Why can't I install Mountain Lion on my Macbook Air?

I get a "not compatible" message when I try to download from the app store, even thought it meets the spec requirements. Any ideas? It's a late 2008 Macbook Air (bought in August of '08 from the online Apple store) I'm currently running OS X 10.6.8

Click on the Apple Menu's, "About This Mac," "More Info," "System Report," "Hardware," to identify your Mac. You need to have a MacBook Pro 3.1 as a minimum to support ML.

That I'm not sure of. If it were me I'd still buy a copy of SL as it's cheap and partition the hard drive so I have two OS on the same disc, (make the SL partiton about 25GB). You can use one to trouble shoot the other sometimes. It also means you can boot from DVD which I like.

Why can't I install mountain lion on OSX 10.6.8 MACBOOK PRO?

I downloaded the mountain lion install app and now i can't install it I get the "This disk cannot be used to startup your computer" error when I try and install. If i back out to the main install page and try it again then i get this error "OSX cannot be installed on Macintosh HD". I have read similar posts and done appropriate responses such as verifying and reparing the HD. I have a Time Capsule that I backup to and I've tried disconnecting from it and ensured its not backing up during my attempts to install. Nothing seems to work. HELP!!!!

Early 2009 13" Macbook Pro
Model identifier: macbookpro 5,5
ram: 8GB
HD space available: 60GB
Processor: Duo core 2.53
Nothing out of the ordinary. I don't have any crazy setups, pretty much straight out of the box.

It was partitioned at one point when I had windows 7 on a boot camp partition. When I deleted it I formed it back into one partition. The only disk that shows up to choose in the installer is my main HD. Hope the pic helps.

500 gb new hard drive with 4 gb ram .. why can't i install mountain lion???

Sorry for the question because I'm sure the answer is out there. But I've searched and searched and don't know why I can't download mountain lion!?!
I have a mid 07 macbook and have replaced the hard drive with 500 gb seagate and the memory with 4 gb ram. Shouldn't I be able to downloan it with those specs?? It keeps telling me I can't. I'm runinng 10.6.8 right now.

It's mainly the video card. The Models 2,1 through 4,1 have video cards with non-upgradeable 32bit drivers. The model 5,1 Late 2008 and newer have at least the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M with 64bit drivers. Mountain Lion requires 64bit native drivers. Mountain Lion no longer supports Intel's GMA 950 or GMA X3100 graphics processors.
While Lion used some 32 bit and a lot of 64 bit code, Mountain Lion is pure 64 bit, which excludes more systems than Lion did. It's not something you can add memory to, for example, as it involves the base architecture.

It is Not available as a download... It is a Paid Upgrade.

You have to Upgrade to 10.8, not update. 10.7 and 10.8 are different operating systems. Each has its own set of updates.
If you puchased Mountain Lion (10.8) for your iMac, then you can download and install Mountain Lion onto your MacBook (if it is compatible). If the iMac came with Mountain Lion preinstalled, you will need to purchase Mountain Lion from the App Store to get it on your MacBook.

10.7 Lion is still available from Apple. You will have to call Apple Customer Care 1-800-692-7753 or 1-800-676-2775. to purchase it. Then within 3 days you will get an email with a code which you can use to download Lion from the App Store. The price is $19.99.
You must have at least a Late 2006 Core 2 Duo model 2,1 MacBook.
Lion will require at least 2gb of RAM but really needs 4gb to run smoothly.

When System Profiler comes up select Applications under Software. Then look under Kind to see if any of your applications are listed as Power PC. Universal and Intel will run under Lion.

As a rule the Mac App Store won;t let you buy and download Mountain Lion if your hardware doesn't support it, so the first question is did you get ML from the MAS?
If so then what procedure are you following to install the OS? You wrote that

It depends. If you purchase an OS upgrade it can be installed on up to 5 devices that are registered with your ID. However if you purchase a computer with that OS you cannot install it on other computers you own. The OS that comes with your computer is tied to the computer and not your ID.

I've just installed Mountain Lion on my Macbook pro and cannot now open Preview. I've partly solved the reading of PDF documents by installing Adobe Reader, but Preview is also stalling the log out process. Restart your mac in Safe Mode by holding down the 'shift' key while it powers up. You'll know if you've entered Safe Mode correctly if you see a progress bar underneath the grey Apple logo screen. Let go of the shift key when you see that, wait for the progess bar to complete then log in.
After log in, go to
 > System Preferences... Users & Groups and remove everything from the 'Login Items' tab.
If you have any anti-virus software installed (Sophos, F-Secure, VirusBarrier, Mackeeper) uninstall it while in Safe Mode.
Restart your mac normally and test.
