Why Audio Conforming?

I'm just curious as to why Encore has to conform AC3 audio files. The Encore 2.0 Help Center has no info at all on audio conforming.
What is the purpose of the conformed audio file, especially if the file is in an AC3 file format ready for the DVD?
Is the conformed audio only used for playback within Encore and nothing else?
Encore 1.5 played my AC3 files without conforming, why does Encore 2.0 need to?
My 2 hour long AC3 file is 175MB. The conformed file is 2.7GB! This is a waste of disc space and a waste of processing time. I often create 2 hour DVDs with 8 audio tracks using AC3 files. Now my project is going to require 21.6GB of space for conformed audio files and take about 16 minutes to conform the 8 AC3 files!

> Why indeed.....
It's a nice feature to be able to listen to the sound as it will sound on DVD - maybe, but how many of you does that ? I somewhat thrust the encoder, specify the bitrate and pretty much know what I will get.
It should of course been an option. And why 32bit sound ? Just to make the files bigger ?? Some say it's better because the prosessor is 32bit. Will Encore 3 then use 64bit audio to match the new prosessors ??
All audio software can mix almost unlimited tracks of 16bit audio and many throws in a videotrack too....only Adobe does this conforming and the worst is that they are probably proud of it.
(sigh)
I refer you to Joe Bowdens original answer in the second post in this thread.
i Encore uses the Premiere playback engine, which does not support AC3.
Removing the conforming means one of 3 things:
1 - A completely different playback engine, and given the complaints about the OS one, that is not a good idea.
2 - No audio in preview at all.
3 - Paying more money for Encore so there can be an AC3 decoder included. As this is licensed technology, it is NOT free.

  • Audio conforming nightmare - Premiere 2014 - Mac OS 10.9.5 - AVCHD

    We shoot a lot of AVCHD and I've often had audio conforming problems but I think it is actually worse in the latest version.
    I did a four camera shoot of a guest lecturer yesterday.  I archived all four cards (entire cord structure) and then wisely put them onto our pristine backup because I know Premiere 'touches' source folders.  Then I brought them into Premiere and waited for the clips to conform.  After they did **none** of them had any audio (even though the original files were fine).  I couldn't find any evidence of conforming files in the STREAM.  Where is that information stored?
    I decided the easiest thing to do was just to trash the project and start again.  This time I imported each card individually, waited for it to conform and checked that the audio was there before I brought in the next card.  The first three went in fine; the last one did not.  The audio conformed but it sounded garbled, like it decompressed wrong.  Also, it stopped about halfway through even though the audio on the card was fine.
    Finally, I connected to our pristine archive to retrieve the original, untouched files.  That's when I noticed that the files in the local, Working Scratch, folder were about 2 gig bigger than the original files in the Pristine Archive for the cameras that *had* conformed properly.  Clearly Adobe is storing something in there somewhere but Apple, in their infinite wisdom, has determined that I don't need to know what is it or where it's been put!  Help!  If I could find the files I could trash them locally and re-conform.  Thank goodness for the Pristine Archive and I *always* put stuff there before I start to edit but... um... other folks don't.
    Where does Adobe store the 2 gig of conforming info and why won't Apple let me see it?

  • ENCORE CS5.5: Audio Conforming Is Eating Up My Hard Drive

    Hi guys. I am using Adobe Encore CS5.5 (Windows 7) for a DVD project. My project is pretty much a series of audio files synch with .PSD images. In other words, I do not use real video. Rather, I Use Images wity audio running in the bagground of the timelines.
    Encore keeps conforming (non-stop) the audio files of my project, and it's eating up my hard drive space at lightning speed, say 537GB of free space in like 30 mins or so.
    After much research, I found that the Media Cache Files Folder is being loaded with replicas of my audio files with the following extensions .ac3 48000.cfa and .ac3 48000.pek
    I use seperate hard drives for both my C: drive (for software) and D: (for my project files files). As I stated above, I have plenty of room in my C drive, but Encore keeps eating up the free space, this, of course, while I have my project running.
    I resaved the project with a different name. I even re-installed Encore, and the result is the same: Audio keeps conforming and the Media Cache Folder is loaded. When I empty this folder, I get my HD space back, but the process keeps on going. For those who do not know, the Media Cache Folder can be accessed in Encore from Edit--> Preferences-->General -->Media: Media Cache Files --> Browse or directly from C:/Users/Username/AppData/Roaming/Adobe/Common/Media Files, where "Username" is your Computer's User Account name.
    This is by Far the most annoying software glitch I have ever seen in my life. I am so frustrated. My project is quite complex and I don't want to start all over again.  Any help or insight will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks for your reply.
    I have 6 timelines. The total program length, as shown in the build tab, is about 3GB used. And it's a DVD project, not BD.
    I use MP3 files and I can see the audio keeps conforming from the Progress tab. There's a Stop button,but it's grayed out, so I can't stop it. The setting I am using to transcode is a3c as you mentioned.
    The funny thing is that I even deleted the project's audio files from the timelines and Project Assets as well. At this point the audio files don't even exist in my project, and yet the Progress tab shows the audio keeps conforming and my hard drive keeps being swallowed by this monster. That's driving me Nuts!
    Originally, and of course, the audio was Untranscoded. I performed the transcoding and yes, PSD images are brought directly as asssets into Encore. I probably should have done this from Premiere, but a) I have never used Premiere, and b) I was just learning how to use Encore by watching some video tutorials.
    The thing is that my project was complete and everything was set, including audio conforming. I even outputed a disk image, which I then burned into a DVD. At the time I did this my project was still somewhat small as I just wanted to test the whole process with just a few files. The thing is that at this point I didn't realize what was happening in the background with my hard drive's free space until I later got a Windows warning message of low disk space. And that's when the saga began for me.
    Once again, thanks for your help.

