Why can't I install MacOSX Lion on a Mac Mini with 10.6.8, 2GB RAM, and CPU upgraded to Core2 Duo?

I have an older Intel Mac Mini running fully updated Snow Leopard with an upgraded CPU (Core2 Duo), RAM (2GB), and hard drive.
Supposedly, this should be compatible with Lion, but the App Store refuses to download it.
Any ideas?
Thanks.

It's not the graphics card it is the fact that it is an "upgraded"
system.  Lion, as with any OSX install, is based on the
original computer ID.  If the ID indicated that it was not
a model that was shipped with a CPU that meets the minimum
requirements it will not install.
The reason I say it is not the graphics card, is that my
Macbook has that card and Lion installed without issue.  It
was, however, equipped with a Core2Duo processor.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in safe mode.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then copy it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
Triple-click the line of text below to select it:
    for k in /Sy*/L*/Ex*/{,.?}*.kext; do test -f "$k/Contents/Info.plist" && /usr/libexec/PlistBuddy -c "Print :CFBundleIdentifier" "$_" | egrep -qv "apple|Accusys|ArcMSR|ATTO|CalDigit|HighPoint|hp-fax|JMicron|print|SoftRAID|stex" && echo $k; done | open -f -a TextEdit
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Post the contents of that window, if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. You can then close the TextEdit window. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that. No typing is involved in this step.
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
sudo defaults read com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook | open -f -a TextEdit
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type it carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Heed that warning, but don't post it. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.
    Step 3
    Repeat with this line:
    ls -1A /e*/mach* {,/}L*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts 2> /dev/null | open -f -a TextEdit
Important: If you formerly synchronized with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, anonymize it before posting.
    Step 4
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of every login item' 2> /dev/null | open -f -a TextEdit
Remember, Steps 1-4 are all copy-and-paste — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.
    You can then quit Terminal.

have installed windows 7 using boot camp on my mac mini with os x lion on it. But when i loaded windows 7 up it was working fine but then windows 7 wouldn't connect to wifi. It says i have to install drivers but i don't know how to.

First, hold the X key while your Mac is starting to start in OS X. Then, open Boot Camp Assistant (in /Applications/Utilities), follow the steps and mark the option to download the Windows support software. It will be downloaded onto a USB drive or DVD.
Finally, start in Windows, access to the DVD or USB drive through Windows Explorer and run the installer. When the Windows support software is installed, restart

  • Networking Lion Server on Mac Mini with XP

On my XP desktop I can ping to my Mac Mini with Lion Server. I can ping the IP Address of the Mac Mini from the command line. When I try to map a network drive when I enter the ip address\username(on the Mac Mini) another screen appears asking for username and password. I can't get past that screen. When I enter in the username and password of my Admin account on the Mac Mini it wipes out the information and l am left with a blank username and password dialog box.
What can I do so the XP box can see files on the Mac Mini? The Mac Mini does not need to see information on the XP box.
    Thank you for looking.

  • Why can I not install fonts? Office for Mac will not recognize them?

My wife and I tried many times to install several fonts that we could use in Microsoft Office for Mac. Even though it said they were installed in the Mac, we could not see them in Word. We are new to the Apple products. We are not novice computer users, just novice Mac users. The font book shows them installed. We tried to choose several of the font families to add the fonts to. We could not see them there either. My wife does some foreign correspondence and likes to use pretty script fonts (TTF). Please help if you can.
    THANKS IN ADVANCE
    Billy

    Sorry also not.
I signed in to the App Store (and to itunes store just to make sure) with both my apple ids but i do not have the sub- section 'Hidden Purchases' within 'Itunes in the cloud' section. I guess I do not have hidden purchases then...
More interestingly: I checked the 'Top Charts' section in the AppStore and under category 'Top Free' all the iWork stuff (Numbers, Keynote, pages etc) shows up! But it has a price (e.g. numbers = 2000Yen) underneath... very strange.
Somewhat the app store knows that it should be free for me but the price is not displayed as 'Free'...
    Help please.

  • Why can't I install iTunes 10.5 on my PC with Vista?

