not reflect songs only played in 2012)

i set up a smart playlist for my ipod touch i only want songs that i've played in 2012 show up in that playlist. but when i sync it on my ipod it still has other songs in it. i tried deleting the list and all but it still comes back. i copy to play order and it doesnt work as well. help. thanks

I have so, so many smart playlists that I think my iTunes is starting to drag. So I'm starting to uncheck "Live Updating". So when do these playlists update? When I view them? Is there some trigger I don't know about? Is there a way to do a playlist update sweep?

Why itunes erased my smart playlist on my iphone 4 afer backing up?

After syncing my Iphone 4 and my Itouch Itunes erased all my smart playlist. How can i fix this? It is really annoying.

Select the Playlists for syncing in iTunes, then Sync.

Why aren't my plugins auto updating like I have it set for?

I have set up for my add-ons to automatically update but find they are not always doing that. i.e., Java and Adobe. I know that I can manually do it but do not want to have to and that is why I have it set up to auto update.

Only extensions can be updated via Firefox.<br />
Plugins like Flash and Java are installed via other programs and software on your computer and you need to updates plugins yourself manually if they do not check that automatically when they are used.

Why when I removed smart playlists from my iPhone are they removed from iTunes?

So I was trying to remove some playlists from my iPhone then reload them so the sort order would be correct. But after I removed the playlists from my phone then synced with iTunes, the playlists were removed from iTunes. Why? Can they be recovered? I had a few I really liked.

I'm sorry to hear you are having this issue with your iPhone. If you are having issues with incomplete transfers of your purchases from your iPhone to iTunes on your Mac, you may want to double check that you are following the steps as outlined in the following article:

Smart Playlist's not updating dynamically

There seems to be a little glitch in the smart playlists (SPL) on my touch 2G. I used to manually manage the music on my device and I noticed no issue with the SPL's being dynamic. However I started syncing the music recently and I observed that the SPLs wouldn't update dynamically on the device.
For example, I have a SPL called Unrated that contains random songs that are not rated by me yet. When I rate them on the device, I expect them to disappear from the Unrated SPL, which is not happening (used to happen when i was manually managing music).
Am I missing something? Please help!

Dynamic update of smart playlists when playing music untethered on an iPod touch 2G set to manually manage music is broken with the latest iPhone 3.0 Software Update for iPod touch. Here we go again on this issue. It seems to be broken or purposefully disabled on every other update for the iPod.
On a side note, I noticed that my iPod now occasionally displays a wait screen when opening Music. I found this happens when I alter my playlists in iTunes.app, then disconnect the iPod for a session of untethered listening. Perhaps the iPod is actually building the smart playlists then, perhaps not, perhaps a smart developer will take advantage of this to trigger the smart playlist updating.

How to update Smart Playlists without Live Updating?

I have around 100 Smart Playlists and 25,000 songs in iTunes. Many of the Smart Playlists have interrelations and multiple nested rules.
iTunes pretty much grinds to a hault every time I do anything. It generally freezes for 10-40 seconds every time a "change" happens, including when a song finishes playing. If I drag and drop a 12 song album into iTunes, it will freeze for several minutes.
Assuming this was due to the Live Updating of the Smart Playlists, I unchecked the Live Updating from most of the playlists. This took the general performace of iTunes to an acceptable speed, but now these Smart Playlists NEVER update.
I'd like to find a solution to allow the playlists to update while iTunes runs at an acceptable speed.
Is there a way to have certain Smart Playlists update only when iTunes starts up?
Is there a file menu or button way to tell iTunes to update ALL Smart Playlists that are not Live Updating?

I've also had a look at the available scripting commands but I can't find any that trigger smart playlist updating or that would have been a way to approach the problem.

Smart Playlist's don't update (iphone 3GS Windows 7 64 bit)

Ever since I updated iTunes to 10 and my iOS to 5, none of my smart playlists update on my phone.
They update in ITunes, but that update never makes the synch over to my phone.
For example I have a smart playlist that takes my top 25 highest rated and least played songs thta haven't been played in the last ten days.
After I play the song on the iPhone, it updates the smart playlist in iTunes (removes the song and replaces it if one is avaliable), but that update never makes it to the phone. The phone still has the prior plalist on it.
I've tried removing the playlist, I've tried teling iTUnes to not synch that playlist (and when I do the playlist is removed from the phone) and then putting it back, and it still has the old playlist.
Any thoughts?

