Why can't airport utility see my airport express?

After purchasing a new airport express the airport utility can't find it. The Mac mini was previously connected to another Express at another location with no problems.

Have you kept up to date with the Airport Utility releases? You may very well need v5.6.1. It can be downloaded from here if you don't have it, and it is key to managing the new Airport Express models.

Why does my airport express keep cutting out?

I have a 1st gen Airport Express and use it to stream music from my PC, iPhone 4, iPad and iPod Touch. My Airport Express is connected to a Teac UD-H01 DAC via an optical cable which is connected to an amp and speakers. I had no problems at all with this set up until I upgraded the Airport Express firmware to 7.6.3. The sound then started to drop out frequently. To cut a long story short after various testing, the problem had to be the Airport Express. I called Apple support but they were not much help and couldn't fix the problem and said they would speak to engineering and phone back. While I was waiting I decided to have another go to find the problem and opened the airport utility and saw that there was an option to downgrade the firmware. At this point I realised that the problems started about the same time that I upgraded the firmware to 7.6.3 but didn't think at the time that Apple would release a firmware that didn't work. Anyway I downgraded to 7.6.1 and hey presto, everything worked again. A couple of days ago I noticed that firmware 7.6.4 was available and thought I'd give it a go, not good - same problem as 7.6.3. I've downgraded to 7.6.1 again and all is well. Hope this helps.

  • Why can I no longer see CS6 in creative cloud

Why can I no longer see CS6 to download in Creative Cloud?

    HI Intro,
Once you will launch Creative Cloud Desktop you will get the option "Find new apps" and a drop down in front of it.
On the Drop down menu you need to select "Previous Version".
Once you do that you will get the option to download the Creative Cloud applications.
Please check and let me if it works or not.
    Thanks,

Why does my Airport Express say "self assigned IP address"?  No IP address for the ethernet, and it is not connecting to my cable router any longer...

Some cable providers.....like mine, a well known company......seem to take anywhere from a few moments to sometimes up to 30 minutes to allow their equipment back at the cable company to fully reset and issue a new fresh connection.
So, it would not hurt to leave things powered down for 15-20 minutes or more when you perform the reset that John Galt suggests.

  • Can my Airport Express be used to extend the signal for an iPad2

I am using a Linksys wired router as the beginning of my home network. There is an ethernet cable running from it through a wall to the Xbox 360 and an Airport Express serving as the base for the wireless network. I have an iBook on the other side of the wall and about 10 feet and an iMac about 20 feet with one wall in between. These two have some fluctuation in their signal but only between 4 bars and 3. I just got an iPad 2 and it is causing me grief because it struggles to maintain a connection just another 10 feet from the iBook. If I put it next to the iMac when it has full 4 bars the iPad gets maybe 2. The iPad has full bars if next to the router. That kind of defeats the purpose of buying an iPad. So, my question is how to rearrange the network so the iPad is happy in the living room where I mostly use it. I had considered moving the iMac and using it as a base station to free the Airport Express for other duty but where I want to move it is further away from the living room. Right now the Airport is wired to the router. Is this necessary for it to be a part of the network? I know I can use it to get music from iTunes to speakers but would that placement also work as a wireless extender? Would just buying another router for the Xbox location and putting the Airport there also be a better solution?

ladybastet, let's clean up some terminology. You should designate only one router for your network. At present that is the Linksys. Your wireless access point is the Express, and it gets its network connection from the Linksys. Is that correct?
If I put it next to the iMac when it has full 4 bars the iPad gets maybe 2. The iPad has full bars if next to the router.
Now that you know your Linksys is the router, is the above correct? Unless the Linksys is also a wireless access point, the iPad's proximity to it will not matter. Only its proximity to the device creating the wireless network is a factor. In your case, I believe that is the Express.
There is an ethernet cable running from it through a wall to the Xbox 360 and an Airport Express serving as the base for the wireless network.
I'm not sure I understand. Is one Ethernet cable going to two places? What is it connected to, precisely?
Right now the Airport is wired to the router. Is this necessary for it to be a part of the network?
In the case of a wired router, yes.
I'm wondering if you have things configured properly, particularly if you have configured the iMac to share its network connection over AirPort. I'm even wondering if your iPad has unintentionally joined a neighbor's wireless network.
I had considered moving the iMac and using it as a base station to free the Airport Express for other duty but where I want to move it is further away from the living room.
Using the iMac to share a wired Ethernet connection to create its own wireless network is certainly possible, but it is less than ideal. For one, the iMac would have to be powered on all the time.
You do not need or want another router.
It is impossible for me to be certain of your network environment (meaning, the size and configuration of your home, the proximity of competing wireless networks, the number of network devices, and the potential for interference) but you might be better off replacing the wired Linksys router with an AirPort Extreme. That would give you the ability to create a "roaming network" or to use your Express to extend the Extreme's wireless network. I think this would be the easiest solution, but given the uncertainly of your description this expense may not be necessary.
Much of my confusion stems from your original question: "Can my Airport Express be used to extend the signal for an iPad2" - the quick answer is yes, but a prerequisite question is, "what signal?" The only "signal" I can determine that may be relevant is the one created by the Express. Once we have the terminology fixed, perhaps we can fix what's wrong with your network.

  • Can multiple Airport Expresses be connected via ethernet to an Airport Extreme to extend a single WiFi Network?

