Why can't I find these files in Time Machine?

I've been trying for quite some time to copy my old time machine backups to a new drive.
Yet my folders seem to get scattered after copying.
Attached are screenshots of the error messages I get while copying my time machine backups. I have a strong suspision that my problem mainly has to do with the files that can't be copied "ds. Store" and "team fortress"
I don't care for these files, and I'd gladly delete them from my time machine backups. Yet I can't find them in my time machine backups.
How do I fond them?
And has anyone else had this same issue as me?

Here are the photos.
I wasn't able to upload them using my phone.

  • Why can't I restore a file from Time Machine?

I purchased a new Macbook Pro a month ago. I migrated all my stuff from my previous Macbook that was running Maverick. All went well. However, I was looking for a particular file. Apparently I had removed it from my old Mac at some point, but I found it in Time Machine. My backups are on an external hard drive. Again, I can see the file in Time Machine, but I can't seem to do anything with it.
To that end, I see two files: one has shows the file size, and the other (same name, file type, etc...) says "Calculating size"...forever.
    Thoughts? Suggestions?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the restore operation again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name or email address, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • HT4413 Why can't I find the files and data I transferred from time machine on my new mac?

So I just got a new mac and I always backed up my old mac. I used the migration assistant to transferr all the stuff from my old mac to the new one. After it completed I tried  to find all my pictures, music, and documents but couldn't. Where did all my stuff go and why can't I find it? Migration Assistant said everything transferred and went ok.

Peruse Pondini's Setup New Mac guide and seriously consider starting over. I'm a firm believer in only using the Setup Assistant and not creating a new account on first boot.

  • HT201250 How can I find a file on Time Machine.

The file was on my Desktop at one time but has been deleted. Typing it's name in the TM Spotlight field and clicking the Back Button (per the TM tutorial) doesn't work. Has anyone found a specific file on Time Machins that is no longer on the Mac?

First of all, I don't work for Apple and neither do most people who post here. This is primarily a user community.
The documentation is correct, even if you didn't have any success. I prefer to use mende1's suggestion, so I don't use Spotlight in Time Machine.
I understand you are frustrated, as I would be if it didn't work. Computer frustration isn’t one of my favorite pastimes.
Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

  • How can I retrieve a lost file in Time Machine?

    Hi,
I'm using a Western Digital Elements 1TB external hard drive to back up my MacBook Pro.
One day, I noticed that one of my fiels were missing, so I went in to the time machine looked for it (roughly the time period when I created it),
    but it wasn't there.
Is it possible to loose files in time machine?
Is there any way to retrieve them?
    Please help.
    Thanks

Note: the User's Library is hidden by default. It's also hidden in Time Machine. You have to be in the User's Library in order to restore items from Time Machine.
Under Go in the Menu bar hold down the Option key and select Library.
    Scroll down to the 'stickiesdatabase'
If you don't see the file, open Stickies and create a new test sticky. This will create the 'stickiesdatabase'  file.
Once you see the file, select the file.
    Enter Time Machine.
You should enter in your User's Library showing the file.
Go back in time to when your actual file existed with your data.
    Select Restore.

As you can see, the music isn't in that folder. So I then asked on here where the music files could be, and a person told me that there probably stored in one big folder then proccesed on the go. So I then put the game into my computer then went here.

    and this popped up.

So how do I open up these folders? I have WinRar, and I read that WinRar can open up Cab files. So why isn't it opening these? And even if I was able to open these folders, would the music files even be in them?

This is not the forum for your problem. Maybe the video game section of this site or the site you got the things from.

  • Why can't I find downlaoded files?

When I try to download a data file, Firefox doesn't ask me where to store the file as I have asked it to do in my option settings, and after it tells me the file was successfully downloaded it is nowhere to be found on my computer. I am using v. 3.6 on a 64 bit HP laptop using Vista. This problem may have resulted after a recent round of Microsoft updates, but I am not really sure I have ever successfully downloaded a file on this machine.

