Why can't I open some of my word documents on my Mac?

I just tried to open up a document in Microsoft Word on my MacBook Pro (I have Microsoft Office 2011 for Macs) and a message popped up saying "Microsoft has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." I was working on this file yesterday afternoon and needed to edit it further for a job interview. It is saved as a docx, and similar files are opening just fine. All PDFs created through Word are opening as well without issues. I have tired both resetting and shutting down my computer; neither remedied the situation. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to get these files opened? I am not sure if I should bring my Mac into the Genius Bar or uninstall and reinstall Microsoft Office. Thanks!

I don't think that you can uninstall Word alone, you have to remove all of Office (but I could be wrong)
Removing Office requires several steps, here is a Microsoft page on how to do it.
But first, try a Safe Boot (hold the shift key while booting) it may help.

PDF files are extremely reliable. You may have a software issue. I have the problem on 2 identical systems with the exact same specs. The problem occurs at the same exact interval. It may be a windows update. We have had to re-install software form the DVD in each instance. This fixes it for awhile and then it recoccurs. Adobe acts as if they have never heard of the problem...imagine that. I'm the only one with th problem.
This is happens with CS6 volume lic product.
If you dont own Adobe product it will be even more difficult to find and answer as the reader is used my so many people.
We know we have the problem again when we double click opn a PDF and nothing happens. SOme have reported that reloading does not fix the problem.
Wish I could help you. I am looking for answers to this issue right now and phone support is a 30 minute wait.

I think I know the problem because I've had it myself. I didn't upgrade iWorks on my iPad, but after Apple made changes to iCloud (concurrent with Mavericks) any docs passing through it were modified and made unreadable. Even though, as you say, they were created on my iPad using the previous version of iOS Pages, which I didn't upgrade.
iCloud is the culprit, if your iPad settings had iCloud>Documents & Data enabled, the docs were modified and disabled in the cloud.
I made a further mistake. After I saw this happening, I didn't think to turn off auto updates, and Apple pushed the new version of iOS Pages onto my iPad. The result was that ALL my docs disappeared from the iPad, and from iCloud.com also. I have not been able to recover them.
I've been talking to the Pages engineering team about it. If they come up with an answer, I'll post it here. Meanwhile, get those older files backed up somewhere safe if you can.

Word is a text processor, not a PDF viewer. You can embed a PDF document in a Word document, but that's pretty much it. Besides Preview there are numerous third-party applications that can also view PDFs such as Adobe Reader.

You have 2 versions of Pages on your Mac.
Pages 5.2 is in your Applications folder.
Pages '09/'08 is in your Applications/iWork folder.
You are alternately opening the wrong versions.
Pages '09/'08 can not open Pages 5 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5.2 can open Pages '09 files but may damage/alter them. It can not open Pages '08 files at all.
Older versions of Pages 5 can not open files from later versions of Pages 5.
Once opened and saved in Pages 5 the Pages '09 files can not be opened in Pages '09.
Anything that is saved to iCloud and opened in a newer version of Pages is also converted to Pages 5 files.
All Pages files no matter what version and incompatibility have the same extension .pages.
Pages 5 files are now only compatible with themselves on a very restricted set of hardware, software and Operating Systems and will not transfer correctly on any other server software than iCloud.
Apple has removed almost 100 features from Pages 5 and added many bugs:

I am using Acrobat.com Beta,and I don't have too many problems with converting to Pdf files, but opening some files that are already Pdf is does not work.I am told to download them ,and afterwards Itry to open them without success.Is there an answer out there?

I'm sorry you're having trouble.Special PDF files such as PDF portfolios or secured PDF files or password protected source files cannot be previewed on Acrobat.com.
Please note that not being able to preview a file should not interfere with the successful viewing of the file once downloaded.
Are you able to open and view PDFs on your desktop? What happens if you try to download the file from Acrobat.com in a different browser?

The file extension, .mp4, .wmv, .mov, etc. really has no bearing on whether it can play or not. It should, but that is not the way it works. The file type is merely a wrapper around the media content. That media content can be encoded with lots of different encoding algorithms. If it is encoded with a scheme that Quicktime doesn't understand, then it won't play in Quicktime Player.
You might try installing the Perian plugin for Quicktime. It might have the codecs necessary to decode the media content.
Another option is to use Video LAN's VLC. It plays a lot of things.

Why can't close open multiple docs in Word 2010 in multiple windows while having the option to close them out while keeping Word open?

