Why can't i edit song info on iTunes

I just installed itunes 9 on to my new computer. All my music/movies is on an external hard drive. After importing every thing i noticed i could not edit info for ANYTHING. The files are not read only and i've check the permissions and that is fine.

Would you care to share it with the rest of us? It's driving me crazy that there are about 3 of the last 25 songs I added that I can't edit the artwork or anything for!

  • Why can't I edit the info in iTunes?

All of a sudden, I can no longer edit info in iTunes.  I use Windows 7 and have iTunes 10 version3.0 that I just updated.  However, it was doing this with the 2.0 Version as well. I had hoped the 3.0 would resolve it and it hasn’t.
I did not install anything new on my computer.  I just turned it on and this happened.
I followed some advice already given: made sure my Windows was updated, I checked to see if I have full authorization on the iTunes music folder and I do and it is not a read only file. I also have full ownership of all folders.
I am at a loss on how to proceed.  I hope someone can help me.
    Thanks a lot.

If it was purchased from the iTunes store-there is no way to change the info.
If it is not from the iTunes store-should be able to right click on it and select get info and edit it (as pointed out above).

  • Why can I not edit song titles and artists as I could in the past?

Why can I not edit song titles and artists as I have in the past?

Do you mean by using the 'get info' function and editing the data there? What is happening instead of what used to happen?

    thanks

If I knew how to edit that field I would have stated so - it is possible that the programers didn't allow editing for a particular reason - blame them - not the people trying to help you find a way around the your particular issue.
I know that you cannot edit the field that you want to edit - I only offered a viable suggestion as to how to get around the problem. I have the same beef - but I found a suitable way around the problem. Is no longer an issue for me.

  • Un able to edit song info in itunes 7

I am currently organizing and fixing some errors in my itunes library and i'm having extreme difficulty editing song info.
For example about half of my songs show up as blues in the genre category. So i've gone through and changed them to rock, electronic, etc. The info will change but when i double click on the track (play the track) it changes the info back to the previous settings. I went to itunes help which instructed me to uncheck "organize itunes library" in order to write the new info to the file. But this has not worked either. this is a very frustrating problem because GNDB has given some very wrong info about album names and and info and i can't reorganize it.
Another example is a CD by Blockhead the album title is Music by Cavelight. Only 3 tracks have the correct album title the others are Blockhead Music by Cavelight, for some reason the artist name is included in the album title. When i correct the tracks that have the improper album name they do change untill the song is double clicked on, and then it resets to the previous name.
Please help i am a DJ with lots of music and organization is KEY!

Select one or more tracks, press CTRL-I to Get Info.
Are the tracks in question in .wav format? No tags there, so nothing for iTunes to read other than the filename. I have a script that get more data provided iTunes hasn't "helpfully" rearranged them.

  • Updated to ios5 cant edit song info via itunes anymore

Here's what's going on. I updated my OS on iPod Touch and when I did, all my content on it got deleted sans photos and contact info. Not too big of a deal but now when I drag songs from my music folder in windows and edit the song info in iTunes (i.e. changing Sade to Everything But The Girl) it does so in iTunes but the info isn't changed on my iPod. Any info would help and keep my hair in. Email [email protected]

    Problem Solved:
#1) after you install iTunes and reboot as it tells you to you must start up the program then log out of the program
#2) reboot 1 more time (this is redundant but you must do it to get your equalizer working and the ability to edit your song information).
    Everything is working correctly now.

  • Why can't I import songs into my iTunes?

Accidentally deleted all of my music for iTunes and stupidily emptied the trash but whatever, that's why Time Machine is great.
Simply put, got ALL my songs back from Time Machine and yet, iTunes seems to ignore anything I ask it to do. Can't drag and drop, can't "Add to library" (Command+O). No dialog box comes up or anything. Tried moving full folders and single song files and nothing happens whatsoever. Tried googling this, and everything is for Windows. I don't use my Mac all to often but my music is a must. I need my metal.
    Using:
    Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5
    iTunes 11.0.2 (22) 64 Bit
Any ideas? Because this is weird. I've already been complaining that you can't simply drag and drop crap into an iPhone and now THIS? What's wrong with Apple? I'm seriously debating a virus filled world or stick with constant irritants like this crap. I mean c'mon. My music is RIGHT there, why can't I just drag them into iTunes? Why? They were all there JUST a couple hours ago, so it can't be an issue of whether I'm using MP3 or whatever... Right? Ugh..

Yes, it was all there, but as I said. iTunes acts like it isn't, and we're talking about thousands upon thousands of songs sitting in their respective folders.
I had talked to my brother in law and he did mention something about iTunes having it's custom file that saves the information for everything it has into one, and to find that one if possible. But how can I locate it if using Time Machine to restore all of my music did nothing? I restored any iTunes related (all in one folder honestly), so what's the deal?
Sorry for the very late reply, this is still a very concerning issue that needs to be desperately resolved, I have just been very busy.

