Why can't I capture now in HD in FinalCut Express?

I shot film in HD format, but I can't get anything to capture that way. I am totally new to Final Cut Express. If i load it under Firewire basic settings, will it capture it as HD? will it affect quality???

The Final cut express seems to only be able to "capture now if it is on any preset EXCEPT the HD presets. I can get it to recognize the camera with basic fire wire, then change it to anything except the HD presets and it will capture now. Image appears the same, but does not appear HD quality.
I have this on rental and must give the camera back at the end of today. Help!?
I don't know anything about quicktime settings- when i open quicktime about quicktime says this:

Why can't I capture more than 6 min of 1 step IDVD?

My first capture was almost the whole tape, but now I can only capture 6 min plus at a time. I have deleted all of my other films etc, and emptied the trash, and still no luck?

Burning a OneStep DVD directly from a DV camcorder
You can skip the creative process completely and burn video footage or a movie directly from your DV camcorder to a DVD disc. When you insert the burned disc into a DVD player or a computer, the contents play automatically.
Autoplay DVDs are sometimes said to play in "kiosk mode" and are a good way to create demos or other presentations that play automatically and require no user interaction.
To burn a OneStep DVD:
Insert the DV tape with your movie or footage into your camcorder.
Connect the camcorder to your computer using a FireWire cable.
If your camcorder uses a dock, put the camcorder in the dock and connect the dock to your computer. See your camcorder's instructions if you're not sure how to do this.
Switch your camcorder to VTR, VCR, or Play mode. If necessary, turn your camcorder on.
Open iDVD and click OneStep DVD. Or choose File > OneStep DVD.
Insert a blank DVD disc into the optical drive when you are prompted to do so.
The tape in the camcorder rewinds automatically to the beginning. If you already set up the tape to start where you want, press the Play button on your camcorder as soon as it starts to rewind. This stops the rewind process and the next stage, video capture, begins.
A progress dialog keeps you informed about everything that's being done. You can stop the process at any point before the burning stage to leave the DVD disc untouched.
Creating a OneStep DVD will take longer than simply burning an iDVD project to a disc because the video needs to be captured first. Plan on your computer being tied up for a period of time. You may want to do this when you don't have work to do on your computer for several hours, perhaps before bed or before you leave for work, depending on the amount of video on your tape.

System crashes when i press esc to stop capturing now

I capture video using the Capture Now button and when I press the Esc button to stop the capturing, the Video deck doesn't respond and continues to play the tape. The program doesn't respond and I have to force Quit.
The External Maxtor 250 Gb hard drive then says that only 1,95 Gigs are left and after I restart, in the clips folder an unamed_av clip appeares. When i drag it into the trash and empty the trash the hard drives works ok and the 121 Gigs of space come back again.
What is going on?
Does anybody have the clue?
It is very annoying and every time I have to recapture.
It mostly happens with long clips.
I use a G5 Imac OS X version 10.3.5.
Final Cut Pro 5 HD.

1. verify the disk is not formated mc-dos. It should be formatted Mac OS Extended. Journalling can be either on or off - it does not seem to matter for most people.
2. If you can avoid it, do not use Capture Now. In the Logging settings- set an In point ~5sec from the beginning of the tape and an End point ~ 5 sec from the end of the tape then use Batch Capture.
3. If you can not avoid Capture Now, make sure the capture limit is set to 30 minutes or so and capture is smaller time chunks.

Why can I no longer import EDITED photo from my iPad to my Mac using Image Capture? This is farcical and a real problem having to email them individually to myself and is totally inefficient time wise compared to previously using image capture! Why change this when it was working well and very quickly until the latest change. Now I have to move files from downloads into an appropriate folder, after emailing each individual edited image to myself, then I have to open in Photoshop and rename the file. This is ludicrous and takes forever to do!

FCP4: Can't "capture now"

When I try to use "capture now" in FCP4, I get the "allocating disk space" message. I've noticed that many seem to have had a similar problem. But whereas everyone else who sees this message seems to end with the dreaded rainbow circle of confusion spinning into eternity and then discover gigantic phantom files, for me the "capture now" window just disappears after about 15 seconds and I end up right back where I started. The only evidence that I tried the procedure at all are small (roughly 200kb) files in the "capture scratch." These files do have the tell-tale av. I also have Norton Antivirus running, though I've also tried disabling it with no discernible difference.
What I find odd is that the last time I had a digitizing session (about two months ago) everything worked like a charm. As far as I can tell nothing has changed in my set-up. Now, it's not working at all.
I have four different scratch drives and have tried all of them, as well as the internal hard drive. I have tried reducing the limit of "capture now" to 1 minute. I've tried trashing the preferences, restarted the machine any number of times. The physical connections are all working, since I was able to preview the source through iMovie. (However, my digitizer doesn't import properly to iMovie, so I can't simply use that as a workaround.) I'm out of ideas. Does anyone else have some? (Please....)

