Why blank sheets in Time Machine display

In the example above, TM's display has 5 blank sheets, as shown arrowed in green, and one at theback. What do they mean? (I don't think they appeared in Mavericks.)
Do the red spots appear only on sheets which include document files which have changed since the last backup? If so, that implies that the blank sheets display backups that have no changed files since the last backup. (Each blank sheet is coupled to its own backup file in TM's folder.) If so, what is the point of displaying these blank sheets?
Thanks.
iMac 2011, Yosemite 10.10.1

Looks like you only have one back up file, the blank files will fill in as time goes on.  With every back up a blank will be filled.  To prove this run another back up and then check to see if another blank document is filled in.

  • Why do I get "Time Machine completed a verification of your backups on..."

Any idea why I keep getting 'Time Machine completed a verification of your backups on “MyBookLiveDuo”. To improve reliability, Time Machine must create a new backup for you." ?  It's just started happening.  Running 10.8.2 on two laptops.  One is fine backing up the other keeps showing this error.  Both versions of the OS are identical.  Same wireless network, same Raid back-up, same tiem zone etc.  Any ideas?  It takes hours to wipe and start again, and really defeats the idea of Time Machine.

The disk images on which the backup data is stored are being corrupted. Backing up to a network device other than a Time Capsule or a Mac is unsupported by Apple. You're completely dependent on the device vendor if something goes wrong, and the vendor will blame Apple.
I suggest you start backing up to a locally-attached external hard drive, preferably more than one, or to a supported network device. If you don't want to do that, use a backup tool other than Time Machine.

  • Blank Mailbox But Time Machine Sees Them

Yesterday I tried to rebuild a mailbox but my iMac crashed almost immediately.
After re-starting, the mailbox I was trying to re-build was now empty.  I loaded up Time Machine with Mail open, and Time Machine displayed the e-mails even on the current setting, as if there was nothing wrong.
To be safe, I navigated back to the previous day and hit restore.  Nothing happened.  The mailbox is still empty.
I then tried manually navigating to the ~library/mail/v2 folder on Time Machine and manually copying the folder over for that mailbox.  This still didn't work.  I can't seem to see the mail in the folder though either.
What has happened to all my mail??

Help! I have the same issue, and renaming the disk is not helping. I renamed to to "TCDisk" (without the quotes of course) and it still does not work. Same problem occurs. The disk is renamed in Time Machine Preferences, but I still cannot select it. I enter my password once, and it turns TM off, and I enter it again and the slider stays "on" but the disk is not selected, and the "choose disk" option is still available. Also, the other computers on my network can select the drive as their Time Machine backup location. Only mine is not able to. I configured the TC through my machine, if that makes a difference. Do I need to change some other settings or what? Please help me out. Thanks a lot in advance.

  • Why is Time Machine displaying files only in the present not the past?

    Hi,
My PowerBook G4 recently had its Logic Board replaced. Since Time Machine identifies the machine to backup thanks to its MAC Ethernet address and, since after a Logic Board switch my MAC Ethernet address had changed, I had to reconfigure TM so that the external hard drive reassociates with the new MAC Ethernet address and continues to backup in the same backup folder. For that I used this hint posted on MacOSXhints.com :
    http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20080128003716101&query=time%2Bmach ine%2Blogic
While performing this hint enabled me to have my new backups in the original backup folder, and access all my backups through finder, I cannot view any backups in Time Machine star-field mode. Whenever I click on "Enter Time Machine" I correctly warp into the star-field, but I only see the present. I cannot go back in time and the time line on the side doesn't show any dates in the past. The finder window at the front displays only what is currently on my PowerBook HDD, and the finder windows that precede it are all dark grey, empty and un-clickable. What is peculiar is that when I click on Time Machine Preferences, the Panel can show the date of the oldest backup.
To sum up: Time machine has no problem backing up my files in the original backup folder of my external HDD (I can see all my new backups in the same backup database folder as the ones before the Logic board switch), I can access all my backed up files via Finder, but when I enter Time Machine star-field mode, it doesn't show me any of my backups. I really like the ease of use of the star-field mode, and I find it frustrating to have to look at my backups in plain old Finder.
What I don't know is whether hint I described above might have introduced errors that provoked the error or whether this might be due to the fact that while my computer was going for repair, I connected the external HDD containing my backup with two computers running Mac OS X 10.4 to retrieve some backed up files.
My case must probably be quite rare, but since I haven't found any solutions to this date, I'm posting it now.
I would be extremely grateful if anyone had a solution for this, or an intuition on the different parameters to modify to correct this Time Machine problem. Any contribution will be helpful. Thank you very much.

