Why can't I back up to WD my bookworld using time machine?

I'm trying to back my iMac upto a WD My BookWorld hard drive using Time Machine, but it won't work. I get an error 2 message. Can anyone help please?

There are numerous reports about this online - seems very common.

  • How can you tell which files have backed up to external hard drive using Time Machine?

    Hello Mac Users,
I have Macbook Pro (early 2011) and recently purchased a WD My Passport for Mac external HD. I have completed a back up using Time Machine, however how do I tell what files actually were backed up? I have a ton of audio, documents and photos that I would like on there. Its a 2 TB HD, my memory is 750 GB... Im using 632. At end of back up, the drive still had 1.88 TB left. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It makes no changes to your data.
Please triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    tmutil compare | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
The command may take several minutes to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear below what you entered.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Don't post all the output; just read it yourself. Each line that begins with a plus sign (“+”) represents a file that has been added to the source volume since the last snapshot was taken. These files have not been backed up yet.
Each line that begins with an exclamation point (“!”) represents a file that has changed on the source volume. These files have been backed up, but not in their present state.
Each line that begins with a minus sign (“-“) represents a file that has been removed from the source volume.
Files that you’ve excluded from backup, or that are excluded automatically, are ignored.
At the end of the output, you’ll get some lines like the following:
    Added:
    Removed:
    Changed:
These lines show the total amount of data added, removed, or changed on the source(s) since the last snapshot.
Caution: Under some conditions, tmutil may falsely flag files as not having been backed up when in fact they have been. It can be confused by multi-linked files, or by files with a modification date earlier than the one in the snapshot. This will not be an issue for most users. If the results of the above procedure surprise you, inspect your snapshots directly.

  • Can I use a deskotp hard drive to back up a network hard drive, using time machine?

I have a WD desktop hard drive and a WD network hard drive. I use the desktop drive to backup two computers using time machine and the network drive to store shared information. I wanted to use the desktop hard drive to also back up this shared information on the network drive.
    Any way of doing this?

Sorry, no. I've only used CCC, but I don't know if will actually back up a NAS drive.
I kind of thought a network storage device would come with some sort of built-in back up system.

  • How to back up an external hard drive using Time Machine

I have a Macbook. I have iTunes. I have my iTunes folder and contents stored on an external (Lacie) hard drive. I want to be able to back up that external (Lacie) hard drive and my mac using Time Machine to a separate external hard drive. At the moment it is only my mac that is backed up, and not the Lacie.  How can I also back up the Lacie so that only the recently added iTunes content is added? Cheers.

You may consider reading the detail in what third-party clone utilities could
do in regard to a backup clone and then use their utility to update that clone.
Once the copy/clone is made (a bootable backup, btw) the same utility can
be used to update the clone. Not certain how it works, and am a bit behind
on making backup bootable clones of my several Macs as it is. I do a whole
backup clone, though a partial or update supposedly is possible.
SuperDuper or CarbonCopy, I don't remember if one of them or both, do this.
    Good luck in any event!

  • Back to lion after mountain lion using time machine backup

I have installed mountain lion 10.8.2 form the app store and i am not happy.  many of my apps seem to have dissapeared, and some games, such as the sims 3 refuse to run.  I also cannot find many of the files to uninstall and reinstall it properly, such as the files in the library folder, appear not to be there at all, even after a reinstallation.
I'm properly annoyed with mountain lion, and i would like to go back to lion.  I backed up my lion system using time machine to a usb drive.  My question is, is it possible to reinstall lion using this backup?  I have been reading a lot of conflicting information online about whether or not it changes the recovery partition back to lion or not, or even if it works at all.
Lion worked fine for me, Mountain lion doesn't, and I want it back!

    Thanks again,
It only shows one sparsebundle file (for my computer, my GFs also backsup to the same TC) and there is only one folder shown inside.
I did have some problems copying files in Finder from the mounted sparsebundle to my Documents folder because it was giving me "volume has wrong case sensitivity for backup".  However I searched for that error and found that you referred to one of your unix guys and said that I should use:
    ditto --noacl /path/to/source /path/to/target
This is working to copy the files that are there.  I know that because its in a .inProgress file something seems to have been messed up on the Time Capsule and some files maybe missing, even though i ran the backup a few times this weekend and it always said completed successfully
However the important files seem to be there and time stamps indicate yesterday's files are there and it seems everything from the last three months, so i hope i'm good
As for why it happened, i don't think i ever saw that error message before, but i have a feeling that its because i've manually stopped time machine from backing up quite a few times as i've been traveling almost three months straight and was tired of Time Machine complaining it hadn't been 'home' for a long time.
I'm really looking forward to Lion's local snapshots for the times when i'm 6-9 weeks on the road.  Of course i will follow your advise about also carrying an external hard drive since having the only two copies of files on the same hard drive is pretty scary.
    Thanks again for your help!

  • HT5139 I recently backed up my daughter's laptop using time machine.

I backed up her then (last month) new hard drive (the old one just died and was replaced under warranty with a fresh new drive) to an external drive using Time Machine (the back-up was done AFTER all the third party software was installed). Her new room mate fried the machine with an accidental coffee spill. She's now replace the laptop with a brand-spanking-new version (aaarrrrgggghh!). How does she retrieve her data and software (esp her brand-spanking new copy of Microsoft Office for Mac)? The system software was up-to-date before the spill, and the new laptop is, of course, up-to date.
Many mahalos and blessings in advance for your help. You guys are awesome!
    Tom

When the Mac is first started up either as a fresh and new system or after a recovery boot, wipe and restart sequence, OS X can migrate in the data from the old backup.   This process uses the Setup Assistant stuff when first installed, or uses Migration Assistant.   The difficulties here tend to arise if (when?) this migration is not started at first use, and the user's old and new files and tools have begun to diverge.

