Why can't I edit or delete Address Book "On My Mac" or sync with iCloud?

Why can't I edit or delete Address Book cards on my Macs, now that I've migrated to iCloud?  I can edit/delete if I go to iCloud, but the changes don't sync with my Macs.  What's happening, and what's a solution?  Just wait for Apple to fix a bug?

On your mac, if your look at the left panel of the Address Book, you'll find general categories of "iCloud" and possibly "On my mac" - if you have contacts in the latter, then they are only local to your mac, they are not shared with iCloud.  If you don't have an "iCloud" category, then your mac(s) is not set up of iCloud.  Go to system preferences and look in iCloud.  Is the mac signed into iCloud, are contacts turned on for syncing?

  • Address book on MacPro doesn't sync with iCloud

I have put contacts in my address book and it's not being sync to my other devices or the iCloud.
I tried to uncheck the addressbook in icould on my mac and then rebooted and checked it again. Still won't sync.

First check that all your settings are correct, that contact syncing is checked on all devices (system preferences > iCloud on a mac and settings > iCloud on a iPhone, iPad or iPod).
Make sure the contacts you are adding are added to your 'iCloud' group and not an 'On My Mac', 'On My Phone' or other non iCloud group (you can do this by checking in groups), non iCloud contacts will not sync.
If you are sure that everything is set up correctly and your contacts are in the iCloud group, you might try unchecking contact syncing in the iCloud settings, restarting your device and then re-enabling contact syncing.

  • How can I recover my accidentaly deleted address book?

I was working in my address book this morning and selected a contact that I wanted to delete. When I pressed the delete button, all of a sudden my entire address book dissapeared. I'm fairly sure I only selected the specific contact, but apparently somehow my entire address book got deleted with it.
I can still see the two default address books of thunderbird on the left side, but they always have been and still are empty. The third address book (the one that I've been using the past years), is completely gone.
I have tried to recover the address book in multiple ways:
    - looked in the recycle bin of my computer and of thunderbird, but there was nothing to be found in both of them
    - I used the 'undo' button about 4 to 5 times, but nothing happened unfortunately. Ctrl+z didn't give any response as well
    - I waited with closing thunderbird, untiI I looked up my Thunderbird profile in user/appdata/roaming/thunderbird/profiles/****.defaul. I copied the abook.mab file to another directory, closed thunderbird and restarted it. Unfortunately this didn't help either.
    - I've also tried to recover any deleted files on my entire computer using Recuva software. I haven't been able to find anything related to the address book thought.
Is there any way to retrieve/recover my thunderbird address book?
I haven't been able to find a good solution online as of yet. But I figure it can't just be completely gone after I've clicked teh delete button by accident, right?
I'm using thunderbird 24.4.0 on Windows 8.1. Currently I am not using a tool to synchronise the address book to my google account, because I'm working with the maillinglist and I haven't found a way to synchronise them fully. So there's no recent backup of the address book unfortunately.
I really hope you can help me with this. Thanks in advance!

Thanks a lot for your fast reply!
I've tried both options you gave, but unfortunately didn't manage to restore/retrieve any data from the file. The MoreFunctionsForAddressBook add on is very user friendly however and easy to work with.
I also found a few threads that explain that it is possibe to open the original abook.mab file in a text editor and delete some entries in it, to 'turn back' the command that said to delete the addressbook in the first place.
This is the one I've found and tried to follow: http://www.pirules.org/blog/?page_id=312 and
I've played around with it a bit, and managed to retrieve the specific address I was meaning to delete at the time the whole addressbook got accidentaly deleted. I didn't manage to retrieve the full addressbook though, mostly because I have a hard time understanding the code language that is used in the file....
Could this be an option for me? And if so, how do I determine which entry to delete from the file and which one to leave alone?

  • Address Book "On My Mac" & Exchange Sync

Exchange has been set up for a while to Sync with address book. I noticed that a friends birthday was not appearing in iCal when it should.
Checking the settings in iCal, I noticed that it's taking the birthday's from my address book "On My Mac" and not the exchange account that I use as default.
There are settings to sync with MobileMe, Google and Yahoo!, but not Exchange. Exchange seems to be just all on it's own with nobody to play with.
Short of manually copying all my contacts from "Exchange" to "On My Mac" every time I was to sync, is there a way to automatically sync the two accounts?
I've done a search of the support, but cant find anything relating to this question. If you know of a thread, please paste it for me.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've done some trawling and it seems likely that Address Book 4 synced perfectly. Does anyone know why it wont with Address Book 5?