If you right-click an item in the Download Manager (Tools > Downloads), is "Open Containing Folder" enabled?
Tools > Options > Privacy > History: "Remember download history"
If that menu entry is grayed then that means that the file is not in the original download location.<br />
It may have been removed by anti-virus or cleanup software.

  • Where to find video files in Time Machine?

I'm still not figuring all of this out apparently. Hours later I have backed up my computer onto an external HD via Time Machine.  I wanted to check & be sure my videos are on there before I delete some from my hard drive & when I use finder to open Time Machine (the external HD), I cannot find anywhere in there that there are video files or even all of my (1000+) photos from Iphoto... where would these be listed? I don't see titles of the programs or folders called video or photo or pictures or anything along those lines. I even did a search of the drive for .mov and got nothing....
    Help!

You should never, NEVER use Finder to view or manage files on a Time Machine back-up.
With the Time Machine drive mounted, click the Time Machine icon at the top menu bar. Amongst the choices that come up is, "Enter Time Machine". A "Finder-like" set of windows hovering in outer space will open with your back-ups layered by date of the backup (shown below). Once you navigate to (using the big silver arrows), find the date you want, click on the folder icon in the window that will navigate your way to the file(s) you want to see, or restore.
At that point you can "see" whether the files you wanted to check on are there. You can also restore any files you wish to do so, by highlighting (clicking a file or folder), then hit the "Restore" button at the bottom right of the window.

Peggy, I tried your method described above. I've had a folder that used to live on my desktop but that I deleted some time ago. Inside I had a file, collage2.tif. After entering the name and click File Name (and at this point, I get the result window showing no found file - I had not clicked on anything else in the search window), I click on TM's icon. In TM, I click on the back arrow, and TM goes back in time, but doesn't show the file. [In fact it goes back to the very first back up.] However, if I look in the desktop folder and inside the subfolder that I had deleted (it shows up now since I've gone back in time), there's the file. I then checked to see if that folder/file existed on a more recent date (I wondered if TM want back in time to the most recent day that file existed) and sure enough, it exists in more recent days.
I've tried this several times, searching "This Mac" and "Desktop", but TM doesn't find the file, even though I can manually find it.

  • Finding specific files in Time Machine archives

So I have a whole bunch of audio files of different lines from 2001: A Space Odyssey on my computer. Or at least I did. They seem to have disappeared without a trace, and I can't track them down.
Is there any way to search the archives of Time Machine for specific file names or wildcards? It seems to me I can only browser the folder tree, but I don't recall where on the drive I may have stored the files.

  • Why are there no older Safari files in Time Machine?

For reasons I won't go into now, I lost all my Safari Bookmarks on my mac.  I need to restore them from Time Machine, but TM has NO bookmarks.plist files from before the event occurred, just the current ones from yesterday.  I can't find any Safari folders or supportring files on TM backups from earlier.  I have TM set to backup my main system drive that would contain the library folder, etc..  How can this be?

I believe you will find the File to "Restore", from an older date, in Safari through Time Machine here:
    Hope this helps

  • Why can I not see my projects in time machine

I have lost a project book and so I went into my time machine to find that projects wasn't there.
What do I need to do to either find my project or for this not to happen again.
    Thanks

    Not sure how you're looking, but Pondini's instructions are pretty clear;
    http://pondini.org/TM/15.html
Basically, open a Finder window, navigate to where the file should have been,
Then Enter Time Machine from the menu bar icon drop-down.
Step back through the Timeline until the file you want is found,
Select it and click the Restore button.

  • How do I find a file in Time Machine?

I get time machine. It just works. But my questions is, how do I locate a file that I know was backed up but I have no idea when the last time it was actually present on my system? Is there a way to just search like in Spotlight but have it show files that have been backed up?

    Open a Finder Window.
In the Finder Window, search for the file you want, select "file name" or "content", make sure "This Mac" is selected.
Click the Time Machine icon, in the dock, it will open on "Today".
Click on the back arrow to go back in time.
If the file was backed up, TM will go back and find it.
