Why can I not open a attachment that has the suffix .mpe?

A friend and I both received an email with an attachment that has the suffix .mpe. When I try to open it I get a message that Quicktime can not open the file- that it is in a format that Quicktime doesn't understand. I wrote both the friend and the sender and they say their machines open the attachment. If I drag the attachment to my desktop and change the suffix to .mpeg I can open the file.
I don't know if it is relevant, but they are both using mountain lion and I am using snow leopard.
Is there a logical explanation for my inability to open the .mpe attachment?

I am hesitant to believe that the reason they can open the file and I can't is because they are running mountain lion and I am not. It would seem to me that Quicktime is Quicktime no matter which operating system one is using, or...?
Incorrect. It's not so much the system itself, but rather the QT structure embedded in the OS together with the different player apps. They are probably running QT X v10.2 (603.6) while you are likely using QT X v10.0 (131) and there have been some major changes between the two during the interim. E.g., try playing "muxed" MPEG-2/AC3 content to see the difference in audio support between OS v10.6.8/QT X v10.0 and OS v10.8.2/QT X v10.2. Another major change was the disabling of legacy codecs—they're probably still enabled on your system but disabled by default on their systems unless they re-enabled them. To say the least, QT is constantly changing and that is why so many people are here trying to find out why something works or doesn't work in one instance but is totally backwards following a certain OS upgrade or app/security update.

Well then, as I wrote in the headline... Why can I not open PDF-files?
I get a notification that says that either the file is already open (which it's not) or it is missing a plug-in thingy for this kind of file.
So, how do I know which plug-in thing I should chose from Adobe which will solve my problem?
Could it be enough just to update the program? I tried with 6.0.6. upgrade but it wouldn't even open up. I'm not so good at this type of computerproblems (choosing upgrades, plug-in etc.). The program is not upgraded for a long time, unless it do it automatically, but I think we've chosen it not to....
Please help!

PDF files are extremely reliable. You may have a software issue. I have the problem on 2 identical systems with the exact same specs. The problem occurs at the same exact interval. It may be a windows update. We have had to re-install software form the DVD in each instance. This fixes it for awhile and then it recoccurs. Adobe acts as if they have never heard of the problem...imagine that. I'm the only one with th problem.
This is happens with CS6 volume lic product.
If you dont own Adobe product it will be even more difficult to find and answer as the reader is used my so many people.
We know we have the problem again when we double click opn a PDF and nothing happens. SOme have reported that reloading does not fix the problem.
Wish I could help you. I am looking for answers to this issue right now and phone support is a 30 minute wait.

OK. You mean that it has fillable form fields. Those will not open in the mail app or in iBooks.
Download Adobe Reader in the App Store. It is free. Then go back to the mail app, tap on the PDF file to get the Open In window to pop up. When the Open In window pops up, select Adobe Reader. The PDF will open in Adobe Reader and be saved in there. You should be able to fill out the fields in the Adobe Reader app and then you can email it from there if needed.

Try these in order - from best option on down...
1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
2. Download <a href="http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/"><b><u>iPhoto Library Manager</b></u></a> and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 08* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

We don't know how to answer because we don't know what you are doing.
I can tell you that you cannot connect the two devices together to transfer content. And videos do not work in Photo Stream, but it does work for photos. However, you can only stream photos to the device after you have enabled photo stream on the iPad. Any photos that were already on the phone - before you turned on Photo Stream -will not sync to the iPad.

I clicked to install a new version after updating and clicking repair. But still the attachments won't open including invoices I have received today. It is all attachments not just pdfs.

I think I figured it out. I set the compatibility mode to Windows Server 2008 (which is the OS on the server we are using) and it opened just fine. Whoop Whoop. Thanks for your help.
