Why can't FF successfully set itself as my default browser?

Firefox 3.6.10 is unable to successfully set itself as my default browser.
I'm running Win7/64 Enterprise SP1
FF is set to check itself on startup, and each time reports that it is not the default browser, do I wish to set it so? I say "yes", but am asked next time anyway.
If I then shut FF down immediately, then restart it, I am asked again.
FF has an option to "check now" whether it is the default, under the Tools->Options->General tab.
Clicking "Check Now" brings up that same dialogue.
I click "Check Now", am told FF is not the default, do I want to set it so? I answer "Yes", the dialogue is dismissed.
I then click "Check Now" again, and am again told that FF is not my default. (Yes, I am Administrator)
Under Default Programs, FF is designated to handle FTP, HTTP and HTTPS protocols, and to open .htm and .html filetypes.
As far as I can tell, FF acts as if it is the default browser. Why is its own check for same always coming up false?
What does FF really check, if not the protocols and file associations?
How can I make this stop?

I already was administrator and general sysgod of my computer.
I was provoked into trying related things at random, and here's what I came up with as a workaround:
If you go into Control Panel->Default Programs -> Set Program Access and Defaults, there are three radio-button options: Microsoft, Non-Microsoft, and Custom.
(Custom was already selected)
With the Mozilla Options->Advanced window open, check the "Set as default browser", then click the "Check Now" button. It will report that FF is not your default browser, etc. Ecce quaestio, and all that.
Back to "Set Program Access", click the "Non-Microsoft" button. Close it.
Back to FF, and try "Check Now" again. Now it says "FF is already your default browser".
Now RE-OPEN Control Panel and get back to "Set Program Access and Defaults". It's back to "Custom". But FF is apparently satisfied that it is the default now. Let's see if it stays that way.

• How do I set firefox as the default browser in Windows Server 2012 Group Policy Editor?

Hello, I am unable to set firefox as the default browser despite multiple different attempts to do so using group policy.
I have:
- Set a registry command (targeted at 32/64 via a WMI query) to reset the opening command as shown below:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\http\shell\open\command
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -osint -url "%1"
- Set a powershell logon script to run (that does run):
firefox.exe -silent -setDefaultBrowser
Despite setting the above it seems the client computers browsers are not affected by the settings above. When the script runs or if I run the command above a UAC window pops up and requests that I accept the command (for the setDefaultBrowser) but even if I click yes as an administrator it does nothing.
Since GPO in 2012 has changed perhaps there is something that I am missing? Do I need to somehow disable Windows Internet Explorer from achieving default browser status?
Please do not reply if you will suggest that I use Internet Explorer Maintenance (since this function in GPO has been disabled since IE10)
My DC is Server 2012, my client computers are Win7 32/64.

The above reply does not take into account that I am trying to use GROUP POLICY EDITOR to make it the default browser.

Hi everyone, I have Snow Leopard 10.6.8. I have been very very frustrated by this problem. [I could not create new windows, and anything that opens new windows, such as trying to see what Add-ons you have etc would not work]. I read about changing screen alignment to the top... I have one screen so the option does not exist. The above messages would not fix this problem. I searched hard and did find a solution in the end. I read stuff about removing Add-ons until the problem is fixed, but its simply not the case.
First of all open Firefox. next go to options: Help --- 'Restart with Add-ons disabled'. Tick the box for add-ons, restart firefox. Next go to Tools --- Add-ons. Next (In the Add-ons Manager' click on 'Plugins' on the left hand side pane. Look for the small blue writing that says 'Check to see if your plugins are up to date'.
Now notice it should say 'Missing Flash'. "For your safety, Firefox has disabled your outdated version of Flash. Please upgrade to the latest version". I followed this, reinstalled Flash and it now works as it always did, no problems. For people where the above fix didn't work, try this one out. Hope it helps people!

• I am unable to set waterfox as my default browser

My operating system is Windows 8. I have tried all that was recommended here and nothing works. When I try to set waterfox as my default browser, nothing happens. Every time I go online it tells me waterfox is not my default browser. This has only been in the last couple of weeks, so I am guessing it has something to do with the last update, but not sure. Either way, before the update it was fine, after the update it was not.

