Why can't I install on os X 10.6 on my macbook pro 3, 1?

I'm trying to upgrade to Lion, but first need to upgrade to 10.6.  I have  a disk (my husband has it for his newer macbook pro).  I've inserted the disk and try to start installer, but get a warning that 10.6 "cannot be installed on this computer."  I believe I have all the system requirements.  Help!

So, do I have to buy 10.6 beofre I'm able to get 10.7?
Yes, unless you buy the $69 Lion USB and fresh install it.

 What are Rosetta PPC programs?
These are programs that originally ran on PowerPC G5 processors Mac's used to come with.
When Apple swtiched processors there was a period where the operating system supported programs designed for either a G5 or a Intel processor.
10.5.8 is the operating system limit for PowerPC G5 processor based computers.
10.5 was two operating systems in one, it could run on PowerPC or Intel processors.
10.6 which only runs on Intel processors, has a compatability layer called Rosetta that allows the programs from 10.5 to run on 10.6    10.6 can run on 32 bit or 64 bit Intel processors.
10.7 does away with Rosetta, only runs on 64 bit Intel processors.
So in your case most older programs that you may have purchased were written for 10.5 or will work with 10.6 w/Rosetta will no longer run on 10.7 if you upgrade.
You will also likely have to buy iLife again, as Lion does not have it because your upgrading the operating system and upgrades don't' come with free iLife (it's only free on new machines gray disks), you have to keep using the old ones which are Rosetta based and Rosetta is not supported on 10.7. so you won't be able to use the old iLife at all.
If you upgrade to 10.7 you may have to buy all new versions of third party software, which some can be quite expensive if your using stuff like Adobe programs like Photoshop, Illustrator, Office etc., etc. costing you thousands of dollars you didn't expect to have to pay. All for a "older" machine that doesn't have the horsepower like the newer ones do.
10.6 is excellent right now, everything "just works" all the bugs are out, it's stable and reliable. It's nearly exactly to what your already used to using on 10.5 with slight video speed improvements and a few great new features.
10.7 is still in world of hurt, it's getting better but it's got another 6-7 months in my opinion and it's a world different than 10.5 or 10.6.

I think for you, since Lion offers little and you strike me as a person who doesn't like a lot of change, is to use 10.6 and put off going to 10.7 and get it with a new hardware purchase. Then use both machines at once until your up and over Lions "differences".
Your present machine is more than 4 years old already, Apple has you in it's sights for a hardware upgrade, I think in your case it's a waste of money and effort to get a older box up on Lion with more RAM, brand new programs and $69 if all your going to get a new one shortly.
I'd say give Lion another 6-8 months, then buy a new machine with Lion on it and all new versions of software then, not now. By then more bugs will be worked out, third party software will have updates, printer drivers and other software will work and you will have less stress.
6-8 months later Lion will be a LOT more stable than it is now as Apple's interest is getting things to work on it's newer hardware, not so much on older hardware.

  • Why can't I install mountain lion on OSX 10.6.8 MACBOOK PRO?

I downloaded the mountain lion install app and now i can't install it I get the "This disk cannot be used to startup your computer" error when I try and install. If i back out to the main install page and try it again then i get this error "OSX cannot be installed on Macintosh HD". I have read similar posts and done appropriate responses such as verifying and reparing the HD. I have a Time Capsule that I backup to and I've tried disconnecting from it and ensured its not backing up during my attempts to install. Nothing seems to work. HELP!!!!
    Computer Stats:
    Early 2009 13" Macbook Pro
    Model identifier: macbookpro 5,5
    ram: 8GB
    HD space available: 60GB
    Processor: Duo core 2.53
Nothing out of the ordinary. I don't have any crazy setups, pretty much straight out of the box.

It was partitioned at one point when I had windows 7 on a boot camp partition. When I deleted it I formed it back into one partition. The only disk that shows up to choose in the installer is my main HD. Hope the pic helps.

Why can't I see my reminders from my iPad on my macbook pro?

