Why can't I connect my iPad to the Internet on a University campus?

I have already read some of the discussions regarding this problem, however is it something the university should be addressing or is it fixable by going through various settings within the iPad. Can someone who knows of a tried and tested solution please let me know, as an iPad at uni is of no use if it cannot connect to the uni wifi and access the Internet.

Are you in wifi range? Is school network open or password protected? If it's password protected do you know the password? Etc, etc

Is your iPad seeing the Router SSID (Network Name) in the list of networks? If so what happens when you try to select it? Are you asked for a password? If the network isn't secure then it won't ask you for a password and you should just connect.

You have an iPad 1. 5.1.1 is the last iOS version for that model.

What router are you using? make/model/version
What security type are you using? If it is WEP then symbolic (non hex) keys may be converted to hex in different ways by different operating systems. Is your laptop a Windows PC?
If you are using WEP then drop it and move to WPA2. WEP has been deprecated by the WiFi alliance since 2004 as insecure (it can be hacked in seconds).

I upgraded to ios8 and can no longer connect my iPad to the projector in my classroom.

You cannot connect the iPad to your computer like you would a hard disk. You get the Not Charging notice because the USB ports on your computer do not provide enough power to charge an iPad efficiently.
The best way to transfer video files from the computer is via iTunes on your computer. Here's the rub, though,
If your iPad 2 is still on iOS 5.1.1 or earlier you can use your G4 for the transfer if it is running OSX 10.5.8. Start iTunes on your computer, connect your iPad 2, select it in iTunes and select Video in the row of tabs on the right.
If your iPad 2 is running ios 6.0 or later you need iTunes 10.7 or later. iTunes 11 is the current version. Unfortunately these recent versions of iTunes require OSX 10.6.8 or later and these versions of OSX only run on intel macs. They will not run on a G4.
Your alternative then might be to email the videos to yourself. Or search the App Store for an app that will help in the transfer of videos.

Why Can't I connect my iMac to the DSL via the 5-posrt switch?

I have been using SBC DSL for about 4 years. 2Wire DSL modem and connect this iMac to the network through a switch (splitter) because I have other ethernet lines to a base station and to another computer. Recently I upgraded the OS from 9.2.2 by adding 10.3 and now the only way I can connect is with the iMac directly to the 2Wire modem. I've switched the ethernet cables, I've tried reinstalling everything again, but no luck. The network preference "sometimes" says I'm connected via an ethernet line but the dhcp is 10.0.xxx. So when I try to Renew...I never get a good DHCP connection.
If I was never able to connect via this switch box...I wouldn't complain, but this has made me rather nuts....when I connect this iMac directly to the 2wire modem, I can't use the other computers on line.
Hope someone has an answer.

OK, so it's been awhile since this was posted and I hope you've solved the problem, but on the chance you haven't you might try setting up a new location in the network preferences:
Open system preferences
Click on "Network"
Click on Location:New Location...
Click on Show:Network Port Configuration
Click and drag "Airport" to the top (you can uncheck any of these boxes also if you don't want to use them"
Click Apply Now
Click Show:Airport
Click TCP/IP
Normally Conigure IPV4 is set to "using DHCP"
Click on Apply now
This should work. You may have to use the Apple Menu to set your location - It's a pain but at least you'll be up and running

If you are in a wi-fi only area, then you need to join a wi-fi network. Does your office have wi-fi? Has the Admin given you the iformation to join the wi-fi network?
To join a wi-fi network...
1. Go to Settings/Wi-Fi
2. Tap Other...
3. Enter the name of your wi-fi network
4 Tap Security
5. Tap the type of security the network uses and return to Wi-Fi
6. Enter the password and tap Join

Went onto my phone's app store app to check for updates. Once I selected to update all, the attempted connection timed out, giving the error "Unable to connect to the App Store (Cancel or Retry)".
I've done a soft reset (power off by holding the top power key), made sure all settings are correct (no restrictions under general, etc.), and I'm connected to my Wifi network, so connection isn't the issue.
This has been ongoing for several hours now, though if I go through iTunes on my computer, the apps are able to update themselves there, leading me to thing this isn't an issue with an outtage, more an issue on my device.
Suggestions?

Interestingly, after syncing the phone to iTunes, then iTunes for updates, then phone to iTunes again, then transfer of purchases from the phone to iTunes and finally one last sync of the phone to iTunes, it's now working. Odd little hiccup!
