Why can't I password-protect a PDF that's been Enabled for Commenting in Acrobat Reader?

What is the point of not being able to password-protect a PDF you have enabled Commenting in for Acrobat Reader users?
We are testing out the option of using the "commented" PDF from the user's end (who just has Acrobat Reader). These PDFs we'll be sending are highly sensitive and need to be password-protected.
We're using Acrobat Pro 9 from CS4, on new Intel iMacs running the latest updated Leopard.
Help?

You need to passsword protect the file before enabling commenting in
Reader. Just don't save in between the two steps.
Mike

  • Why can't I password protect?

I have password-protected a Numbers file, and yet it opens simply by clicking on it, without my having to enter a password.  So, apparently the password protection is not working.
I would like to find out what is wrong with this feature in Numbers, and how to make it work properly.

    Paul,
    1) how did you set the password for your Numbers file?  Did you use the inspector?:
See the last section at the bottom of the Document Inspector.
    2) When you entered the password did you check the box "Remember this password in my keychanin"? :
    3) Have you tried opening the doument in another user space, on another machine?
    4) What version of the Numbers are you using?  Is the OS X version (10.5.8) really what you are running on?

  • How can my end user password-protect a document that has been digitally signed?

    Hello,
I have seen some threads that indirectly address parts of this question, but am still left unsure about whether this process can be done - and if it can, I could use your help in understanding it - thank you.
Two of our end users use digital signatures (certificate-based) in Acrobat 9 Pro to sign documents attesting the accuracy & calibration status of lab equipment for use in a legal environment.  These end users are concerned that their documents could be altered or edited, and asked me if password protection can also be applied to their documents that need to be digitally signed.
Thank you in advance for your advice.

Do you apply "Open" password or "Permissions" password or both? If you apply "Permissions" password (with or without the "Open" password) make sure that "Changes Allowed" include Filling in form fields and signing existing signature fields" or "Commenting, filling in form fields and signing existing signature fields". If permissions do not allow you to sign, you cannot sign.
Be aware of the alert that Acrobat pops up when you apply "Permissions" password that all Adobe products respect permissions that you set but that 3rd-party PDF Viewers may not (and many do not).
That is exactly what I was missing! I apply only "Permissions" password, but had the "Changes Allowed" drop-down set incorrectly - it was set to "None."  After changing that setting to allow "Filling in form fields and signing existing signature fields," the end user was able to digitally sign the document, her desired goal.
    Thank you so much.

  • How can I delete a .mpg video clip that has been "processing" for weeks?

Weeks ago I loaded a 380mb .mpg video clip using Express Loader that is still "processing". I want to delete it but cannot because the software produces an error message notifying me that I can't delete it until processing is complete. Obviously the "processing" is stuck. Suggestions on how to get rid of it? Thank you.

Have you seen recent email from Adobe about how Photoshop.com service is being transitioned to Adobe Revel?  It is actually no longer possible to upload new files to photoshop.com.  I checked your account and see the migration process has been initiated, which is probably why you do not see behavior you expect.

  • Can't reliably create a PDF enabled for commenting in Reader

I've hit a brick wall trying to find out why my Acrobat Pro 7.0.8 is broken. As of yesterday, I cannot reliably create a PDF that is enabled for commenting in Reader. I get an error message: "You do not have permission to write to this file." However, this message is halfway false Acrobat does indeed create a PDF where I tell it to. It's just not a reviewable file, which you can tell when you re-open it and see the special dialog box that first pops in front of you, and there's a key/starburst icon in the lower left corner of the Acrobat window. So the resulting output file isn't really enabled, and I've made no progress.
All I know is that before May 1st, this Acrobat Pro feature worked flawlessly every time I used it.
I tested my own file on two other co-workers' PCs and they also cannot save my file as enabled for commenting. One of them has Acro. Pro 7.0.5 and the other one has Pro 7.0.9. Nor can they save other PDF files as enabled for commenting. But creating a short (one-line) PDF from Word or WordPad DOES work, and I can save that file as enabled for commenting.
I tested a few of my existing PDFs: some of them can be output to the reviewable format without any problem, but some of the more recent ones I can't especially if they're larger. Even a Word file as small as 9 pages will not convert. I tried both printing it to the Adobe PDF printer as well as using PDFMaker. Neither one works on this file. But I was able to create reviewable PDFs from simple Word files and some older (April 2008 or earlier) Word files that were longer.
I think some incompatibility happened because of the Windows updates that get silently shoved to our PCs every Tuesday (I work for a large company). But I could be wrong to blame Microsoft.
Would the new Acrobat Pro 7.1.0 update fix this problem?

My system: Windows XP, Svc. Pack 2, Word 2003.

After I removed the comma in the filenames of my problematic test files, this solution worked for me, too. I was able to again save the PDFs as enabled for commenting in Adobe Reader (to make them reviewable).
    Thank you, thank you!
This definitely looks like a bug to me, because a comma IS allowed in filenames in both the PC Windows and Mac OS X operating systems.

  • Can you password protect an pdf Portfolio? Not a single pdf, but a pdf Portfolio.

I know how to password protect individual PDF's. My quesiton is can one password protect an entire pdf Portfolio after assembling the Portfolio.

I'm using Acrobat Pro 11.0.6, if it helps. I was able to find it at File > Portfolio Properties > Security > Security Method.
This is what I was looking for, Dave. It prompts the user for the password when they try to open the portfolio.

can you print password protected pdfs from an ipad?

This may help, but I do note that the printer you state is NOT on the airprint list. You may need to go to the app store and see if Canon has an app that will facilitate printing on a non AirPrint device.

  • How do I password-protect a PDF document that doesn't let me change the security settings?

I want to password-protect my PDF document (so when I email it, it can only be opened/read by intended recipients as it contains confidential/sensitive information) but when I go into document security, I'm unable to change the Security Method (which is currently set to 'No Security' - not by me).  There's a 'show details' icon but it's grey so I can't click on it.  What can I do to protect this document from being opened by non-intended recipients?

Ah, yes, I'm using Adobe Reader!  That makes sense.  Thanks so much for your reply.  At the moment, I scan Word documents into my computer and they're automatically converted to PDFs.  If I had Adobe Acrobat on my computer, and scanned in documents, would they open in Reader automatically or could I open them in Acrobat and therefore add password protection?

You can't remove password protection (if that is what you are talking about) using Adobe Reader. That would require Acrobat.
