Why can't I open IPhoto library stored on Time Capsule?

Our old iMac G5 was struggling with the 27k of photos on it and couldn't accept a software update, so I have bought a 2T Time Capsule and a MacBook, in the hope that I could copy my music and photos onto the Time Capsule and use the MacBook just to access and use the data.
I've dragged and dropped the music from the G5 to the TC and can get at that ok with the MacBook, and when I dragged the iPhoto library over it took ages, which was reassuring given the amount of data. However, when I try to look at the iPhoto library on the TC, while iPhoto on the MacBook can see all of the events, folders, numbers of images etc, when I actually want to look at a photo, all I get it a black screen with a grey triangle and an exclamation mark.
I've done the 'show package contents' thing, and all the photos are on the TC, and I can see them in Preview.
I've checked the TC formatting and it is MacOS Extended (case sensitive, journaled).
Possible issues:
- is it a problem that the TC is also set up to do backups?
- is it a problem that the MacBook is set up with two users?
Not sure what else the problem might even be...
Help me please, otherwise I'll have to pay someone to come and sort it out and feel like I've totally failed...
Thanks!

Your iPhoto Library is very likely corrupted.
This is an iPhoto issue, so you need to post in the iPhoto support area to let the experts over there offer some suggestions to see if the library can be rebuilt. The link to the iPhoto support area is here:
iPhoto
The experts over there will likely also explain to you why you should never try to use the Time Capsule to store your "working" library with iPhoto.
The bottom line is that access to the library on the Time Capsule is very slow, and if there is any break in communications between the iPhoto application and the library....something that would easily occur using wireless.....this can corrupt the entire library.
You may be asked to trash the current library and use your backup to rebuild things.
In the future, you really want to place the iPhoto library on a USB drive or FireWire drive that is directly connected to your Mac. Access to the library is fast this way and this setup will work well.  Time Machine will also backup the attached hard drive to your Time Capsule so you will have backups of both the Mac and the hard drive.
I'll let the iPhoto experts take it from here. Hopefully Terrence Devlin will answer your question, but you might be prepared for a bit of a lecture in the process.
Good luck on trying to rescue the library.

  • Can I move my iPhoto library to my Time Capsule?

I have very little memory available on my Macbook Pro.  (The start up disk is full)  The vast majority of the memory is taken up with photos.  How can I use my time capsule to free up some of my memory?  Can I move my iPhoto library to my Time Machine?  The Time Capsule is backing up both our Macbook Pro and Mac.  Many of the photos pre-date PhotoStream and are currently not available on our Mac.

Can I move my iPhoto library to my Time Machine?  The Time Capsule is backing up both our Macbook Pro and Mac.
If you move the iPhoto Library to your Time Machine volume, then Time Machine cannot back up your iPhoto library. That is very risky, because you will have no backup of your photos at all. Sooner or later you will lose your photos.
And if your Time Capsule is not locally mounted but connected as a network share, you cannot store your iPhoto library there at all. An iPhoto Library needs to be stored on a locally mounted volume, see this support document:
Use locally mounted Mac OS X Extended volumes for your Aperture library
The document has been written for Aperture, but iPhoto  and Aperture are using the same libraries, so it is valid for iPhoto as well.

  • Upgrading iPhoto Library from Apple Time Capsule

I have put my iPhoto library onto my Time Capsule, and I know I need to upgrade my library. Every time I open iPhoto, I am asked to upgrade my library, and I click on upgrade, but it never finishes. After several minutes of attempting to upgrade, the app just quits on its own. I would like to access my photo library. How can I fix this problem?

How is the TC connected to your Mac? (It must be a fast hard wired connection like FireWire, USB or ThunderBolt for iPhoto - a network or wireless connection will not work)
Is it being used strictly as an External Hard Drive - or is it the destination for you TimeMachine backup? (if so you can not have your iphoto library on it)
Probably the fix will be to put it back on your internal drive - or on a separate EHD formatted Mac OS Extended (journaled) with a fast wired connection

  • My iphoto library, located on time capsule ( +/- 50G) does not load at all after upgrade to OSX to Yosemite ?

