Why can't I mark my own responses as Solved?

Sometimes I post questions in the forums and end up researching the solution myself. I would like to be able to mark my own response, which solves my issue, as the Solution to the problem but the way this forum is setup doesn't allow me to do so. Why is that?

When a post is marked as Helpful or Solved, the member who wrote that post is awarded points - 5 or 10, respectively. Points accumulate to affect a member's Level, and advancing levels earn the member a few extra privileges, plus the 10 members with the most points in a forum are recognized on the Top Users list.
If you could mark your own post as solved, you could falsely enhance your level status. Some forums here (iPods) would be rife with users posting for that exact purpose, and would clutter up the forums for those searching for actual help. I have actually seen a member here who created multiple accounts so that one account could inflate the other. By cheating, he placed himself on the Top Users list in a new forum. It's a pathetic and sad fact that people will abuse the system, but the system tries to minimize that potential.
What does benefit other users is when you mark your thread as Solved and post the solution that you found.

What is the deal with Users marking their own responses as correct?
I go under the assumption that if something is marked as Answered, it means that I've SEEN THE ANSWER.
If someone other than ME marks MY question as ANSWERED, it drops off my Radar.

First, capitalizing is really not needed. I do understand your frustration, but honestly...
Now, I will come clean and admit that on occasion, in my role as a moderator and editor of SCN, I have marked posts as answered. This will usually happen if I see that the post is a number of days old without a response to what I believe (OK, know) was the correct answer. I do this for a few reasons:
1) Many OPs do not mark their posts as answered. Would be nice if they did...
2) Many OPs make the answer as "Helpful", even though it is DE answer. I will then change this to answered.
3) Posts marked as answered are much more likely to be looked at than abandoned post with no further feedback as to the posted answers being correct or not.
4) Marked posts make it obvious that these forums are active and do provide answers consistently.
I could go on, but I hope I get my view across(?).
Oh. BTW., I may mark my own replies as "Answered" . It is not something I do to gain points. For one, I do not get points for marking my replies as "Answered" (it the way SCN works). For two, I really do not care about the number of points I get. I do not get measured on it and there is just nothing in it for me. Other than keeping the forums alive, vibrant and well.

Why can't I access my own wifi? why do I get a blue screen on start up or after watching a netflix movie, and why is it getting so hot?

My mac has been showing a blue screen on start up and before shut down, especially after netflix. Is it silverlight? Why can't I get on my own wifi? It defaults to a linkys public network, I try to access the secure network, type my password, enter, and I get connection timeout.

I was re-decorating my blogger .. then I got the 'Bad Request Error 400' .. I re-formatted my computer, reloaded all .. I can now access my Blogger sites .. Don't know what the problem is/was, but I solved it by reloading my computer to Out-of-Box condition, and all is perfect now .. I have an alert set up for this Error 400 .. Masses of people are having problems daily ..

Why can't I edit my own thread?

Why can't I edit a thread that I started (all I want to do is to uncheck the "Mark this thread as a question")? I can edit my replies to the thread but not the first post.

I can confirm what Craig has stated, and it was not just spelling mistakes.
There were some folks going around updating their questions (for example when the requirement was counter-questioned) and others who deleted their question once they had the answer.
The famous "Why 'x'", was answered with a "Why not 'x'"...

Why can i not find my own private credentials

          hello,
          I have written an authenticator using the JAAS framework as described in the manuals
          for developing a security provider.
          Basically the user types in a username and a password.
          I come into the login module,
          store the username into a WLSUserImpl principal,then add the principal to the
          subject.
          Then i create a javax.resource.spi.PasswordCredential with a username and a password
          and pass this to the privateCredentialSet of the Subject.
          So far so good.
          Next , some time later , i access an ejb, which needs the service of a connector.
          Before i come into the connector , weblogic passes via my own credential mapper
          also written according to manual for developing security providers.
          Essentially i don't need the credential mapping , since i know this password already
          when i did the authentication(the password for authentication is the same as the
          password
          needed for the JCA connector).
          I come into the credential mapper and weblogic gives me a requestor and an initiator
          subject
          but none of them carry my private credentials which i stored into the subject
          when i was in
          the authentication module.
          In the credentialmapper i am supposed to create a PasswordCredential.
          For the sake of testing i create phony PasswordCredential with a phony user and
          phony password.
          Finallly i come into the connector
          which has a method createmanagedConnection and which passes a subject and a requestinfo
          and a managedconnection factory.
          The suject that i receive is a resource principal with a private credential carrying
          the phony user
          and password.
          Of couse i need the user and password entered during authentication,
          how do get them???
          Also i noticed when i configured my credential mapper,
          that weblogic calls the getCredentials method twice in succession,
          I don't understand why two calls is neccessary

Is the problem that you cannot find the hardware in MAX at all or that it requires refreshing for it to appear?
When you change/replace the hardware in your RT PXI system, you have to refresh the view in MAX in order for it to detect the changes - this will not occur automatically. You can refresh all items in MAX (View > Refresh) or you can refresh each item individually when it is selected. Keep in mind it may take some time for the hardware to initialize before you can detect it in MAX.