Reminders will only appear in your Mac if you are using OS X Mountain Lion and you have the Reminders app. Open Apple menu > About this Mac, and check the OS X version. If it's not 10.8, you don't have OS X Mountain Lion.
If you have OS X Mountain Lion, open System Preferences > iCloud, and mark Reminders

Open  > About this Mac, and tell me which Mac OS X version you are using. You need OS X 10.8 to install 10.8.4.
Then, if you can't install 10.8.4 from the Mac App Store, install OS X 10.8.4 using the Combo version > http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1659?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

  • Why can't I connect my iPhone 4 via bluetooth with my Macbook Pro Version 10.7.5?

How come that the bluetooth connection won't work. On the computer shows it is paired and is working properly while on the iphone shows not connected.

The only thing you can do with bluetooth and your mac is for the mac to share the internet connection using personal hotspot on your phone. Other than that you cannot use bt to transfer files or sync the phone with the mac.

  • Why can I not access my Airport Extreme with Bonjour from my MacBook Pro?

Just like the title says. I the Airport Extreme does not show up under Bonjour in Safari. I can access it from the network but not Bonjour. Weird.

Bonjour, as you may already know, is Apple's implementation of zero-configuration networking.
It takes three things to work:
Host Addressing - It requires network devices that support Link-Local addressing, i.e., self-addressing on either, or both, IPv4 & IPv6. ARP is used to verify that no other device on the local network is using the same address. For Macs, self assigned IPv4 Link-Local addressing became available with OS X 10.0. IPv6 always supported this feature. Verify that you have IPv6 Link-Local, as a minimum, running on your Mac. System Preferences > Network > Wi-Fi or Ethernet (as appropriate) > Advanced > TCP/IP tab > Configure IPv6 > Either "Automatically" or "Link-local only."
Host Naming - Device naming is dependent on Multicast DNS (mDNS). This is the ".local" name for the device. It will create one unless you enter one in System Preferences > Sharing > Computer Name. mDNS will issue a Query command to see if any other device is using the same name. mDNS is available with all versions of OS X. Windows devices would require Bonjour for Windows. mDNS requires UDP port 5353 to be opened on the device's software firewall. Note: This is not the same as the router's firewall.
Service Discovery - Requires the first two items to be working and available. Note: A problematic /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.mDNSResponder.plist file may prevent your Mac from advertising its services.

  • Why can't I install Snow Leopard on my videos hard drive?

I have a Mac Pro with four hard drives. Lion is on the primary drive but I need Snow Leopard for a legacy app. My plan is to install Snow Leopard on a hard drive that I use for video projects, and then restart from that drive when I need to use the old app. The problem is that the Snow Leopard installation disk says that it can't install onto the videos hard drive unless I partition the hard drive, which will erase all the data. Why can't it install onto the videos hard drive? There's no operating system on that hard drive. The hard drive has folders for Final Cut Express Projects, iMovie Events, iMovie Projects, DVDs movies I've ripped, a folder of music, and an iDVD project. What do I need to remove to enable installing Snow Leopard?

If I understand what you are saying you have a drive with "stuff" already on it and you want to install a version of OSX on to it while still retaining that "stuff".  If that's what you want to do you cannot do that mainly because there's already "stuff" on that drive.
The only way you can do this is to either of the following:
    a. Copy the "stuff" off that drive to another drive.  Install the OS.  Copy the "stuff" back on to the newly created boot drive.
    b. Copy the "stuff" off that drive on to another drive.  Partition the drive into at least 2 partitions; one for the boot and one for the "stuff".  Install the OS into one of the partitions.  Copy the "stuff" back to the other partition.
Either way, if you want to use that disk for a boot disk, you got to get that "stuff" out of the way to do the OSX install on to that disk.

Why can't I install iTunes on Windows RT? Is Microsoft deciding what software I can use?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Theoretically, Microsoft is deciding what apps you can install. In Windows RT, you can only install apps from the Windows Store and they must be ARM-based, things that Apple and iTunes don't meet, so you can't use iTunes in Windows RT
