Why can I no longer mount shares over AFP?

Pre-Mavericks, I had two MBP's backing up to an iMac with a 2TB shared USB drive. It worked flawlessly.
Then, after all machines were upgraded, this stopped (I know shares now prefer SMB2, and TM only uses AFP - seems a little counter-intuitive. I have a 2TB disk, and I'm not going to go spend another 400 GBP on one that has an Apple logo).
Shortly after the Mavericks upgrade, I could open Safari OR use "Connect to server..." in Finder and type in: afp://iMac.local and mount the share fine (automation removed, tyvm - but it still functioned).
For the past 6 - 8 weeks, however, that no longer works either, nor does mount_afp. I get chronic 1069 errors no matter what I try.
I even have old entries where via Browse the paths were "afp://iMac._afpovertcp._tcp.local", but now selecting this only results in a timeout.
If I select either "smb://iMac._smb._tcp.local", or type in "cifs://iMac.local", then I get a list of the avaiable shared file systems, and things work (but OF COURSE, I cannot use TimeMachine for backups).
I even tried fiddling with the "sharing" command to enable AFP only for the Backup share, but lo and behold, even after that, I can only attempt to map with "smb://", and I can only mount the share via SMB (as evidenced by the output of "df"). I thought if SMB weren't available, then my understanding was that Mavericks was supposed to fall back to AFP. I guess not...
It's like there has been a systematic crippling/removal of AFP, which is fine if you fix TimeMachine. I had to RMA the iMac once, and it was incredibly convenient to be able to tell the OS when booting that I wanted to restore from backup. It worked seamlessly. But I don't want to have to disconnect the USB drive and go to each machine individually. I'm really curious how peoples' TimeCapsules still work? OR if everything would still be working fine had I not gone to Mavericks on the iMac.
Does anyone have an explanation? Is it just GONE??

I've got a couple macs that I've been sharing content on for a long time and suddenly I can't see all the volumes on one of the computers. Computer A connects to Computer B via afp. I log in as Admin user and I used to be able to see the 2 internal hard drives but now when I connect, I only see the system drive and my user folder. I need to be able to connect to the 2 internal hard drives. I've even manually dropped one of the drives in the "shared" folder of sys prefs and it still doesn't show up. Any ideas why?
I've recently checked the "ignore permissions" on this volume check box because I was having all kinds of issues with the shared drive. Could that be it? Why would ignoring permissions keep it from showing as shared?

This is book # 13 and I've not encountered this problem before. I am dragging photos into the sourse pane but they are not imported. I have other books w/ over 700 pics (not all used) but this has only 300+ so far. I've copied the book to a pdf and it looks as if I'll have to redo it unless there's another solution.

Also there are a host of other Cloud services you can use. You do not have to use iCloud at all. Although there ARE over 320+ million iCloud presently active, so it is extremely popular with users.

Apple has removed over 95 features in Pages 5.
It has also introduced multiple file formats that are incompatible with each over as well as everything else, and numerous bugs.
Pages '09 should still be in your Applications/iWork folder.

Since iChat 6 the SMS option in the Menus has disappeared.
However if you add the number to a Buddy List as if it were Screen Name but with the leading +1 (as in +1234567890) it will work over AIM.
It only works to US phones on some Carriers.

You should buy Compressor it never fails. It is a must have. I have given up using this buggy Share function and use Compressor all the time.

That will result in this window:

The new method for getting at the "option" symbols works fine in other places like spotlight, but now even the older "option+letter" doesn't work in most places.

Chrome doesn't support the new accent/diacritics/macron chooser. I'm not sure about other browsers such as Firefox. You can use the old Option+letter combination that Doug suggested. Hopefully updates will solve these little incompatibilities shortly.

There has been a change in where Firefox searches for plugins and the plugins folder in the Firefox program folder is no longer scanned for plugins, so Firefox won't find them anymore if they are installed in the plugins folder instead of the "browser\plugins" folder that Firefox now scans.
You can set the plugins.load_appdir_plugins pref to true on the about:config page to make Firefox scan the "<install>/plugins/" directory for plugins like the WMP plugin (np-mswmp.dll).

You can alternatively move plugins from "<install directory>\plugins\" to "<install directory>\browser\plugins\" (create this folder when missing) to make Firefox find them again.

For some freason, I don't know what, but 2 things are going wrong.

In Firefox 3.5 and later you can no longer click the Tab bar to set focus to it.<br />
You can press Ctrl+K (Mac: Cmd+K) to set focus to the search bar and press the Tab key until the tab bar gets focus.
