That is a problem caused by Microsoft or one of their recent updates. Here is the solution
in the Windows Explorer address bar type %APPDATA%
on the right-hand side double-click on the Microsoft folder
now look for a folder named Crypto; delete it, or rename it to something like Crypto-old

I am not able to download adobe reader X. It started when I recently could not open a PDF file. I unistalled Adobe XI and tried re installing it and now it says my code doesn't match. How can I fix this problem.

This seems to be caused by a recent Windows Update. Unfortunately I cannot tell you which one.
Make sure you have the latest update that was released yesterday installed; it replaced a bad patch from earlier this month.

Sorry, I am not an expert.
I would try downloading and running Windows Installer Cleanup as others suggested. I ran it successfully on my W7 machine, but it did not solve the problem of downloading Adobe Reader 9.3.
What did was detailed in my other thread (post): http://forums.adobe.com/thread/626379?tstart=30 (this should take you the post directly)
Please note that you must be logged in to your computer as an administrator or with administrator rights before taking the steps in that post. After you complete the steps and log back in under the new (upper) administrator level, you may be able to load Reader 9.3 (it worked for me)

I don't know what kind of plug-in I need to activate. In fact I don't even know what a plug-in is. All I know is that when I attempted to download some photos and a document, both from an outside source, a box appeared saying "missing plug-in." You may be confusing Adobe Flash - which is known for security issues - with Adobe Reader perhaps.
I think you are safe to download Adobe Reader. Always update the software when updates are available since many updates do include security fixes as well as bug fixes and any new features that have been added.
I have always had some version of Adobe Reader on all of my Macs and have never had any virus, Trojan or Malware on any of them.

The download does not install Flash. You should find the downloaded file in your Downloads folder. Double-click on the .dmg file then double-click on the installer icon once the disc image has been mounted.
