WHY CAN'T I GET EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE TO IMPORT IN iMOVIE?
I have linked my computer to an external hard drive to import clips with a firewire cable(the same one I use when I import from my camcorder). iMovie detects the device is plugged in, but is not playing the pictures or sound.
Is there a setting I need to pix for this to work?
The hard drive I am using is a domestic hard drive recorder/player.
I have recorded the contents of a dvd onto the hard drive and am playing out through firewire straight into computer. imovie won't play or import.
It was working with my laptop which runs imovie 4. All formats are PAL.

Why can I see my external hard drive?
For 2 years or more I've had an external hrad drive to back up my Imac. One day I got a message that there had not beeb a back up for for a really long time ( I have it on automatic).
Ever since, I have not been able to see the external hard drive on mi Imac and have not been able to do regular back ups.
First I turned off, on, restart computer and tried to see if it showed up on another computer, which it did.
What could the problem be? It was working just fine.

ThanksEHD's can crash. First thing I'd recommend though is to do 2-3 SMC resets. Shut down the computer, then remove the power cord from both the wall plug and back of the computer, wait 15-20 seconds and restart normally and test.
If that fails use another cable to connect the drive, if that fails open Disk Utility and see if the EHD can be seen. If that fails then replace the drive. I would STRONGLY recommend 2 backups, use Time Machine on disk 1 and then use a create a clone using either SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner on the other drive. When it comes to backing up, redundancy is smart. Would you trust your bank if they only had one form of backup of all your money?? -

I have 2 iomegas and 1 LaCie. Changed cables. I can feel the external hard drives running and
I can hear them running but I can not get them on the computer any more. They did work at one time.
Can any one PLEASE help?Nothing appear on my desktop.
I did Repair and Verify the HDDs in Disk Utility>First Aid from the
Utilites App about a dozen times ans they all said everything was good
except for the last time there were erors found and I ran the
Disk Utility from the Start Up Disk and the repairs were made and everything
was subposed to te good and still Nothing on the desk top.

Can you use an external hard drive to back up my movies in iTunes but still be able to access them or is there a device so I don't have to use a pc ??
You can store them on a separate hard drive, you don't need to keep them on your laptop's hard drive. On your computer's iTunes on the Advanced tab in Edit > Preferences there is a 'copy files to iTunes media file when adding to library' tickbox - if you untick that, you should be able to copy the films to a separate drive and add them back to your iTunes library (File > Add To Library) and it should then point to them on that separate drive and not copy them to your hard drive. When you are happy that it is what is happening and that they are safely on your external drive you can delete the films from your laptop's hard drive.
If you plug the external drive into a different USB port next time (assuming that your laptop has more than one) then it might get a different drive letter, so you might need to always use it with the same port. -
I would like to know if you have to back up a macbook hard drive, can I use a external hard drive that has been previously used to back up several pc 's, or is it best to have a separate external drive for the Mac?
In the Mac side of things, backups usually come in two flavors: clones or incrementals.
A bootable clone is a bit-for-bit copy of all essential files in the startup volume. If using the Lions, clones can be made using CarbonCopyCloner or just plain old Disk Utility. These backups represent the safest protection of your info, but take the longest to do. Recovery is an inverse process: you copy the clone back into the internal drive.
Incremental backups start with a complete backup of the startup volume and only copy whatever changed from the previous run. OS X includes the fully integrated Time Machine backup utility to do this. It is extremely easy to do and takes the least amount of time. Recovery is another matter altogether since you have to start with a freshly installed instance of the OS and have to apply all intervening backups to bring the result to the latest saved version.
As for where the backup takes place, the recommended media is an external dedicated drive or drives connected via the fastest interface available on your Mac: Thunderbolt, USB3, Firewire, or USB2. Network-based backups, wired or wireless, are attractive but may not offer the same performance and hence take longer. Also important to note that the entire drive need not be completely dedicated to a single backup. The Mac's EFI firmware infrastructure allows for an unlimited number of partitions on a hard drive and each can be used for either type of backups.

Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

how do you remove back up data from the memory storage? my storage data states that i have over 80gb of data used for back ups and i dont know why as i use a external hard drive as a time machine .now my 250gb flash storage is nearly full.. HELP!
When Time Machine backs up a portable Mac, some of the free space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of recently deleted files. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown as Backups. The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself. If you followed bad advice to disable local snapshots by running a shell command, you may have ended up with a lot of data in the Other category. Ask for instructions in that case.

I can't find my external hard drive in FCPX
I can't find my external hard drive where I have all my old events and projects. In Finder it shows but not in the latest version of FCPX. I am full updated with FCP and Mavericks

After trying to change permissions on my computer so others on my network can grab files, my external Hard Drive has a lock on it and I can't access files. I've tried repairing permissions, logging in under another Administrator account, using Terminal to fix the problem, downloaded BatChmod but nothing works… Any other suggestions? Yes, that will work fine. It will back up normally once you plug it in again. I do this with my MacBook.
