Why can't apple trace a stolen product?!

Why can't/won't apple trace a stolen product?!

The following conditions must be true if you want to find your iPhone:
You signed in with your Apple ID on your iPhone in Settings>iCloud and enabled Find My iPhone
You enabled Location Services in Settings
The iPhone has an active internet connection either data plan through your provider or Wi-Fi
The iPhone is powered on
You only need to go to icloud.com and sign in to your Apple ID then click Find My iPhone or download Find my iPhone on the iPad or iPhone you are trying to use to find your lost/stolen iPhone on.
The iPhone that is lost does not need the Find My iPhone app installed to find it.

  • Why can't Apple help track stolen iPods

I had my iPod stolen sometime between curbside check-in and baggage pick-up during a recent trip on American Airlines from Dallas to St Louis. Someone found my 30GB iPod that I had hidden in the pocket of a pair of jeans in my checked baggage. I have the serial number and feel that Apple could help, through itunes, provide some way of tracking.
    Any thoughts?

A computer need never be connected to the internet in order to use an iPod with iTunes, so Apple have no process in place to either report or track stolen iPods. All you can do is report the theft to the Police together with the serial number, and if your iPod was registered with Apple when you first got it, they will assist the Police in returning it to you should it ever be recovered.

  • Stolen - Why can't apple track?

My one-month old ipod nano was stolen out of my house yesterday. While I am extremely bummed that it is gone, I was somewhat comforted knowing that whoever swiped it couldn't use it since I registered it. But now I discover that the whole registration thing is a crock! It doesn't protect me from theft (not sure it ever claimed it did but I thought it was some sort of safety mechanism).
At the very least why can't Apple just set up a system where if someone reports a stolen ipod, they flag the serial number, and if it is used they will give the information to the police?
I'm pretty upset right now but that does not at all seem unreasonable to me and actually, I was telling a co-worker about it this morning and she also has an ipod and she thought the whole registration thing would prevent someone else from using it as well.

Your refrigerator can fit in a thief's pocket, eh?
I had my car broken into 3 days ago and lost a 60GB Vid iPod. Well hidden away, but connected to a Harman/Kardon Drive + Play.
In Australia, I have notified Apple (ph: 133 MAC) and they have flagged the iPod as stolen. They also took the Police Report case no. If this iPod goes in for a service, battery replacement, etc... it will sound alarms (figuratively) and the cops & I will be notified.
The bad news is I have to wait for this event to happen (if ever).
Although US constitutional laws prevent covert tracking of these devices (something about protecting the 'civil liberties' of thieves), these laws do not apply in Australia, so why can't a flagged serial number and IP address be forwarded to local authorites? We have the technology, gentlemen, and email is free.
This would have to be an excellent iPod theft deterrent (win for me) and would free up some server space on this board that seems to be quickly filling up with threads titled "Stolen iPod" (win for you).

  • HT201472 Why can't Apple turn on the Find My iPhone feature if it's been stolen?

A friend of mine's house was robbed this morning. They lost tens of thousands of dollars worth of belongings, including a new ipad 4. They have icloud on the device... and had the Find My iPhone app on other devices, but not the new ipad. In extreme cases, why can't Apple remotely turn on the Find My iPhone feature? If they could find the ipad it could lead them to the people who stole everything else from them.

The suggestions has, more or less, been implemented in iOS 7: with iOS 7, you can make stolen devices unusable, and still display a text that might allow them to be recovered. See, for instance, http://www.imore.com/ios-7-preview-activation-lock-aims-keep-out-crooks

  • Why can't apple track stolen ipods

Why can't apple block stolen ipods from being used again?  There should be a reporting line so they can't be traded in or resold.

How would you certify that you were the original owner?  How would you stop a spiteful X-girl/boy friend from using personal knowledge to report your device stolen and get it disabled?  There are lots of ways a service like this could be abused.
You can setup your iPod Touch via iCloud so that you can disable your iPod Touch remotely, if it goes on-line without being wiped first.  That means you are in control, and Apple does not need to certify it is really you.  If you use an insecure password, or allow your X (or other) to have access to your password, it is your responsibility.
Apple most likely would not like to be in the law enforcement business.  Less liability.

  • Why can't  Apple accept that smaller cities and countries exist??

I just wish that Apple would realize that there are other places on earth besides the US, Europe and Asia!!
I am trying to put in my city code for my clock on my iphone 4 and it will not let me put in Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago. My Nokia phone bought in 2005 allows this and my cheap Casio watch recognizes other smaller cities on earth...why can't Apple??
I thought the general idea was to have ALL citizens on earth using your products??
Please do something update wise (and NO, I do not want to enter Bridgetown, Barbados as a 'next best bet'.
    Thank you,

I was looking for how to add any city in Trinidad to my world clock and came upon his post. It wasn't necessary to dig it up but I had the same complaint and because the posters here were mostly un-kind and un-understanding towards hm, I hoped he would know that not everybody thinks his complaint is invalid.
Not having the capitol means the whole country is not listed. Any city. It's hard to use another country's time zone because times may change due to things like daylight-savings-time in one country but not in another. If you live on the east coast of the US, you can still use a city from your own country in the same time zone. I can use Toronto even though that's not my real hometown in Canada. I can use Beijing for my current city even though I live 1000's of miles away but still in China. There's no city listed for all of Trinidad. I'm not sure what city to list for the same time zone as Port of Spain without worrying that it will be wrong at sometime because country differences.
Of course not all cities in the world can/should be listed but perhaps all capital cities or the largest city in even the smallest of countries could be listed.
I guess I do not have a grip on your reality. In my reality your post makes no sense because it only tries to insult another poster and offers neither help nor explaination. I'm not sure what you gain from that. To be fair though, it does seem like many people like to post in this way.
Thanks for your suggestion Michael Black.

