Why can't I import photos into iphoto suddenly?

I suddenly started having problems upload new photos from my Canon powershot s45. When I try to import new photos I get the message "couldn't create ://volumes/davedrive/users/davidneu/pictures/iphotolibrary/2207/04/14/img_7344- 1.jpg
or some such similar message. Then follows a window "files couldn't be imported unrecongized file type or may not contain valid data". The same happens with photos from the web, Mail, or my desktop. I'm running osx 10.4.8 on my venerable G4 dual 1ghz. I do have over 6000 photos but over 6 gb of hd space left. I can open the photos in photoshop and preview and they appear fine but a resave as tiff doesn't help and if I try image capture it crashes after downloading one photo (the only way I can get them onto the computer is one at a time using image capture. Disk utility didn't help nor did reformatting the cf card. Any thoughts? thanks a lot...Dave

I am struggling with similar difficulties.
I use an iMac G5 (Power PC) and a Canon PowerShot G6, which have been compatible with each other for 14 months. A couple of weeks ago, the Canon's rechargable battery ran low and, instead of connecting the camera to the iMac via the USB cable, I removed the SanDisk CompactFlash Ultra II card and imported photos on it via a SanDisk upload USB device. [The G6 manual recommends connecting the camera only when the battery is fully charged.] After the battery recharged, I took more photos and tried to upload them via the original Canon-supplied USB cable, but iPhoto did not launch. Because the camera turns on and indicates it's connected , I know it's not the USB cable [I actually ordered a new one, but the results are the same]. I've tried reformatting the SanDisk card in the camera, but this hasn't corrected the problem. However, if I connect the SanDisk device with card to the USB hub, iPhoto launches, identifying the device as "CANON_DC", complete with the little "eject" icon.
What am I forgetting? What would be the next step? Reinstalling the Canon software?

  • Why can't I import photos from iPhoto to Photoshop Elements 6?

I've got Photoshop Elements 6 on my iMac desktop running OS X 10.7.4.  When I click on File>Open in PE6, my iMac Finder opens.  I then select Photos and all my iPhoto and Photo Booth files open.  But I cannot click on (well, I can click on them but nothing happens) any photo to pull it into PE6.  It seems a simple operation, but apparently not for me!  Any help getting this application to work would be sincerely appreciated!  Thank you.

You can't do it that way. The iphoto library is for iphoto's own use, and poking at from outside iphoto is the fastest way to corrupt it and lose all your photos. You have two choices:
    1. Set PSE as your external editor for iphoto and open all images from iphoto, not by using File>Open.
    2. Export the photos from iphoto, open the copies and save them, then reimport the edited photos as new files.

  • Why can't I import photos into Lightroom 5.6?

I have Lightroom 5.6 on a Mac and when I click import, none of my photos will show up to import. I have deleted and re-downlaoded the program and updated it. I don't know what to try next. It has been working for the past year and a half and now it just won't work.

    Thank you for your response.
Here is as much information as I can remember pertaining to my problem.
    -Canon T3i,
-SD card is a Sandisk 16 GB Extreme Plus 80MB/s
    -Windows 7 professional
-Lightroom 5.3, recently upgraded from 5.2. Not sure if there is a
    correlation there with my importing
    problem.
-I have been able to import images in the past and able to manipulate them.
I select the import button, I then select the images to import, then
select a new destination folder as I have always successfully done in the
       past, then click IMPORT.
This is the point at which Lightroom deviates from the norm and slows to
a crawl while importing the images. After a 1 ½ hour wait, I get a message
stating that none of the images I have selected for import have been
imported due to them being unreadable by Lightroom, or words to that
effect. It lists ALL of the files that I had selected for import.
I have checked all the permissions of the files and have found no hidden
or locked images. I have watched every video I can find explaining the
proper method of importing images, written the steps down one-by-one, and
followed the instructions EXACTLY, numerous times.
Any help will be greatly appreciated!

  • Can't import photos into iPhoto

I have a Sony DSC W5 digital camera. For five years I have been able to import photos from the Sony camera into iPhoto. In the last two days I can no longer import photos into iPhoto. I get an "unrecognizable file" prompt. I can drag the photo files onto the Finder and view them there. The photo on the Finder has a .jpg suffix just as all the other photos in iPhoto. Anybody got an idea on how to solve this problem? Thank you.

get the photos off of the card and reformat the card using the camera format command
Can you import the photos from disk once you have moved them from the camera to the disk? If not try opening one preview and saving as to create a new file and import that

  • Importing photos into iPhoto 9 already geotagged in Picasa 3.5

Is it possible to import photos into iPhoto 9 that have already been geotagged in Picasa 3.5?
The Goetagging in Picasa seems (to me) to be easier to use (close integration with Google Earth, but the look and feel of the iPhoto app, slideshows and printing options are far better in iPhoto. (just my personal opinion - maybe not shared by all!)
Are the photos tagged by Picasa in such a way that the lat/long info is embedded in the file and readable by iPhoto?