    gbullman,
You say that the logic board was replaced? Then you will not be able to continue backups to the SAME backup set.
*_Time Machine Always Performs a Full Backup After a Full Restore_*
Actually, this is normal. Anytime your hardware has changed, or you have reinstalled the operating system again, Time Machine will perform a new full backup.
    *Full Backup After Restore*
Bear in mind that in all cases Time Machine will perform a full backup after a full restore. This is normal. Time Machine will resume incremental backups after the full backup has completed. To view previous backups, Control-click or right-click the Time Machine icon in your Dock or Option-click the Time Machine menu extra and Choose "Browse Other Time Machine Disks," then select your previous backup volume. You will enter Time Machine and be able to browse your previous back ups and restore files. [http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1338]
So even on unchanged hardware, if you reinstall your system software and restore your user data, Time Machine starts anew, and you will not be able to resume backing up with the same history as the previous backups.
While there may be ways to fool/hack Time Machine into recognizing previous backups without performing another full backup, they are likely rather elaborate. Ultimately, though, in a couple of months, all the effort to preserve old backups may seem pointless. After all, Time Machine will eventually purge away that data anyways as it replaces it with new files.
It may simply be easier to begin a fresh series of backups while saving the previous backups until your satisfied that you have enough history built up. Then delete the old backups.
    *Why Can’t I Resume Backups?*
You see, Time Machine was designed to restore your Macs’ immediate environment in case of system crashes or accidental deletion of user files. As a result, reinstalling your Mac OS system software or changing your hardware requires a fresh set of backups since older backups would not accurately represent the current state of your Mac.
Additionally, if a user has had to reinstall the system software, then resuming backups to the same set could later reintroduce the very issues that forced the reinstall in the first place. Furthermore, maintaining backups that were started with an older Mac, introduces the possibility of restoring system files that were never intended for the new Mac.
If you require long-term archival storage of files, then you need another backup strategy.
    Hope this clarifies some things.
    Cheers!

  • Why does power nap time machine backup not work on my August 2012 macbook pro retina?

Hello. I got a MacBook Pro with retina display in August of this year 2012. I have done the SMC ? firmware update and I have 10.8.2 installed on my machine. Power nap still doesn't seem to work. I have the button in energy saver preferences and I have clicked it so it looks like power nap should work. When I am running Time Machine backup with the time capsule and I close the lid (plugged into power) it appears that no progress is made when I reopen the lid. I have closed the lid with activity monitor running and with network displayed. When I reopen the lid it may take up to one minutes to come out of sleep. When it does come out  of sleep I can see that there has been no network traffic.  Eventually, time machine backup resumes and I can see several megabytes per second. When I closed the lid overnight, just to make sure backup didn't restart after lid closing, I saw that no progress had been made in backup when I reopened the lid.
What options are left if I already have 10.8.2 and I have done the required firmware?  One person has mentioned a clean install but I really don't like to have to reenter all the different passwords and all the different preferences again unless that's absolutely necessary. Are there any other options left to try before a clean install?
One other bit of information.  I have filevault turned on; however, it looks like others have a working power nap even with file vault enabled.  If this is not an option, the power nap button should be grayed out when the machine is in filevault.
    Thank you for any help.

Yeah I still have the same problem BTW; it still does not work.
The second I open the lid and take it out of sleep mode, it starts to backup automagically, but when it's sleeping EVEN when it's connected to AC power, TM backups do NOT work to my OS X Server.
I don't understand what the problem is here.
I didn't before but I do have FileVault turned on now -- should that make a difference?
In either situation it didn't work, but now that I think about it, I could understand why it wouldn't backup while asleep.  Apparently the encrypted volume will stay encrypted during sleep and even at the lock screen; it's not until you open the lid and log in from the lock screen that it will unlock the encrypted boot volume.
But even still, I did *not* have FV turned on before, and this still did not work.
Is there some third party solution that can do what I want this to do?
    Here's my use case:
1.) I have a mac mini at home that I use when I'm at home; it runs OS X server.app (bought and paid for) and has TM server turned on.
2.) I have a laptop that I mainly use at work and I don't use at all when I come home (ie. when I'm ready to head home for the day I close the lid and don't open it until I'm back at work the next day, but the laptop does come home with me every day).
What I want to have happen is this:
1.) The minute my laptop enters my home wifi lan (even though it's still asleep with lid closed) I want it to automatically backup the boot drive.
I thought that's what Power Nap was supposed to do, but then I found out that in order for this to work, you have to be connected to AC power; so then I tried that -- ie. every day I come home, I put my laptop in a docking station that has AC power, but TM backups while lid closed / sleeping STILL do not occur!
Thanks for your help everyone...Looking forward to a solution that works.
    EDIT:
    I found this thread:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4158709
"It looks like Power Nap doesn't perform Time Capsule backups when the MacBook Air screen is closed."
So apparently that is yet *another* requirement to get powernap working.  The lid can not be closed.
What is the difference between sleep with lid open and sleep with lid closed!?