    Dear all,
I am guessing, this is not the end for accessing to my iphoto (last update) library, my life memories, but after upgrade to OSX Yosemite, my iphoto library, located on time capsule (+/- 50G) does not load at all. I have sent the report to Apple.
I am, worried to save or see my pictures back.
    Thanks fo your help.

    Hi Larry,
Sorry, for the delay, in the meantime I have restored my previous OS.
But to answer you, basically , I use the time capsule as both a backup volume and an external drive.
    It's a 1 To Capacity.
    Best Regards,

    That is a bad idea
1 - since you have files on the same disk as your backup you have no backup for those files which apparently includes you photos - having no b means it is just a matter of time until you lose them
2 - The TimeMachine backup grows until it fills the volume it is on - when the TC is full iphoto (and maybe other programs) will stop workig due to lack of space
You need at least two external hard drives - one for the iPhoto library (this one needs to be directly connected with a fast wired connection like Thungrbolt, Firewire or USB and be formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) ) and a separate EHD for  you TM backup

  • Why can't I copy files from Finder to Time Capsule?

I'm trying to do basic copy functions from Finder to Time Capsule and I can't copy/paste or drag/drop any files from my MacBook to TC. The paste function is greyed out. TC is connected and does backups fine from Time Machine. Is there some setting I need to change?

You are trying to add a folder into the network...
You have to click on "shared" in HD then the name of time capsule and a window will open with a folder called "Time Capsule." That window is the network, not the time capsule. You have to click on the "Time Capsule" folder to enter it. You will see a file ending in "arsebundle," that is your backup. You can now add another folder.

  • Why can't i see Iphoto Library as normal folders in finder as Microsoft Windows?

I've been having troubles with this for a long time.
In Microsoft Windows, you don't have any original program as Iphoto, so you have all your transfered photos in folders on "my computer".
In Mac, however, you have Iphoto, and every time you sync your Iphone and transfer your photos to Iphoto, you only have acces to the original files you transfered by opening Iphoto and revealing the original files in Finder (command + shift + R).
That's the way i found to manage my original files. I don't like it though.
I want to know if there is any possible way you can manage/have access to your Iphoto Library simply by opening Finder, and not only in Iphoto.
If i wasn't clear, let me try to suggest you to see it by yourself: Open Finder and search the original file of a picture you have on Iphoto. Normally, you don't find it. So you have to open Iphoto, click on the picture you want to use, reveal it in Finder and then do whatever you need with it.
The problem is that this picture was already in Iphoto Library, which is visible in Finder, but there is no way you can open the Iphoto Library without being redirected to Iphoto.
Sorry if I wasn't clear enough.
    Thanks a lot!
    Matheus.

In your pictures folder of your user directory, there will be a file called iPhoto Library.  Control-click on it and show the contents.  All of your pictures will be inside of there.  HOWEVER, i you edit, delete, rename, etc... any photos from that folder, you can corrupt your iPhoto Library.

  • How can i restore an iphoto library without using time machine

I somehow created a new iphoto library and my old one was deleted and wasn't saved using time machine. Is there any way i can get my old library back. Please help!!!

The dock icon always enters the last IPHOTO library opened - so all may not be lost ..
Look in Macintosh HD/Users/*your name on your mac/Pictures
iPhoto Library is the default - if you have another iPhoto library with some extension that may be the new one -- so simply click on iPhoto to reset the dock icon.
If you use time machine - and the Iphoto library is empty - Enter time machine while in this folder and back up through time until you find the last one with pictures.

  • Can I make one iphoto library from two time machine back-ups?

