Why can't I get internet away from home?

I have mini iPad that is only WiFi capable. As long as I am home, I have no problems connecting to internet. I have my desktop for that. I need my ipad for use away from the house. It never connects - I must be missing something in my settings. The public places, businesses, stores have provided me their passwords and to no avail. I am ready to wipe everything off my tablet and sell it. It is worthless to me at this point. Help!

When you go to such a place you need to do two things:
Settings > WiFI ... select the place's network and enter the password.
Generally (not every time, but very frequently), the place will have a "Terms and Conditions" you must agree to in order to use their WiFi. Those Terms and Conditions will appear either once you enter the WiFi password, or as soon as you open Safari. Let them appear and agree to them.

Some more information other than why would help. Does your service provider allow cellular data on your plan? Do you have cellular data turned on? Are you in a area with cellular coverage?

Without a Blackberry Data Plan you can't get email pushed to your Curve. While on your wi-fi network you are able to access your email, but away from that link you need a data plan.

While you could create a new ID without a credit card by following the steps in this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2534, I would recommend you first try contacting Apple support to find out what you can do to use your existing Apple ID without using a credit card (if it didn't have one before). You can set up a call with them by going to https://expresslane.apple.com, then click iTunes>iTunes Store>Purchases, Billing & Redemption>How to recover missing purchased items. The call will be free but you will need your serial number, which you can find in Settings>General>About. Mirroring won't fill the TV screen. The iPad has an aspect ratio of 4:3 and the iPhone 4S or prior an aspect ratio of 3:2, neither of these will fit exactly into a TV screen which as an aspect ratio of 16:9. The Apple TV will not zoom the mirrored image, because it may well cut off information which is situated at the top or bottom of the screen.
You may wish to try each of the settings in settings > AirPlay > Adjust for Overscan for the best setting that suits you.

I've managed to get back to Pages 4.3 and delete the downgrade Pages 5, which makes a total mess of any doc prepared with it, but how to I get back to the old version of Pages on my iPad so that I can work while I am away from home.

What is really irritating is that Apple give a big hurray about what they have added as "new" in Pages 5 (most of it pretty useless) without telling you of the myriad things they have deleted. If they had shown the list your gave the link to, I doubt may regular users would risked going to Mavericks with its auto upgrade. My partner got the message in time and is sticking with the earlier operating systems and Pages on Mac and iPad. Lucky girl.
I have found a way to use my iPad to add chapters written while on the move to reports on my iMac Pages 4.3. If I write it on the new Pages on the iMac (don't seem to be able to revert there), the send the report as an email in WORD format (not Pages) and download it in the Text Editor, then cut and paste into the story on the iMac. Hardly elegant but it works.

I have PowerDVD set to 6 speakers so that it will do the decoding. Audigy 2 is set to pass through so that PowerDVD will decode. I thought this would work, but I still get just DD or DTS!! (PowerDVD will decode DTS, while the sound card can't, so why can't I get MLP?)

I have been fiddling with this all morning. I had had problems with Creative's DVD-A player in the past, (crashed whenever it detected a DVD-A), but I thought I would work with it some more. I uninstalled the Creative DVD-A player and PowerDVD, then ran a registry cleaner to get rid of leftovers (there was a bunch). Reinstalled the Creative player - it didn't crash, but didn't recognize a DVD-A at all, no playlist, nothing. Reinstalled PowerDVD and played disk (still just Dolby Digital only). Started Creative player - it played the DVD-A!!!! (Sounds so much better in MLP!!!) I was pretty excited. So closed PowerDVD, inserted another DVD-A and started Creative player - same thing - no detection!
Well, this is what I have to do to play DVD-A the way it's meant to be played (Adv. Res.):
. Start play on PowerDVD.
2. Start play on Creative DVD-A player.
3. Close PowerDVD
This is a real pain!!! Creative player needs a jumpstart from PowerDVD! Maybe there's a codec conflict?
When I feel ambitious, I'll try reformatting the HDD, unless you have a solution if you think maybe it's a codec problem. I read somewhere how to determine this, but of course now I don't remember where I saw it :smileytongue:Message Edited by GadgetGirl on 0-26-2005 0:53 PM

Can't send mail when away from home

I can't get my MacBook Pro to send email when I'm away from home but the connection doctor says it is connected to all of the smtp servers in my mail accounts.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Most, if not all ISPs, block the use of SMTP servers that are outside of their network (or not provided by the ISP being used for your internet connection) on Port 25. Some ISPs allow the use of an authenticated SMTP server only that is outside of their network, but some block all available ports that can be used with an SMTP server that is outside of their network.
These restrictions are in place as part of an overall effort to prevent spam emanating from the ISP's domain.
Earthlink has an authenticated SMTP server, as does a .Mac account, so you should be able to send messages with your Earthlink and .Mac accounts when connected to different ISPs. If not and you are using 25 for the SMTP server port for these SMTP servers, try using 587 for the SMTP server port instead for each.
You can only use the .Mac authenticated SMTP server to send messages with a .Mac account, but it should be possible to use Earthlink's authenticated SMTP server to send messages with any account.
If the ISP you are using for your internet connection is very restrictive in this regard, there isn't much you can do except for contacting the ISP being used for their requirement when using an SMTP server that is outside of their network, or send via webmail access for the account using a browser.

Can no longer access ESPN3 away from home

After setting up the remote access feature, I used to be able to access espn3 away from home, but can no longer do so. When I select an event to watch, I see the prompt to select internet service provider and then continue. I then receive a login error message from AT&T. I just tried the same thing using my wife's laptop and it works just fine, so there is something not quite right on my computer. Any ideas of what to look for to fix this?

You can, but you have to pay an additional fee to AT&T. I think it's about $20/month for tethering.