  • Since I moved to iCloud I can't Edit or Delete Address Book Contacts using my MacBook Pro

Is not funny at all, everything was fine using Mobile Me but since I switch to iCloud I can't Edit or Delete my Address Book Contacts using my MacBook Pro or my MacPro.
In my MacBook Pro, i open Address Book and on the left I have te list of all contacts, on the right the selected contact informations, below I only have "Add Contact" or "Share", my friend have "Edit" instead of "Add Contact".
If I click on "Add Contact" this is the result:
Are you sure you want to import 1 card? 1 card is a duplicate and will be updated.
Everything fine using my iPhone or the website.
    Apple, what's going on?

Here is some information and instructions from Apple:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3998
Please note that iCloud is geared towards being an instantaneous (and in some cases temporary) parking place for various things with iDevices; the access and useability from a computer is more difficult and, for most things, has to be done via the website icloud.com.

  • Why can't I edit all of address information for Siri to use?

I have been playing around a lot with Siri lately.  Unfortunately she doesn't seem to want to play with me.  I have been trying to find a way for Siri to remind to complete a task after I leave from a location other than my home or work address.  At first I realized that I did not have other addresses other than my home and work address stored under my contact information in my address book.  After I tried to tell Siri to remind me to complete a task after I left my gym for example, Siri told me that this information was not entered and that I should edit my information which I tried doing.  The problem is that I was not able to change the name of the address information in my address book from "other" to "gym".  Is there anyway to get around this?
I have also noticed that when I ask Siri to remind to complete a task after I leave a location (e.g. "work") she reminds me to complete the task when I arrive at the location.  There must be a way for Siri to distinguish between me arriving at a location and me leaving that location.
My final gripe is that Apple does not have anywhere for me to submit feedback on Siri or its Maps services.  I do not understand how Apple expects to improve these two critical areas of their user experiences without allowing people to provide suggestions for improvement.

So I read through some feedback posted on here and was able to answer my first question.  The second issue remains a problem however.

  • Why can't my contacts in my address book be printed in "alpha" order?

After over a month and endless hours contacting Apple, I am now informed that, because of the operating system, it is impossible to print alphabetically from contacts.  The proposed solutions don't work for me - printing from the clould (I can't access all the info in contacts) and exporting the info in contacts to another system (at least a two step process).  One important reason for purchasing a MacAir was for this feature.  Really regret my purchase and Apple's inability to address the problem.

    Thanks BoPeep45...
not only do I love your suggestion but I love the ostrich on your home page..... I also teach a class and this is the quickest way of printing out a sign-in sheet.  I do it with a little more effort but this is extremely quick;  Also as a side note, if you want some of your other address book comments to show up you can preset the columns' name with the "exact" field name and it will plop in that information also, ie address or notes... I didn't check on the picture but I know the other fields do show up.
Apple really needs to fix this problem.  I really don't like the extra step of going to icloud.com to print out things alphabetically it's so inconvenient.  Tim Cook may not see it as a problem but I'm sure Steve Jobs would not tolerate "half-a**ed" software on his operating systems...I just read some terse comments he made to his staff when another program was not up to his expectations (Mobile Me) and that is why he PERSONALLY presented iCloud to the public  He expected perfection and when he didn't get it, he let the hammer fall.
This has been a problem ever since Mountain Lion came out and they are totally ignoring it.  I, and I'm sure many of you, have reported this "bug" to them to fix over the past year and nothing has been done.  It should be an easy fix.
    Thanks again for your suggestion....

  • Why can't I update contacts in address book

I cannot update contacts in my Address book. The command "L" does not work, and the menu item is grayed out. Can do it on the iPhone. Not yet transferred to the cloud, as there are 5 computers on the samd account, and only 3 of them have the Ram required for 10.7. Ordering the Ram today or tomorrow.

  • Accidentally deleted address book 'On My Mac'

I had brain **** yesterday and accidentally deleted the information for the address book account "On My Mac". I have scoured the web but cannot find a way to restore the account information.
The contact book is still working and I can create new entries for a Google address book that is still there. When I go to the Accounts and select 'On My Mac' it's empty. See below
Can anyone help to restore this default address book?
    OS X 10.9.2
    Macbook Pro Retina

The On My Mac Address Book does not sync to anything. You can move items from the On My Mac Address Book to one of the Address Books like Google, iCloud, Yahoo, AOL.
Let's say you have an Exchange, iCloud, Google and Yahoo account and select to sync their Address Book with Contacts.app. While you would be able to see each listed they are independent and do not sync to the other address books. You can move items from one to another but they only sync to their respective Address Books.
I see one of your Google accounts is inactive. Select that account and enter your password or two-step authentication code.
If there are no contacts in On My Mac it won't show up. Apple chooses not to show items if there is nothing in them. For example in Mail, if you have no Draft messages you won't see a drafts folder until you actually save a message. Once it's added it will stay there even if there are not messages. Same for Flags, VIP, Spam etc.
    Does this help?

  • IChat deleted Address Book contents during .Mac sync?

