Why can't I double-click to minimize all App windows to the Dock in Yosemite?

I am running the Yosemite 10.10.3 (14D131). I have checked the Dock preference 'Double-click a window's title bar to minimize', but not all App windows will actually minimize to the Dock - why? Apple Apps should behave consistently.
These apps behave as expected:
Safari
Mail
Terminal
Preview
Pages
Messages
FaceTime
App Store
iBooks
TextEdit
Terminal
These apps DO NOT behave as expected:
Reminders
Notes
Calculator
iTunes
Contacts

Not a feature. In fact, there's no way, using just Illustrator, to extract embedded images. But then, it's only at version THIRTEEN! I save a PDF using no downsampling or compression, then open in Photoshop. When you open a PDF in Photoshop you are given the option to rasterize any pages or extract images embedded in the PDF. Choose Images then select the images you want. Save as TIF or PSD and re-link in Illustrator.
Yes, it is stupid.

Why can't I double click column seperaters to auto resize in OSX Lion?

No idea, why you are so aggressive.  We are only all trying to help each other.
You didn't mention anything about Cover Flow in your orignal posts, did you?  I am neither content or not content using Column view.  This has nothing to do with me!  I was simply trying to help you by suggesting that Column view works.
By the way, I am not wrong.  Column view resizes perfectly well when the vertical separator line is double clicked.

  • Why can't i double click to open

I'm sure i could just double click on a folder in finder and it would open up. Now I've upgraded to Yosemite I can't do it, I have to tap, then select open in new tab. ITS SO ANNOYING!!! Surly theres a way (and i don't want to keep on pressing command and the down arrow either)

I can't actually double click anything in finder anymore and i know i could that before the update.

  • How Can I Simulate Double-Clicking A File To Open It In The Default App Without Installing Default App?

I have an app written with Visual Studio 2013. The app has code for opening a file using the standard OpenFileDialog and also has code (AutoOpenFile()) for opening a file when a user double-clicks on a file that is handled by the app. I have not yet created
an installer for the app, so I won't be able to test it's AutoOpenFile() code...unless there is a way to simulate the process of auto-opening the double-clicked file without actually installing the app on my PC. Anyone?

Thanks for your reply, Wyck. I already have the necessary code in my app for opening a file when I double-click on it. The problem is that the app is not currently installed on my PC. Until I do install it, is there a way I can test-run that code
by double-clicking on an associated file?
You lost me at: you want to test-run code that is not on your PC.
    O_o
You want to double-click a file, and then...what do you want to have happen?  You want to run...something...that is not on your PC??
The "simulation" is to launch your app from the command line and pass in the name of the file you wanted to simulate a "double-click" of.
Regardless, you cannot get the shell to have a double-click of a file cause your application to launch unless you modify the registry to do so.  (This is tantamount to "install" to me.)
In the spirit of continuing to be helpful, though, I'll assume that this is what you want to do and I'll show you how to get it done with the least amount of tampering with your registry.
Here are minimally invasive registry modifications you need to make to get it to launch a program when you double-click your file.  It's pretty small.
    EXAMPLE ONLY:
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.wyck]
    @="Wyck.Document"
    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Wyck.Document\shell\open\command]
    @="c:\\windows\\system32\\notepad.exe \"%1\""
[You have to save the above with your appropriate modifications to a file with the
.reg extension (e.g.: test.reg) and then you'll have to double-click the test.reg file to "merge" these settings into your registry.]
The example above registers a file extension called .wyck and assigns a completely arbitrary class name to it called
    Wyck.Document.
Then it associates a shell open command with the Wyck.Document class that causes
notepad.exe to be passed the filename of the file you double-clicked (that's what the
%1 does).  You are welcome to replace all the specific names with your own extensions and class names and replace notepad.exe with the path to your (test) executable.
This executable will be launched, but not with a debugger attached.  To facilitate debugging it, you'll want to temporarily add some code to your program to pause when the program launches, possibly by showing a message box right at the very beginning
of your main function that says "attach debugger now" so that you can attach a debugger to the process that was started by the shell, and then dismiss the message box and continue debugging.
When you are done with your testing, you can simply manually delete those two registry keys using
    regedit.

  • Why can't I double click to open embedded images?

