Why attachments only opens in excel, even jpg files?

Although i tried to change the program, it keeps opening at excel, with a a lot of nonsense characters...

Are you having problems opening email attachments. Or have you downloaded the email attachments and are then unable to open them ?
Your XP OS will have registry settings to determine choices of opening files, although there are other ways of setting that. Are you able to open jpg image files ok on your computer normally ?
What is the "office" plugin that you are using, does disabling that help ?

I've always been able to open word, excel, pdf & jpeg files as attachments on my iphone 5. But recently, everytime I tried to open one of these, the file image turned up all grey, and in the case of jpeg files, it just kept on loading, loading & loading, but never finished loading ... It seems like this happened after I updated to IOS 6.1.4 recently... This is just a guess. Could anyone help me with this? Thank you.

Thank you for your reply. It helped me get to a solution. In essence I needed to copy the Unix file to an internal table and then save it to the end user's PC file. Then I am able to open the document / attachment.
I created a new function to:
1) call method cl_gui_frontend_services=>directory_browse, to ask the end user to pick a PC directory to copy the Unix file attachment to.
2) Then using the following code, copy the Unix file (as determined by application or user) to an internal table. Note that the line is not limited by a certain length.
types: begin of t_tab,
          line type string,
         end of t_tab.
data: k_wa_itab type t_tab,
        t_it_itab type standard table of t_tab.
open dataset v_unixfilename for input in binary mode.
if sy-subrc <> 0.
    raise unix_filename_read_error.
endif.
do.
    read dataset v_unixfilename into k_wa_itab-line.
    if sy-subrc <> 0.
      exit.
    endif.
    append k_wa_itab to t_it_itab.
enddo.
close dataset v_unixfilename.
3) Using call method cl_gui_frontend_services=>gui_download, save the contents of the internal table to the PC directory from step 1 above.
4) Open the Attachment from the end users PC via:
call method cl_gui_frontend_services=>execute
It seems like a long way to get this to work, but it is working. If there is a better way maybe someone else can fill in the blanks. Ideally a tool to read and open from a file from Unix without using the cl_gui_frontend_services would be ideal.

I lost 500 jpg files in my iPhoto library named i.e from 1.jpg to 500.jpg and I want to recover ONLY them from an 1TB external WD My Book e-sata disk, to avoid time waste and unwanted jpg files.
I' ve used data recovery software as Photorec, but it recovers all the jpgs it can find, it can't search for specific name files and as it uses its own naming for the files it recovers, i have thousands of photos to look up and find these i really want.Not to mention so much waiting time.
Even if you know other technology tool that can help me please tell me.
I've also used StellarPhoenixMacDataRecovery that is not file carving tool, but with similar results.

When saving files from the internet, why doesn't Firefox 'know' to put .jpg files in "Photos" and pdf files in "Documents"? IE always saved photos in the "Photos" file and documents in the "Documents" file. Firefox makes me choose every time. Very annoying.

How about if Firefox is programmed like IE in this ONE thing...
When saving files from internet sources, if the file ends in a typical photo extension such as .jpg, .bmp, .tif etc. it defaults to save it in your PHOTOS folder.
When saving anything like a .doc, .pdf etc. it defaults to save it to your DOCUMENTS.
You could still change it to 'desktop' if that if really where you want all your photos and documents... or some other folder that you decide, but DEFAULTS to the LOGICAL folder.
I have carpal tunnel SO bad that even typing this suggestion is painful and having to make the extra click along with moving the mouse EVERY time I want to save something is painful.
ALSO, I shouldn't need a bunch of ADDONS to accomplish this. I tried downloading one and it did nothing. The problem still exists.

AIR does not support this inherently. However, you could write code to parse these file formats. For example, the following is an ActionScript 3.0 library for reading and writing Excel files:

You have several scripting choices within Windows. At a basic level you've got "batch files" - which run a series of command interpreter commands, and have a file extension of .BAT or .CMD. If you just wanted to open a list of Word documents, then assuming that the path to Word is correct (something like this below) you could list these in a file with a .BAT extension and run this (e.g. double click on it):

Another script language is VBScript, which was the example I gave. VBScript is available on most Windows platforms and can be run from a command prompt or within Windows. If you save the text I gave you above to a file with a .VBS extension you can double-click to run it (Windows) or open a command prompt and type CSCRIPT MyVBScript.VBS (assuming that's the name of the your .VBS file).
Other script languages are available to achieve the same thing, including Powershell, however you'd need to have Powershell available on your PC.

Opening existing photographs or .jpg files

When I try and open some of my .jpg files, photoshop wants to create a new file. Its New file window opens. I can open and view these files in a different photo editor. I am not sure whats going on. Can someone please help me??

It's just named MG7234.jpg . As to the wrong extension, no as I mentioned. I can open it with another photo viewer / editor and it shows up fine.
Some viewers are tolerant of files that have the wrong extension. Photoshop isn't, though usually it will just generate an error message that the input file parser couldn't deal with the file.
Is this a file right out of your camera? Or has it been edited and resaved?

No. Not at that level anyway. You'd have to be talking about a file in excess of 32767 pixels on a side to get into worrisome territory with PS7.
What version of Windows are you running Photoshop 7.0 on anyway?

Can you actually see that the attachment has a .jpg extension? Some mail systems strip it off (I've seen AOL do that) which makes the attachment difficult to open.

Ensure when you send the attachment that Mail is sending it at full quality. The menu for this should be at the bottom of the new message composition window.

Cannot open some Excel 97-2003 files on iphone

I'm having some troubling behaviour with openening Excel attachements on my iPhone recieved as email attachments.
Documents from Excel 2003 seem to open fine, be they saved as ".xls", or specifically as "Excel 97-2003" .xls files, or even in the newer .xlsx format.
However, sporadically, "Excel 97-2003" documents (and seemingly only this format) won't open. It seems to be when this format is generated by another program like Access.
Any insights? This is really a problem for my job communication.

My contract is up and I was looking at getting a new iPhone but if this is going to keep being an issue I am going to have to look at switching to one of the Droids. It sounds like your file associations are messed up and Reader is trying to open your .jpg files. Is this correct?

Click on the Apple and then About this Mac>More Info. Click on the "Storage" tab to see what is using up all of your storage.
That might help you to determine what you need to clean up.