  • Audio conforming failed check media cache preferences

    I took my computer home from work to do some work over the weekend. yay.
    When I launch AE cs3 it says "audio conforming failed check media cache preferences"
    I go into preferences to try and change the location, but cannot as the network paths are not there, as I am at home, not at work on the network.
    The browse folder dialog does not let me browse to a new location. it is blank.
    So I am using up the time I don't have trying to fix this! Any help or advice appreciated.

    I recommend you check your network settings. You should create different network environments for home and office use. It seems Vista in your case is applying rules and limitations from your work to your home environment and thus UAC prevents you from doing anything. Simply disable/ delete any network connections and have Windows re-instate them. Also try to trash the AE prefs and manually delete all files in the media cache (Users/Lloyd/Documents/Adobe). naturally also check whether your user account has sufficient priviliges and permissions. Make sure to at least run as "Power User" or otherwise you may not be allowed to create new folders or initiate other system operations.

  • Audio Conforming messing up audio

    So this is the second time this has happened. I start editing a file, cutting up clips, even exporting a few files and everything looks good. I take a short break, five maybe ten minutes, I come back and I play the source file and there's no audio. I look just below the timeline and it says "audio conforming." Ok, so I wait a couple of minutes until it's done. Well now the audio on the original file is out of synch. It skips around. I've tried rebooting and starting the project over, but it's still messed up. Any ideas?

    Delete the cache files, then reopen the project so PP can rebuild them.

    After effects warning: Audio conforming failed for thefollowing file:___________.cfa. Perhaps due to disk space.
    I am working on a project for an internship and I am editing a video I had the video files working and then I started doing some editing and animations for the video  and now for some reason when I open the file into AE I get this message so I tried starting over same message when I import the video files.

    I had this problem after converting some MPG's to avi's... the resulting filenames were 'foo.MPG.avi' ... the error message only seemed to indicate it was foo.MPG, so AE thought it was a MPG container type by parsing wrong, when it wasnt. i renamed all my files to just the avi, like 'foo.avi' and then imported into AE and it worked, no errors.

  • Sending Premiere Pro sequence to Pro Tools for automatic audio conforming

    I’m looking to implement an online-offline workflow at my production company, and I’m trying to figure out if it’s feasible to send a sequence from Premiere Pro to Pro Tools with enough metadata to take advantage of Pro Tools’ automatic conforming feature.
    Premiere Pro or Audition doesn't seem to have any kind of feature like this, so I’m turning to Pro Tools. Here’s a demonstration of the feature from Avid: http://youtu.be/Gz9e9LuIdXU
    For color grading, we’re already sending XML from Premiere Pro into DaVinci Resolve, and DaVinci Resolve perfectly automatically conforms the offline proxies to online high-quality clips suitable for grading. I’m trying to accomplish the same thing with the audio clips to prepare a sequence for sound mixing. The offline proxies in a sequence contain only compressed stereo tracks, but online audio clips have all of the separate uncompressed tracks for each microphone.
    My initial thought was that, before any offline editing occurs, I might, in the Premiere Pro Metadata panel, add the names of the sound rolls to all the offline proxies in the “Tape Name” field.
    I’m wondering if that metadata for those clips in the Premiere Pro Project Panel are included in an EDL that would be exported out of Premiere Pro, so that Pro Tools would know how to correctly choose online audio clips.
    I know EDLs contain timecode, and that seems like it would be sufficient for Pro Tools, if production only occurred within one day. However, if there are audio clips recorded on different days, at the same time of day, some audio clips in a sequence would have identical timecode, and Pro Tools wouldn’t know which clip to automatically conform. It seems like Pro Tools would choose which clip to conform by first looking at timecode, and then if there were multiple clips with the same timecode, it would resolve the conflict by identifying the specific sound roll. This is why it seems important to have the sound roll metadata included in the EDL out of Premiere Pro.
    EdiLoad looks like software that might be able to batch update sound roll metadata for an EDL already exported out of Premiere, but I’m not sure.
    http://www.soundsinsync.com/products/ediload
    Manually going through Pro Tools and assigning correct sound rolls in a picture-locked cut wouldn’t really be an improvement over manually conforming. If I have to go through a cut and locate online audio clips, I might as well just conform manually.
    So my questions are:
    When exporting an EDL out of Premiere, does the EDL include “Tape Name” metadata for Pro Tools to read as a sound roll? If not, is there another format I could use that would make this round-trip feasible?
    If not, does anyone have experience with EdiLoad? Would EdiLoad work to do what I'm trying to do?
    Is there any other way to accomplish automatic conforming, or something else that I'm missing?

