Why can't I open a Numbers document saved to my MacBook Pro desktop?

I was trying to open an existing Numbers document saved to my desktop. It took me to the App Store, but I didn't have access to a Wireless network. If it needed an update, why does it require the update to open an existing/previously saved document? Very frustrating and completely embarrassed in front of my audience!!!

If you recently updated to Mavericks and updated the Numbers to 3.0 then it is likely you are trying to open a Numbers 3.0 file with Numbers 2.3.

Be sure you are careful about which version you are launching and using to open files. If you want to be able to open a file in Numbers 2.3 then you should continue using Numbers 2.3 (which is located in the folder "/Applications/iWork '09")
If you already opened a Numbers file in 3.0 and saved if but want to open in 2.3 you can export from Numbers 3.0 by using the menu item "File > Export To > Numbers '09..."

In the search box, type '''power''' and then pause until the list is filtered. If you have these, try changing the action to "Always Ask":

It's possible that if you don't have Microsoft Office installed, you might not have those listed.

I open Word documents on my Mac using Pages and textedit without any problems.
I also have a copy of OpenOffice and it can also open Word documents without any problems.
Could you please provide more details on exactly what you mean when you say you having troubles opening Word documents? What kind of troubles?

Why can't I open a Numbers '09 file in Numbers '08?

I created a Numbers file on my macbook pro which has iWork '09, emailed it to myself, tried to open it on my desktop (which has iWork '08) and got an error message about not having the right version of Numbers. What? Why can I open any excel file but not a Numbers file from a previous version of numbers?

Numbers '09 introduced a lot of new features which are unknown by Numbers '08.
So it's normal that Numbers '08 can't open Numbers '09 native documents.
Numbers '09 is able to create documents compatibles with numbers '08 if you take care to use "Save as > Bumbers '08"
In this case, new features will be dropped.
There is an other workaround absolutely free :
install the free tril version of iWork '09.
The license states :
2. Permitted License Uses and Restrictions.
A. Trial License. If you are using the trial version of the Apple Software, this License allows you to install and use the Apple Software on a single Apple-labeled computer for the sole purpose of evaluating the Apple Software. The trial version of the Apple Software expires thirty (30) days after the date you first launch the Apple Software. *Upon the trial expiration, you may continue to open files in the trial version of the Apple Software, but you will not be able to save, print or export files.*

Fresh out of the box, totally updated MacOs and iOs and I can't find my Pages created documents on iMac, inside the iPad.
I can, however, see the reverse. I can see a document I made on my iPad in Pages (cloud) tab on my iMac.

You have 2 versions of Pages (or Numbers, or Keynote) on your Mac.
Pages 5 is in your Applications folder.
Pages '09/'08 is in your Applications/iWork folder.
You are alternately opening the wrong versions.
Pages '09/'08 can not open Pages 5 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5/5.01 can not open Pages 5.1 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5.1 sometimes can not open its own files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5 can open Pages '09 files but may damage/alter them. It can not open Pages '08 files at all.
Once opened and saved in Pages 5 the Pages '09 files can not be opened in Pages '09.
Anything that is saved to iCloud is also converted to Pages 5 files.
All Pages files no matter what version and incompatibility have the same extension .pages.
Pages 5 files are now only compatible with themselves on a very restricted set of hardware, software and Operating Systems and will not transfer correctly on any other server software than iCloud.
Apple has not only managed to confuse all its users, but also itself.
Note: Apple has removed over 100 features from Pages 5 and added many bugs:

Why can't PC open a PDF document ?

Many people using PC told me that they can't open a PDF document I sent them by email, from my MacBook Pro.
I created the document on Pages and exported it in PDF, but when people try to open it, there is incompatibility.
It's very bothering because I use it for work, and it happens almost all the time.
What can I do ?

I tried with my Live (= hotmail) one, I must try with my Gmail one. I'm really sorry but I don't understand the rest of your sentence "If Apple Mail, do you have Send Windows-Friendly Attachments checked in the compose attachment (paperclip) dialog? That will make a difference on the PC end." (i'm not a fluent english speaker).
I don't know if the problem is related to Adobe, everyone reported to me that they can't open the file, so it would be weird if no one had Adobe on their computer.
EDIT : I'm just thinking that I attach my document by sliding it from my desktop to the email, I don't know if I tried it by clicking the "attach files" icon. Is it what you meant ? If not, could it make a difference ?

This is the error msg I get: The document “IMG_0259.MOV” could not be opened. The movie is not in a format that QuickTime Player understands. You may need to install additional software to open this type of file.

I have the same problem. I make a video on my iPhone and email it to my webmail, can't open it on the MacBookPro, but can on my phone from my webmail. On the MacBookPro, a screen opens that displays the "Q" from Quicktime with a question mark on it. That's all I get!
Thought I didn't have quicktime, but since the computer comes with it and my updates are all up to date, it just doesn't make any sense. This has only started recently. The two videos in question are the longest (under 15 min but over 10) ones I've ever had. When I go to email them, it says they are too long but send them anyway.
I am perplexed. I really want to be able to watch them (or I wouldn't have made them in the first place) and just can't figure out what to do!!

Pages 1.0.3 does not open or create document on my new MacBook Pro

I migrated all programs and data with the migration assistant from an Power Mac G5 to an MacBook Pro Intel 2.66 i7. Now I can't read or create new documents with Pages 1.0.3. I repaired all permissions, tried to run pages in an other account but it still doesn't work. Does Pages 1.0.3 not work with Snow Leopard??? Do I have to buy a newer version of Pages or is there a work around???

If the G5 is always running, it may be a good idea to continue to use your documents on it.
We are several thinking that a new iWork would be delivered soon.