  • Why does ext HDD / time machine run slow?

Apologies if this is answered else where, but I can't find any answers.
I have a MBP running OSX 10.6.8. Connected to it as a Time Machine is a Freecom 400GB 28147 uk, external hardrive connected over USB 2.0. I also have a Mac Mini running 10.6.8.
When connected to my MBP, I have found that it is extremely slow to read files. I gave up using it for Time Machine a while ago as I thought there was a problem Time Machine software causing it to run slow. I have also tried to read the time machine backups through finder and they are still slow to read.
Today (don't know why i didn't do it before now) I plugged it in to my Mac Mini with USB 2.0 and found that I can read all the time machine files at lightning speed, far quicker than my MBP which can take 2-3 mins to open a folder. I have noticed that the hard drive doesn't make its usual whurring noise when im trying to open a folder using the MBP, right up until the last minute before the folder opens.
Does any one have any idea about what might be causing the problem when the the ext HDD is connected to my MBP?
Any thoughts or suggestions greatly appreciated.

How are you connected to it? Network problems could explain at least some of what you're seeing.
More often then not I don't know how long the backups take because when it becomes to annoying I stop the backup.
That guarantees that Time Machine will have to do a "deep scan" the next time, comparing everything on your system to the backups.   That does take a while, but if there are no other problems shouldn't have a major impact on performance.
All of that said, I can't say for certain that there isn't something else going on.  Generally the way I notice the slowdown is when my keyboard inputs come out screwy -- ingB instead of Bring, pplAication for Applicaton for example.  When I know that this is happening I can work "around" it by typing the first letter, pausing for a second or two, then typing the remander.  Does any of this ring an bells?
I've not heard of that specifically, but if you're connected to the Drobo wirelessly, and using a Bluetooth keyboard, there are reports of interference between the two. Try a wired keyboard temporarily, and/or different WIFI channels.

  • Why do I have time machine disk problem after closing and later reopening clamshell.

I consistently see the following after closing and later reopening my Macbook Pro (5,1). I have to unplug and replug my Time Machine USB drive.
The only thing new is Mountain Lion. The Time Machine disk has 229 GB free of 1.5 TB. I never had to unplug this drive under Lion.
Does anyone have any idea what is going on? I ran disc repair on Time Machine Drive yesterday, but it found nothing.
    Here is what I see:
(Window 1)The disk was not properly ejected. if possiblem always eject .....
(Window 2)The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer.

I don't think you quite understand how Time Machine really works. But then hardly anyone does. Time Machine is intended to be left enabled always whether a backup drive is connected or not. What Time Machine cannot handle properly is a situation where the backup drive loses power for whatever reason. Time Machine treats this, as does the OS, as an improper disconnect of an external drive without being properly ejected. This in turn throws Time Machine a little bit of a loop.
For you I would suggest not using Time Machine. Instead use a third-party backup utility that you can either schedule or run manually as you wish. They will work with the same drive you have used for Time Machine, but you will need to first erase the Time Machine drive using Disk Utility. Please DO NOT try dragging the Time Machine backups to the Trash.
Here are some good backup utilities you can try:
    Suggested Backup Software
      1. Carbon Copy Cloner
      2. Get Backup
      3. Deja Vu
      4. SuperDuper!
      5. Synk Pro
      6. Tri-Backup
Others may be found at MacUpdate. Each one can be used for a trial period. No need to pay for one until you've decided on which one you like best. I, for example, use Carbon Copy Cloner but please don't take that as a recommendation over the others. It's just my preference. All can be operated manually or can be set up to backup on a schedule you determine. Some can even be set up to backup as soon as the backup drive is connected.
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore.  Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files.

  • Time Machine Displays Wrong Date of Backup

My computer shows the correct date of November 9, 2008, but the Time Machine Backup displays September 14. Can this be fixed?

Actually, this does not need to be "Fixed". You are probably seeing the date the backup files were first created. Was that the date of your first backup? That is OK, +DO NOT+ change anything on the backup drive directly. If you need to delete/modify files that have been backed up, do so through the Time Machine "time travel" interface.
If you click the Time Machine Dock icon (round green clock icon), you will enter the Time Machine interface and see all the backups that have taken place since you began.
    Cheers!