    See if this helps.
    FAQ: Why are some codecs and sequence presets missing from my installation of Premiere Pro?

  • Keeping high audio quality, despite Pr Pro Audio Conforming

    I'm working on a film project, which will be edited in Premiere Pro.  I am recording most of the audio at 24/96 .wav files.  There will however be some audio files recorded at 16/48 compressed, coming from different sources.  This is unfortunately unavoidable.  SO, upon digging in the Adobe help sections, I found that if I start my project and set the sequence settings for audio to a sample rate of 96 (or 96,000), Prem Pro WILL NOT CONFORM my 24/96 .wav files.  (Pr Pro will not conform uncompressed audio of a supported format if it is brought into a sequnce where the sample rate of the sequence is the same as the clip.) This is great.  My 24/96 files will hold their quality all the way through the process.  It will however conform the other files such as the 16/48 compressed files.
    So here's my question.  (Keep in mind that my final product will be exported to 24/96.) I can take all my 16/48 audio files and convert them to uncompressed 24/96 before bringing into Prem Pro and then Prem Pro won't conform them at all.  So what will yield the best audio quality - a 16/48 audio file that has been conformed by Prem Pro and then during the export done by Prem Pro converted to 24/96, or will the audio quality be higher if I convert that 16/48 audio file first to 24/96 and then bring it into Prem Pro, where it won't be conformed by Prem Pro at all?  In other words, for best audio quality, do I let Prem Pro conform my 16/48 files and then convert them to 24/96 during export, or do I do the 16/48 converstion to 24/96 in another program like Audition?
    (((And yes, the higher audio quality matters.)))
    Thank you

    Thank you
    If these files are .wav files then they aren't compressed just a lower sample rate and bit depth. There shouldn't be any difference in quality between the Premiere up converted or the Audition up converted files, although I would trust Audition a bit more than Premiere to do an accurate conversion.
    Not really sure why you need to work at 96K, it just uses more resources but it is worth keeping the sored files as at least 24bit. Since Audition works at 32bit floating point bit depth as it's native format it may be that your saved files from Audition are 32bit and that is what Premiere is choking on.

  • Is there any way to change audio conforming in preferences?

    Hi
    I am uploading about 4 hours worth of footage for a new project to CS5 Premier Pro, and have found that I can only capture in 10 minute segments as when I capture anything longer due to capture/conform back up that inevitably occurs eventually PP decides that its not responding.
    Does anyone else experience this & is there some way I can turn off the conforming while I am capturing & then capture the whole project at once, like overnight while I am sleeping?
    thanks
    Mandi

    Mandy,
    As Harm points out, Conforming is necessary. What is happening is that the Audio is converted to 32-bit floating-point for accurate editing, and then the PEK (Waveform Display) file is created. You end up with a CFA and a PEK for each Audio Clip, and these will be located where you directed your Scratch Disks (files).
    I can only capture in 10 minute segments as when I capture anything longer due to capture/conform back up that inevitably occurs eventually PP decides that its not responding.
    This is an odd problem, and I think that Harm is correct, that you have an outside issue, causing this. Now, when you say "capture," you do mean "Capture" as from a miniDV tape camera over FireWire using the Capture module in PrPro, don't you? If you are not doing Capture that way, then you are Importing the files. If the latter is the process that you are using, can you give us the full details of those files?
    If the former, Capture, that should be in accordance with the Sequence's Capture settings.
    Good luck,

  • Why audio sounds different in the Mountain Lion over 10.6

    Hi
    I just upgraded my system OS 10.6.8 to the latest 10.8.4, and I found that audio on the 10.8.4 sounds different.
    I did some tests and I can say that audio when listening on the 10.8.4 has less bass content and the hi-mids are more agressive.
    I running the audio studio on my Mac Pro and this was a big dissapointment for me.
    Also I rendered audio file from Logic Pro 9 on the both system and they are the same, but when you listening on the 10.6.8 it sounds correct while on 10.8.4 sounds different. I have the same audio drivers from RME Fireface 800 on both systems. In tests I used identical Logic arrangement file on both systems.
    I just don't like the sound on the new system at all. It is worse than it was on the 10.6.8.
    I switched to the Snow Leopard again and I regret that I puchased your latest OS. Why it is done? Apple?