This evening, my iChat app froze during a .Mac sync. I gave it a minute or two to try to "thaw", but since that didn't happen, I force quit it. When it restarted it, all my contact names were gone, reverted to their regular AIM names.
Of course, this was after iChat give me the initial setup windows, as if the computer was brand new.
It turns out that my entire Address Book contents had been wiped, the only address card present being the info I supplied about myself in the iChat setup dialogue!

    First, Close Address Book
    Open ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook. (~ = your home folder)
    Create an archive of AddressBook.data.previous
Then, log into .mac and see if your Addresses are still available in your online Address Book. If so, open your dot mac preferences, go to Advanced, and do a "Reset Sync Data" allowing your .mac address book to overwrite your local address book.
If your Addresses are not available online:
    Open ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook. (~ = your home folder)
    Drag AddressBook.data to your desktop.
    Rename AddressBook.data.previous to AddressBook.data
Open Address Book. If you're lucky your addresses, as they were prior to your last edit, should be back.

  • How do I set up iCloud without duplicating my contacts in address book?--I'm not syncing with iTunes.

I'm going around and around in circles trying to set up iCloud on my iMac and iPhone. The contacts are not duplicated on iCloud/contacts, or my iPhone, but they are duplicated on my iMac in address book. Sync calendars and Sync contacts are unchecked (turned off) on iTunes. I just went through my address book on the iMac and deleted all the duplicates, but they were all added back immediately. I've been trying various solutions from the forums. I tried merging duplicate contacts--didn't work. Help!

Okay--I'll try this, but before I do, can you answer another question?
When I deselect the box next to contacts on system preferences > iCloud, I get a scary air message that says, "Do you want to keep a copy of your iCloud contacts on this Mac? If you don't keep a copy, iCloud contacts will be removed from this mac but will still be available on other devices using iCloud."
My mac has all of my contacts, but there are some that are not on my iPhone (Chistmas card list). Will I lose the contacts that are not backed up on my iPhone?
Should I select "Delete from Mac" or "Keep Contacts"?
Similar air message with calendars, so I assume whatever I do with contacts will be the same as calendars.
Thank you so much for your help--this has been so confusing for me!! I"m sure this has been discussed over and over and I looked through the messages to find a solution, but just got more confused.

  • Address Book Associates Field does not sync with iPhone

Apple went to the trouble of getting custom field names in the Mac OS Address Book to synchronize with the iPhone (which is wonderful), but they left one field 'unsyncable'; the associates field. If you list a contact's manager name, spouse name, child name, etc. in Address Book, it does not sync with the iPhone (OS 3.0.1) 'Phone' application. This is very useful (and embarrasment-preventing) when needing to remember the name of a contact's manager, wife, child, etc. Does anyone have any idea why Apple left this out of the sync? Certainly it couldn't have to do with saving memory...

Oh yes! i have this same problem - i have tried emailing Apple Customer Support but they were unable to help me. They advised me to speak to technical or raise the issue on the Apple Support board (but someone already has!)
so if someone can help us both out here with how to sync additional field information added on Address Book on Mac to then sync all this additional information to iPhone, we would be greatly appreciative!!Thanks,
    Mark

  • Address book gives no option to sync with gmail contacts

On my iMac, there is an option to sync with google contacts. On my MacBook there is not. How can I get the gmail contact option on my 2 year old MacBook

I'm guessing your iMac is new enough to be running Snow Leopard and the MacBook is not, if so, install Snow Leopard on the MacBook.

  • Disappearing address book on my mac when connected to iCloud

I do not necessarily understand how to phrase things but let me give you steps.
    MacBookPro/Lion and iPad v1
    have Time Machine backups
Activate iCloud on the Mac and within 4 seconds all the address items disappear
Log in to iCloud in Safari. Lo and behold my address book is empty.
Restore address book on the MBP, log into iCloud and intentionally deselct "contact" but things still disappear.
My impression is the orientation is mixed up.  The MBP is "master" and feeds the cloud in order to provide the same to the iPad.
OT: The situation started while attempting to help a friend who had a bad Win7 to iCloud experience. She ditched Win 7, went to an iMac and when migrating to her cloud account we realize we still have the mess from last fall. Trying to figure out how to "erase" the trash and add fresh content.

I restored my phone to factory settings. I chose to restart it as a new phone to avoid the problem I was having. Now when I synced with Facebook it doesn't have any of the phone numbers for the contacts. HELP ME GET MY NUMBERS BACK PLEASE

Are the contacts on your phone to be the same as the contacts in your computer? if yes do following:
In iTunes/Preferences/Devices   check the "Prevent iPods.... from syncing automatically".
Connect your iPhone to iTunes by cable or set sync by WiFi on the Summary page.
Then on the Info Page scroll down and check "contacts" under the "Advanced" heading.
Then click "sync" in the right bottom of the page.
