Why can I not place backup folders in another folder on the same hard drive.

Why can I not move the backup contents of a customer into another folder on the same hard drive without it copiying the information over imediately instead of taking hours and having to use password!!!

Because the backups are not "owned" by you, so you can't just move them.
Also, I don't imagine Time Machine will be able to find them if you just move them.

  • Why can't I upload Adobe CS3 on another Mac with the same operating system 10.5.8?

I purchased a MacBook Pro in 2008 and had it installed with Adobe CS3 at the Apple Store. I don't believe I was given any CDs or serial numbers to take home. I still have all the documentation for my other programs I installed myself, like Logic, Final Cut, etc. and those installed fine on my new Mac desktop computer, with the same operating system (10.5.8) as my MacBook. For whatever reason, I don't have the documenation for CS3, but I was able to download a serial number finder and locate the serial number for my version of CS3. But when I enter that serial number into the new computer, Adobe says the serial number is invalid. I thought standard licenses allowed for 2 computers (home/work) per serial number. This is the first computer I've tried to install CS3 on so it seems I should have no problem. Any help here? I'm on a ticking clock because my MacBook could crash any day and I need to get the programs switched over to my new computer. I appreciate any help.
    Thanks,

Why can't I send messages to my friends that have the same thing as me? They can send to me. It says that they aren't registered and they are though.

What phone do you have?  And how, exactly, are you trying to send pictures to Facebook?  It sounds like you need to log into Facebook on the phone or re-enter your username and password for Facebook.  Somehow the connection between your photos and Facebook has been lost, and you need to get them connected again (verify your login information)

Why can't I use my iPad in another location that has same internet service.   Comcast. As me

Presumably, if that house was a wifi network, and you know the wifi networks password so you can connect, you can use it.  Does the homeowner have a secured network?  Have you asked them for the password to connect?

  • IMAC 24" screen went dead. Can I buy a mac compatible monitor and still use the IMAC hard drive?

IMAC 24" screen went dead. Can I buy a mac compatible monitor and still use the IMAC hard drive - which is still working? I took it to the Apple store and they quoted $500+to replace the monitor. No help as usual. Can I buy a MAC compatible monitor ($189) and use it as a primary monitor? Can I set it up if the screen on the IMAC is dead? Any other solutions?

The only negative to not having the original drive will be the work needed to reinstall all the apps and reconfigure to your liking. You will also have to decide whether to stay on Lion (which you should update to 10.7.4, BTW) or bite the bullet and take a leap of faith on Mountain Lion.
In either case, to simplify matters you would do well to concoct a Lion or ML bootable installer on a USB stick. In either case, you need to get the corresponding installer downloaded onto the hard drive and, instead of running it to execute the install, extract the coveted InstallESD.dmg image from which you construct the bootable installer. See here for details: https://discussions.apple.com/message/17782820#17782820  The procedure applies the same to both of the latest cat flavors.

  • Do i need to buy the same hard driver for my iMac or i can buy any hard driver 3.5?

Do i need to buy the same hard driver for my iMac or i can buy any hard driver 3.5?

You can buy any 3'5" SATA hard drive for the iMac. You can buy a hard drive at OWC.
Note that Late 2009 and newer iMacs have the temperature sensor inside the hard drive, so it's important to get one with that sensor. In this case, I recommend you to take your computer to an Apple Store or reseller and get your hard disk replaced

  • Can I use the same hard drive to back up my photos and also do Time Machine backups?

I bought a 1T external hard drive today for my MacBookPro with the intentions of backing up my iPhoto library, and then deleting it to make more space on my hard drive.
I also tried and failed to install Time Capsule because my Verizon modem won't let Time Capsule run with it unless I use Time Capsule as my wireless.
That said, I want to back up my computer, and even though I copied my iPhoto library already, I have plenty of space to do a Time Machine backup as well.
Is this something I can do? Please let me know. After two hours on the phone with Apple only to learn Time Capsule was a waste of money, I'm hoping I don't need to buy another external HD yet…

If you want to use the drive for both TimeMachine and storage, attach the drive and then open Finder > Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.  Choose the new hard drive from the left sidebar, and then in the main panel choose Partition.
Choose the number of partitions to be two.  Click the first partition and change the size if you do not want the default half of the drive.  Name the partition (such as Backups), then accept the default format Mac OS X Extended (Journaled) and the partition table as GUID.  Click Apply and confirm you want to erase the drive.
Then do the same for the second partition, but of course, give it a different name.
    When finished Quit Disk Utility.
Turn ON TimeMachine in System Preferences and direct it to your backup partition.