  • Seriously...Now I have to figure out why audio doesn't match video

    Good grief, come on!!
    I shot the video with a brand new HD canon.  I imported the video and it plays fine in the program manager (audio in synch).  However, after exporting (h.264) audio is out of wack by a few frames.
    I refuse to shell out $40 for support when I shelled out $1500 for this suite.  Yes, I tried to read all of the threads but quickly get buried.  I just want to export.
    Right clicking on the audio time line says (Source Audio 48000 - compressed stereo) and (Project Audio 48000 32 bit floating point stereo).

  • Peak files and audio conforming does not automatically happen unless I restart premiere

    Am I the only one that this is happening to? Ever since I updated to version 8. Peak files and conforming doesn't happen unless I restart Premiere.
    Here's also another question. If there is a preference for "automatic peak file generation" then how do I manually generate a peak file and force conforming?
    obviously, yes automatically generate a peak file. OK not automatically doing it, let me do it manually without having to restart the whole program.

    I am having the same issue. In addition to the peak files not automatically generating unless I restart Premiere, Not all of the Media Cache Files go into the custom directory I specify.

    hello;
    I am importing an .avi into AE cs4 and then I get this error;
    I have not had this error before;
    any thoughts,
    thanks;

    so, my .avi is coming from a digital camera, manufacturer: Praktica;
    the .avi does not seem to work in any of my adobe products: AE, premier, media encoder;
    well, I downloaded virtualdub, and imported my .avi into it, and simply chose File/SaveAsAVI, which gave me a new .avi which is effectively a copy of the original;
    I imported the copy.avi into AE and it seems to work fine;
    I am not a video person, so it is really not practical for me to attempt to discover the reasons why Praktica's .avi's are not working in AE, etc; so I will settle on the videodub workflow;
    thanks for your time,

  • Why audio books are not coming into itunes

    generally I download 2 books a month from audible.com, after download from audible site, they pop into  itunes and i transfer them to an ipod. Even though audible show them as downloaded and my mac download window shows them as downloaded, they are not in itunes nor if i use search can i find them on my computer, Anyone have a suggestion for obtaining the books in the usual manner.   thanks  joanlvh

    These are user-to-user forums, you are not talking to Apple here.
    Audiobooks (and ringtones) are currently a one-time only download. I believe that they are all supplied to Apple by audible.com, so I assume that it's them who are requiring the one-time only download restriction. To get it onto your other devices you will need to sync it via a computer. Depending upon what country that you are in, Audible.com have their own app (Audiobooks from Audible) so you might be able to buy direct from them, though I don't know whether you can buy within their app or download audiobooks directly from them within the app e.g. whether they need to be copied via a computer.

  • Why does Premiere Elements 11 continually "conform" my audio?

    I have a Hauppauge TV tuner in my computer that allows me to record TV shows off air.  I have not had a problem with creating projects using shows recorded from cable, but when I attempt to use a show recorded from an antenna, the video clips in continuous "conforming audio" mode.  The Hauppauge software writes the output file as a .ts file.  Gspot gives no information on the audio codec used.  However, the software includes an mpeg transcoder.  Gspot reports a six-channel AC3 audio track.  When I add either the .ts or .mpg file to the project, audio plays just fine, although the "conforming" progress bar is displayed as soon as I attempt to playback the clip.  Playback is normal until I stop playback and restart, then no audio.  I can still see the audio tracks with varying amplitude, just no sound.  After the progress bar hits 100% and disappears, I can play the clip with audio, but as soon as I do, the "conforming audio" progress bar reappears and the same thing happens all over again.  I have confirmed that the cache folder is updated.  When I retry the import, I delete the cache files before importing the clip.  The same behavior occurs if I rename the .ts file with .mts or .m2ts.  I don't understand the conforming thing, because everything I've read on it says it is only done once.  This only happens on recordings with the antenna as the signal source.  Can anyone explain what is happening, or steps I can use to troubleshoot the problem?
    TIA

    ATR,
    Yes, that would explain why the Conforming happens again, but this line troubled me:
    I can play the clip with audio, but as soon as I do, the "conforming audio" progress bar reappears and the same thing happens all over again.
    If that is AFTER the CFA (and possibly the PEK) files HAVE been Deleted, then they WILL be recreated.
    Now, some have experienced a Conforming "loop," but that is most often due to the Media Cache not being available, say with a Mapped Network Drive, or perhaps an external, which is assigned a new drive letter (remember, the link to the CFA & PEK files is an absolute Path).
    With the answers to the various, above questions, and especially the timing of the Deletion of the CFA files, and the re-Conforming operation, we shall know.
