Why Can't I burn 8.5GB to an 8.5GB DVD-R DL?

Hi
I'm trying to archive some photos to DVD-R DL with a capacity of 8.5GB. So far I've managed to get about 7.7GB on to a single disc but can't seem to fit any more data than this onto any single disc. In fact I've tried to burn some discs (Direct from Tiger) with 6.5GB and I get a message telling me that there is "too much data" to fit on the DVD!
How can 6.5GB be 'too much' for a 8.5GB DVD?
Are the discs themselves at fault? I'm using Verbatim discs which I thought were a reputable brand.
Can anyone explain this?
Q

You should be able to get about 7.7 - 7.9 GB or so on the "8.5 GB" disc. It has to do with the way the disc manufacturers define a gigabyte (the hard drive manufacturers do the same).
Your 8.5 GB disc has approximately 8,500,000,000 bytes available on it. The disc manufacturers define a gigabyte as 1,000,000,000 bytes (1,000 x 1,000 x 1,000), so that's how they arrive at 8.5 GB. Computer operating systems define a gigabyte as 1,073,741,824 bytes (1,024 x 1,024 x 1,024) so when you divide 8,500,000,000 bytes by 1,073,741,824, you get 7.916 GB. Other formatting information and whatnot reduces the usable space further.
Verbatim is probably the top brand for the double/dual layer discs.
I'm not sure what you're burning onto these discs, but if you are creating DVDs to play in a standalone DVD player, you should be aware of the serious limitations that DVD-R DL discs have and DVD+R DL discs don't.

  • Why can't I burn a movie to play in a DVD player?

I made a movie in iMovie well it was more like a slide show I did with pictures and dropped some music in there However when I went to burn the the movie I got a message saying that I only can play this movie in a DVD/DVD rom will not play in a standard DVD player. Then I tried sharing the movie to iDVD but I still can't burn into DVD format for (DVD Player) Why do I have to select new themes in iDVD all I want to do is burn the movie that I created to play in a dvd player.
    Thank You

This feature creates a duplicate of your project onto
a CD or DVD ROM. It does not create a video DVD for
playing in a DVD player. Do you want to continue?
This is the message that I received in iMovie when I
went to burn to disc File>Burn to disc
There are two kinds of DVDs we can create from within iMovie.
    1. A DVD containing iMovie project files as Mac files. This kind of DVD functions a lot like a hard disk. The File > Burn to disk command burns the iMovie project onto the DVD. This project movie cannot be played on a TV.
Most iMovie projects are too large to fit on a single-sided DVD, which is limited to about 4.6GB of data. One hour of iMovie video requires 12GB of disk space.
    2. A DVD containing files encoded (converted) in the MPEG-2 format, which DVD players know how to play. This type of DVD can be played on a TV. When converting your iMovie project to the MPEG-2 format, iDVD compresses the video and audio so (about) two hours of video can fit on a single-sided DVD.

  • Why can't I burn 2 hrs onto a 120 minute DVD-R

I want to burn 2 1 hour shows onto a 120 minute DVD-R but it always tells me there's not enough room. Is this because of the menus? Is there any way to use iDVD to just burn my movie content without the menu, which I don't really care about that much.

    Hi
+I want to burn 2 1 hour shows onto a 120 minute DVD-R but it always tells me there's not enough room. Is this because of the menus?+
    Yes
+Is there any way to use iDVD to just burn my movie content without the menu, which I don't really care about that much.+
No - But select an as simple menu as possibly. I use "Brushed Metal" and no animation or
background music. This should give space for 2 x 58 minutes movies at least.
There are ways to make DVDs without menu but then the material has to be on a miniDV tape
and the use of OneStepDVD. But there are no 120 minutes tapes as I know of.
And I don't think that one can change tape after first one is done.
Second alternative is to use another program eg Roxio Toast™
This can squees in more onto a DVD (with a bit of quality loss)
Third way is to use a Mac with a Double-Layer DVD burner and DL disks.

