Why can't I open read/write rules file?

I have followed the Cookbook XML tutorial exactly as prescribed, even down to using all the examples from the 'Completed' folder, but when I try to perform any procedure such as generating a EDD or reading an XML instance (the ColorDoc.xml example) I get the following in the log file:
Could not open the read/write rules file
(App\ChapterReadWriteRules)
Make sure you have read access to the file and that
the file is not already in use.
Using XP and Framemaker 7.
Its a real blocker this proble. Have tries unsetting the XP Read-only folder property on all the folders in the heirarchy but XP won't let me do that. Very grateful if anyone could help me over this problem.

What is the path you mentioned the structapps.fm file for read/write rules
It should be full file path for read/write rules(including extension of file). Otherwise there is possibility of throwing the error you mentioned.
Would it be possible to paste your XML application defined in your structapps.fm file??

For your addressbook, export the files to vCard on the PowerMac, then bring them over to your Mac Pro. For your iPhoto, copy the Users -> yourname -> Pictures folder to your Desktop on the Mac Pro, and open iPhoto on the Mac Pro holding the command and option keys. Select the library file from that Pictures folder and open it. It should import all the pictures into iPhoto as part of the rebuild process. I have just started working on a project in Final Cut Express - I render, save, and close out of FCE - but, when I go back to FCE, the project I was working on does not open.
Why can't I open a project file that I have saved?
Here was my process in a nutshell:
~ When I opened FCE, I went the System Preferences and set the Scratch Disks to a folder on my external hard drive.
~Then, I went to File - New Project - worked on the project for a while (including creating bins, importing images and video, and creating a sequence.
~I saved the project file to the same folder that I set my Scratch Disks to.

~When I was done, I saved again andd closed FCE.
~Then, soon after, I opened FCE again and my project did not open automatically.
~So, I clicked File - Open Recent - browsed to and chose the project file name and FCE gave me a "Unable to open file" message.
~When I check to see if the project file actually saved to my external hard drive, the name appears, but it says the file size is ZERO kb.
I have done this twice with the same unfortunate result. What am I doing wrong? I have worked on FCE on this same computer before, setting the Scratch Disks the same way, and I did not have this problem.

Are you sure you are trying to open the project file you actually saved ?
Try using Spotlight to search for your project file name. I might be wrong, but I guess you try to open an empty copy while your real project file (what you saved) is somewhere else in either your startup disk (Documents folder ?) or the external drive. If so do not use Open Recent in FCE but simply double click the "real" project file.

I created a Numbers file on my macbook pro which has iWork '09, emailed it to myself, tried to open it on my desktop (which has iWork '08) and got an error message about not having the right version of Numbers. What? Why can I open any excel file but not a Numbers file from a previous version of numbers?

Numbers '09 introduced a lot of new features which are unknown by Numbers '08.
So it's normal that Numbers '08 can't open Numbers '09 native documents.
Numbers '09 is able to create documents compatibles with numbers '08 if you take care to use "Save as > Bumbers '08"
In this case, new features will be dropped.
There is an other workaround absolutely free :
install the free tril version of iWork '09.
The license states :

I work in a multiple editor enviroment, where we have hundreds of different projects. They are all divided into sparse image files to keep them all separated. I used to be able to mount multiple sparse image files and see them all in FCPx. But recently, FCPx upon opening, will close out all but one sparse image. The images are still mounted to the OSx but FCPx will not recognize them. I can only open one sparse image at a time. I am needing to export multiple projects at the end of the day, and can't batch export or send them all to compressor because I can open up multiple projects.

Why can't I open a Quark Express file in InDesign CS3?

Hello there,
I have a client's magazine in Quark Express (PC format) and I need to recreate it as an InDesign file (Mac format) for laying out future publications. I have tried several times to open it in InDesign as I have read that this is possible. I don't even get an error or warning message. It simply doesn't open at all. It tells me that the file type is not recognised.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to get this to open? Perhaps it is a PC/ Mac conflict? I have even added an InDesign file suffix to the end of the Quark file but that also failed.

Just to add to Eugene's recommendation. Q2ID is worth every last dime of the $200 it cost.
I just upgraded to the latest version when I received 25 Quark files to convert for an iPad app. Even for early Quark files that InDesign can open, it does a better job.
BTW, it's also worth noting here that Adobe cannot legally have InDesign open anything later than Quark 4.x files due to the encryption used in Quark 5 and later files. Quark is too dependent on Markzware for XTensions to go after them.

Why can't i open a scanned pdf file on my ipad?

I transfered several Word files and several pdf files that I scanned into my pc into pages. I can open the Word files but the pdf files are grayed out on the iPad.

Or if you toich and hold the file, does the' open in' pop up? Can you open them in i books?

Why can I not open an unzipped keynote file folder on my iPad or MAC?

Why does my keynote file get converted into a folder and get zipped when I try and e-mail it? It didn't used to be like this? It used to be just a .key file.
Then as a result this creates a problem in trying to transfer the keynote file to another iPad. The other iPad cannot pull the newly converted folder into Itunes because Itunes only allows you to upload a single file and not a folder. Plus, I can't open the file on a Mac either. It says keynote file not supported.

Yes, this is a repeat of an earlier query but I'm hoping the new title will help. I'm really stumped and this seems like it should be simple.
When I originally set up my EDDs early this year, I did not want anyone using the generic topic; I wanted everyone to use the task, reference, and conept topics only, until they got more experienced. Now, however, I want to have the Topic topic available so I can create a collection topic for conrefs. However, when I try to open a topic from the FrameMaker DITA menu > New DITA File > New <topic>…, it opens a concept rather than a topic.
I can’t remember what I did to restrict the use of topic, therefore I’m at a loss as to how to make it available now. It seems that it should be easy.
BTW, topic is at the top of my structapps file, FWIW, but that structapps file is not was my roaming directory. I moved it there but that made no difference.

The items available for selection on the New DITA File menu are defined by the current set of structure applications (in the application mapping dialog) specified in the DITA Options dialog. I believe that any element in any of these apps that is identified as "valid at top level" will show up in the list of New DITA file types. (I may not be totally correct here, but this is the general idea.)
I have no idea why you'd get a "concept" topic when you select "topic" from the list .. but possibly your "topic" application has a "concept" element in it?
You may need to try to compare the default structure application definitions and default EDDs with your custom versions. I assume that you cloned the default apps and created your own versions so it's easy to switch back and forth?
You should not be moving or copying the structapps files around. There are only two in use at any time .. one in the "default" location (FMDIR\Structure\XML .. this is the "global" app definition file), and one in the "user" location (which will likely be at "%appdata%\Adobe\FrameMaker\11"). If you open these from the StructureTools menu, they will open the right files. The "global" file has the default apps, and the "user" file has your custom apps.
Sorry I can't be of more help .. it's hard to know what was done so can't say how to fix it.

Why can't I open the setup.exe file to install newer verion of Firefox?

I am using firefox 3.6.25. When I try to download and install the latest version a dialog box opens with the option to "save' or "cancel". There is no option to "open" the executable file.