Smart Playlists on Zen Vision:M and Creative Media Organizer Software

I come from the iPod world, where, once a playlist is created in iTunes, the playlist is transferred to the iPod, and is automatically updated each time you sync. That's why it's called "smart" playlist.
I can create a smart playlist using the Creative Media Organizer software. It automatically updates the playlist, based on the rules I defined. However, the playlist created on the Media Organizer does NOT get transferred to the Vision:M player! What's the point in that?
I can, of course, copy the smart playlist to the Vision:M manually... but there are two HUGE problems with that...
) The smart playlist becomes a "static" playlist... it does not get updated when you sync -- the music in the playlist never changes (even though the original smart playlist is updated on each sync),
2) The software recopies the *music* back to the Vision:M each time you create a playlist! This means that it overwrites the music that was there, with the (same) music in the playlist!! This takes FOREVER, if there are a lot of titles in the playlist! This is obviously a brain-dead way of doing things! All the software/Vision:M needs to do, is to copy the actual music files that don't currently exist on the player, and then create a text file that contains the *location* of the music... in other words, an M3U playlist file! One of the (many) issues with doing things the way this software does it, is that each time a track appears in a separate playlist, a duplicate entry for that song appears in the Vision:M's music list! So, if you have 5 playlists, and each one contains "Mozart's 5th", then when you list all the songs on your Vision:M, you'll get 5 copies of "Mozart's 5th" listed! Dumb!
Any way around these problems? Can I have smart playlist that gets transferred to the player so that it contains only the songs I want? Does it *have* to recopy ALL the songs to the player, each time I create a playlist? Does it *have* to add duplicate entries to the list of files on my Vision:M?
Is the software *really* as dumb as I think it is, or am I just being a BDU (Brain Dead User)?

You can only automatically sync playlists using Windows Media Player 0 as far as I know. There's lots of other software out there that can use the Media Transfer Protocol of the Vision:M, but I'm not sure what they can do.
Creative's software is desperately lacking in the playlist sync area, so you're not being a BDU

Why do some Smart Playlists Auto-Update while some don't?

I followed the old thread about auto-updating smart playlists not updating automatically on the iPod. Apparently the 2006-1-10 update fixes it, but some smart playlists still aren't updating for me. The simple rating-based playlists work (they update), but more complex smart playlists such as this do not work:

According to this support document: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301910 smart playlists should update based on any criteria, but I'm not seeing that. Am I doing something wrong? What types of smart playlists have people gotten to work?

I have smart playlists combined in a folder that I use to make playlists to fit on devices. Lately the folder isn't updating with the playlists inside it, so the folder shows songs that aren't in any of its playlists. Can anyone help?

I'm using the latest iTunes on Windows 8. Since upgrading to iTunes 12 my old system of smart playlists within folders have not worked properly. I used to have a folder containing three folders with smart playlists in them, but I had to abandon this and copy all the smart playlists into one folder, as the nested structure didn't seem to update anymore. This worked for a couple of months (even though it was less convenient and didn't exactly accomplish what I had been able to do on iTunes 11 and earlier).
More recently, however, I've found that the folder in the simplified structure also doesn't work properly. The smart playlists are set up to remove songs after they were played, but now the folder seems to retain some songs even after they've disappeared from the playlist that included them. It seems to be building up 'ghosts' of songs that were played and were then supposed to disappear as per the smart playlist setup. I tried copying all the playlists out of the folder, but ended up with the folder 'properties' showing that it contained a number of songs, even when it was empty.
I also noticed that I'm unable to reference the folder in the conditions of any new playlists I set up - I get the error message that the folder relies on smart playlists that cannot be updated. In response to this I reviewed all the playlists, but saw no errors.
Anybody else have this problem?

It may be best to recreate the folder and the smart playlists from scratch.

Why are my smart playlists not updating?

I tried to create a new smart playlist, and could not get even the simplest one to populate with any music. I then noticed that my current smart playlists are not updating. For example, I have an UNRATED smart playlist (Rating is less than *), and it used to update whenever I would rate a song in the list. It currently has rated songs in it. This is the first time I've been working in iTunes since I accepted the iCloud update. Is there a known problem?

Created a similar post about 1 month ago - with no response...its driving me crazy too! Would love a fix!