Why can't Verizon fix its own errors

Very simple problem. I have an IMAC and am paying for McAfee internet security. It is beyond Verizons ability to install this product to my computer because they have an erroneous "order pending" for several months. They can't seem to cancel the false order pending which somehow prevents my downloading the security package. I have spoke with a half dozen supervisors and agents, they still can't fix their own system.{edited for privacy}
The insult is added by promises to call back at specific times. ALL of which were not honored.
Four different supervisors looked at this case and all were unable to fix it. Requests to speak with a supervisors' supervisor were denied.
You would very hard pressed to find less competent customer service.

Before the agent can begin assisting you, they will need to collect further information from you.Please go to your profile page for the forum, and look in the middle, right at the top where you will find an area titled "My Support Cases". You can reach your profile page by clicking on your name beside your post, or at the top left of this page underneath the title of the board.
Under “My Support Cases” you will find a link to the private board where you and the agent may exchange information. This should be checked on a frequent basis as the agent may be waiting for information from you before they can proceed with any actions. To ensure you know when they have responded to you, at the top of your support case there is a drop down menu for support case options. Open that and choose "subscribe".
Please keep all correspondence regarding your issue in the private support portal.

Billing Errors - Why can't adobe manage their own billing???????

Our billing information is correct, fyi:
This is the error message we are now getting after a week of trying to update our new expiry date:
"We're sorry, the billing information on file could not be used for this payment. Please update your billing information." with no link to fix, report, or manage this in any way.
For an IT company, it's pretty pathetic that you can't even take a credit card online and update your own billing information, so companies can purchase your services.
Please fix.

I did try Safari as well as Firefox. I was able to update my credit card information (it worked in FF but not Safari), but when we try to add a new user, the message still says, "We're sorry, the billing information on file could not be used for this payment. Please update your billing information."

Why can't I pickup my own hotspot signal on my iphone4

I use my mobile hotspot on my iPhone4 to operate my laptop and other devises, but I can not receive a signal on my own phone which is producing it, what's wrong, anyone?

In order to produce the mobile hotspot, the phone must be connected to the cellular network. The phone can't be connected to a cellular network and a WiFi network at the same time. From what I can understand of your question, your phone is working correctly.

Why can't I use my own credit card while part of a family share?

This more of a suggestion/rant for Apple. Why in the world would you prevent users from purchasing apps in the apps store? To make adult children go back to "mommy and daddy" to pay for things is just nuts. My app purchases have halted because I don't want the hassle of having to go back to my parents and find out which purchases were mine or their's or who owes who. Huge huge fail guys... please fix ASAP. I'll even go for not being able to download their purchases (I just want the shared calendar feature and family Find my Phone).
Do some research with your users next time about this... great idea for people with teenagers, not great for a multi-generational family who love apple products.

Why can't i read lin slave response in xnet

we have developed a small lin application that starts xnet schedulle and sends master frames and headers.
I am trying to read all the frames on the bus and unfortunately i only see the master frames. The slave headers from master are not filled by the slave.
We are using single point frame approach.
Also, i have observed that when i disconnect the slave from the network, the slave headers are send very fast(as it should be). But when i
connect the slave, the headers are sent more rare and the payload is not completed by the slave.
The slave is working ok! because we send frames manually without the schedulle and the slave always responded good.
Which seems to be the problem?

It's hard to say, can you post your source? I've had success with LIN and XNet with signals, but haven't had a need to try frames yet. My setup is similar to what you described. I create two sessions for Signals Out Single-Point, and Signals In XY. Then I have a write LIN Schedule on the Signal Out session selecting a schedule from the database. Then I write Signal Single-Point on the Signal Output. Then periodically I read Signal XY using the Signal Input session. After doing this my read then returns all my signals once every 200ms or so, which is based on the schedule selected. I've never done frame on LIN but I assume it is similar.

Why can't I trigger my own .exs intruments?

I can trigger the built-in instruments with no problem. I can only trigger the instruments that I created if I open the EXS Instrument Editor for the instrument and click it with the mouse.
How do I fix this?

Assign your EXS to an instrument track and select the track. Make sure that your instrument is selected in your EXS.

Why can't users set their own defaults in the communities?

I could care less for the most part to get posts from a year or two ago when I search in the support communities. However, I can find no way to set my search preference. It is auto set to relevance. I'd prefer the have it set to Date. I searched for something regarding iMovie. I got hits that are totally irrelevant that go back to before the last two major changes in iMovie. What good is that?

HT3887 why oh why can I not transfer my own photos from my own iPhone to my own macbook pro via bluetooth? This is so antiquated!

I have an iphone that I use to take pics and just wondered why don't Iuse bluetooth instead of plugging it in each time...only to find apple won't let us do this. Is this still true? Seems like madness and a good reason to change...

Why can't I edit my own post?

not long ago I posted a response in a thread in the iWeb forums. When I was looking at a list of my recent posts, I realized I had made a grammatical error (I was posting in French for the benefit of a francophone user). When I returned to the thread, the "edit" icon was visible on my post, and when I click on "edit," I am sent to a page to edit my post but there is a red warning " You are not allowed to edit this message." Attempts to save the edits are unsuccessful. Any idea what's going on?

And no, I take none of this personally. I try to take it as being strictly business and nothing personal, just as Tom Hagen advised Sonny Corleone (and as Sonny later advised Michael).
Like you, I also miss the human touch, the Mac spirit, the sense of community that (in my view) used to pleasantly pervade these boards, and which (again, in my view) has been systematically eroded.
In the final analysis, however, viewing things through the "strictly business, nothing personal" prism is easier said than done -- look where it got Sonny.
