Why can't i get the new itunes update

My computer will not download the new itunes upgrade. It asks me to download it and then nothing happens. How can I fix this?

Try updating your iTunes using an iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64Setup.exe) installer file downloaded from the Apple website:

Err 3259 means that the download has taken too long to respond. Are you sure your internet connection is okay? Have you tried powering your router off and then on again?

My computer won't let me upgrade software or itunes. I keep getting a 'not recognized' message when I try to download the .dmg file. Also consider the following approach. I have found a temporary solution, allowing the previous version of iTunes (v. 11.1.3 (x64) in my case) to be re-installed. It will allow you to re-establish use of iTunes until the Apple software engineers fix the most recent disasterous upgrade (v. 11.1.4). If you haven't, try updating through iTunes while connected to your syncing PC.

Even a four-year-old MacBook should have come with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard. Leopard can run the latest version of iTunes; it will download and install pretty much automatically if you run Software Update.
You might first have to be sure that you are running the latest version of Leopard, which is 10.5.8. This, too, will download and install for you if you run Software Update. Just keep running Software Update until there is nothing left to download and install (you might have to run it more than once because some updates require previous updates to be installed first).
If you have a version of Mac OS X earlier than 10.5, then you can't run the latest version of iTunes. You will need to buy a more recent version of Mac OS X. You must be running at least 10.4 Tiger, and you can upgrade directly to Snow Leopard from Tiger. Apple still sells Snow Leopard for about $30 and you might find it slightly less at a retailer or on eBay. After upgrading to Snow Leopard, you will be able to upgrade to Lion using the Mac App Store for another $30 or so if your MacBook meets the minimum system requirements.

I have got myself in a real mess, I installed the new iOS 7 onto my iPad and I don't like it so I imported all my new photos to my mac, then I reset all my settings on my iPad thinking that it would go back to the original settings but alas didn't work.

Put simply, the minimum system requirements for iTunes have changed. You need a Mac running at least OS X 10.6.8.
It's best you look online to see if your model of Mac can be upgraded to at least 10.6.8 "Snow Leopard". It should still be possible to order a copy of Snow Leopard if so.