End User of mine is wanting to open multiple docs in Word 2010.....first initial glance I thought it was a PICNIC issue. But when addressing it she has it set up to NOT "Show all windows in the taskbar" that option is unchecked so that way she
can close out docs in Word and not actually close Word. But with unchecking that box it only stacks the docs it won't display them in mutliple windows. This is not the case with Excel as she has the option enabled to "Show all windows in the taskbar"
but yet the enduser still has the option to close out the spreadsheet and keep Excel open. Is there anyway to keep that second smaller x in Word to close out the docs but yet open in multiple windows like Excel does?
Please advise!

What will happen if you check the option of “Show all windows in the taskbar”?
If you want to closing document and keep Word open, the alternative is to click File > Close, right there under Open and Save.
You also can add the Close button to the Quick Access Toolbar.

Why can I no longer Save As a Word document?

I work in Pages, but whenever I need to send a document to someone I convert it to Word since most people seem to use MS Word. It's never been a problem, until today. I go to Save As... under the File menu and try to save a document titled "XYZ" as a Word document. But it is giving me this error: "The document “XYZ” could not be exported as “XYZ.doc." That's it. No explanantion, no reason why it can't do something it's always done. I also tried the export route. But, while I don't get an error, the supposedly exported Word document never appears where it should. Did some recent update cause this snafu? Any advice?

The resources defining the file formats which Pages may import or export are stored in the file :

Assuming that you didn't installed the Developer tools, go to my iDisk (address below)
Download :
Pref Setter.app.zip
Unpack the archive.
Open the file "Info.plist" with Pref Setter.
Open the entry entitled : CFBundleDocumentsTypes
Open the items 9, 10, 11, 12
The normal contents is :
Double check the parameters available for items 9 & 10.

Why can't I open some cascaded windows (on XP)?

When I click on cascaded windows, some cascaded windows don't display/open, and some do...no pattern is evident from memory, and I can't open the problem cascades (which each have multiple tabs) to examine why they might not be opening. First time this has occurred in years of Firefox use--typically cascaded windows have displayed and minimized very reliably. Using Firefox 7, all plug-ins show as up-to-date, fully updated XP. I have XP sp3. Cascaded windows are obviously less than full screen, else there would not be room to cascade them. When I left click on one it opens, or in fact is already open and it comes to the foreground in its existing position.
If the window happens to be a Firefox Window, then that may contain multiple tabs.
I am not sure I understand what change you have discovered.

Why can i not open some dvd's

I can not run all DVD's. Why do some open right away and some pop back out. I am only using store bought DVD's.

A .exe file is a Windows executable. OS X does not run Windows programs. If you need to use .exe files then you will need to install Windows on your Mac:

Install the Apple Boot Camp software. Purchase Windows XP w/Service Pak2, Vista, or Windows 7. Follow instructions in the Boot Camp documentation on installation of Boot Camp, creating Driver CD, and installing Windows. Boot Camp enables you to boot the computer into OS X or Windows.
Parallels Desktop for Mac and Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7. Parallels is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
VM Fusionand Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7. VM Fusion is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
CrossOver which enables running many Windows applications without having to install Windows. The Windows applications can run concurrently with OS X.
VirtualBox is a new Open Source freeware virtual machine such as VM Fusion and Parallels that was developed by Solaris. It is not as fully developed for the Mac as Parallels and VM Fusion.
Note that Parallels and VM Fusion can also run other operating systems such as Linux, Unix, OS/2, Solaris, etc. There are performance differences between dual-boot systems and virtualization. The latter tend to be a little slower (not much) and do not provide the video performance of the dual-boot system. See MacTech.com's Virtualization Benchmarking for comparisons of Boot Camp, Parallels, and VM Fusion. Boot Camp is only available with Leopard or Snow Leopard. Except for Crossover and a couple of similar alternatives like DarWine you must have a valid installer disc for Windows.
You must also have an internal optical drive for installing Windows. Windows cannot be installed from an external optical drive.

Why can't I open some sites and videos in youtube?

A few days ago it started with youtube. I wasn't able to watch videos and at the beginning didn't think much of it( i had the problem before but not for so long ). Then I tried to find the solution in the web but then I noticed I couldn't open a lot of sites like the Opera download page or the "uninstall flash player" page. Clear the cache and the cookies from sites that cause problems.
"Clear the Cache":
*Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Cached Web Content: "Clear Now"
"Remove Cookies" from sites causing problems:
*Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies: "Show Cookies"
Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
*Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