I am a big fan of both the Airport Extreme and Airport Express.  In my work environment, I need to create a good quality single wireless network around 2 large aircraft hangars and some offices at the perimeters.  We have a good quality wired Cat5e ethernet network extended between the buildings and offices now.  Is this possible and does it seem like a good practical solution?  I think that 4 or 5 Airport expresses would easily provide good wireless coverage in the needed areas.

Can multiple AirPort Expresses be connected via ethernet to an AirPort Extreme to extend a single WiFi Network?
Yes, this will work just fine as long as any individual Ethernet cable run will not exceed much over 330 feet or about 100 meters.

  • Can an airport express help

Mum and dad are staying on a campside with wifi. They have to fill in a form on Safari to get access. But the reception on their iMac G5 is bad. Can an Airport Express boost the signal of the hotspot to help the G5? And how to do this?

An external antenna would be a possibility, but these things are always "iffy". I've had good and poor results with the same product in different locations.
Another idea...IF...the AirPort Express is a newer 802.11"n" version...would be to configure the device to "join" the wireless network at the camp. Then enable the ethernet port on the device and connect to the computer using an ethernet cable.
If you can locate the AirPort Express where it can receive a better signal and then run the ethernet cable to the computer, this may work better than wireless only on the computer.

  • Can an airport express 802.11n extend range of Netgear base stn?

can an airport express 802.11n model (i think it is two years old) work as a range extender for an existing base station (it's a netgear station, not an airport base) without having to hook up an internet cable to the Airport Express?  --Bishop

Virtually no chance that the Express is compatible with a product from another manufacturer, but you can always give it a try.
Apple designed the "extend" feature to only work with other Apple routers.
If you have already been trying to do this and cannot, I think you already have your answer.

  • Can the airport express be used to stream music and act as network "extender" at the same time?

I have a time capsule as my base station but need to improve network coverage in the other end of the house. Have a new airport express that I use for music streaming. Can this airport express be used for both music streaming and "network extension" at the same time, or do I need to buy another product?

Yes, it can. You can either:
Extend a wireless network. The Express needs to be positioned half way between the TC and the area without network coverage, and can be flakey. This is wireless only.
Use Ethernet/Powerline. This is the preferred option (called a roaming network in Apple terminology). This allows for the Express to be placed wherever you want, as long as it reaches the other end of the house.

  • Hi I am not sure ! Ask can use airport express join pc ?

Hello I am deaf ! My use apple .  My friend. Said me can use airport express join PC ?

The AirPort Express is a wireless router. You can use it in a number of ways, including providing a wireless network that a PC can join.

  • Can and Airport Express be used as a wireless adapter for a computer?

Or to rephrase - Can an Airport Express that's connected to an existing wireless network wirelessly let a computer without a wireless adapter connect by plugging the computer's ethernet into the Express ethernet?
This would turn the Express into a fairly stupid and expensive wireless adapter, I'm sure, but it might be a handy trick in a pinch.
    Thanks
    MJ

Yes. For example, with the latest "n" version, if you update to firmware 7.3.1, you can set it to "Join a wireless network" and tick the box "Allow Ethernet clients". This will do as you describe.
This works for me with a PC that is both a Windows box (XPsp3) and a Linux box (OpenSUSE 10.3).
However, I am less than enamored with my Express in this mode. It has frequent disconnects, when the thing just looses the wireless connection for some reason. If you are in the US, there may be other options you want to consider - or wait until a 7.3.2 update and hope that it fixes the general unreliability f the current Express. Here in UK, there are few other options.

  • Can older Airport Express work with new Airport Extreme?

I had an older airport base station (dome shaped) and I was extending it with an Airport Express. I didn't need extra range, it was so I could play my iTunes from my laptop through my home speakers (or use my iPhone to do the same). Now I bought one of the newer flat Base Stations but I can't seem to get it to hook up to the old Express so I can still play my music. Do the old Express's not work with the new base stations?
And if not, is there any other way for me to be able to play music wirelessly to my home stereo from my mac and iPhone/iPods, like I was able to do before?

Im thinking my Airport Express has failed. I tried hard resetting it several times and I can see it through Airport utility, nor my iPhone. The iPhone sees it, but it cannot set it up.
Looks like I need to get a new Airport Express no matter what. Ive had it for a Looooong time. So I guess its number was finally up.
    Thanks for the response seancobrien.

  • HT1515 why does my airport express keep going offline?

i use airport for air play but it keeps going into flashing amber light about every week. why?

I found on some non-Apple tech sites some interesting info. One guy was having the same exact issues and wrote a script to see what was going on between the Airport base station and the Airport Expresses. It appears that the two devices were having security verification issues and that is why the Airport Expresses get getting knocked offline.   In other words, when they talk with each other they fail the security verification and the Airport Expresses go haywire.
So the solution is to turn off the security on both the Airport base station and the Airport Expresses through the Airport Utility. Then, on the Airport base station you check the option to create a closed network.  In other words, your wi-fi network is now unprotected but it is not broadcasting to anyone that it is there. From then on, you will have to choose "other" on your laptops/iPads/iPhones/etc and type in your wi-fi network's name rather than just choosing your wi-fi network from a list of options.
I did this a few weeks back and I have had zero issues since the very moment I did the above steps. The network is 100% reliable and faster. No more rebooting. Is it a tad bit unprotected?  Yes, but no one knows the network is there. If someone is smart enough to be looking for non-broadcasting wi-fi networks and finding yours, then they are sophisticated enough to defeat your normal security protocols anyway. Maybe if Apple ever decides to fix this problem, which appears they might not be interested in doing, then you could go back to normal security protocols. But until then, this works wonderfully. Give it a try and see.
