Why can't I connect to open wi fi?

I have been poring over the discussions trying to find an answer to the problem I am having, and some things come close, but no answer yet. I have no trouble connecting to my Airport Extreme base station or the Airport Extreme base station across the street, but any time I have my MacBook anywhere there is an open free wi fi access, it will not work. I get a good signal (3-4 bars), Internet Connect says I am connected, but when I try to access the web or check email, I get a message saying I am not connected. I have run Network Diagnostics over and over again with no luck. The most frustrating thing of all is that I was recently on a vacation with relatives and staying in a condo with free, open wi fi. Their Windows PC's had no trouble connecting. Needless to say I didn't make any converts to the Mac that week! This is a new MacBook (three months old).

I finally took the MacBook into the Apple Store. Of course it connected fine in there! At their suggestion, we tried setting up a new user, deleting preference files, nothing has worked. I am going to do an Archive and Install to see if that works this weekend. That was the other suggestion from the guy at the Genius Bar. This is driving me CRAZY! I gave my old iBook to my Mom to use when we got this one. I'm tempted to swap with her and get the old 'Book back. It makes me ill to see all of my PC people effortlessly connecting to any open wi-fi and me with my new MacBook not being able to despite a 3 and 4 bar signal!

If you do not have an iPad with 3G cellular service, you can only connect to the internet when you have access to Wifi. Wifi is not available everywhere, but there are places that do offer free Wifi service, such as Starbucks, Panera Bread, the Airport, etc. When you are at a location which offers free Wifi access, you have to join their network, which is usuall nothing more than touching a connect option that should automatically pop up, when you open Safari on your ipad.

Some things to try first:
1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
5. Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
    •    Launch Settings app
    •    Tap on Wi-Fi
    •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
    •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.

On your iPad, go into Settings --> Wifi. Does your iPad indicate your device is on a wireless network?
If so, can you verify your wireless network is correctly functioning?
If not, connect your device to a wireless network. If the iPad refuses to connect to a wireless network. Go into Settings --> General --> Reset --> Reset All Network Settings. If done correctly than you will NOT loose any data while reseting your network settings. After the reset, go back into wifi settings and attempt to connect to a wireless network.

When using my PowerBook G3 Pismo, running 10.4.11, I have no problem connecting to any WiFi that does not require a password.
But I get the same error message when a password is requested. I have removed the password requirement from some of my WiFi options, and make the connections and internet functions correctly.

I decided to return to i studio to ask them the reason, but when I gave my IPad to the staff, he just put his wifi password, then the iPad can work as ussually , then he told me maybe my Internet problem, but I can connect to surb my web, I can do everything except to connect the iTunes.
Then after I call to the wifi provider company, they ask me o set up all the proxy then now I can connect to iTunes store as normally.

You say "I am paired" but unless you are a Bluetooth device yourself, what device are you trying to send files from? A computer? A mobile phone? If the latter, which one?
To send files Mac to Mac, Bluetooth Sharing needs to be enabled on both Macs in the Sharing system preferences pane.
If you are trying to send files between a Mac and an iOS device via Bluetooth, then that won't work as iOS devices don't have that functionality.

the iPhone uses active sync. Desktop clients do not. Desktop clients use another exchange protocol (which i can't remember as i'm not a microsofty).
Just because you can access via active sync doesn't mean you can access it by other methods, and vice versa.
