Why can't I open PDF files all the time?

OS X has rendered my protools software as useless. Now my computer also opens MS word & excel on start up. Sluggish to open microsoft office... This is better?

I'm  using a macbook pro 2.4 GHz Intel corei5, 4 GB 10667 DDr3, OS 10.9. Before OS X, everything worked fine. Since I installed OS X, Microsoft applications are very sluggish. When I turn on my computer, sometimes it takes up to 5 minutes for MS word or excel documents to even show up in my menu when I open files with said documents in them. And sometimes when I start my computer, it automatically opens  a blank excel doc AND an MS word blank doc. When I download PDF's from emails, it will open them only a few times, then it won't. I have to re-download the PDF just to open it, (mind you I usually move the document into the applicable file. Not that anyone can help with this issue, but ever since I downloaded OS X, my protools software doesn't work, and it won't recognize the library of sounds I purchased from reason adapted software. $1000's of wasted dollars. But just ask the people at mac, this OS is the best... Har!

  • Why can't I open PDF files created in Adobe X using Adobe XI? How do I fix this?

    Why can't I open PDF files created using Adobe X in Adobe XI?

    I try and open them in Reader (double left click on the file) and all I get is a single screen with two overlapping frames neither of which have anything to do with the subject although the presentation title is at the top.  One of the frames had "Adobemail.com" on it. Our work computers were recently up-graded to Adobe XI and this was the first time I tried to open a presentation that has worked fine in the past.  I would have thought that Adobe XI would have been backward  compatible, but it doesn't seem so. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I have an 08:00 First-Aid class tomorrow and need this presentation.  Apparently Adobe forums are off-line for up-grades.  Thanks

  • Why can I not open PDF-files in InDesign CS4?

    Hi,
    Well then, as I wrote in the headline... Why can I not open PDF-files?
    I get a notification that says that either the file is already open (which it's not) or it is missing a plug-in thingy for this kind of file.
    So, how do I know which plug-in thing I should chose from Adobe which will solve my problem?
    Could it be enough just to update the program? I tried with 6.0.6. upgrade but it wouldn't even open up. I'm not so good at this type of computerproblems (choosing upgrades, plug-in etc.). The program is not upgraded for a long time, unless it do it automatically, but I think we've chosen it not to....
    Please help!

  • Why can't I open pdf files allthough having adobe reader 9 preinstalled on my new windows 7 laptop?

    Hi!
    I think my question might be simple to answer, so please if you read this give it a try...
    I just bought a new laptop with windows 7 on it. Adobe Reader 9 was allready installed. I wanted to open simple pdf files, but I got the message "Adobe Reader ?" in an empty field that pops up.
    Why can't I open pdf files? Do I also need to install the Adobe Flash Player as well?
    I would be very glad if you could give me a hint.
    Thanx

    It appears as if Adobe Reader is not correctly installed.  Try installing the latest version 9.2 from http://get.adobe.com/reader/ - make sure that you uncheck any unwanted software bundled with the download.
    P.S.  no, you don't need Flash Player to open PDF files.

    I get the same thing... no matter what site i try to pull a pdf for IE10, it gives me the black x... if i use chrome it works, but my client does not want to use a different browser.
    I followed the guide that Pat posted... nothing worked... I have uninstalled and reinstalled Java, Adobe reader, Adobe flash,.. upgraded to IE11, then back to IE10 due to medical software that is not compatable with IE11...
    The kicker is that my Admin profile works just fine.. no issues.. so i know it has something to do with his profile....
    Please.. someone... help!!!

    Hi Melbus_SE,
    Are you downloading files from your Acrobat.com cloud storage? If so, what browser are you using, and are you on Mac OS or Windows? Has something changed on your system since you were able to download/open PDF files successfully? What version of Acrobat or Reader are you using to open these files?
    Sorry to ask so many questions, but your answers will help us get to the bottom of this issue.
    I look forward to hearing back from you.
    Best,
    Sara

  • Why can't I open PDF files on iMac?

    Why can't I use PDF files on my iMac or iPad ?

    Here are some PDFs you may want to try http://www.dpor.virginia.gov/cic-ombudsman/
    I can open them in my browser, but when I save them they are blank. Those emailed to me don't open. I get this error message:
    Please wait...

    You can upgrade to the latest version of Adobe Reader for Windows®, Mac, or Linux® by visiting http://www.adobe.com/go/reader_download.

    I'm using Mac OSX 10.9.2 and latest version of Adobe Reader on a Macbook Air. I've tried Preview, Pages, Mail, PDF Signer. All give the same error message.
    Here's what the folks at PDF signer told me a couple of days ago:
    That PDF document was created using Adobe LiveCycle Designer and contains
    proprietary Adobe data (known as XFA forms) that is not part of the PDF
    specifications. This PDF document will only open in Adobe products (Acrobat
    and Reader), all other PDF viewers/editors are unable to open these kind of
    documents (e.g. it won't open in the Mac's "Preview" application as well).
    Unfortunately, Adobe uses this to promote their own products instead of
    providing the information and tools for other PDF engines to use these
    documents.

