Open iPhoto and all your photos will appear, if you are looking for the folder of iPhoto is on the sidebar of a finder window called "Pictures" and there's a file called "iPhoto Library", press control and click on the file and choose "show package contents" and look for the photos...

HELP: Can not open my iPHOTO Library file because previous iPhoto application
                 is no longer available.
What to do? If I need new application, which is the best ?

Have you upgraded iPhoto to the current version (9.5.1)?
Have you failed to allow your previous iPhoto library to be upgraded?
Have you tried holding the "option" key while opening iPhoto to point to your iPhoto library?

I have tried everthing suggested on the forum.

    Did you follow these directions?
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.>Click on the Add Library button,
2 -  select the library you want to add from those in the selection window.
3 - make sure that in the rebuild window the checkbox  "Scavange orphaned photos" is checked.
4 - now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
5 - in the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed. Click on the Create button.
Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note 2:  Your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

  • Why can't I open my iPhoto library on my Mac from my Macbook?

I'm trying to open my Iphoto library on my Mac Mini.  It's on a Thunderbolt drive on the Mini.   It's formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled).   Iphoto is obviously closed on the Mini.  When I try to open the libary from my Macbook Pro, I get the error "Unable to write to library Iphoto Library.  Check that you have permission to write to the library directory.
I believe I do have permission - on the drive permissions are for everyone and me read/write.
Any ideas?   I'd love to be able to open it from 2 macs...

The drive should be formatted as follows:

  • Iphoto will not open my iphoto library

Hello, this is my first question.  I have OS X 10.8.2, iphoto 9.4.1.  When I open iphoto, it asks what library I want to use.  I want to select "other library".  I see an iphoto library 2, but when I click on the open button, nothing happens.  I have tried opening the iphoto library while holding down the control and command keys, but I do not get an option to rebuild the library like was stated on one of the posts here.
    Thanks

If you really cannot get iPhoto to recognize the Photo Library, try to rebuild using iPhoto Library Manager:
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This rcent post by Terence Devlin explains what this will do:

  • I can't import my old iPhoto library into 9.51 HELP!!!

I purchased iphoto 9.51 from the app store but it can't import my old iPhoto Library ..please help as it looks like I've lost all my photos..there seems to be no postings on this topic

First of all - you need to open your old iPhoto Library in iPhoto 9.5.1, not to import it.
Which version of iPhoto created your old library? If it was iPhoto '08, version 7.x.y or earlier, then you need first to run the iPhoto Library Upgrader to prepare the library, see this link:   iPhoto '11: About the Library Upgrader
If it was a more recent version, simply launch iPhoto with the option-key held down and select your old iPhoto library, when prompted, which library to open.
If you have been trying to open iPhoto this way, what happens? Do you get an error message? Which error message exactly?

Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new).  Try each of these in order until the issue is resolved.

  • I can not open my iPhoto Library in iPhoto or Aperture

    Hi,
I am running iPhoto 9.4.3 and Aperture  3.4.5. I first had all my pictures in iPhoto, but swithced to Aperture a few years back, importing my iPhoto library to Aperture, and in the process I moved the library to an external harddrive.
Now I have rebooted my old iMac 2008 (OS X 10.8.5) and am attempting to start using iPhoto again, with the old library, but when I open iPhoto and try to choose which library to use, the only to librarys I can choose from are the new Aperture and iPhoto libraries that come with the program. I can see my old library on the external harddrive, but I can not highlight it. I have tried to open the library in Aperture also, but have the same problem there.
    What am I doing wrong?

Ok, I had a closer look under diskutility... My EHD is showing on 2 lines... the top line says:
3TB WE My Book 1130... Format: Mac OS Extended
    But the lower line says:
    MY BOOK ...Format MS-DOS (FAT)
And when I go into Finder and click "Show info" on MY BOOK, it also says MS-DOS... so I must have done something wrong when I formatted the disk.... Can you help?

  • Photos app did not open my iPhoto library

I searched the forums but didn't find an answer...
I recently upgraded to 10.10.3, looking forward to trying out the Photos app.  My understanding is that on the first launch, Photos should open up the existing iPhoto library.  However, I had my iPhoto library outside of the Home>Pictures folder.  Additionally, while Yosemite was updating, one of my kids plugged in their iOS device, causing iPhoto to open when I previously had it closed.  In any case, when Photos opened, I didn't get a dialogue to use my existing iPhoto library, and there was just a blank library.  I went to Preferences, and there is an area that shows "Library location", but there is not a button for me to select the iPhoto library.  The button just says, "Show in Finder", which brings me to the Finder.
Aside from manually dragging and importing several thousand photos over from iPhoto to Photos, is there a way for me to have Photos use the existing iPhoto library?  Thanks for any help on this!

Doing this does not allow me to select my iPhoto library.  It is greyed out.
And that is good so. Importing a photo library would create a mess of duplicates - thumbnails, previews, faces ...
You do not import a library, you open it.
To switch between libraries hold down the alt/options key ⌥, while you double click the Photos icon to launch it. That will show the library chooser panel.  Just like in iPhoto.
Select your iPhoto Library to open.
Once Photos has upgraded your library open the Photos Preferences and make the new library your System Photo Library.  Only the System Photo Library can use iCloud and id visible in the Media Browser in other apps.
After upgrading the iPhoto Library, you will find it renamed with "migrated" in the filename extension.  And about the same size as the new Photos library. Don't delete the old iPhoto Library, in case you need to repeat the migration, if their should be issues. First test it thoroughly.
The Photos Library is sharing the media files with your iPhoto Library using hard links. so no additional storage is required for the second library.
Photos saves disk space by sharing images with your iPhoto or Aperture libraries - Apple Support

You  could try using the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility to remove all traces of any existing versions of Reader prior to installing the version you want and updating it as required.  This utility is no longer supported by Microsoft because it can conflict with Win 7, but you can still find it in sites like http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459

  • Finder can't open my iPhoto Library folder anymore

I recently installed iLife '08, and can no longer open my iPhoto Library folder and subfolders using Finder. When I try, it automatically launches iPhoto, which severely limits my access to these files. I've looked at the built-in help and on-line help, and haven't found an answer yet. Does it have anything to do with something called a "media browser"?

Welcome to the Apple user discussion forums
Yes - it has a lot to do with media browser
there are many ways to correctly and safely access your photos - using the finder is NOT one of them - it is (and always has been) recommended that you do not enter the iPhoto library directly. click here for a discussion of the ways to safely and correctly access your photos.