Waterfox is based on Firefox code, but there are differences. You might try their support site here: https://www.reddit.com/r/waterfox

• TS1398 why can,t my ipad  set my location

why can,t my ipad find my location at home with wifi only i need it  to use other apps

Your phone uses the cell tower and possibly GPS (depend on the phone) to determine location. These are not avilable on your Wifi iPad. It is forced to rely on databsed information about your internet priovider network, whiich can sometimes be incomplete.
One way to test this is to go out and connect to a public WiFi hot spot. These are usually well mapped. If your iPad can use location services there, that will be a pretty good indication its an issue with our connection at home (and unfotunately not one you can do much about).
Also, have you actually turned location services on for the iPad? Open the Settings app > Privacy > Location Services. You can turn it on for the device as well as determine which apps are permitted to use it.

• Can't set Safari as true default browser in windows xp

I'm running WindowsXP, and I installed the latest version of Safari. No matter what I do, it won't become the true default browser. I tried using the Safari preferences approach which only has one effect - it changes the icon at the top of the start button task bar to Safari. However, all my links from the desktop, from start...run <type url>, and from MS Outlook all lauch IE. I've also tried changing all the settings in the start...set program access and defaults and nothing will make Safari my default browser.

I don't have access to "Set Programs and Defaults" on my machine. Safari's ability to set itself as web browser, at least on Windows XP, seems to be broken. But I found a workaround. Install Firefox, let it set itself as default browser. Your hyperlinks and such should open in Firefox. Uninstall Firefox. Open up Safari, go to preferences and make sure Safari is set as default browser. Then, at least for me, the hyperlinks started opening in Safari. If you go into Safari and set Internet Explorer as default, you'll probably hose the setup and have to do it again.

• Why can't I install an app using my web browser?

Often I am at a computer where I can't install iTunes and I want to install an app on my iPad which is at home.  For my Android devices all I have to do is click a button on a web page to have it installed.  Why can't I do this for my Apple devices?  At the library, or a friends house, etc - I may find out about a cool new app I want to put on my device - why should I have to wait until I can go home to get my device, or go to a computer where I can install iTunes?  Web browsers are available so many more places than iTunes.  This sort of user-unfriendly-ness makes me want to move away from my Apple devices.

Apple does not allow that.

• Why can't Mail pass a URL to my Camino browser?

Is Mail inability to to pass an embedded URL to my 'Net browser related to Java permissions which never stay "repaired"?
I performed the typical remedy of using Safari Preferences to set the default browser. No improvement.
When a link is clicked in a Mail e-mail, the browser window becomes front-most, but no new window or tab opens.
This problem seems to coincide with Software Update installing Update 3 to Java 1.6. Since that installation, every run of Disk Utility to Repair Permissions yields the same log of Java-related files requiring repair.
Any suggestions are welcome.

More 'cutting and trying,' to borrow a shop worn fitter phrase.
Asking at Apple Support for a search of "rebuild Launch Services" yielded 150 documents to inspect, such as OS X 10.6 Server advice. Not much help.
And I am resuming where I started because the Safe Mode repair didn't last. The Java 1.6 permissions faults endure, though, so I again repaired permissions first, then used Onyx.app to rebuild Launch Services. That reinstated the ability of Mail.app to pass a URL link to my default Web browser, which is not Safari. In a matter of seconds, actually, to my smiling surprise.
Thus, OS function is as designed among applications, and I will wait a few more days to see whether the repair is more than transient.
===== Discussion =====
What might you learn from this incomplete experience?
1) Don't decide you must completely re-install all your applications or the complete Operating System because your particular system has developed a quirk.
2) Be ready to look outside Apple Support search, which consistently offers me tons of information, which I am expected to cull for the exact phrase I submitted.
3) In my situation, with a couple of third-party maintenance applications already on hand, I simply launched Onyx and explored its many features for repair, for upkeep, including the always-recommended repairing of permissions. I never needed to rebuild Launch Services before, but chose that task because of the comprehensive description of its effect and intended outcome presente by the Help window in Onyx.
You might say that I highly recommend Onyx, though I use few of its numerous capabilities.

It doesn't even try to open it with Aurora which is what I have set as my default browser in Xfce settings.
xdg-open http://www.google.com produces the same effect.
This only happens since I did a fresh Arch install a few days ago.

There are so many wonderful tools in the *nix community, xdg-open is really not one of them (IMO).  It is drastically overly complex - it's just a really convoluted shell script, open it up in an editor sometime.  This complexity leads to countless situations in which it will produce undesireable behavior.  I may be the least "unix-like" tool on my computer ... or at least it was until I removed it and replaced it with a much simpler version.
Admittedly this is the jumping-ship option.  Or really jumping-ship while tossing a molatov cocktail back to watch the whole ship burn ... but it works.  The skeleton of my replacement script can be found here.  Customize it to your tastes once, then plop it in xdg-open's place and your set.  Just keep a copy around to re-replace xdg-open if/when it gets updated by pacman.