I want to put this topic in the Features request, but I'm putting it here first to check that I've not made a silly mistake.
I'm slowly getting the hang of Illustrator. But it often feels like I'm learning how to do things in a non-intuative way.
Take Embedded images. Illustrator loves them. I guess its because it doesn't have a 'Collect for Output' feature - but don't get me started on that! Anyway, my point is when I receive a file with embedded images and I want to open those embedded images, my INTUITION tells me to simply double click the image and wait for it to open in Photoshop. After all, aren't Adobe always telling us that Illustrator and Photoshop are seamlessly integrated in ways Freehand can only dream of?
So, I double click and nothing happens. I then double click the thumbnail picture in the Image box. Up comes a Link Information box. Lots of facts and figures except how to open it. Then I click on the blue underlined word saying 'Embedded'. More options here - but none of them any good because I haven't got the original on my system.
To cut a long story short, I finally discover that by copying the embedded image, then opening Photoshop, then opening a new document, then pasting, then clicking the transform tick box, then flattening - I can get to see the embedded pic.
No nifty link back though. If I want to update the image in Illustrator I have place it, scale it position it and delete the original. I tried Relink - but it pasted the new pic at 90 degrees to the original!
So how about it? Double Click Embedded images to open in Photoshop? Change them and they automatically update in Illustrator? Am I asking too much? Am I missing the point?

Not a feature. In fact, there's no way, using just Illustrator, to extract embedded images. But then, it's only at version THIRTEEN! • HT1338 Question: Why can't I double click and open anything on desktop?

I can double click on anything on my desktop. It will highlight it but will not open it. I can open applications from the dock at the bottom
and if I drag some things there they will open. I cannot open a program first from the dock, highlight the document on my desktop that uses that program, then open a document or photo. Inciden tally my mouse is also wildy erratic and will very quickly clear anything open on the desktop to the sides. I cannot delete anhything that comes in mail, and I can't delete or amend or aff any new or old Contacts. Any ideas?

If you select one of these files on the Desktop and perform a Get Info ( ⌘ I ) and then open the Sharing & Permissions section, is your account shown as having Read & Write access? Are there other accounts listed for the file? Does the same issue occur with files in your Documents folder?

A possible cause is security software (firewall) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process.

  • On restart why do all app icons in the dock, except Apple apps, disappear? OS X (10.8.5)

Have tried several suggestions found in the support community, some suggesting to delete a preferences file which I cannot find. I have iMacs at work and at home., but I am having this problem only on one of the Macs.

    Back up all data.
In the Finder, hold down the option key and select
    Go ▹ Library
from the menu bar. From the Library folder, move the following items to the Trash, if they exist:
    Application Support/Dock
    Caches/com.apple.dock
and move the following items to the Desktop:
    Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.dock.*.plist
    Preferences/com.apple.dock.db
    Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist
Here “*” stands for a long string of letters and numbers.
Next, triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    open $TMPDIR../C
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing the key combination command-V. A folder should open. Inside it there may be a file named "com.apple.dock.iconcache". If there is, drag it to the Trash.
Log out, log back in, and test. If you still have the issue, put the items on the Desktop back where they came from and post again. Otherwise, delete the items.

Nothing was "fixed." A feature that previously existed was left out of the rewrite of the app. Maybe the five people that knew it existed didn't provide enough feedback.

  • I can't double click to collapse firefox window into the dock

I'm running OS X with the newest Firefox (the Yahoo Edition.) Suddenly, double clicking in the top of the window no longer collapses it into the dock. I've tried repairing permissions and dumping the Firefox prefs to no avail. I just did a Firefox security update a few days ago and I'm wondering if that has anything to do the problem.

I have this problem too (Mac Firefox 21) but only when using a custom theme. When using the default Firefox appearance, I can still double-click to minimize Firefox to the dock. I wonder if all the other people who've complained of this problem were also using a custom theme?

  • ITunes 11 double click to minimize

    Hi guys,
Overall iTunes 11 offers some nice improvements, and the ability to have a bit of the 'legacy' functionality in allowing the sidebar to still be used etc. is great. Very glad I can configure it.
However.... I can no longer double click anywhere in the title bar or header for iTunes to minimize the application which is extremely frustrating as it breaks the pattern from EVERY other OS X application where you have the option to double click to minimize, and to minimize into the application icon.
Does anyone know how to fix this, or is this not possible until Apple puts this feature back in?

I hope it's soon they fix it too - annoying me every time I forget and have to minimize it another way.
The default configuration of the machines in the Apple store is kind of annoying. I hope it wasn't an oversight or a cue towards simplification. In the store... the icons on the dock have no zoom at all, so one of the 'cool and defining' differences in OSX (IMO) is the dock behaviour and design with reflections etc. The applications all minimize to the right on the dock, instead of into their application icons and right click on the mouse setups is turned off, and the icons look messy on the right until you turn documents/downloads into display as folder. Makes things seem like a fisher-price toy a little bit until you customize it properly. I know a few people who weren't really liking OSX until a few of these options were turned on, and made a huge difference for them.
Anyways long story short.... let's get the functionality back Apple!
