Why can't I install iMovie 10 on my 2008 Mac Pro?

I am running Mavericks 10.9 and really like it. I tried to install iMovie 10 on my Mac Pro  Quad-Core Intel Xeon 2.8 GHz and it says my video card is not compatible. Huh? I have a ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT with 256mb vram.
Thanks!
Rich

I don't think that card supports Open CL which iMovie 10 requires.

Don't know! You'll have to give us more details of what's happening when you try. Can you print other documents OK? When you try to print, does the printer icon appear in the dock - click on it and see if there are any printer messages.

  • Lion will not install on a January 2008 Mac Pro (3.1)

I have a January 2008 Mac Pro (version 3.1) and I'm trying to install Lion on one of the hard drives in the main chassis. It has consistently failed.
    I have tried:
    Reseating memory
    Reseathing hard drives
    Zap PRAM
    Reset SMC
Downloaded 4 fresh copies of Lion from the App Store
    Install from the installer file
Install from a DVD made with InstallESD.DMG
    Yet, it fails consistently.
I have 5 log files I'm willing to share, but they almost always look like this one. Some of them fail on different pkg's, but in general, this one seems to be the most regular failure. It's like the filesystem just dies in the middle of the install.
Any insight would be GREATLY appreciated.

    I figured out the problem.
This is going to sound a little crazy, but I've spent a lot of time on this one.
There's some kind of incompatibility with Lion and Seagate ST31000340AS drives. I was trying to install Lion on these drives and it would consistently fail. I've also tried to use these drives in a RAID volume. No go. I tried three different drives of this model. All of them failed.
I tried to install Lion on a Seagate ST31000528AS and it worked first time and sings beautifully.

  • With Boot Camp, should I install the 64 bit version of Windows 7 (Home Premium edition) OR the 32 bit version when installing onto an early 2008 Mac Pro operating OSX Lion with a 1 TByte internal HDD?

With an early 2008 Mac Pro I'm about to add a second internal drive (1 TByte SATA) and initially install OSX Lion onto the new drive.  Then to partition this new HDD via Boot camp.  But my question is whether I am best advised to purchase the 64 bit version of Windows 7 (Home Premium) or the 32 bit version of Windows 7 (Home Premium) for the Windows sector of the disk  What are the differences, and will I notice a difference in performance?

In chart from wiki, (scroll down to "Comparison chart") check the maximum CPUs supported.
You don't see this on MSoft's 1st searched for chart hit. This is one reason you will regret not paying for Professional+ if you get Home Premium 64 as I did for Mac Pro early 2008.
Home Prem Task Mgr sees 4 processors vs. the 8 that are seen by Pro+.
Costs more than a Mac upgrade to Lion if you make that mistake.

  • Why can't I install Snow Leopard in my MB Pro?

I have Leopard in my Macbook Pro (Intel) and would like to upgrade to Mountain Lion.  I have it on the disk that came with my husband's Mac Pro, but if I insert the disk it says it can't be installed on my MBP.  Is that because it's only licensed for the Mac Pro or is there another reason?

It's because the 10.6 your attempting to use is machine  specific with hardware drivers for that model of Mac only.
You will need the 10.6.3 white retail disks, call Apple via phone to order.
BTW, a 10.5 era machine may not run 10.7 or 10.8, or may only run 10.7, or if it does run either may do so slowely and wont' run your older PPC based software and hardware drivers.
You might even have to upgrade RAM, so be sure of your hardware requirements and expect to replace some software with new copies.
IMO it's best to stick with 10.6.8 on most pre 2010 issue Macs.
Things to consider before upgrading OS X

  • Why can't I install IOS x Lion on Mac RAID?

I have a Mac Pro, OSX 10.6.8. Four hard drives 6TB in total. 3TB Start Up RAID striped, 3 TB backup Time Machine. I want to install Lion but get the message an error has occured. Any advice please?

I am not a fan of installing Mac OS X on a RAID. I think you get a better overall performance boost from establishing a Boot Drive, which stops the System from competing with your data reads and writes.
RAID gets its speed from having the heads sitting right at the next spot to read from, and having the second drive transferring while the first drive is seeking. Mac OS X does a whole lot of "snacking" -- reading (and some writing) smallish bits of stuff from all over the Boot Drive. So it does not really get much of a boost from RAID. And having data and Sytem mixed on the RAID slows down both, because frequent System accesses move the heads away from the data files.

  • I own a mac pro which i bought from thailand but i live in Maldives , why can't i buy an app for my mac pro from Maldives ?

i own a mac pro but i cant buy any apple software to my mac because they dont accept my credit card

You appear to have boght a Mac and taken it to a country with no iTunes/Mac App Store. So there is nowhere for you to buy. You must buy from the stores for your country and there isn't one that I can find.