• Certain websites require IE, and accidentally setting Firefox as my default browser has completely messed up my desktop shortcuts.

When I changed my default back to IE, the icons changed back, but everything still opens in Firefox... How can I get the shortcuts to open in IE? I've tried deleting the original shortcuts and creating new ones, but they still open in Firefox...
Thanks

Hi,
I'm not 100% sure I understand your problem. From what you've said, I think you're saying you've changed your default browser to Firefox, and the desktop icons all changed from the internet explorer icon (the blue e) to the firefox icon. You've changed the default browser back to IE, but the icons haven't changed back, and when you click on them they open in Firefox.
If that's the case, the problem is with your default browser setup. From what you've said, you've already set it in the browser similiar to the support article; for some reason Windows hasn't changed the default browser.
You could try (in Win 7) opening the control panel, then Programs ->Set Default Programs, and click on Internet Explorer in there, then "Set this Program as Default".

• How do I set up a different default browser other than firefox?

I would like my juno email page to come up everytime I open a new page but I can't seem to figure out how to change my default browser. Right now anytime I open a new tab the search engine is blank and it shows avg search engine. No matter what I put in the search engine after it goes to that page the search engine goes blank again. Because it keeps going blank it also keeps bringing you back up to it. So you might click on something and start writing and next thing you know you're writing in the browser again all because it disapears. It's very annoying. I want to get it off the avg search engine so I stop having these problems. I use to always have it open to my email start page so I would like to do that again or anything else if it will stop going to avg and it will keep what I ask for in the browser.

Normally, Firefox will fill the new tab page with 9 thumbnails for your frequently visited sites. You can change that to the Juno URL if you like. Here's how:
(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.
(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste newtab and pause while the list is filtered
(3) Double-click the browser.newtab.url preference and enter your preferred page:
* Page thumbnails (default) => about:newtab
* Blank tab => about:blank
* Built-in Firefox home page => about:home
* Any other page => full URL to the page you may want to copy this from another tab first for easier pasting
Press Ctrl+t to open a new tab and verify that it worked. Fixed?
* If Firefox refuses to save the change, check your Windows Control Panel, Uninstall a Program, for something named Search Protect and get rid of it.
* If Firefox ignores the change, one of your extensions may be overriding it. You can review, disable, and/or remove extensions on the add-ons page:<br><br>3-bar menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons > in the left column click Extensions
IMPORTANT: Your More System Details shows a user.js file in your profile. Firefox will use this file at startup to override your previous session settings. This article describes how to track down and remove the file: How to fix preferences that won't save.
Any luck?

Hi mcclausky, you may need to manually remove a policy setting from the registry. You also should scan for malware that might have created this problem.
This article lists scanning and cleaning tools other Firefox users have found helpful: Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware.
To check your Windows registry for policy settings that might affect Firefox or other programs, I suggest consulting a Windows forum or Microsoft's forums. For example:

• I can open Safari, Finder and Google Chrome ( my default browser) but they do not display on my iMac.  Evidently they are minimized somewhere but I can't figure out how to maximize them.  This has been a problem ever since I down loaded Mavericks.

When I open Safari, Finder or Google Chrome (my default browser) they do not displayanywhere on my iMac.
Tthey are minimized somewhere but  how can to maximize them.
I can't say for sure this is related to Mavericks but the problem began shortly after dowloading Mavs.
Any suggested fix?

Hope the following helps to make things clearer.
When I left click Safari or Google Chrome in my Dock, neither expands.  When I then right click wither one in teh Dock, a dialog box pops up  which gives me the option to close them, which implies that they are in fact open.
In other words, when I left click on Safari or Chrome in my Dock, nothing visibly changes on my Desktop.  Indeed, neither Safari not Chrome are listed as the active window in the menu bar.  If I do the same with Finder, at least Finder shows up as active in the menu bar but that's all.  Finder itsef is not accessible and so I cannot  use it.
On the other hand, I ahve no problem opening up Paralles 9 for Mac to access Windows/Explorer which is what I have done to send this note to teh Apple Communities Forum.  Nor do I ahve a problem opening up any of my other programssuch as Office for Mac, etc.
I suspect this may be mavericks related but can't say for sure.
Any help would be much appreciated.  Thanks.