  • Time Machine Display Elements Missing

I have a 30 inch Cinema Display running on a PowerMac G5 and when I display the time machine window the bar that should be between the Cancel and Restore buttons is missing.
    See: http://www.tennes.com/TimeMachine.jpg
This is an "Erase and Install" installation of Leopard. I've created a new Test User that exhibits the same problem. I think Apple forgot to include this image for the 30" inch display. Same computer with 23" Display doesn't have the problem. Neither does MacBook Pro.
Other than this minor glitch, Time Machine is just downright awesome!

This issue is related to the graphics bug in Leopard on G5 with ATI Radeon (9650, etc.) graphics cards and 30" Cinema HD Displays. See these other discussions:

  • Time-Machine Display Disparities

Curious: I set up a Time-Machine backup for the G4 Powerbook, on a partition of a 500gig La Cie Drive. Now, if the Powerbook is connected, the drive turned on, and I click on the Time-Machine icon in the dock, I get what I guess one should expect: a jazzy sci-fi-ish graphic display showing the previous backups regressing back to the virtual big-bang.
    All well and good.
But I set up a similar backup from the (finicky of late)G5 20" iMac, on a different partition of that same drive. When all is hooked up and on, and I click on that Time Machine Dock icon, I DON'T open the Time-Machine environment. All's I get are a stack of two Finder Windows for the "Desktop". They look identical, and just show the files actually on the desktop. And they take a long time to close, too.
What gives? I can't see any very complex series of Preferences to set, so I can't see how the iMac could differ in setup from the Powerbook.
    Owen

    Hello,
Sorry, not an answer, just a post to say I see what occurs to you since I've seen it last hour on a server I've just setup last week. The computer is a MacPro Octo, use 4 X 1Tb drives, run MacOS X serveur V 10.5.6 and is headless (perhaps the cause ?)
Didn't notice it before, but today, while teaching the local admin how to use the news services, I had to make a time machine demo, and then I saw that when I try to enter Time Machine, I obtain only the 2 windows described before, no time machine interface, and of course impossible to restore any file by this way !!
Additionaly, I saw that the background isn't the one selected (the original one for Leopard Server: Aurora Blue) but a full light blue backgroung, whatever is selected as background picture, the result is the same. Noticed too that create another session give good background but no time machine interface, and swiching back to original account make the background OK until next reboot ...
oh ! I see all of this things using remote desktop ... No trouble of this king on my own MacPro server.
I'd be great of any advice to try to fix this trouble, don't really had time to make all the work to setup the server again !!
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards
    Fred

  • Why is iCloud drive Time Machine backup locked?

While it works flawlessly on my Macbook Air, Time Machine appears to be locked on my MBP when I try to recover past icloud Drive backup such as a Pages document. Time M machine opens and lets me go back in time for any other folder, but not for iCloud Drive that remains sort of "frozen", although my backups go back more than one year. Is there a way to understand why this would not work on one laptop while it is on the other, having exactly the same identical specifications? Thank you in advance for your help!

It looks like it tries to start loading safe mode and the loading bar appears under the spinning lines under the apple but then the bar gets almost half full and just dissapears. I'm left with just that grey apple screen and the spinning lines again.
The only other startup option that seemed to get me somewhere other than the grey screen is when I hold the "option" key and choose from the hard drive or the dvd drive to boot.  I can run from the dvd OS X disk that I made.  Is there anything I can do there?

  • Time Machine Display

My time machine backs up but does not display or allow access to previous backups on the Star Wars Display.
I know that it has backed up because of the files on my Time Machine External HD. Please help

If you click on the Time Machine Icon it should bring up a window that shows your Time Machine disk. Then click on that disk and it should take you to another screen which shows the files backed up on the disk.
If the Time Machine Icon is not in your dock, I'd put it there.

  • Time Machine displays wrong 'Mounted At' Name for TC

I made my Time Capsule the primary router in my home network and imported the config file from the Airport Extreme to speed the setup but now Time Machine shows the 'Mounted At' name as "<NetworkName>AirportExtreme" as opposed "<NetworkName>TC" (see below).  I can't seem to change the 'Mounted At' Name displayed in the Time Machine Preferences display.  Any suggestions?

    The configuration file is xml..
So you can edit the name.. directly .. save the file and import it.. it isn't a great way to do things but I have tricked stuff before like that..
But in this situation it is still a different product.. if it was from one TC to another I would say go ahead.. or one extreme to another .. sure.. but you are using an identical configuration .. for two non-identical products.
    syDN ..
That maybe the name which is listed in a local DNS table in the TC.
In mine it has the TC name.
    <key>syDN</key>
              <string>Tardis4</string>
... Changing it has what effect. I don't know.. you can try.. change it and see what happens.. but that is still working around the idea that a factory reset and redo of the setup maybe faster and will surely be better.

Find out by opening the status on the airport utility summary page when you highlight the TC. There is no way of figuring it out except via the utility. What does it list is the problem.