  • Why can't I add files from my MacBook Pro to my external hard drive?

I re-named my external hard drive on my PC, and now I cannot add files from my Mac to the hard drive. How can I add files again? Do I need to reformat my hard drive?

Since you mention you used the external harddrive with your 'PC', I assume that it was NTFS formatted. By default Mac cannot write to NTFS only read it.
To make sure: go to. Disk Utility (while the drive is mounted), select the drive and look at 'Format'. That should tell you the format type of the drive.
If you are looking for third party solutions, try:
    http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/24481/ntfs-3g
    http://www.paragon-software.com/home/ntfs-mac/
However, know that they are not supported by apple and won't be the best solution. The best cross platform solution would be to reformat the drive with exFat (you can do this through disk utility), just make sure you backup your data before doing this. Both Windows and Mac can write to exFat and it does not have file size limitations as Fat32.

  • Can I back up images in Lightroom to an external hard drive as I'm shooting tethered and sending files to a folder on the internal hard drive?

I'd like to be able to send files to both the internal hard drive and an external hard drive as I'm shooting tethered in Lightroom. Can this be done and if so how? Thanks.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
OS X can only restore data to the drive where Time Machine backed up files from.
If you want to restore files from the Time Machine backup onto an external drive, your only option is to access to the Time Machine drive manually (open a Finder window and choose your Time Machine drive in the Finder sidebar), navigate through its folders and copy the files you want to the external drive

can i back up multiple macs to the same hard drive

Yes, you simply share the drive to the network.. in whatever way that is possible as you have given us no info.. over the network TM will create sparsebundles.. locally it can produce a straight backup ..

  • Can I configure my HP dv7-4165dx to boot from the second hard drive?

I have had an HP dv7-4165dx for about 20 months now. About 10 months in, the original hard drive burned up because of the placement directly under the GPU (bottom left corner, left of the touchpad and below the keys), which gets hot enough on the top side to make your hand uncomfortable. The symptoms included blue screens, troubles on startups, and finally a system message on boot that said the drive was damaged. Since it was under warrantee, I carried it to Best Buy to have the drive replaced, which took nearly 2.5 months.
Now, at about 20 months, I am facing the beginning of the exact same symptoms. I noticed that there was a second hard drive bay, away from the GPU, so I purchased the wire needed to use that bay. Now it tells me that there is no bootable disc installed (the hard disk test, in system diagnostics, knows it is there) . I am sure I can swap the drive back to the original bay and be fine but that puts me out $75 for the kit from HP (yeah, I know I may have to eat that if there is no way), but far more importantly it means that I will have another burned out drive (losing everything, again) within a month or two.
I have looked but I can't seem to find any way to tell it boot from that drive. Is there a way, or am I just out of look due to a poor design? It's been a great machine, except for this issue.
    This question was solved.

    Hi,
Unfortunately there is no option to be able to boot from the HDD in the 2nd bay in any of the dv7 series - sorry for the bad news.

  • Can I install a new SSD on my MBP without the old hard drive?

Here's the scenario. I'm currently in the Philippines leaving for California for college next week. There, I will buy a new SSD (Samsung 830 to be specific). I want to leave my current HDD (the one in my laptop that I'm using right now) here in the Philippines though as my brother here wants to use it. Is there a way for me to install the new SSD without having my old hard drive with me? My macbook pro is an early 2011 15inch MBP running on Mac OS X version 10.7.3 (Lion). I actually don't want to clone my hard drive or anything because I want to start fresh and new with my new SSD. Most of the tutorials I've read online involve some kind of cloning or having the old hard drive still plugged in and having the SSD connected externally, but these methods won't work for me because I won't have the old hard drive. Thanks so much
