Why can't I open a new window?

Whenever I select "New Window" from under the "File" menu, nothing happens. The selection is shown as a blank under the "Window" menu. Upgraded to Firefox 5 hoping that would stop the problem, but the problem persists.

It seems like it was SEOpen 1.2, although I stopped enabling more add-ons once it started working and I had the main add-ons that I use frequently active again. So there are a couple of other ones that I have not re-activated and probably won't. But it seems like that one was the trouble-maker.

• Why can I not open a new window but I can open new tabs in V3.6.16?

I am running Firefox 3.6.16 on both my PC and my laptop. The program works fine on my PC, I can open both new windows and new tabs. However, on my laptop I can not open a new window. Tabs open just fine, but when I try to open a new window nothing happens. Also, when I close the program after trying to open a new window the program is still running but I have no Firefox window to work in and therefore have to go through the Task Manager to end the program. And when I re-open it, I get asked if I want to restore the session or start a new session. Is there a way to

• Why can't I open a new window now? I prefer a new window to a tab.

I like using Mozilla, I also like to open a new window, as opposed to a tab (that's just me I guess). I now have to Control W to get a window - can't the open be brought back? (and I don't always need the Private Window).

Hmm, how were you opening it before?
In Firefox 29 and higher, there is a menu button with 3 horizontal bars at the right end of the main toolbar. This should have "New Window" as an item. If you prefer to use the classic menu bar, and open a new window from the File menu, you can display the bar using any of these methods:
* right-click a blank area of the tab bar > Menu Bar
* right-click the "+" button on the tab bar > Menu Bar
* tap the Alt key to display the bar temporarily, then View > Toolbars > Menu Bar
* click the "3-bar" menu button > Customize > Show/Hide Toolbars
If New Window is not available and you only have New Private Window, then you may be in a private window already.
By the way, Ctrl+w should ''close'' the current tab, at least on Windows.

• When I right-click on a link, can I have "open in new window" first, like it used to be?

I prefer to open in new window when I right-click on a link. In this new version of firefox, open in tab is now on top. Can I have open in new window the first of the options?

You can rearrange the menu items with the Menu Editor extension.

• Using Firefox 5 in Windows 7, once I have Firefox open, I can no longer open a new window using the start button. How do I fix?

As I stated, I have Windows 7 on my laptop and have installed Firefox 5. I sometimes like to have multiple windows of the browser open. But, unlike any previous version of Firefox, now when I have the browser open, when I try to open a new window using the Start menu, it will not open one. I have to use Ctrl+N. Why did this change?
This may seem insignificant but it really hampers my work flow. For one, with other applications, Shift+N is what opens a new window. For two, I've been doing with with my browsers for years now and it's like second nature for me - having to remember that in Firefox it's Ctrl+N is a pain in my tuccus.
Firefox is my go to browser and I would like it to stay that way. Please find the solution for me! I have tried looking using Tools, Options, as well as looking at my start menu and taskbar options, and no dice.

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

• Why can I not open a new tab in the new Firefox? (via the + sign or Ctrl T)

In the new interface on Firefox (which started for me today ... May 2 ...), I cannot open a new tab via the "+" sign along the top or by using Ctrl + T. If I want more than one thing open at the same time, I need to open a "New Window", which doesn't make much sense. I don't necessarily want a bunch of windows but may need a few tabs open at the same time.

• Can't get "Open in new window" to work

Having my Macbook Pro on service I had to setup my good old Powerbook G4 again. The only stupid problem I have is that how ever I make the settings in Safari 5.0.1 it wont open any links in a new window. They always open in a new tab.
Even is the link is "open in new window" or what ever. What do I miss here?!? Is there other settings for Safari then the preferences in Safari?

Maybe my plist file is corrupted?
Could be. Open a Finder window. Select your Home Folder in the Sidebar on the left. It has a small house icon. Then open the Library folder then the Preferences folder. Move the com.apple.Safari.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Desktop.
Relaunch Safari. If Safari functions as it should, move that .plist file to the Trash.

• Why does firefox intermittantly open a new window when I click on an existing tab? This only happens when I have three or more tabs open.

Several times now Firefox 4.0.1, when clicking on a tab (three or more tabs open) I immediately moves that tab to it's own window and closes the tab in the existing window.

That is probably the "tear-off tabs" feature. A slight movement (usually downward) when clicking on an existing tab will cause that tab to "tear-off" and open in a new window. You can drag the tab back to the previous window. You can also install this add-on to stop the behavior: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/bug489729-disable-detach-and-t/

• Why does Firefox sometimes open a new window when I navigate to an existing tab?

I often have 7 or 8 tabs open in Firefox. Sometimes when I click on a tab, Firefox opens it in a new window instead of just going to that tab. I haven't figured out a pattern when it does this.

A very slight movement (usually downward) will cause the tab to "tear off"/"tear away" into a new window. You can drag the tab back to the original window from the new window.
You can install this Add-on to stop the "tear off"/"tear away" behavior:

• Can "Navigate" feature open in new window?

Hi everyone,
this should be an easy one, can the "Navigate" to other report/dashboard option be forced to open in a new window? If so, how?
thanks!
-Joe

Hi David,
Here's a little more detailed explanation of what I'm looking for. Suppose we have a financial report which is a vertical bar chart which shows total revenue by month. We've setup the interaction on the chart to Navigate to a detailed report for the month which is clicked on. Right now, when you click on the detailed report, it show up in the current web browser window you have open. I would like the report to show up in a new web browser window so that we can compare the details to the summary chart.
Do you have any idea how to accomplish that?
Thanks!
-Joe

• Why can't I open pdf in Windows 7/Int Ex 8?

Hi there
Since I upgraded my pc and it came with Windows 7 and Internet Explorer 8 I can no longer open a pdf file by clicking it. I have to go to the file location in my documents, right click it and then click on Open with.....
I keep forgetting and just click it like I always used to and word processor opens saying it cannot open the file. Is there a way that I can set the default to pdf rather than word as I rarely open a word document?
Many thanks

It appears as if Adobe Reader is not correctly installed. Try installing the latest version 9.2 from http://get.adobe.com/reader/ - make sure that you uncheck any unwanted software bundled with the download.
P.S. no, you don't need Flash Player to open PDF files.

• Why can't I open a new tab? The + is there, but when I click on it, nothing happens. I've even tried File - New Tab. Still nothing!

Suddenly, I am unable to open a new tab. I can click on a link and open a tab that way, but if I want to open several sites on my own, I have to open a new browser. I've tried clicking the +, and clicking File - New Tab. Neither are working. I've even checked Tools - Options - Tabs. That didn't work, either. Please help!

This issue can be caused by the Ask.com toolbar (Tools > Add-ons > Extensions)

• Why can't I open a new Tab with the "Plus" sign or "Command-T"?

If I want to open a New Tab, I either press "Command T" or select "New Tab" from the File menu, or click the little "plus" sign in my Tabs bar - - - right? None of them work. What am I missing?

This problem in is Firefox on your Mac?
May users have discovered this problem is caused by Conduit add-ons, such as a Conduit plugin and/or a "Community Toolbar" extension.
You can check for and disable extensions on the Add-ons page. Either:
* Command+Shift+a
* "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
In the left column, click Extensions. Then, if in doubt, disable.
Often a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.
Does that help with the "+" button? If so, could you name the specific extension that caused the problem?
You might also check the Plugins section of the Add-ons page. You can use "Never Activate" to disable plugins that you don't ordinarily use.
