Why can't computer detect my 4th gen. iPod Shuffle?

Someone gave me a 4th gen. Shuffle as a gift but my Macbook (OS 10.6.8) doesn't recognize it when I plug it into a USB port with the connector that came with it.  I've had the shuffle plugged into a power source continuously since I got it, so it's not a battery problem.
I've looked at the Apple troubleshooting article for this problem, but it's not a USB port issue (the USB ports work fine with everything else) and resetting the device doesn't help, nor does making sure the plug connection is secure.
I have noticed that the 3.5 mm. plug fits loosely enough on this shuffle for the shuffle to drop off the connector if it's left dangling from a power source and not supported.  Could the problem be a faulty male plug?  Something else?  Thanks for any suggestions out there!

If it's that loose, you may not have the plug pushed in completely.  That headphones jack is the type that accepts headphones with remote control buttons, so the fit may be tighter than expected.  Make sure you push until you feel it "click" into place.

Can i replace my 20gb 4th gen ipod with a bigger hard drive are there any that fit?
Any help would be greatly appreciated here.

Assuming that the larger device would fit inside of the casing, yes.  However, I'm not aware of any such drives.   You may have to do a bit of digging around online to see if you can find out any more info.

  • TS3572 My 4th gen ipod shuffle will not show up in iTunes

My 4th gen ipod shuffle will not show up in iTunes, and is not recognized by my computer. I am using a MacBook Pro purchased six months ago, with all software up to date. I am using the most recent version of iTunes, and the original factory connector.  It does charge through the computer, but is not seen by the computer.  I have gone through all of the recommened troubleshooting, and have verified that the connectors are plugged in properly.

    Thanks for a reply
The cable that I'm using came with my 5th gen nano. The 6th gen Ipod shows that it's connected but the computer doesn't see it, so I don't think that it's the cable.
I did try this before when looking at the troubleshooting guide and nothing happens. It just resets and then the Ipod screen tells me that it's connected to the computer. It still is unseen by Itunes and no where to be found in my computer.
I don't have another computer to plug it into at the moment but I may be able to visit a friend that owns a decent PC in a few days. If that doesn't work out I will be getting a new lap top in a week and I'm hoping that it will work on that, but it won't be a Mac. So, let's say it works when I plug it into one of these computers, should I reset my Ipod from there or is there something else I should do?

  • Help needed with 4th gen. iPod shuffle and "reshuffling" music

I have a silver 4th gen. iPod shuffle that works well for me.     I had 196 songs on it and in the last couple of days, I added 14 more.  Now, I have 210 songs on it.  Cool.  The issue I have is NONE of the new songs play. I do get a good mixture of music and it's pretty random but in the 7 or so hours I listened to my iPod today at work, NONE of the new songs I added played at all.  I would guess at least one of the new songs would have played but none did.
I found the iPod manual online in PDF format and read the instructions for "reshuffling" the iPod, but I'm not sure that worked.   So, here are my questions:
When I add new music, must I manually "reshuffle" the songs manually or should that happen automatically?
When I "reshuffle" the songs, I follow these steps:  "To reshuffle songs, slide the three-way switch from shuffle (icon) to play in order (icon) and back to
shuffle again.  Must the iPod be playing music when I do this or does that matter?
I manually add the music to the iPod and don't automatically sync anything, nor do I have any playlists.
    Thanks in advance!
    Peace...

You may want to play the shuffle with the switch in the middle play-in-order position.  Then, when you play songs from the All Songs list, they play in alphabetical order.  That should make it easier to confirm that songs on the new batch does actually play (because the order is not random).
Also, there are only about 200 songs on there, so keep hitting Next until hear one of the new songs.  If you get back to the first song without hearing one of the new songs, something is wrong.
It should not matter when you do the reshuffle step, whether the iPod is playing or not.
Have you checked using iTunes, to confirm the new batch of songs is on the shuffle?  If the iTunes sidebar is hidden, from the menu bar, under View, select Show Sidebar.  The shuffle appears in the sidebar, under DEVICES.  Click the small triangle to the left of the shuffle's name, to drop down its content list (indented below the shuffle) Click on Music there.  The list of songs on the shuffle is shown to the right.  Are those 14 new songs on the list?

  • I have a 1st & 4th gen ipod shuffle.  When I copy a playlist to the 1st gen it plays back correctly.  The 4th gen plays back the same playlist alphabetically by artist.  The copy by play order function makes no difference.  Any suggestions?

