Why can't I open Word doc. attachments I receive in emails?

All of a sudden, I can no longer open email attachments that I receive as Word documents.

Am on 10.8.2 on Macbook Air and doc and docx attachments tell me to choose application to open the doc with and won't open when I choose "Word"
These used to be opened automatically by Word, not I have to manually choose Pages as the only option

If they are all PPC-only applications, then yes. CS2 is incompatible with Intel machines. Not knowing how old your iMovie version is, but if it goes back to the same time period then it won't work either until you upgrade all the old software to Intel or Universal binaries from the respective developers.
You can revert back as follows. Erase the drive and restore your Snow Leopard backup or:
Downgrade Lion to Snow Leopard
1. Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
This will erase the whole drive so be sure to backup your files if you don't have a backup already. If you have performed a TM backup using Lion be aware that you cannot restore from that backup in Snow Leopard (see below.) I suggest you make a separate backup using Carbon Copy Cloner 3.4.1.
If you have Snow Leopard Time Machine backups, do a full system restore per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions. If you have subsequent backups from Lion, you can restore newer items selectively, via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 there, but be careful; some Snow Leopard apps may not work with the Lion files.

You don't tell us what version of Office for Mac you presently have, but I'm guessing it might be Office for Mac 2004. If so, in addition to the suggestion to download OpenOffice you can purchase the most recent version of Office for Mac 2011 directly from MS <http://www.microsoft.com/mac/buy>. You can also purchase Pages productivity suite from the Mac App Store <http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/pages/id409201541?mt=12>.

I can no longer open word or excel files from my email in firefox, i can in all other browsers. it started november 5, 2014

Yesterday afternoon, out of the blue, I can no longer open word or excel documents from my gmail account in firefox browser on windows 7. I can in all other browsers. The error message is "There was a problem sending the command to the program"

As a workaround, does it work to save the files first and then open them after saving?
Sometimes when Firefox has problems handing off a download to another program it is caused by a corrupted settings file. That file is hard to edit, so usually we suggest renaming the file to see whether that resolves the issue. Here's how:
Open your current Firefox settings (AKA Firefox profile) folder using either
* "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Troubleshooting Information
* (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
* type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter
In the first table on the page, click the "Show Folder" button. This should launch a new window listing various files and folders.
Leaving that window open, switch back to Firefox and Exit, either:
* "3-bar" menu button > "power" button
* (menu bar) File > Exit
Pause while Firefox finishes its cleanup, then rename '''mimeTypes.rdf''' to something like mimeTypes.old
Start Firefox back up again and test your Gmail attachments. Any improvement?

I can no longer open any doc attachments. This was never a problem before. Also the W for Word is not an option in the chooser application drop-down list.

At one point, all my Word icons turned to Microsoft orange icons. I resolved that issue by uninstalling Microsoft Office 2010 and not the starter. I have NEVER had a problem opening doc email attachments I have received. This is a new issue. I used to just double-click on the attachment icon and it opened. Now it gives me nothing. I can't seem to find Microsoft Word as a choice in the drop-down box either. I also tried selecting Microsoft virtual whatever it was, as was suggested in Google, but that did nothing either. Actually, I solved it myself by compacting my inbox. Yes, it was Thunderbird. All my docs can now be opened. Word starter came with my computer already installed. Never had any trouble in two years until recently. I can now pick Microsoft Word virtual handler and it opens it. I still don't know what happened to the Word icon in the drop down box. Maybe it was never there to begin with, because I NEVER had to pick anything to open an attachment before. I just double-clicked on it and it opened.

Why can't close open multiple docs in Word 2010 in multiple windows while having the option to close them out while keeping Word open?

End User of mine is wanting to open multiple docs in Word 2010.....first initial glance I thought it was a PICNIC issue. But when addressing it she has it set up to NOT "Show all windows in the taskbar" that option is unchecked so that way she
can close out docs in Word and not actually close Word. But with unchecking that box it only stacks the docs it won't display them in mutliple windows. This is not the case with Excel as she has the option enabled to "Show all windows in the taskbar"
but yet the enduser still has the option to close out the spreadsheet and keep Excel open. Is there anyway to keep that second smaller x in Word to close out the docs but yet open in multiple windows like Excel does?
Please advise!

