Why can i only apply italics to an entire paragraph?

Question

I make frequent use of Times New Roman for publishing work I do and in my private correspondence. Pages will not allow me to use italics for selections of text within a paragraph when I use paragraph styles imported from Word. I can change the entire paragraph but not a word or two. Italic and bold italic are indicated in both the text selector or the fonts window. Must I modify the imported style in some fashion to permit multiple character styles? If so, how do I do that? Is there a style editor?

So does Pages. When I use italics on a short part of a paragraph it works fine as it should. I can't see why it shouldn't work in your document as well.
Does this mean that I have to define a new style by inserting some text in freeform, formatting pieces of it that I might possibly want to use in the future (italics, super and subscripts, bold italics, etc.) and then renaming it? Or do I somehow add italics, superscripts, subscripts and combinations thereof to the character styles? Or both?
If your intention is to just style a character or several (like a word or more) you can use Character styles if you like
You can download the Pages User Guide from the help menu in your Pages. Chapter 6 deals with styles. it will clarify better than I can.
I can't compare to Word as I don't use it and have never used styles in Word either.
