Why can I not directly view iPhoto pictures from Finder?

When going into finder/Photos I cannot directly view my IPhoto's images. It displays the icon for iPhoto's to be opened so that the images can be viewed. Is there a way that the photos can be drectly displayed in finder, rather than launching the application?

Yes but...
You can look inside the iPhoto Library easily enough but to what end?
Here's how: Right (or Control-) Click on the Library icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
Now you can see inside. Your original photos, as imported from your camera, will be in the Masters folder (called the Originals folder in some versions).
But here's the thing:  Make no changes of any kind in this folder. Do not move, erase, delete, add or rename anything. If you do you risk significant dataloss
The innards of the iPhoto Library are like the engine of a car. There are no user-serviceable parts there. The inexperienced user will cause damage. The experienced user will not cause damage as s/he won't get involved there.
When you use iPhoto you are saying that you don't want to access your files via the Finder. iPhoto replaces the Finder for anything that you want to do with your photos. It works like this because iPhoto uses lots of virtualisation in its processes -  all non-destructive editors do.
So, why do you want to go in there?
To share a photo with some other app for editing?
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
To share a photo by email/ upload to a website etc?

Basically, if you want to surf your photos via the  Finder then you don't want to use iPhoto.

  • Why can't i access my iPhoto library from my epson application

why can't I access my iphoto library fron my epson aplication

There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:   You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
There's a similar option in Outlook and many, many other apps.  If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running:
For users of 10.6 and later:  You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation  which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu.
Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and 10.5 Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
Show File:  a. On iPhoto 09 and earlier:  Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.    3.b.
b: On iPhoto 11 and later: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Reveal in Finder -> Original. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

  • Can/Could/Why-Can't-We Open a Terminal Window from Finder...

I do a lot of development needing a terminal window but also need to bounce about a lot between file system areas (my machine, our NFS drives in our fleet, etc.).
It'd be nice if we could open a terminal window from Finder. I.e., If I'm in Finder and see that I need to work in the terminal window (be it with IDL*, NCL, gcc, etc) I can do a quick GUI click or keykick or whatever, and be happily dropped into a terminal window in that directory. The alternative for me now is to open Terminal from my doc and dig through the file system to my destination.
Can I do that in Finder? I seem to remember in a past life with (ahem) an certain other "operating system" that just released their "apology" edition, that you could do this from their File Exploder. If not, gee, wouldn't that be nice to add, kids?

Thanks for the help on this!
The Matt's macoshints solution (the first comment by Greg Spence, below) was simple enough and met my requirements very nicely, thanks much. (the script is below)
    tell application "Finder"
    set myWin to window 1
set theWin to (quoted form of POSIX path of (target of myWin as alias))
    tell application "Terminal"
    activate
    tell window 1
do script "cd " & theWin & ";ls -al | more"
    end tell
    end tell
    end tell
It worked on the local mac, my unix nsf drives, and the samba drives to which I am connected.
I also tried the cd-to script but as I use tcsh it was not working for me. Other potential users have apparently cited the problem as well (nice simple icon graphic for the finderbar though).

Open iPhoto and all your photos will appear, if you are looking for the folder of iPhoto is on the sidebar of a finder window called "Pictures" and there's a file called "iPhoto Library", press control and click on the file and choose "show package contents" and look for the photos...

  • HT4623 Why can I not get the iPhoto and iMovie apps for free on my new iPad air

I have an iPhone 5 but just got an iPad air for Christmas. I didn't realize I set my iPad up under another Apple ID until my phone was not syncing with my iPad so I erased all content and reset the device to put them both on the same Apple ID. The problem I'm having now is the apps that are supposed to be free like iPhoto and iMovie are saying I have to pay 4.99 for them how do I fix this problem. Cause I did have them installed when I had it set up under the other Apple ID name :(
    Thank you

As other people don't have this issue it suggests the problem is with your set up, somehow. A detailed explanation of the problem might get you some help.

  • How to view iPhoto pictures from Air on iPad

    Hi all
I have a MacBook Air with lots of pictures sorted in iPhoto. I also have an iPad and aiCloud account. How can I set myself so that I can see the pictures on the Air's hard drive on my iPad? Any help would be welcome.
    Regards, Sam.

    Yes.
So you want to stream to the iPad?
I'd ask that on the iPad forum. There may be apps that will do that for you. iPhoto doesn't offer streaming.

  • Why can I not move files in LR from 1 HDD to another

    Hi there.
    LR 4
I need to move a bunch of pictures located in different sub-folders on Drive C: to my new 2Tb Drive D:
I try to move it in LR via the import function with MOVE. But, they are all greyed out (not selectable) and when I try to move 1-by-1 by right-clicking on a picture, a message is displayed telling me that the picture is already in the catalogue. I know it is already in the catalogue. All I need to do is to move it to another HDD.
How would you do this? I have just thought of deleting all files in the catalogue and import them then, but it just does not feel right.
Your suggestions will be very valueble.

Do you see your new @TB drive D in LR? If yes, create a new folder there as John said. In Grid View on the left side is the folders panel. You create the new folder in the folders panel. Right-click where it says "D:" and select <Create folder inside D:>.
Then still in the folders panel drag-and-drop the folders from your old drive C to the new folder you just created on drive D.
But as John advised make a backup of your catalog first. Go >Edit>Catalog Settings and at the bottom of the General tab select <Every time Lr exits>. Then close Lr and the backup dialog will appear. Choose a location for your backup - maybe your new external drive and create the backup. Lr will close down after that. Re-open Lr and do the move of the folders as described above.
PS: Do NOT use the import function. You said "is it on the right side?" No! that's in the Import dialog. Cancel import and go to Grid View. the folders panel is on the left side there.

  • HT4979 why can I not send email when away from my home wifi? Am able to receive messages OK, and outgoing mailserver is correct?

Why am I unable to send email when away from my home wifi ? I am able to receive mail OK, and have double- checked the outgoing server which is correct. This problem is consistent with my Macbook Pro, iPhone, and iPad2.
Attempts to send messages results in them sitting in the Outbox and never- ending 'sending message' displayed.
I am able to send using my   me.com  server.
    Home service provider is Cogeco.
    Any help would be appreciated.