I have no idea if Picassa "properly" tags the photos or not (i.e. puts the data into the photo's exif). I guess you could simply tag on then add it to iPhoto and see if the location sticks.
But as an aside, I use Graphic Converter (CG) to, among a number of tasks, Geotag my photos before I add them to iPhoto. GeoTagging can be done with a GPS data log file or you can also Geotag them using Google Earth, which you may prefer. CG definitely tags them correctly and when I later add them to iPhoto the locations are correct.

  • When importing photos into iPhoto I get an error Unreadable Files:

When importing photos into iPhoto I get an error Unreadable Files: The following files could not be imported (they may be an unrecognized file type or the files may not contain valid data).
I can open the JPG in question with PREVIEW, photoshop etc.. actually if I try to import a photo that I had originally imported it also fails..
    Please help... Thank you..

I too had this error message (and to be honest, it was becoming a bit of a pain). I resolved it in a slightly different way to Terence.
I had 10 photos that were allegedly unreadable; however, as Terence rightly says, they are duplicates. When I opened iPhoto I mad a note of each of the files concerned and did a Spotlight search throughout my hard drive.
For each photo, there were four or five duplicates. I deleted all but one of each of the photos and then reopened iPhoto. No more error message.
The original problem stemmed from importing my files directly from an external device I was using with a previous computer [that was running XP].
    Anyway, hope this helps.

Does this happen if you try to Import to Library within iPhoto, or is it when you connect your camera (and which is set to automatically use iPhoto) that this error message occurs?

I have moved my iPhoto to an external hard drive. so now I have to have the external hard drive connected to my laptop to view the photos.  Now when I want to import photos into iPhoto from my media card, I don't have room to connect both devices at the same time as the usb ports are side by side.  How do I import my photos from the media card to the external hard drive now?

First transfer the photos to a folder on your MacBook using Image Capture in your Utilities folder. Then move them to iPhoto.
BTW, you might want to invest in a cheap USB hub.

  • My MacBook Pro will not allow me to shut down it says it is still importing photos into iPhoto it also will not quit

My MacBook Pro will not allow me to shut down my computer.  Their seems to be a glitch in the iPhotos.  It says it is still importing photos into iPhoto.  It will not allow me to quit either.

You could always hold down the power button to force the MacBook to turn off. This is usually a last resort step though, but if nothing else is working and you are sure it isn't importing photos then you might consider it.

  • Trouble importing photos into IPhoto

I am a new Apple User, so I suffer from simple frustrations!
I just returned from vacation and have been trying to import my photos into IPhoto. I had them loaded on my work laptop (PC) so I loaded the 6.5 Gb of photos onto a portable hard disk. Every time I tried to import them the application would shut down prior to finishing the import. I tried importing all of them at once, in groups of 100 and in groups of 20 and get the same thing every time. I also copied the photos into another folder onto my hard disk and tied importing from there only to get the same result.
Does anyone have any idea why this is happening? I usually download from my compact flash cards and have never had any issues before. Any help anyone could provide would be appreciated. I have saved a copy of he error message that is sent to apple if that would help anyone. Thanks in advance for any help.

You can try image capture (in your applications folder) but if neither iPhoto nor preview likes them they probably have a problem - something like graphic convertor might be able to open adn resave them - http://www.lemkesoft.com/

  • Why can't i import photos from a different user account?

Why when i import photos to iphoto from my user account it works fine. If i try importing them from the other user account it the photo it shows the event folder in the events page but when you go into it there are no photos, and when you close the app it dissappears completely. I dont understand why it is doing this? The iphoto library is actually from the other user account so there shoudnlt be any sharing issues. The only thing is that i iorignially installed on the other user account but it all started when i updated it to iphoto11 and installed it on my account. that shouldnt make a difference though??
Also if it is not possible to be able to import from both accounts how can i change it so that the other account is able to import only and not from my account?

I have the same iphoto library selected for both user acounts
    How?
and share my photos is checked on both accounts from preferences.
If they use the same Library, why are you sharing this way?