What will happen if you check the option of “Show all windows in the taskbar”?
If you want to closing document and keep Word open, the alternative is to click File > Close, right there under Open and Save.
You also can add the Close button to the Quick Access Toolbar.

Can't open word doc attachments in pdf mail portfolio

I created a pdf portfolio by converting outlook mail messages in Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro. I can open the attachments but my coworkers are unable to open email attachments that are word documents (they can open pdfs). When they go to Preferences --> Trust Manager, the first option about pdf attachments is grayed out and cannot be selected.
Can anyone please help tell me how to make the word documents accesible to other users.

I have Acrobat 9.5 on my machine and I am not able to see any problem in opening non PDF file attachments.
Please give the exact version of Acrobat you are using ( to see the version go to Help -> About Adobe Acrobat).
Update your Acrobat to latest version i.e 9.5.
As you have mentioned that in Preferences-> Trust Manager-> Allow opening of non PDF file attachment with external applications is grayted out,
is it a custom installation of Acrobat ?? because in normal installation this option is not grayed out.

Why can't I open word email attachments on iPhone on io7

I was able to open email attachments before the io7 update, now I can't open any attachments in Word. I can open Excel but not Word. I've gone back to try and view Word attachments that I had opened and viewed with no issue prior to the update and now I can't open them.

What happens when you try? More info would be helpful. In any case, the first thing to try is a reset, cures 99% of glitches. Hold down the home button along with the power button until you see the Apple, then let go.

Why can't I get Word docs to "save as" or open in Pages

I just stared using Pages and I can't seem to be able to bring a Word document into Pages; it says that I don't have "access privileges or my document is corrupted." I know it isn't corrupted; I even tried creating a new document, (in Word) just to be sure. I also tried what the Help in Pages suggested to save the Word document as "save as" Pages, but that dosen't show as an option. I am missing something?

Recently i have tried documents between word and pages. In Ms office for Mac, i did not see export to pages option. May be because it is not there. But in Pages i have seen couple of options for export (pdf, word, html, rtf etc). I was able to successfully export pages document containing text and photos to word. I must admit that when i exported to word, the photos and text got disturbed and even the fonts got changed. i had to set it right again in word. But when i exported from Pages to PDF, it was just like what it is in Pages.

I set my wife up with a separate login on our laptop and I noticed that even with full permissions she cannot access any MS Office applications. The program asks to install itself into the HD every time she opens the application, so she'll install it, the application will close, and then we go through the same problem all over again. Any way we can resolve this issue without her needing to login to my account just Word? Thanks

The answer to your question is no. As long as the software is on the computer, it should be useable.
Try signing into the Guest account and see if you have the same problem. You also might try a Safe Mode restart and see if the problem is still present.

The first option may identify it as an account problem and the second option may identify it as 3rd party software.

Why can't I open InDesign Docs in Bridge since Installing Snow Leopard?

I have CS3 Indesign. I have recently installed Snow Leopard. Since doing that I am unable to open Indesign files within Bridge. I get a very strange message that says 'missing required parameter 'from' for event open. What does that mean and can I fix it. If I drag my document to my desktop, most of the time it opens but sometimes it does not. I have to go up to the file menu and open from there. Is it a Bridge problem or is it an InDesign problem. Very annoying! Does anyone know if there is a fix for this?
Also since installing Snow Leopard, I am unable to open multiple files in Photoshop. Once again I am doing this from Bridge.
Any information would be most appreciated.

Why can I not rotate and re-save iPhone photos once I import them to my PC? They are not being saved into a Read-Only folder. And why can't I open them or save them when I email them to myself?

I have tried opening them in several programmes but Windows Photo Viewer is default

Why can't I open pps and wmv files sent by email!

Many friends send photos and/or files with pps and wmv designations. Windows continually rejects them with the message that it is unable to open them.
How can I fix this?
