Why can't a backing-map-scheme be specified in caching-schemes?

Most other types of schemes except backing-map-scheme can be specified in the caching-schemes section of the cache configuration XML file and after that be reused in other scheme definitions. What is the motivation for excluding the backing-map-scheme?
/Magnus

Hi Magnus,
you can specify an "abstract" service-type scheme (e.g. distributed-scheme) containing the backing map scheme instead of the backing map scheme itself.
I know it is not as flexible as having a backing map scheme separately, but it is almost as good.
Best regards,
Robert

    Hello paulfromclarendon hills,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
To backup your iPhone, you can either use iCloud on your iPhone, or use iTunes on your computer.  Take a look at the support article below to learn more about backing up your iOS device.

  • Why can't I back up my external HD to a Time Capsule using Time Machine?

I have 2 external Hard Drives attached to my Mac Air. I want to back them both up to my new 2G Time Machine, but here is the wierd thing. When I go to the time machine preferences both disks are shown in the exclude from back-up pane but only one can be removed (which i presume means it will be backed up)
the external HD that can be removed from the "exclude items from back up" is an iomega
the external HD that cannot be removed is a My Book.
Any thoughts on why this might be and what I can do to rectify the situation
    Cheers

Connect the drive directly to your Mac
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility
Click on the drive in the left panel. Info about the drive will be displayed at the bottom of the window.
To format the drive in Mac OS Extended (Journaled)......
First transfer the data that is currently on the drive to another drive for safekeeping as the new format will erase the drive.
Once the data is transferred, then in Disk Utility, click the Erase tab
Select Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as the format of choice
Click Erase the drive will be reformatted.
Transfer the data back onto the drive
Try to backup using Time Machine

  • Why can't I back up my iPhone using my iCloud?

My family just recently switched from T-mobile into AT&T, and my T-Mobile iPhone 5s has absolutely no service at all but I am still able to use it with WiFi, I have been trying to back up my things from my T-Mobile iPhone 5s into my icloud because I received a new phone from AT&T, but my T-Mobile iPhone is not letting me back up anything from my phone into my iCloud.
How else can I back up my things into my iCloud?

What is the error message provided when manually selecting to update your iPhone's iCloud backup direct on the iPhone?

  • Why can't I back up music from my iPhone or iPod to my iTunes?

Happy with my iPhone 4s so far, no battery issue's and an excellent phone but there is one thing I dislike with a passion.
I own more than one computer, I have desktops, laptops and netbooks and I have music I have purchased or recorded from vinyl or backed up from CD on different machines. I want to place this music and videos onto my iPhone to enjoy but when I try to get iTunes to sync it tells me it will delete the music currently on my iPhone for the new playlist? This is ********!
For example if I were to go through the lengthy process of backing up all of my music from my various computers and collections to only one PC and then making a huge playlist just for my iPhone, then my main PC breaks and dies, my only option would be to either never add more music to my iPhone or lose all of the music on my iPhone? And please don't come back with purchases from iTunes will be available, my music collection and everybody else's is much greater than an iTunes collection.
This is the dumbest feature of the iPhone in my opinion and makes functionality a pain.
Is there a work around for this problem? or do you just have to accept you lose everything in the event of a stolen computer or hard disk failure?

Put all your music in one computer liberary, network the computers to use this shared resource so that you can add and remove music from any computer on your network. You are then saving space across all your computers and will be able to keep your music archive well organized.
Back up your music on an external hard drive, USB drive, backup drive or cloud storage just like you would anything else you don't want to lose. Having the music on various computers isn't more safe than having it on one computer. If you have it on one computer and it crashes you lose everything its true, but if you have it on multiple computers you will only lose part of your library but the chances of something going wrong are now upped because you're working with 4 computers. Its good to back everything up anyways.
Sync phone with one computer that has all the networked music in its library. Live long, prosper, grow in the force, etc.

  • Why can't I back up my iPhone to iCloud?