  • Install failed on early 2008 Mac Pro

I've put off installing 10.8 on my old (but not that old) Mac Pro. Bought a new hard drive, partitioned it, installed 10.6 on it, installed 10.6.8 on it, and then bought and downloaded Mountain Lion. The install seems to work, but then, rebooting, i get the gray screen, never the Apple logo, and after ten minutes or so the computer boots into my old 10.6.8. I guess I can try reinstalling, but damned if I can find the .pkg. I hate to have to redownload 4.4 GB. Any advice appreciated.

Reboot and hold down the option key. You should be taken to the boot manager which lists all bootable drives attached. If the 10.8 install worked, you should see three drives, the 10.6 drive, the 10.8 drive, and the 10.8 Recovery HD.
If you don't see the 10.8 partition, then it didn't install correctly. It may be trying to boot the 10.8 partition, but can't and eventually goes to the 10.6 partition.
While booted, go to System Preferences, Startup Disk, and select the desired startup disk.

  • Why can't I install iMovie 7.1.4?

i have a Mac 10.4.11 with imovie hd 6.0.6. so i downloaded imovie 7.1.4, but when i opened the installer, it said "An eligible iMovie application was not found in the location /Applications." why is this happening and what can i do?

If you downloaded the iMovie 7.1.4 update from the Apple website, it only works with older iMovie 7 versions. As you have iMovie HD, you will have to upgrade to iMovie 7 first, included in iLife '08.
iLife '08 is the most recent version for Mac OS X 10.4.11, and you can buy it at Amazon or eBay > http://www.amazon.com/Apple-iLife-08-OLD-VERSION/dp/B000BX5JQG

  • Why can't i install iMovie or iPhoto on a 10.5.8

i tried to download imovie and iphoto from app store and it tell me i need to update my software, but i go to my updates and there is no new updates =( help please really want to purchase imovie and iphoto

I don't know what versions they're selling or what they cost or what OS they require. Ask or look at the site.
I do know that you can get iLife '09 or '11 for a reasonable price and they also include iDVD, GarageBand and iWeb, which may be more economical overall (not sure). iDVD in particular is handy for creating DVDs if you plan on doing that. '11 requires OS X 10.6.

  • Why can I not install fonts? Office for Mac will not recognize them?

My wife and I tried many times to install several fonts that we could use in Microsoft Office for Mac. Even though it said they were installed in the Mac, we could not see them in Word. We are new to the Apple products. We are not novice computer users, just novice Mac users. The font book shows them installed. We tried to choose several of the font families to add the fonts to. We could not see them there either. My wife does some foreign correspondence and likes to use pretty script fonts (TTF). Please help if you can.
    THANKS IN ADVANCE
    Billy

    Sorry also not.
I signed in to the App Store (and to itunes store just to make sure) with both my apple ids but i do not have the sub- section 'Hidden Purchases' within 'Itunes in the cloud' section. I guess I do not have hidden purchases then...
More interestingly: I checked the 'Top Charts' section in the AppStore and under category 'Top Free' all the iWork stuff (Numbers, Keynote, pages etc) shows up! But it has a price (e.g. numbers = 2000Yen) underneath... very strange.
Somewhat the app store knows that it should be free for me but the price is not displayed as 'Free'...
    Help please.

  • Why can I not install Windows 8 on my Mac?

    Hello,
I have been trying to install Windows on my Mac lately, and whenever I try to partition the drive, I hit a wall. It claims that I need to reformat my primary partition and try again. I have already done this and restored all of my data. My computer is current and updated, I cannot imagine what else to try. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you kindly,

  • Why can't I install MacOSX Lion on a Mac Mini with 10.6.8, 2GB RAM, and CPU upgraded to Core2 Duo?

I have an older Intel Mac Mini running fully updated Snow Leopard with an upgraded CPU (Core2 Duo), RAM (2GB), and hard drive.
Supposedly, this should be compatible with Lion, but the App Store refuses to download it.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

It's not the graphics card it is the fact that it is an "upgraded"
system.  Lion, as with any OSX install, is based on the
original computer ID.  If the ID indicated that it was not
a model that was shipped with a CPU that meets the minimum
    requirements it will not install.
The reason I say it is not the graphics card, is that my
Macbook has that card and Lion installed without issue.  It
was, however, equipped with a Core2Duo processor.

  • Why can't I install mountain lion on my macbook pro?

It still works.  I bought it in 2007.  What will I have to give up?

Click on the Apple Menu's, "About This Mac," "More Info," "System Report," "Hardware," to identify your Mac. You need to have a MacBook Pro 3.1 as a minimum to support ML.

I am currently using CS3 and desperately need to upgrade to CS6, CS6 needs 10.6.8 or 10.7.
Do you think its possible to get Mountain Lion working with this computer or am I much better off upgrading completely to a new Mac,
    Really appreciate all help,
    Davod

You have the original Mac Pro. Just look at your chart for the production line dats and when yours was produced. It is not an early 2008 Mac Pro.