I'm using FCP 4.1.
QT 6.5.3. Don't have a key for QT6 Pro. Tried to get one when I moved FCP from my desktop machine (and, yes, I did properly uninstall it from the old machine), but haven't figured out how to get a Pro key for QT6, now that QT7 is out. In any case, Pro can't be the problem since I haven't had it for a long time.
I'm in the process of unistalling all Norton software—though I'm not sure how to make sure I get everything. Having looked through a number of posts, others seem to have that problem as well. But I've had NAV running for a long time and it's never interfered with FCP before. (I won't be able to check until tonight when I get back from teaching.)
At least two of the external drives are HFS, as, of course, is the internal. (I inherited the other two and away from them so at the moment I can't check them.) In any case they all seem to behave in the same way.
Yes, I'm running 10.2.8. I'm of the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" school. Really, it's been very stable for me, and again it's never given FCP any trouble. But it's clear that I'll need to upgrade to 10.4 if I determine that the FCP 5/Studio will run decently on my machine.
For various reasons, primarily because it allows me to bypass you know what, I'm using an old Formac digitizer. I need to have this capability because I have to be able to extract clips (from my own library) for use in the classroom (which also explains why I only use FCP in spurts).

You can't view your back up files at icloud.com.
You can't view your camera roll and you can't view your Photo Stream files at icloud.com.
The icloud back up plan allows you to "restore" your iOS device from the files you backed up at icloud.com.

You need to ask Apple for assistance with getting back into your old ID. To do this, click here and pick a method; if that page doesn't list one for your country or you're unable to resolve this issue through the Account Security team, fill out and submit this form.

You likely had FF 3.6 instead of 6. At the moment, FF 4 is the latest version. If you wish to rollback to an earlier version, you can download your preferred version for your OS here:

FF 4 is the latest and greatest. If you are not experiencing specific problems that force you to roll back to an earlier version, you will probably want to stick with FF 4.

Examples of what is going on:
1. In Pages, Numbers & Keynote, when I go to the media browser the Audio section reads "Open iTunes to populate this list" even after iTunes has been opened, .xml file has been replaced/repaired, etc AND Photo section reads "Open iPhoto to see photos from your iPhoto Library in this list" even after iPhoto Library has been replaced and new default library created.
2. In iMovie, similar thing ... when I go to add photos or music to a movie the iTunes files aren't present and the iPhoto photos are missing with similar messages as in #1.
3. In iPhoto, similar thing ... when I go to add music to a slideshow it says to "Open iTunes to populate this list".
It is shocking to me that Apple would let something as simple as a pathway link to associated library files get this messed up on an upgrade, but what's even more surprising is that with the number of people who seem to be having this particular issue (and I can tell from all the research that I've done for weeks online that there are a lot of them) that there doesn't seem to be a single clear answer to fixing it anywhere on these community support forums. Most of what I've seen is rehashed advice from outdated issues. What I need is a simple answer to how do we get these programs to look for the correct location of the photo and music files because I sure can't seem to find any logical place to do that through the programs' preferences files or the system preferences window?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have the same problem on a new MacBook Pro. I have not been able to access the iTunes library from iPhoto since I got this computer. I looked in the Preferences file and deleted the com.apple.iApps.plist but there was no com.apple.iApps.lockfile so I just deleted the iAPPs.plist and rebooted the computer. Still no iTunes available in iPhoto.
All my music is in iTunes and plays. After reading the above I brought up Pages and I was able to access music and insert a track into a document.
Do you have any suggestions.

The new method for getting at the "option" symbols works fine in other places like spotlight, but now even the older "option+letter" doesn't work in most places.

Chrome doesn't support the new accent/diacritics/macron chooser. I'm not sure about other browsers such as Firefox. You can use the old Option+letter combination that Doug suggested. Hopefully updates will solve these little incompatibilities shortly.

Hi,
I had never heard of someone using the iPhone Number as the ID in the iMessages account in the Mac version.
i.e without adding an Apple ID
iMessages does allow iPhone numbers and mine lists mine.
I would try this.
Sign Out of the iMessages account and Quit Messages
On the iPhone in Settings > Messages remove the Apple ID
Set the iPhone to Airplane mode for a few minutes (to break with the Server)
On starting the phone up again check the iPhone Number is ticked for iMessages.
If it is add the Apple ID
On the Mac restart Messages
Add the Apple ID
At this point you should get a pop up or two saying the iPhone is using the Number and Apple ID.
Accept these and they get added to the Receive At list and Send From drop down.