I have been trying to backup my iPhone 4 for hours now. I was able to backup my iPod Touch, but not my iPhone. I have purchased more storage, but that did not help. It says I have 11 GB of free space left and only 3 GB to back up on my iPhone and just over 2 GB to back up on my iPod. I have tried multiple times to back it up and it says "Estimating time remaining..." and then nothing happens. It will say that the backup was incomplete. I delete the incomplete backup and start over and get the same results. I have 15 GB of storage total, but nothing is working. The progress bar never moves but the spiral continues to move next to "Backing up..." Also, I have tried to do it via iTunes and it says it has backed up but on my iPhone it stills says there has never been a backup to my cloud. I have tried to back it up with it connected to my PC (Sony-Vaio) and connected to a wall outlet with the same results. I am trying to be as detailed as possible without being annoying. All I have selected on my iPhone to backup is Contacts, Documents (Of which I have none) and Photos with Find My iPhone selected to ON. My iPod is not even the most current generation, so not sure that makes a difference. It backed up in less than 1 minute. At the time of completion of this post, the progress bar has not moved. Help please! Thank you even if you have no answers!

How long are you leaving it to backup and how fast is your internet connection?
Backing up 3GB of data to a remote server can take many, many hours, especially if your internet up-speed is slow.

  • Why can't I back up to an ext. HD?

I hope this is the right community. Anyway...
I have a Seagate 500 GB HD that used to be my only back up. I used Time Machine. Everything was cool. However, last spring, I bought a new laptop and a 2TB Airport, which is now my external back up for the laptop. (MacBook Pro using 10.7.4) Well, the Airport does a bang up job backing up this computer but since I have it, I would like to use the Seagate as off site back up. Once a month or so, I bring it in from work, back up everything and then take it back to work. Low tech but cheap.
Unfortunately, when I plug in the HD, it shows up on my desk top as "Time Machine Backups" and info tells me it has a capacity of 499.76 GB with 272.57 GB available. So I can't back up to the Seagate from some reason. I get  "This backup is too large for the backup disk. The backup requires 308.75 GB but only 272.57 GB are available."
I tried deleting everything on the Time Machine Backups (the Seagate.) Nothing. Opening Time Machine preferences, I see "Bootcamp" at 70 GB, "Data on "H's Time Capsule" and "Set Up Other Time Capsule".
So, how can I get the Time Machine to use this Seagate as a back up? I'd still like to have the Airport backing up but I figure the fire/flood/thieves that take away the MacBook Pro are just as likely to take the Airprt. Can you help me out?
One final note. My 6 year old iMac uses H's Time Capsule for back up as does my Wife's brand new iMac. She also has carbonite as her off-site back up.
    Thanks.
    Brian

  • Seagate Back Up Plus Desk/ Why can't I back up to my mac?

I have a Seagate back up plus desk but when I try to back anything up to it the disk is locked.
I know I can reformat this disk but it may wipe anything that I have saved on my Windows machine
    Thanks

Yes. You can "export" photos from iPhoto in any resolution you require including original and uncompressed.
There are several options to subsequently import them to your Windows PC but the options depend on the number and size of photos you need to import:
Email them, but all email servers have file attachment limitations so you may not be able to send more than a few at a time. Beware that AOL was known to detect and change photo resolutions while emailing them through AOL. I don't know if they still do that.
Copy them to a USB flash drive
Use Dropbox or other file hosting service - Dropbox has size limitations though.
Enable file sharing on your Mac and your PC and transfer them over a network
These are the first few off the top of my head.

  • Why can't I back up the music from my iPod 160 GB to my computer any more?

The only option I see is to back up purchases from my iPod. What about the music that I've added from CD's? II want to be able to back up all the content on my iPod to my computer. Why does this option not show up any more. If I sync the computer, it will erase everything on the iPod. HELP!

The option you are referring to has never existed.  Apple has only ever allowed you to transfer iTunes purchases from your iPod back to your PC.  Otherwise the sync process is only one way and that is from iTunes to the iPod.
See this older post from another forum member Zevoneer covering the different methods and software available to assist you with the task of copying content from your iPod back to your PC and into iTunes.