I have a 1st & 4th gen Ipod shuffle.  When I copy a playlist to the older shuffle it plays back in order.  When I copy a playlist to the 4th gen shuffle it plays by alphabetically by artist.  I used the copy by play order but with no change.  Any suggestions?

This is crazy. What are those guys thinking. I would love to have my 2nd generation ipod shuffle back - it was so easy to use, so easy to operate, alas it was lost/stolen! There are 2 big disasterous (disaster to ease of use) changes in the ipod 4th generation. This particularly relates to podcasts. One is they only play in order by source/type of podcast. You cannot break out of that unless, you have someone to show you how to use the voice over which is not covered anywhere on the very thin manual or elsewhere. Secondly and just as bad but related also, you cannot line them up on your shuffle by date, preference, anything. ONLY apple will do this for you. I hate the thing and will return it today after visiting Apple 3 days in a row to try and get answers, trying to apply the answers and realizing beside the fact that some of the answers given were wrong, they were not going to lead to ease of use. Who said this was better? I was struggling with this (not knowing how to break out of one type of podcast) until i went to Apple and talked to about 4 people who knew less than i did about the shuffle. OUr family has just bought 2 new macbook pros for my son and wife. I have had my macbook for 4 years and love it. I had my ipod shuffle (2 gen) for the same time and loved it but now I don't trust Apple. Are they going to make changes just to make changes. Get some consumer advice, please not just from nerds who want more buttons but from everyday people.

  • TS3572 My 4th gen ipod shuffle is either not working or dead...

My 4th gen ipod shuffle is either not working or dead, i have opened it and found that its black near audio pin is injected and its heating while connecting via usb to laptop neeeeeeeeeeeeeeed help any one...............................
i think its kind of short circuited is any thing workable in this device or not........

I solved my problem by restoring the shuffle to factory settings on the summary screen. Now it seems to work the way it's supposed to. Many thanks to Apple for zero help, as usual. Apple should direct less resources to developing the next snazzy ipad and more to cleaning up and enhancing itunes. I'll make the same editorial comment about the iphone 4 voicemail options.

  • Just bought 4th Gen.iPod shuffle from Amazon.  My computer (Windows 7) wont recognise device, neither does iTunes.  Have reinstalled iTunes, and nothing seems to work,  Anyone have any ideas.

Just bough 4th Generation iPod Shuffle from Amazon - comp;uter doesnt recognmise device, neither does iTunes.  I have re-installed iTunes, re-started Computer but nothing seems to work.       I have a 2nd generation iPod shuffle and that is recognised by computer.  Anyone have any suggestions - I am at my wits end.

There is a USB printer connected to the back port of the PC. The mouse and keyboard are both PS/2.
I did attempt to reinstall the USB root drivers. After uninstalling iTunes and all the other apple software packages included, I uninstalled everything USB in Device Manager, then rebooted the PC to let Windows reinstall it all.
Reinstalling the OS -might- fix the issue, but if that were the case, it's most likely just a software conflict that can easily be fixed if I can manage to narrow the specific conflicts down. I've already essentially disabled everything with MSCONFIG except for Apple stuff, so I'm at a loss as to where to go. I've attempted the 5 Rs and all that as well, none of it seems to do the trick. I also cleared the temp folder multiple times (once per each iTunes uninstall / reinstall following the support site directions of uninstalling all the extra apple software) as well as attempted restarts of the Apple services.
One oddity I would like to point out is that if I attempt to restart the iPod service through services.msc, it will not restart. It throws the error message of "the service failed to respond in a timely fashion" or whatever. I instead have to use the windows Task Manager to manually kill the iPod process in the processes list.
I just now removed the USB printer and plugged the shuffle into the same port, but I receive the same error message in iTunes about the iPod being corrupted and it needing a restore. If I push restore, the software gets stuck in an endless loop. There are no other USB devices attached to this computer, the motherboard drivers are fully up to date from nVidia's website, and other USB devices clearly function just fine (USB memory sticks, USB printer, etc). If I use the Diagnostics option under Help in iTunes, it will claim there is no iPod connected, and, again, the iPod still does not show up in Windows Explorer under My Computer as an attached device, nor does it show up in Disk Management as a mounted partition.

  • Can bomberman game work with 4th Gen ipod Nano?

