Why can't I INclude folders to backup?

I know that you can exclude certain folders not to back up, but why can't I include files to be backed up? Why can't I only backup two Folders in Library? I have to EXclude everything in Library except those two folders. That makes keeping TM's "Do not backup" list very long and unorganized.
With Backup, you just include everything that you want to back up not EXclude.
I understand that TM is designed to be as user free as possible but there should be advance features so that I can specify certain folders to be backed up as well.

No one who reads these forums can take care of your request.
Try filing feedback and suggesting that as an extra feature.
I think apple's reasoning was that you would want a full backup in case your hard drive crashed (because that would make restoring MUCH easier), so it would be easier to exclude some files rather than include every file on the drive.

  • Why can't I create FOLDERS under my iPod name in the DEVICES heading?

Note: I have my iTunes set to "MANUALLY MANAGE MUSIC".
I can create Folders, subfolders and playlists under the PLAYLISTS heading.
Under my iPod name in the DEVICES heading, iTunes only lets me create a PlayList. No Folders.
    Questions:
Do I need to AUTO sync to get the folder heirarchy and songs created under the PLAYLISTS heading onto the iPod?
How do I create a Folder under my iPod name in the DEVICES heading? This appears to be a bug and/or another iTunes limitation. I tried it and whenever a new folder is seleted, the folder appears under the PLAYLISTS.

*Why are you creating playlists for albums and artists?*
Why is that relevant? This is an Apple product which, historically, has allowed its users to file information any way they saw fit! Why suddenly impose arbitrary restrictions on how I organize my own data?
+The earlier version of iTunes DID allow you to create folders in the iPod+
    *Only when autosycning*
*You can be frustrated all you want but the feature has not been removed.*
Yes the feature HAS BEEN removed. I currently am holding a prior generation nano in my hand which, in iTunes 6, allows me to MANUALLY create folders in it and drag playlists to the folders. I can nest folders and create any hierarchy I want. Since I am doing it MANUALLY, I can use the same ipod on several computers and collect selected audio files from each of those computers. The new version of iPod/iTunes simply has REMOVED this feaure and it is now only available if you autosynch. Like I said, I currently have free use of folders on an older gen ipod in MANUAL mode.
The software is too concerned with whether you are pirating copyrighted material and does not at all take into account LEGAL use of the iPod! As a matter of fact, I use the iPod to store audio tracks of live presentations and need an easy way to archive these on a single ipod from several computers. The most efficiient way to do this is to MANUALLY transfer the files from each computer to the iPod, and put them in their corresponding folders on the iPod. I have been doing this for over a year on the previous generation nano and iTunes 6 with no sweat. But new iPod required 7.5 iTunes and I can no longer create folders on the iPod in manual mode. This requires a long linear stream of playlists that cannot be organized into category, computer of origin, etc. As such, I can no longeruse the new iPod for my very simple application of archiving/playing non-copyrighted audio files which have no prior id3 info.
    See?

  • Why can't I create a new backup if I don't remember the encryption password from an old backup?

I imagine this is so it can simply edit the old backup, but can't I just create a new backup?

Same issue.  Have deleted the old backup and can't create a new encrypted backup without the password for the old backup. Can't create an unencrypted backup without the password for the old backup.  This is a functional software defect that Apple needs to fix.
NOTE: I AM NOT TRYING TO ACCESS THE OLD BACKUP, I JUST WANT TO CREATE A NEW ONE.

  • Why can't I include a SD card to time Machine backup

This is a bit of a weird issue.
Got a 64GB Micro SDXC card and mini usb adapter to give the 128GB MBA (running 10.7.4) a bit of space as it was running out of space.
I formatted the drive to OSX journaled and moved the iPhoto library to it, all good.
I decided i wanted to start a fresh backup so made a new Time Machine USB 500GB drive ready. I set it as the backup drive and in the options, remove my 64GB drive from the "Do not backup drive" list.
I remove it, in the bottom of the window, it shows that the estimated backup is 140GB, which it should. But when I close the window it seems to automatically revert back and when the time machine job runs, it says it is only backing up about 40GB.
I open the window again and the 64GB drive is back in the "Do not backup" list!
    Is this a bug?
Is there a specific HFS format i need to choose?