  • Why can't Apple offer a financing plan that actually works?

Heres my story: I'm a film student at the College of Santa Fe in New Mexico, and I wanted to get an iMac G5 to do my video/audio editing on. I applied for Apples Credit Account only to be denied because I don't have a credit history, although I have made every monthly payment on a loan for a truck i've had since 2001. I'm sorry but I am completely ****** off that Apple can't use some sort of financing other than a credit card. Why would I want to spend money that isn't mine and that I haven't made yet? Ontop of that, the interest rates are just outrageous and completely unnecessary. However, I do have a job at the college, where I'm making about 150-200 every two weeks. Why can't Apple have a payment plan for their computers? I could make a $400 down payment, and then make payments every two weeks, but I can't because Apple doesn't offer anything like that. Just how in the **** am I supposed to get the system I need when the company that makes them won't offer me an affordable way to purchase their products. I think this is complete ********, and Apple needs to straighten their **** out. Anyone else feel the same way?

I believe the problem you are having is caused by Juniper Bank, Apple's current credit lender. They used to use MBNA and I would get approved immediately online. Last time I applied online at Apple, I got rejected and it said they had to do more checking. BTW...I have PERFECT credit. Well, about a MONTH later I get a credit card in the mail from Juniper with a $5,000.00 credit limit. Go figure. It was to late though. I went and bought one through Amazon.com and even got a $200.00 rebate. I would go apply there once or check at a bank or Apple reseller locally. Good luck!

  • Why is itunes so hard to use - and why can't apple fix it?

why is itunes so hard to use - and why can't apple fix it
I dont know anybody who likes the way itunes works.'
This last version is beyond awful. It took an already hard to use program - but one that I had at least figured out and made it even harder.

    Wendy,
If you are experiencing a particular problem, please post specifics, and most likely someone here will be able to help.

  • Why can't Apple TV stream movies like the iTunes store can?

I'm in the UK with an Apple TV 2nd Gen. 9Mb/s broadband speed checked and have conclusively failed to rent one single movie since I bought this a year ago. Every time I log in, select the film, purchase it, hit play and all I get is "connection error please try later" Playing movie trailers and everything else is fine. Surely the point of renting a movie online is so you can watch it straight away. Lovefilm works just fine via my PS3.
The other day I tried again on Apple TV with the same error so figured I'd try and rent the movie direct from iTunes Store on my laptop, hey presto, 2 mins later I'm watching my film via my Macbook Pro hooked up to my TV.
So the big question is: Why can not Apple TV stream a movie like the iTunes Store can? Of course I appreciate that a certain amount of buffering has to happen but that is never evident on Apple TV.
    Anyone got any ideas?
    Thanks.

    Intermittent problems
Intermittent problems are often a result of interference. Interference can be caused by other networks in the neighbourhood or from household electrical items.
You can download and install iStumbler (NetStumbler for windows users) to help you see which channels are used by neighbouring networks so that you can avoid them, but iStumbler will not see household items.
Refer to your router manual for instructions on changing your wifi channel or adjusting your multicast rate.
There are other types of problems that can affect networks, but this is by far the most common, hence worth mentioning first. Networks that have inherent issues can be seen to work differently with different versions of the same software. You might also try moving the Apple TV away from other electrical equipment.
    Consistent Problems
A frequent cause of consistent failure to enable AirPlay or HomeSharing at all, is the service being blocked on the network. Make sure your network isn't hidden, has a unique name, that MAC address authentication is disabled, security is set to use WPA 2 Personal and that there is only one router/device acting as a DHCP server and providing NAT services.
Make sure your router/computer allows access over the following ports
    Port
    Type
    Protocol
    Used By
    80
    TCP
    HTTP
    AirPlay
    443
    TCP
    HTTPS

    UDP
    MDNS (Win)
    Bonjour/AirPlay
    49163
    UDP
    MDNS (Win)
    Bonjour/AirPlay
Refer to your router manual/manufacturer for any settings that are specific to that model.
Another frequent cause of consistent failure to enable AirPlay or HomeSharing at all, is security software, in many cases configuring it correctly, disabling it or even uninstalling it can help, but in some cases the security software can cause problems that simply reconfiguring, disabling or uninstalling cannot reverse.
If you are consistently unable to activate AirPlay, have tried all the steps in this article and have security software installed on your system, you might benefit from contacting its provider or participating in any online forums they run to discuss the matter with them.

Well, since you've had the same problem, with three different phones, that all use different size sim cards, it seems pretty obvious the problem is with your carrier/coverage & nothing to do with your phone or sim card.

  • Why can't Apple give us some feedback re blank purchased app screen

There have been numerous complaints about purchased apps not being able to be downloaded due to blank screen.
WHY CAN'T APPLE PROVIDE SOME FEEDBACK????

These are user-to-user forums consisting on people like you. The only Apple employees are the Hosts who keep the wheels from falling off the forums and break up the occasional donnybrook. So no one who posts here can speak for Apple.
The most effective means to get iPad issues/concerns to Apple is this:

  • Why can't Apple install an iTunes Visualizer option??

Why can't Apple install an iTunes Visualizer option to the screen saver, instead of the iPhoto slideshow??  I don't always want pictures moving over the screen, and especially when I'm listening to the music channels. Having such a large format for the iTunes Visualizer would be . . . you know, cool.

I totally agree and would love to see that option! I think the best way to tell Apple these things would be at http://www.apple.com/feedback/appletv.html though.