    Hi
I have recently purchased a new Mac Book. I previously had two MacBooks, which I backed up with time machine onto two separate external hard drives.
I did a straight transfer of all data from one of these time time machine back-ups to my new laptop. I'd like to migrate select data from the second time machine back-up to my new Mac Book, and I'd like to start by transferring photos.
My laptop has an iphoto library, so I would like to know if I can import select photos from this second time machine back-up, and how do I do that?
    many thanks
    Linda

First you need to restore the second Library from the back up. You need to restore the whole library, you can't just gather bits of it, I'm afraid.
Once that's done you have two Libraries. The easiest way to do what you want is to merge the Libraries with the paid version ($20) of  iPhoto Library Manager This can be set to avoid duplicates. See the Help on it for more.
This is the only way that will get all the versions and all the metadata.
Other than that you'll need to export from one Library and import to the other.

  • Why can't I open PDF files all the time?

OS X has rendered my protools software as useless. Now my computer also opens MS word & excel on start up. Sluggish to open microsoft office... This is better?

I'm  using a macbook pro 2.4 GHz Intel corei5, 4 GB 10667 DDr3, OS 10.9. Before OS X, everything worked fine. Since I installed OS X, Microsoft applications are very sluggish. When I turn on my computer, sometimes it takes up to 5 minutes for MS word or excel documents to even show up in my menu when I open files with said documents in them. And sometimes when I start my computer, it automatically opens  a blank excel doc AND an MS word blank doc. When I download PDF's from emails, it will open them only a few times, then it won't. I have to re-download the PDF just to open it, (mind you I usually move the document into the applicable file. Not that anyone can help with this issue, but ever since I downloaded OS X, my protools software doesn't work, and it won't recognize the library of sounds I purchased from reason adapted software. $1000's of wasted dollars. But just ask the people at mac, this OS is the best... Har!

  • Can't access a second library on a Time Capsule

    Okay,
so I set up a second iPhoto library using my MacBook & saved it on my Time Capsule. All is working okay.
However, I have tried accessing this library using my Girlfriends MacBook but am having no joy. I have tried holding down the option / alt button on opening iPhoto & chosen to open with a different library. Unfortunately, when I do this I can't see any of the data on the Time Capsule or any folders to select to open from. When I open the Time Capsule in Finder I can see everything no problem though!
As always, any advice would be great!
    Thanks in advance........

Sorry for the questions.....trying to understand
Can you tell us what steps you are taking now to access the Time Capsule hard drive?
    What happens after each step?

  • ITunes library stored on Time Capsule or other NAS drive?

On the iPad, can I use an iTunes library that is stored on an external, network-attached disk?
In other words, I'd like to put all my music on the Apple Time Capsule drive (or other NAS disk drive) and play it from iTunes on my iPad. Is that possible? If not, are there any updates, software extensions etc. coming out that would make it possible?
    Thanks!
    Message was edited by: powerbookuser99

Actually I searched again and found this ipad app called FileBrowser:
    http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/filebrowser-access-files-on/id364738545?mt=8
It says it supports NAS and people say in their reviews that they can stream music from their NAS drives using this app.
And after all, it would have been hard to imagine that ipad can't access the NAS when even my Android phone can do it.

  • I would like to free up some space on my computer and move my iphoto library to the time capsule and easily access it. Also, would I be able to access them via the TC if I purchased a new computer?

I am using my TC as an external hard drive, I would like to remove my photos from my computer to free up space. I'm wondering:
    1. Once the photos are moved, how do I access them via the TC, AND will i still be able to print them and see them the way they were set up in my iphoto on the computer?
    2. If I purchase a new computer, will I still be able to access them just as easily?
    3. What is the process to move the photos to the TC?
I am afraid that if I "erase" them from my computer I will not be able to access them.

    Are you still using iphoto?
If so you should NOT move the iphoto library to the TC and use it.
Apple says you will corrupt the library doing this.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5168
Although mostly about FAT32  it adds network drives.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1198
Now what I cannot tell you is if the same rules apply to the new photo app. Apple might have fixed the problem.
For iphoto you should offload the photos to USB drive plugged into your computer.. or any external drive.. the faster the interface the better.
Apple have explicit instructions for moving the library.