  • Why can't I burn a DVD of photos from my iPhoto that will be viewable on a Windows computer?

Why can't I burn a DVD of photos from my iphotos that will be viewable on a PC using windows?

Darned if I know. What exactly are you doing?
The general answer is to select the photo(s) in iPhoto and export to a desktop folder (file menu ==> export). In the finder right click on that folder and burn to disk

  • Why can't I burn in iPhoto 9.5

Why can't I burn in iPhoto 9.5 this was a great feature that is now gone. The burn feature allowed me to back up with full event sections. Keeping everything organized.  Now all the DVD I burned prior don't show up in the SHARED folder in iphoto 9.5 Mavericks. You have to import blindly. Not Happy!!!!!

No, you don't import those.  Copy them to the Desktop, run the iPhoto Library Upgrader 1.1 on the library and open with iPhoto.  If you want any of the photos to be copied into your working library you can use the paid version of  iPhoto Library Manager to copy the desired albums or events across.

  • Why can't I burn a playlist in iTunes ver 11.0.4?

Why can't I burn a playlist with iTunes ver 11.0.4? I've done almost everything that I know except try the old ver 9.x.x, which nobody can find! Apple is no longer as good as when their mater was alive!!

Can you explain why it did not help?
    Can you select a playlist?
Can you right click on a playlist name?
Does a menu pop up when you right click on a playlist?
Do you see Burn playlist to disc when you right click on a playlist?
Are you told to put a disc into the disc drive?

  • Why can't I burn a movie longer than 60 min

Don't know how to be concise on all this but I'll try. I have a 5.50 hour sd video thought mac and imovie would be great, but so far I've spent 35 hours and only have 1 hour of video on a dvd.
One thing I don't understand is the entire movie is 7.8 gbyt (5.50 hours long) I CANNOT BURN THIS IDVD will not allow me to burn the 5.50 hours. I've called Apple support and been told only burn 1 hour "comeon Micosoft got you guys beat. I already edited and burned this entire video on a p.c. with the help of a third party software burning program called xdvd. I used IMovie and the xdvd for the burn. Another problem is space, the movie (after it becomes an event without any editing ) take up 103 gbyt WHY???? The raw movie is only 7.8 gbypt. My entire h.d. is only 320 so this becomes a problem UNLESS YOU CAN BURN THE SUCKERS.
Imovie is very complicated and is not straight forward, I don't know if it would help to use the "compression" I've tried to find this in a manual and don't know what its for?
Does anyone know good manual to buy for either imovie and idvd?? I WISH I HAD NEVER BOUGHT THIS MAC I bought strickly for editing my videos.

iDVD can burn up to 120 minutes as a DVD.
There are more DVD encoding apps that can make longer videos.
But 5.5 hours on one DVD will be very low quality.
I recommend you break it up into 2 hour parts and burn if you can.

  • Why can't I burn a backup CD?

Help! I can't burn a CD anymore. I try it in finder and get a can't communicate error...in iTunes...same thing...in iPhoto, (you guessed it...same thing)
I can read my created CD's just fine with no problems (those I have created as well as those from Apple [iLife 6.0, system DVD's that came with it etc.]). I have fixed permissions, erased and reinstalled 10.4 that came with my mini, and still have this problem.
The finder acknowledges a blank CD, but won't write to it...iTunes same thing...iPhoto the same thing.
Burner need replaced, or is it an OS problem? CD's bad (have sucessfully written to 35 of the 50 in the spindle Memorex CD-R Music)?