    Hi guys,
I'm really frustrated as I had trouble updating to iTunes 10.5 on my PC that uses Vista, so I uninstalled the old version and everything associated with Apple to try and install from scratch.
The iTunes 10.5 software appears to download correctly and saved to my hard drive but when I open the .exe file it comes up with a progress bar for about half a second before it disappears and nothing else happens.
I have tried both versions available on the apple website but neither load.
    Any ideas what's going on??
    Cheers

It seems to be an update issue under Vista. Therefore I would try to klick right the Setup.exe-File and then install iTunes with XP-ServicePack3-Compatibility (and as Administrator).

  • Fresh headless install of Lion (client) on Mac Mini (Server)

    All,
I have a Mac Mini (Server) with two internal drives.  I have successfully been running Lion (client) headless (no monitor or keyboard) for some time since I had originally 10.6 installed and upgraded to 10.7 using the Mac App Store.  For backup I nightly clone my primary internal drive to the secondary drive using SuperDuper.
I'm having a problem with my Lion install which means that I want to do a fresh install.  I'm stuck as to how to do this.  I've tried:
    1. Boot from primary disk; run Install Lion app; system reboots, freshly installs the O/S, with Screen Sharing on but doesn't wipe the disk, leaving the problem that I'm trying to get rid off.
    2. Boot from the secondary disk; format the primary disk and do a fresh install on the primary disk.  However this doesn't work as once the install is underway and it's re-booted onto the primary disk screen sharing is disabled and so I can't see what's going on.
(I know that it's possible to use screen sharing during a server install with no username and the first eight characters of the serial number - but this doesn't work with the Lion client installs.)
    Anybody with any ideas?
    Thanks in advance - Jonathan.

Here's what I would do. It might be handy to run a keyboard and monitor to the Mini at least during this process.
Reboot into the Recovery partition. Once in, launch Disk Utility. Wipe your boot volume and repartion. Create single partition called 'Server HD'. Now, quit Disk Utility and select the option to reinstall Lion. Install it on your new partition.
This should work just fine for you.

  • Can Lion run on Mac Mini with 1.83 GHz and 2GB RAM?

    Hey guys!
at first, sorry for my may bad english.
After years of windows strangulation i want to upgrade to a mac. but, there is a tiny problem: i dont have enough money for a new mac mini cause i'm a student und things like that.
But i have enough money to buy me a mac on eBay . Maybe a "old" mac mini, but its a mac. On eBay germany (my homeland) i found a few mac mini's there in my budget. There's the Mac mini 2.1 with 1,83GHz and 1 GB RAM. So, i read that that dont work anyway because the RAM is to low.
Now my question: when i buy such a machine and upgrade the RAM to 2GB, would Lion run on it?
    Sincere regards, Manuel from germany.
Oh and Steve, if you read that, that's fine by me if you want to donate me a old mac from you.

You are in luck.  The Mac Mini 2,1 is the oldest Mac Mini that with an upgrade to 2GB or 3GB will run Lion. That said. you'll want to purchase Snow Leopard while it is still available, if the machine hasn't yet been upgraded to Snow Leopard, as that is your key to get Lion installed after the RAM is upgraded.  This is a user to user forum, so it is unlikely "Steve" will be viewing your post.

  • Hi I buy OS X lion to my mac mini I but the download gift card and start it but my internet connection id not fished also i can't download it agin what can I do?

I download it in my mac mini but the internet is cut. Also I lost it and I can't find the file or download it agine

you have to go to where you have a good internet connection.
the unfinished OSX file is in the Aplications folder, do not throw it away so that it can resume the download when you are downloading the next time.

  • Why can't I open folders (pictures) on my mac mini - it says I don't have access

I can't open the Pictures or Music or any other folders that I have in Users on my hard drive

    Hey BDAqua,
Thanks for that. Made me think. I used one of my other logins by accident. For some reason my Mac MIni will let me log in using one of two usernames. So that was an easy fix that I should have known. I appreiciate your suggestion.

  • Why can't I install mountain lion on OSX 10.6.8 MACBOOK PRO?