I somehow lost changes of in an Excel file.  Can I retrieve them with OS10.8.2?  or use Time Machine?  I thought the new autosave feature allowed me to get back to earlier versions easily?

  • Backing up an External Hard Drive using Time Machine

I have a brand new iMac 21.5" (late 2012) 3TB Time Capsule, and a 1 TB Western Digital Passport external drive. I use the Passport to share files between my iMac and MacAir.
I am using Time Machine to back up all my Apple Computers to Time Capsule.
I have formatted my Passport in Mac OS Extended Journaled, Encrypted.
I have the Passport set up to back up through Time Machine on the iMac.
It seems it backs up the entire Passport every time I hit Back up now onto the Time Capsule. But it only shows NOW as the only available revision in Time Machine.
It seems to be backing up the entire drive each time and not saving revisions. The only revision that is available is the NOW one.
I have disabled the security on the VCD portion of the Passport, it has Western Digital Software on it.
I have had the same issue with the Passport formatted in Mac OS Extended Journaled with no encryption as well. But I really need to passowrd protect the passport since I travel with it constantly in case I lose it.
Any ideas on how to get it to back up to Time Machine properly?

I backed up the iMac and Passport yesterday. It was successful. The issue seem to be incremental backups. It did not backup after my First original backup of the passport. The backups of the iMac seem to be working normal and at ever hour.
Here is a string of a Automatic backup this morning when the computer was "sleeping" with the passport connected. I did change the passport yesterday to Sleep to never before i plugged it in to my iMac using the software on my Mac Air.

  • Can't find 2011 Microsoft Office product key after using Time Machine

I just upgraded my macbook pro to a 512gb crucial ssd. In order for me to do this without downloading any other software off the internet, I bought an external drive and had time machine back up everything. I installed the SSD, started up the computer and had time machine do its thing and booted everything up onto the ssd. Everything went perfectly up, until I went to open up any Microsoft Office application because they required I put in the product key. The last time I put in the product key was when I first bought the macbook pro about 4 years ago(I installed everything using the disc). What I tried to do was boot the computer using the old hard drive and we have the same story.... I need a product key that I don't have. I even tried installing a product key finder and it found no Microsoft Office product key.
Tomorrow my plan is to use time machine to bring me back to the couple minutes before I setup the new SSD. Before I do that, I want to know what your opinions are on this matter or more importantly, what should I do?
    Thanks in advance.

Read the instructions that came with your PIN - they tell you how to get the Product Key from the MS Shop (I think it comes from there, anyhow!)

  • Why can't I back up my external HD to a Time Capsule using Time Machine?

I have 2 external Hard Drives attached to my Mac Air. I want to back them both up to my new 2G Time Machine, but here is the wierd thing. When I go to the time machine preferences both disks are shown in the exclude from back-up pane but only one can be removed (which i presume means it will be backed up)
the external HD that can be removed from the "exclude items from back up" is an iomega
the external HD that cannot be removed is a My Book.
Any thoughts on why this might be and what I can do to rectify the situation
    Cheers

Connect the drive directly to your Mac
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility
Click on the drive in the left panel. Info about the drive will be displayed at the bottom of the window.
To format the drive in Mac OS Extended (Journaled)......
First transfer the data that is currently on the drive to another drive for safekeeping as the new format will erase the drive.
Once the data is transferred, then in Disk Utility, click the Erase tab
Select Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as the format of choice
Click Erase the drive will be reformatted.
Transfer the data back onto the drive

  • Why can't i view my photos in iPhoto after a time machine restore?

    Hi,
I've just had to restore my entire system after a hard drive replacement.
Returned all my music, photos, documents etc back into the computer but none of my photos are in iphoto.
Why is this and how do i correct it?

Scavenge the library with iPhoto Library Manager independently of iPhoto (File ▹ Rebuild). Books, calendars, and slideshows won't be preserved.

  • IPhoto back up to hard drive - not using Time Machine

    Hi everyone,
I've gone through the support pages etc but can't seem to find a simple, easy to read and understand way of transferring my photos onto an external hard drive.
What I want to do is get all my iPhoto photos, onto an external harddrive, preferably keeping the folders that are set-up within iPhoto. Is there an easy way to do this? I know I can drop and drag each individual 'event' however it won't seem to move the folder with it - therefore I have to do each 'Event' individually, which will take hours.
    Any assistance is greatly appreciated!!
    Thanks,
    Andrew

Drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external hard drive
Or use a clone program like Carbon Coly Cloner or SuperDuper to do it and  update it

  • Using Time Machine to back up an external hard drive

    Hi,
This has probably been asked a lot but i'm struggling to find an answer. I want to back up my external hard drive using Time Machine but i'm not sure how to do it?
Is there a way that I can connect my external hdd and create a back up that is stored on my mac?
If this was possible, does Time Machine take a snapshot or does it duplicate the data (in other words would this take up a huge amount of storage on my laptop)?
I don't use Time Machine as I generally don't store anything on my laptop, but my external HDD holds all my photos.
    Any help is much appreciated.
    Thanks,

Sorry, but Time Machine can only backup a hard drive that is connected directly to your Mac using USB or Firewire.

Welcome to the Apple Support Community!
I understand that you are concerned about your data before reformatting the disk. Because you use Time Machine your information should be safe. Please refer to the attached article for information about what Time Machine backs up and how to restore from that backup.