In the games section it says they all work for the 3rd and 4th gen ipods and then inside the games it says different in some cases, and in the bomberman game one it says only the 3rd gen nano, will this not work with the 4th gen nano? Lemme know thanks! AIM me at azrael4791 about this! THanks!

You're looking at this one, right?
    http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewGame?id=270226845&s=143441
Interesting, the main page does say 3rd & 4th gen nanos, but the Bomberman page doesn't. However some of the other games I checked randomly do say 4th gen nano.
If I were you, I'd contact Hudson Software - the makers of that iPod click-wheel game.

  • Some songs can't be loaded on 2nd gen ipod shuffle (question with answer)

I'm getting the following message when trying to load some songs on to my 2nd gen iPod shuffle:
"Some of the items in the iTunes library, including 'Allegro', were not copied to the iPod "iPod" because they cannot be played on this iPod." When I click on the details triangle I get "Allegro" was not copied because the audio format is not supported by the iPod "iPod".
This is happening for many songs that were previously loaded on this iPod. The songs were all loaded into iTunes from CDs. I have tried the iPod reset utility, deleting all songs and reloading, selecting a single song to sync, no luck.
When I do a "Get Info" on these songs they say they were encoded with either iTunes 6.0.5 or iTunes 7.0.2.
OK. Even before I was able to post the question, I found the answer. If I select the songs and from the "Advanced" menu select "Create AAC version", the AAC version can be copied to the iPod. Get Info shows the encoding has changed so AAC and iTunes 9.0.1.
Hope this helps someone else with a similar problem.
    david.

You can't "sync" that is automatically update an iPod from multiple libraries or computers. If you want to connect and use an iPod on more than one computer you need to change the update preference in the iPod Summary tab to "Manually manage music and videos" and click Apply.

  • HT1238 ipor shuffle will not reset. error message: do not have enough access for this operation. Tried ipod shuffle reset utility, error message: intended for 32 bit windows version. This 4th gen ipod shuffle is junk.

    why cant this reset?

That old "Reset Utility" is ONLY for the 1st and 2nd gen iPod shuffle, which had some issues that prevented using the standard Restore in iTunes, so Apple release that utility.  It was released when Windows XP was the latest version of Window; it does not work with Windows 7.   But it would not help you if your shuffle is 4th gen.
When you say "reset," are you trying to do a Restore on the shuffle in iTunes, from the shuffle's Summary tab?  When does that error message appear, exactly?

  • 4th Gen iPod Shuffle not detected by Windows(7)/iTunes

    Hi,
    I have an iPod Shuffle 4th Gen (I believe it's a 2GB).  I use windows 7.
I'm having an issue where Windows and iTunes cannot detect my iPod shuffle.
It was working fine, then I did a restore and set it into manual handling.  About 30 minutes later, I heard a USB device get disconnected from Windows (it played the USB disconnect sound/tones over my headphones).  Now, upon plugging it in to ANY USB port, it does not appear.
I've looked at several articles/troubleshooting pages, and none seem to have resolved this issue.
I also noticed that when plugged in, it slowly flashes a green light (no orange light comes on at all).  I was concerned there was an issue with power, but upon turning the device on, I get an automated message saying to add music to the device before it turns itself off.
    Any thoughts would be welcome.
    Thank you.

Do the USB ports work for for other devices?

  • Brand new 4th Gen. iPod shuffle. not recognized as a device.

Hello, I am trying to set up my brand new iPod shuffle (4th generation) and when plugged into a computer get nothing.
So far I've tried: uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes
         -tried on 3 different computers
-tried using different USB drives in case one was not recieving power
-went through the troubleshoot page and still nothing
-tried to reset iPod by unplugging, turning off for 10 seconds and restrating
    Still nothing!  Please help!!!

If the light does not come ON when you connect, that means the shuffle is not seeing a connection, either for data or for power.  So it's probably not a software-related problem on the computer (such as something related to iTunes or an OS setting).  Make sure you have inserted the plug on the USB cable completely into the shuffle's headphones jack.  The fit can be tighter than expected, especially when it's brand new.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3572
If that does not help, since you tried different computers and confirmed the USB port is working with an external drive, the cause is probably not a faulty USB port on the computer.  That leaves a faulty USB docking cable or a problem on the shuffle as the most likely cause.
If you have an Apple Store nearby, and you should make a reservation at the store's Genius Bar, and take your shuffle (and cable) there.