    Hi HPR,
The closest it says in there is
"External drives:  By default, it will exclude all externals.  To have one backed-up, you must remove it from the exclusion list, per question #10.  "

  • Why can't we have folders AND stacks in the dock?

If I drag a single item into the dock, I want it to remain a single item.
If I drag multiple items into the dock, I want them to become a stack.
If I drag one folder filled with multiple items, it should only turn into a stack on my say-so, like if I Option-Drag it onto the dock or something. Stacks shouldn't be forced onto the user.
Please make Stacks an ADDED FEATURE and not an ABSOLUTE CHANGE in everyone's daily workflow.

I might actually buy a windows laptop.  So sad.
No need, as long as Apple continues to offer a notebook line-up that includes built-in optical drives, to buy a Windows machine... yet.
As I said, the only thing that I use my SuperDrive for now is backups of all those digital software deliveries, documents, etc. If I finally break down and buy an external Blu-ray drive, I won't use the SuperDrive at all. But right now I have almost 12 years of back-ups on DVD, both single and dual layer - so, for now, I need my optical drive.
I'm hoping that - one day - Apple will sell MacBook Pros with Blu-ray drives. Hey, I can wish, right?

  • Why are playlists not included in iPhone backups?

I just setup my new iPhone 6 by restoring from an iTunes backup of my iPhone 5s, and I was surprised to find that playlists i had on my 5s were not on my 6. Any ideas why?
Also, although all my photos, contacts, iMessages, etc. are on my new 6 now, the "used" storage amount is much smaller than what my 5s showed - by about 18GB. Some of it is due to cloud content not being downloaded, but it does not seem to add up. Is there other stuff that did not get pulled from the 5s to the 6 through the backup-and-restore process?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hey cc:P,
Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities and congrats on your new iPhone 6. Check out the following section from this article on backing up:
Should I use iTunes or iCloud to back up my iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch? - Apple Support
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204136
Keep in mind that iTunes Backup doesn't create a duplicate back up of your movies, music, podcasts, and apps. When you back up, your media content is synced from your primary computer using iTunes.
When you restore a backup, your media (including playlists) is not yet restored to your device. You’ll need to sync the new phone with your iTunes library to transfer over all of the media content.
    Thanks,
    Matt M.

  • Why can't I label folders-Mac OS X 10.6.8

lately I have been having problems with labeling folders (Finder>File>Label).
I am using Snow Leopard - does any one have any tips?
I also can't drop folders into other folders (I get a ø sign)

    Open Terminal (Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app)
    and copy/paste this:
    sudo chown -R `id -un` ~
press 'return' and enter your password. It won't echo to the screen as you type, so type carefully.
    Test for the problem.

  • Why can't I include a color profile when exporting to PDF?

I've a basic RGB illustrator file - no embedded or linked images, just flat colors and gradients.
I'm working in sRGB space and this is reported correctly in the info field at the lower left of the editing window.
    Some issues:
    1. When I look at this file in Bridge it's listed as 'untagged'.  However if I re-open it in illustrator it's reported to be sRGB as expected.
    What's broken here?
    ...and of more immediate concern:
    2. Despite requesting 'Include All Profiles' on the output page of the PDF save dialog I cannot get a PDF exported that includes the sRGB profile.
Same issues in both CS6 and CC - Windows 7, 64.
    Thoughts, comments or suggestions welcomed....
    Thanks

Your .pdf is fine, if you open the .pdf in illustrator, adn hten do edit >> assign profile, this radio biutton will bo on what the profile. Also in the bottom left of illustrator you can see what color profile your document is saved with, btuy turning that on.
Hold down option adn you will get other fun easter egg options
Bridge only seems to show profiles for certain bitmapped formats, except .psb format.

  • Why can't time machine delete old backups when full?

My time machine disc is full and sends a message that it will delete older fileson next try. It did that before I installed OS 10.8.4.

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message that corresponds to a failed backup. Now
CLEAR THE WORD "Starting" FROM THE TEXT FIELD
so that all messages are showning, and scroll back in the log to the time you noted. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
If all you see are messages that contain the word "Starting," you didn't clear the text field.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Some personal information, such as the names of your files, may be included — anonymize before posting.