  • Why can't i edit song

I have the latest iTunes version & purchased a new iPhone 4S. When transferring song, I want to edit the info, but on the Library in the iPhone, it's locked. How can I unlock this to make the changes I want to?

Change it in iTunes, not on the iPhone. Then sync the iPhone to transfer this new info to the iPhone.

  • Can no longer edit song info

I just blindly upgraded my iTunes to 11.2.2 (3) and find that I can no longer edit any information on songs. This is not acceptable. Not only can I not enter missing song writing credits, I can't even tell it to sort by a performer's last name instead of first. I tried going to the actual file location to see if I can change permissions, but it won't let me - it simply says I only have read permission. This is true even for files I ripped from my own LPs, or from CDs I own, not just iTunes Store purchases.
Every time I upgrade I lose capability. I'm about to stop doing it. Anyone have a workaround?

Something tells me that this is a new installation on a new Vista machine correct?
I don't believe version before 7.1 will work on Vista. Its most likely a permission issue on Vista.

  • Why can't I edit song information? How do I fix this?

I just upgraded to the latest itunes version and with songs that have been added since that time, I cannot edit the info for the songs.  Any ideas?

Change it in iTunes, not on the iPhone. Then sync the iPhone to transfer this new info to the iPhone.

  • IPod losing space when editing song info in iTunes

I originally posted this in the iPod forum, but I'm not sure if it is a Pod issue or an iTunes issue.
    Hi,
Hopefully, this is going into the correct forum. I realize this is probably a very stupid question, but I have a 60 GB iPod Photo with over 9,000 songs on it.
I just went through the painstaking task of correcting all of the song entries that iTunes screwed up when importing (spelling mistakes, things like that).
After changing the info in iTunes, I plugged in the iPod in to update the songs (I auto-synch), and when waiting for the iPod to update, I noticed that the available space was decreasing at the same level as if these were brand new music files being loaded onto the pod.
Since these songs already existed on the pod, I'm just wondering why I lost a bunch of space when all I did was change text associated with the file. After the update, I waited to see if the pod would recognize it and bump the available space back up, but it didn't...it's almost like there are now 2 versions of the file on the iPod (though only 1 shows) as it has taken the space away.
Is this the way it works, or is there any way I can regain the space back that I had before this last update (taking in mind, that I didn't load any new music onto the iPod...I just changed some of the info).
    Many thanks for any help.

Artwork was already on the original file. All I did was literally change either the name of the song title or the album title on the info tab. Artwork was already there from when I imported the songs originally.
Makes sense that this would happen if iTunes thinks this is brand new file, but by losing the space, it appears to me that iTunes thinks there are two files, while the iPod only shows one.
    Thanks!

  • HT1848 why can't I transfer songs from my itunes account to my ipod?

On my computer I have tons of songs on Itunes, how can I transfer those songs to my Ipod? I have already sync my Ipod. I also owe money to itunes, could that be the reason why I can't transfer purchased songs and burned songs from cds to my ipod?

You can transfer itunes purchases:  File>Devices>Transfer Purchases
Why not copy them from your old computer, ro your backup copy of your old computer?
No need for such a gross over reaction.

  • What is the easiest way to edit song info in iTunes?

I had Windows Media Player as my default for ever on my computer. iTunes doesn't let you right-click to edit songs like WMP and I'm trying to get all my stuff off "Unknown album/title" etc. since for some reason when I imported everything it couldn't bring the names of tracks with it?

Select one or more tracks, press CTRL-I to Get Info.
Are the tracks in question in .wav format? No tags there, so nothing for iTunes to read other than the filename. I have a script that get more data provided iTunes hasn't "helpfully" rearranged them.

  • Why can't I skip songs fast on iTunes like on my iPod touch?

Like on my iPod when i'm listening to music i can skip to other songs very fast, but on iTunes its pretty slow.. like i can skip about 3 songs in a row before my clicking does nothing on the skip icon.

I've been having this issue too. But I can't even skip more that 1 before the button stops being a button and turns into a simple icon...

  • Why can I not delete songs off my itunes?

I swipe and delete but the songs are stll there and my phone still plays the songs. It has the icloud symbol on the side like it's telling me I need to reload the song but it won't go away!

If you do turn off "Show All Music" and these items are still present, but still won't delete, you may need to take a few extra steps to get rid of them.  In my experience, tapping the cloud to download a song makes it hard to delete the song -- they may not even show up on the device while connected to iTunes.
Some users have reported that signing out of your iTunes/App account on the iPhone, then signing back in lets them clear these songs.  I did not try that, but in my case I had to manually drag and drop songs from my iTunes library to my iPhone, then the downloaded song showed up in the "Manually added songs" category on the Music tab (where you set your sync settings).  Then and only then could I remove the cloud-downloaded songs.  Just keep this in mind if the above suggestion does not help.
