Why can I (sometimes) not boot until running AHT?

Apologies for the strangely worded question - I'm very confused by this issue.
I have a 15-inch early 2011 MBP. I've added a Vertex 4 SSD as the primary boot drive, keeping the stock HD as a second drive, and upgraded the ram to 2x4gb. Everything else is standard.
Recently I started having problems with OSX freezing and shutting down, sometimes not booting back up successfully - I put it down to some dodgy graphics drivers I'd installed (was running very hot and I suspect overheating) so I backed up my user files and did a full reinstall. It seemed to be OK since then.
Today I had problems again - I think after the battery ran out while I was using it (I don't know if this is related). It shut down and I'd get a grey screen indefinitely when I rebooted, and I just couldn't get back into OSX. These are the things I tried, roughly in the order I tried them:
Performing a safe boot - I'd get the Apple logo and slider, which would progress roughly two thirds of the way in, then I'd get a blue screen
Performing a verbose safe boot - unresponsive grey screen
Booting from local recovery disk - unresponsive grey screen
Resetting NVRAM - made no difference
Resetting SMC - made no difference
Booting to single user mode and running fsck until it comes back clean (no 'volume was modified' message) and restarting - no difference
Trying to isolate any hardware problems - swapping out RAM, disconnecting secondary drive etc - no luck
Finally - running network AHT (opt+D on startup) This didn't find any problems, but seemed to solve whatever problem I was having. I restarted after this and OSX came back up as if nothing had been happening.
So my questions are these - I'd appreciate any insight even if they're not complete answers, because I can't figure out what's going on.
What did AHT do that fixed my problem?
Does that point to a hardware issue, even though the test came back OK?
What can I do to prevent it happening again?
Thanks!

Thanks,
Does this excerpt from the system log help? It seems to represent a (failed)boot attempt.
There's a couple of things at the bottom that look a bit suspicious, but I don't know how to interpret them - ERROR: smcReadData8 failed for key B0PS and activation bcstop timer fired!

  • Why can I sometimes not see mail attachments?

in Apple Mail (connecting to an Exchange server), I sometimes have this weird situation: in the list of emails, I see a little paperclip next to email indicating an attachment. But in the window showing the body of the email, there's no attachment and no way to get it! The same email, when accessed from a different client (e.g., Microsoft Outlook 2011) is clearly seen to have an accessible attachment. Why won't Mail let me have it despite showing it with the paperclip icon?

    Hello Michael Levin
There are multiple options when saving attachment and I have highlighted them below.
Mail (Mountain Lion): View, save, and delete attachments
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11771
    Save an attachment
    Do one of the following:
In the message header area, click Details, and then click Save. Choose an attachment or Save All, and then specify where to save the attachments.
Choose File > Save Attachments and select a location.
Drag the attachment to your desktop to save it there.

  • TS3276 why can I sometimes not receive emails after sending pictures/attachment?

What is the function of 'recovered messages?  Sometimes I can't delete them and as long as they remain, I can't receive any other messages.

the keyboard sometimes not appearing until restarting, why?

Do you use a BlueTooth keyboard? If you do and that keyboard is too close the the iPad the keyboard may not pop up. Turn off the keyboard or turn off Bluetooth if that is the case.

  • Why can I sometimes paste text into a revision history dialog box and other times cannot?

Why can I sometimes paste copied text (from another VI's revision history, for instance or from anywhere else) into a revision history dialog box and other times cannot? All versions of LabVIEW! It's something like the control key becomes diabled. I've noticed the same thing when saving many VI's at once, some will let you paste into revision history and others will not. Aren't all VI's created equally when it comes to revision history? All versions of LabVIEW since 3 have plagued me with this problem.

    Hello,
If you'd like to add text to the revision history of a VI, you can
paste into the Comment box and add all of your text at once.  The
history itself can be read from this window, but cannot be directly
edited.  The History field is read-only in the dialog box.
If you feel this should not be the case, your best course of action is
to express your desire for added functionality to our developers on the Product Feedback page of our website.

why can the microphone not be working when I speak normally and be working when I use the speakerphone?
anyone has had the same problem? Thank you!!!

Apple confirmed, it is an iphone 4S feature, that is intended for our 'benefit'.  It is being solved by each of us using headphones to over-ride the muting function.

  • HELP: MacPro sometimes not booting when powered up... Why?

My 3 year old Mac Pro (2.66 dual-core Intel Xeon processors) sometimes will not boot on powering up. The fans will whir like normal and the gong will sound but then nothing but a white screen... no hard drive noise... like the HD has not been triggered to boot... every time I push the power button to off... everything shuts down... then I immediately push the power button again same sequence and sounds... but this time the drive starts making its normal sounds and the machine boots properly.
I don' think it's the drive itself... but I'm wondering if it might be a drive controller that's going South.
Anyone seen anything like this happen before?

Then you have been cleaning it of dust, taking it out, making sure it isn't clogged; and probably running the fans @ 900 rpm (3 of the 4 anyway).
Could be X1900. Wait and see if 5770 is an option, otherwise the ATI 4870s work fine.
IF you can run Apple Hardware Test off your OEM DVD it came with ('D' on startup) and it is just the video card.
Might also play RAM-Riser tag and try with just one set of RAM and swapping Risers, looking for red light etc.

  • Why can. I not view contacts on webcam

Why can I not view contacts cam on messenger

.mp4 and .m4v are 'containers' and while they may well contain AppleTv compatible 'codecs' this is not necessarily the case.
Also even if a file plays in iTunes it will not necessarily play on AppleTV.
There is an app which will interrogate your files to give the codec info - the name escapes me currently - hopefully someone else will remember or I will!
On your AppleTV have you checked that these files are not appearing under the Home Videos category.
You could also potentially download the Handbrake transcoder and run the files through it using an AppleTV preset.

  • Why can't I set boot to 10.10 when I'm booted to 10.6.8?

ok, I have a multi-boot set up, I have 10.6.8 and 10.10 installed on a pair of HD's, After the debacle of installing yosemite, Why Can't I see the install when I'm booted to my tried and true 10.6.8 system (in Sys Pref/startupdisk/)? Only way I can get to it is restarting and selecting "option". thoughts? thanks.
and I like going back and forth due to Working apps, new's nice but sometimes lately some things don't work right. Better to learn, experiment and try the new stuff, but Work and rely on stuff that actually functions. That's why I skipped 10.7, 10.8 and 10.9.

So boot to Yosemite, open Startup Disk, select your Yosemite disk as the startup disk. Then use OPTION booting to boot into Snow Leopard. Or you can do this in reverse. Depends on which one you want as the permanent startup disk.

Why can people not see the emoji symbols on my texts that I send

Are you using the standard emoji keyboard on the iPhone, or are you using some type of 3rd party application? Are the receivers of your message iPhone users? If they are not, it could be their phone cannot decode and display the emoji from the phone.