I downloaded the mountain lion install app and now i can't install it I get the "This disk cannot be used to startup your computer" error when I try and install. If i back out to the main install page and try it again then i get this error "OSX cannot be installed on Macintosh HD". I have read similar posts and done appropriate responses such as verifying and reparing the HD. I have a Time Capsule that I backup to and I've tried disconnecting from it and ensured its not backing up during my attempts to install. Nothing seems to work. HELP!!!!
    Computer Stats:
    Early 2009 13" Macbook Pro
    Model identifier: macbookpro 5,5
    ram: 8GB
    HD space available: 60GB
    Processor: Duo core 2.53
Nothing out of the ordinary. I don't have any crazy setups, pretty much straight out of the box.

It was partitioned at one point when I had windows 7 on a boot camp partition. When I deleted it I formed it back into one partition. The only disk that shows up to choose in the installer is my main HD. Hope the pic helps.

  • Why can't i install Mtn Lion on MPB runnin Lion 10.7.5??

    I have a 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    2GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM  MacBook Pro
I cannot get Mountain Lion to install.
It quits afrter a while saying some BS about it cant do it...
theres no reaon it shouldnt....i fit the specs!
anyone else run into this poo????

Check the requirements here > Apple - Upgrade your Mac to OS X Mountain Lion.
Must be a MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
If you are sure your Mac qualifies..
Make sure there's enough free space on the startup disk. Click your Apple menu icon top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac > More Info then select Storage from the menu.
Make sure there's at least 15% available storage space.
    -  Temporarily disable anti virus software if installed.
    -  Apps such as Little Snitch, Net Nanny, and Hands Off can prevent apps from downloading including Mountain Lion.
    -  Third party download managers are not compatible with the App Store.
For downloading Mountain Lion from the App Store, a high speed (broadband) internet connection is strongly recommended by Apple as noted here > iTUNES STORE - MAC APP STORE - TERMS AND CONDITIONS
Keep in mind, If you need to reinstall OS X or repair the the startup disk using Mountain Lion Recovery, that requires broadband (high speed) access to the internet via Wi-Fi or an Ethernet connection. OS X is downloaded over the internet form Apple when OS X Recovery is used for reinstallation.
Mountain Lion is a 4.34GB file. If you are using a slow internet connection, the download may be timing out before it can finish. Your ISP determines your download speeds. Check with your ISP for upgrade options.

  • 500 gb new hard drive with 4 gb ram .. why can't i install mountain lion???

Sorry for the question because I'm sure the answer is out there.  But I've searched and searched and don't know why I can't download mountain lion!?!
I have a mid 07 macbook and have replaced the hard drive with 500 gb seagate and the memory with 4 gb ram.  Shouldn't I be able to downloan it with those specs?? It keeps telling me I can't.  I'm runinng 10.6.8 right now.
Thanks for your help in advance

It's mainly the video card. The Models 2,1 through 4,1 have video cards with non-upgradeable 32bit drivers. The model 5,1 Late 2008 and newer have at least the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M with 64bit drivers. Mountain Lion requires 64bit native drivers. Mountain Lion no longer supports Intel's GMA 950 or GMA X3100 graphics processors.
While Lion used some 32 bit and a lot of 64 bit code, Mountain Lion is pure 64 bit, which excludes more systems than Lion did. It's not something you can add memory to, for example, as it involves the base architecture.

The first step in Upgrading... is to Snow Leopard = OS X 10.6.x
It is Not available as a download... It is a Paid Upgrade.
    Do this first...
Check that your Mac meets the System Requirements for Snow Leopard...
    Snow Leopard Tech Specs
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
If so... Purchase a Snow Leopard Install Disc...
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
    Other countries...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57
After the Successful Install, run Software Update to get the latest updates for Snow Leopard.
Be sure to make a Backup of your Current System Before Upgrading...
Next... Check that your Mac meets the Requirements for Mountain Lion.
    Upgrade to Mountain Lion
With Regard to ML...  Check here for compatibility of 3rd party Software you may be using... Also note that Rosetta is no longer supported in Lion and Mountain Lion...
    http://roaringapps.com/apps:table
You should also consider more RAM... Get the Maximum you can for your Mac...
It is important to get the Correct and Matching RAM
