Why can't I iMessage my sons iPod touch

This is the problem - husband, oldest son and I all have iPhone 4S - youngest son has iPod touch 5.... We set youngest up with iMessage on the touch. Husband & oldest son can reply to younger son, however when I try to reply to him I just get a message that says " user is not available by iMessage at this time" he has no problems I messaging me, I just can't reply or send him a message in return - help please

Change your iTunes (Apple ID) password along with any other password that was stored in the iPod.  If any passwords are associated with credit cards, contact the CC company and get your card replaced (with a new number).  If any passwords are associated with your bank or any savings institution, contact them also and discuss approprate action with them.
The "Find my..." function is pretty much useless if the device is in the hands of a thief.  All that is necessary is for the thief to connect to any computer with iTunes and "Restore as new."
The only real protection you have is with the personal information on the device rather than the physical device itself.  Something as small as an iPod should have a strong 8-digit (or longer) password AND be configured for automatic wipe in the event of ten consecutive incorrect password entries.

    Yes they can, you are correct. I should have maybe said that in my post. I was merely trying to say that I believe they want to keep the iPhone more organized. I got out of dragging and dropping to my iPod after I created my first playlist. Makes things a lot eaiser just to sync a list.

    You have to leave the SIM card in but yes, it will work fine as an iPod and using wifi.

    - Try another cable       
    - Try on another computer

    The iPod backup that iTunes makes does not inlcude synced media like apps and music. Those items should be in your iTunes library.

    Have him go to Settings>Messages>Send & Recieve at> Tap on his apple ID and choose sign out. Then sign back in!