  • Why can't I restore from a backup (backup file made from another Z10 now gone)

I made a backup yesterday from my old Z10 (now exchanged and security wiped)
I want to restore to my new Z10. But Blackberry link (1.2.1.18) won't open the backup, it's greyed out and it says 'can't find any backup from this phone'.
How do I restore this backup from a different phone?

    Ira,
    Thanks for your suggestions.
I haven't ever changed my Blackberry user ID - unless somehow I was logged out if that's possible, on the old machine.
The new phone after setup downloaded an upgrade to BB10 that is a newer version (I assume) than the old phone.
Is there no way to unlock this backup? What is the point of having a backup system you can't restore from? The Link software has improved but throughout history it has been full of non-working DRM that seems designed to frustrate and make impossible the simplest tasks. Can I turn off the security somehow?

  • Why can't I open folders (pictures) on my mac mini - it says I don't have access

I can't open the Pictures or Music or any other folders that I have in Users on my hard drive

    Hey BDAqua,
Thanks for that. Made me think. I used one of my other logins by accident. For some reason my Mac MIni will let me log in using one of two usernames. So that was an easy fix that I should have known. I appreiciate your suggestion.

  • Why can't I put folders in the doc?

I'm on G4 Powerbook with the latest version of OSX. When I drag a folder to the doc nothing happens. Is there something I have to turn on to enable this funtionality?
    Any ideas?

Just to add to the previous response, the "left" side is to the left of the single vertical line in the Dock. You can only put apps and utilities on the left side. Files and folders go in the right side (just don't accidentally drop them on the Trash!).
Tip #1: If you want to put a file into a directory that is on the Dock, hold down the Command key while dragging the file; the folders will "lock" into place so you can drop it on the folder, not add the file to the Dock as a new item.
Tip #2: You can also drag files onto an application on the Dock to open the file in that app. The app's icon will darken in the Dock if that app CAN open the file; if you want to force an app to open a file that it wouldn't normally be able to open (ie. the app won't darken when you drag the file over it), hold down Command-Option.

  • Why can't I access folders on my external hard drive when I am an admin user?

    Early 2011 15" MacBook Pro
    2GHz Intel Core i7
    Lion
I have a 2TB external hard drive connected to my Airport Extreme that I use to save all of my files.  Both my user profile & my wife's are admin users, however she cannot access the external drive at all.  It has a red circle with a white line through it when you look at it on finder & none of the folders are listed to change permissions under her login.
When I go to finder under my login, I have selected Read & Write permission for "everyone", but she still cannot access the drive.  When I attempt to add permission for her user profile specifically, I am told "The name you entered isn't valid.  Please try again"
    Help!

Thanks everyone. I suppose I'll just reformat for Apple. I need to use it for large files, and I suppose I could survive without editing ablities on Windows.
There's another alternative, format it as exFat, 4G limit does not apply and OSX + Windows will be able to read/write.

  • Why can't I complete an iCloud backup on my iPad?

I'm unable to complete an iCloud backup on my iPad. It gets to the point where the progress bar starts working, but eventually says that it was unable to backup, without giving a reason
    Any ideas?

      -> Systemsettings -> iCloud.
You must have OSX 10.7.2 , else it is not part of OSX.
for iOS : version 5 is needed, tap Settings -> iCloud.

  • Why Can't I Transfer Folders with Files

I was hoping to use my new Ipad as a reader for a research library of over 5,000+ pdf documents that I have accumulated for my research into the Camp Lejeune drinking water contamination. Sadly, I found I could transfer files but not folders in which I have my files organized. Anyone have any ideas or suggestions. The App developers I have contacted say the problem is in Itunes and Apple says it is the Apps themselves.
    Any ideas would be appreciated.

There are two parts to what you're trying to do-
First, you need an iPad app that supports folders- Apple's iBooks app does not; PDF Expert by Readdle (the best PDF app I've found so far, $4.99) does allow folders.
Second, you need a Computer (Mac/PC) app that allows you to sync folders Computer-to-iPad. iTunes file sharing does not allow this. However, there are third-party solutions that allow this, without jailbreaking your iPad. The best one I've found is PadSync by Ecamm. ($10)