Launched Disk Utility, and repaired permissions. Put the Blank CD into the drive, and as always, gave me the option to open with Finder, iTunes, etc. I selected Finder, went back to Disk Utility and noticed something that I have not noticed before. With the MatshitaCD-RW CW-8124 selected, the info on the bottom of the screen in the second column is...
    Total Capacity: 0 Bytes
    Write Ability: Read Only (CD-R)
    Capabilities: CD-ROM, CD-R, CD-RW
    Partition Scheme: Unformatted
That doesn't look right to me...why would the capacity not be 700MB, and the write ability be read/write (or something to that effect?) Is there a setting that got changed that I am unaware of? Help? Advice?

  • Why can I not burn purchased tunes to CD for on the go?

Can someone please explain to me why I can't take a song I purchased and burn it to CD so I can enjoy it in the car? I like the idea of owning a iPod, but with children it's cheaper to go with a CD player that starts at 15 bucks than a iPod for 300.
Makes me wonder if an IPod could be offered to this guy...

I've used NeroExpress, Realplayer and Windows Player and it the don't recognize the m4p when I try to add it to my burn list.

  • Why can't I burn a CD from iTunes.

My iTunes on my macbook pro is not allowing me to burn a CD.  It begins the process then stops and gives me an "unknown error" message (-3).  I thought I had accomplished it by ignoring the "burn playlist to CD" command and instead dragging the songs to the disk. They seemed to burn and played fine on my computer, but the disk only plays a high pitched buzz when I put it in my stereo.  Have upgraded to Yosemite on the mac and to iTunes Version 12.0.1.26.  Anything I can do to fix it without wiping out my music library?

BTW have tried two kinds of disks, one kind of which I have a burned playlist from last year so I don't think it is the disks.

  • Why can't I burn a playlist in iTunes?

This is the first time I've tried to burn an iTunes playlist (of songs I ripped myself) onto a CD since I updated to iTunes v. 7.4.2
Intializing begins on the blank disc, then seconds later I get this error message: "The attempt to burn a disc failed. The device failed to calibrate the laser power level for this media"
I can still burn discs from the Finder with no problem, so I doubt that my drive is faulty.
I found a bizarre work around on another bulletin board somewhere.
It is: Go to System Preferences->International->Language
Drag any other language besides English to the top of the list. Then drag English back to the top of the list. Then restart.
After doing this, I was able to burn a CD in iTunes. But, only the one CD. Now I still get the same error message.
My info: 733MHz G4 PowerPC running Tiger 10.4.10 iTunes v. 7.4.2 Using blank Memorex CD-Rs

    It's not the discs.
I can drag the MP3s from a playlist in iTunes that won't burn onto my desktop and burn them to a disc just fine in the Finder.

  • Why can't I burn a movie to me external dvd drive?

I can share movies digitally to itunes, youtube, cnnreport, and vimeo. But can't burn to my external drive. What am I doing wrong, or is the macbook pro just that way?

Not if you have iDVD. You haven't said yet whether you do or not. If you do, here's how you can create a DVD from the new iMovie 10:
In iMovie 10 go to File>Share>File, choose the size (probably should choose either SD or Large) then click Next, give it a name, then click Save (remember where you saved it to).
Wait until the Activity Indicator shows that the sharing process is complete.
Go to iDVD. Go to File>Import>Video and select the file you created earlier. It will bring the video into your iDVD project. Prepare you DVD project and when you're ready, click the "Burn" button.
iDVD is no longer officially supported by Apple, but that doesn't mean you can't still use it. It's still a great option...possibly the best...for burning video DVDs on a Mac.

  • Why can't i burn my playlists to a cd

itunes will not let me burn a playlist to a cd where the tunes have a "cloud" beside them.  Says they are not on my hard drive.

    Hi jmc4903,
If a song has been deleted locally but still remains in iCloud, you will see the "cloud"   (download) button beside it.
You can still play the song with streaming, but you need to download it first to burn it to CD.
    From
iTunes 11 for Windows: Access all your music anytime, anywhere with iTunes Match
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ph12492
If a song is available in iCloud, it has a Download button Cloud with an arrow pointing down next to it.
To play the song, double-click it.
To download the song, click the Download button.