  • Why can I not open pdf files in Safari? All I get is a black screen.

    Suddenly Safari will not allow me to open pdf-files, and I have gathered from other discussions that it is a problem. I removed Adobe Reader, to see if Preview would kick in but it did not work. Any suggestions?
    Thankful for any ideas.

    Back up all data.
    Quit Safari. In the Finder, select Go ▹ Go to Folder... from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Copy the line of text below into the box that opens, and press return:
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
    From the folder that opens, remove any items that have the letters “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then launch Safari and test.
    If you still have the issue, repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
    If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari again.

    Are you saying that Adobe Reader or Preview can't read PDF file that you download? Or, are you saying that you can't display PDF files in your Safari broweer? If the latter, then delete any AdobePDFViewer plugins you find in /Library/Internet Plug-ins/ and restart. That should allow Safari to display PDFs in its window. BTW, that's the worst place to view them. Better to download them and use Adobe Reader or Preview.

  • Why can't I open pdf files in firefox anymore?

    When opening pdf files it will only go in a loop and won't stop making new tabs.
    The only way to stop this is by clicking on the home button several times or close firefox

    It depends. When a server says that a file is of the application/pdf content type, it should load in the built-in PDF viewer, or in the Adobe plugin. However, if the server says it is a different content type, even if it has a .pdf extension, directing Firefox to open it can lead to an infinite loop of more and more tabs or windows opening.
    The typical strong medicine for this is to rename the settings file that associates the problem content type with Firefox. This also will delete any past associations created for different content types and revert to the default.
    Open your current Firefox settings (AKA Firefox profile) folder using either
    * "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Troubleshooting Information
    * Help menu > Troubleshooting Information
    In the first table on the page, click the "Show Folder" button
    Leaving that window open, switch back to Firefox and Exit, either:
    * "3-bar" menu button > "power" button
    * File menu > Exit
    Pause while Firefox finishes its cleanup, then rename '''mimeTypes.rdf''' to something like mimeTypes.old
    Start Firefox back up again and you should get the standard behavior. This time, if Firefox doesn't know how to handle a PDF, please do not redirect it to open in Firefox. (If Firefox knows how to handle it, it won't pop the question in the first place.)
    If I've misunderstood what happened, could you give a link to the problem download?
    ''Removed stray text from copy/paste error.''

  • Why can't I open PDF files in Firefox?

    I cannot get PDF files to open for viewing in Firefox. I am on Mac OS platform. This seems to be such an ongoing issue. I have followed the troubleshooting procedures to no avail. I like the look of Firefox better than Chrome, but I am switching over to Chrome because PDF's are so much easier to handle on Chrome, and I am sick of wasting time with this. Any last minute tips or advice?

    The Adobe Reader plugin may not be working properly on Mac.
    * https://support.mozilla.org/kb/pdf-files-are-blank-and-cant-be-downloaded-mac
    * https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Opening+PDF+files+within+Firefox
    Disable the Adobe Reader plugin in Firefox (Tools > Add-ons > Plugins) and use the external Adobe Reader application or Preview application instead.
    PDF files may be found under entries like Portable document or Adobe PDF document or Adobe Acrobat Document.
    *Firefox > Preferences > Applications > Adobe PDF document : Use Adobe Reader

  • Why can't I upload pdf files into the US District Court CM/ECF system?

    Since the last update to Firefox, I cannot upload pdf files into the Federal Court's e-filing system. When I press the browse file button, all the files (except jpg) files appear inactive and I cannot click on any file, esp. pdf files to upload. I tried it with Safari and had no trouble. I need this resolved asap as I routinely have done all my e-filing with Firefox. I had no issues in the past until the recent update. Thank you.

    The Bankruptcy Court announced a few months ago that updated versions of Firefox would not work with the ECF system. You have to download an older version of Firefox. I was able to download Firefox 3.6.19 and I run that only for bankruptcy filings.
    I know it doesn't make sense, but it works.
    Many people are evidently having the same trouble. I have no idea why the court system doesn't run software that works with the latest versions of Firefox. Or why the latest versions of Firefox don't work with the courts.
    I'm looking for a way to notify Firefox and to ask them to fix.
    Incidentally, over Labor Day weekend, the Bankruptcy Court - at least in Oregon - did a major software overhaul. But they didn't fix the Firefox issue.

  • Why can't I open pdf files with Safari 7.0.6 and OS 10.9.4?

    I have just upgraded to Mavericks from OS 10.6.8. When I attempt to open a pdf file in Safari, I get the following message:
    Abobe Reader
    Before viewing PDF documents in this browser you must launch Adobe Reader and accept the End User License Agreement, then Quit and relaunch the browser.
    Well, I must have already accepted the Agreement because I can open pdfs directly from Adobe Reader and from other browsers. Why doesn't can't I open them from Safari?
    Don

    Launch Adobe Reader from your Launch Pad. Then accept the end user license agreement.
    I found that suggestion here >   ADOBE - ACCEPT END USER LICENCE AGREEMENT
